PM Updates marked in RED *****Attention iPhone and iPad users***** The new iOS FishDope app for iPhone and iPad is here! Search for FishDope in the App Store to download and install. We recommend a minimum of iOS 9 to run the app, and newer versions will give the best performance. Note: Please use your FishDope username, not email address, to log in. The app offers all the charts and the latest 7 days of fishing reports, and you can now stream live VHF radio while online. It automatically stores the fishing reports for offline use, and it also saves the last chart region and chart layers you’ve viewed so that you can take them with you on the water and out of wifi range. You can also continue to view the FishDope website with a browser like Safari or Chrome on your phone or tablet, but only the app will save reports and charts for offline use. We’ve created a FAQ page for the app (with instructions for using it) here: FishDope App Frequently Asked Questions If you have other questions or notice bugs, please post them up in our forums.

—– Weather —– Scattered light showers and drizzle in some areas this morning but otherwise sea conditions were generally good although it was rough in some areas. In the very early afternoon the wind came up like it has been everyday in the 10-15 kt range and made the seas a little sloppy with plenty of whitecaps. Forecast is calling for a chance of showers everyday this week through Saturday with rain likely on Friday. Thunderstorms will be possible on both Friday evening and Saturday. As always, please keep a close eye on the latest forecast and conditions for your local area before you head out! Synopsis for Inshore Waters of the Southern California Coast Weak to moderate onshore flow will continue this week, with scattered showers at times.

****************************** INSHORE / ISLANDS Section ******************************

Inshore GPS Spots are here.   Sheephead news: As of Apr. 1st you can now fillet sheephead on board your boat thanks to a collaboration between SAC and CA DFW. Fillets must be at least 6.75″ long with the full skin attached. See the DFW press release for details. Channel Islands The current “hot spot” for white seabass is the Yellow Banks area at Santa Cruz Island. The seabass here are on bird schools and biting on red plastic tube baits and a few on red colored surface iron. They didn’t bite well today but the boats saw plenty of schools. Decent chance that they will tomorrow. Still waiting for squid and seabass to move back in at Santa Rosa. There is a few big halibut biting and the odd yellowtail but very little in the way of any seabass. Before this new bite at Santa Cruz Island the last time they were biting it was happening at the squid grounds at Rhodes Reef and Becher’s Bay at Santa Rosa Island but other areas to look include the Eagle’s Nest also at Santa Rosa. At Santa Cruz the areas to check include Christy’s on the west end. These area will likely light up again when some new squid moves back in. If you want rockfish and lingcod none of that info has changed… The fishing for lingcod and big quality reds and chuckles is great at San Miguel and Santa Rosa. The lings prefer the sardine and the swimbaits or jigs. They don’t care much for squid. Yeah sure you catch one on squid once in a while but day in and day out the other methods work so much better. The live and fresh dead squid though is hammering the reds, chuckles and whitefish. At Anacapa Island guys fishing the Anacapa Reef and along the south side of the Island to the Gap between Santa Cruz and Anacapa in 200 to 350-400 feet are scoring plenty of reds along with lots of other mixed red rockfish and whitefish. Live or fresh dead squid is working best but they are biting the anchovy too. Santa Monica Bay We are going to drop this area from the daily report and just update every few days until something changes. Right now it remains just rockfish out on the South Bank, Volcanic Reef and the PV Shelf. You might be able to get some sand bass and sculpin from the AR’s or the El Segundo Pipe on the leadhead and squid combo but we have not heard of anybody fishing for those in quite some time. No sign of any barracuda, yellowtail or seabass yet. The barracuda are due to arrive soon if it is a normal year. That said none of the past 5-6 years have been normal. LA Harbor / Long Beach Shelf / Newport Beach The crowds have backed off at the Mussel Farm. They are not gone but much less that over the weekend. This in turn has brought the yellowtail bite back to life, at least a little bit. No big scores we know of but 2-20 per sportboat and 1-3 per private boat is not out of the question. Bite time is best early and late in the day. Could be because that is when boat traffic is the lightest or that is just when they want to bite. Today though there was a steady pick on the yellows all morning long. The yellows are holding pretty tight to the structure. Fly line a sardine or mackerel on 40lb with a very tight drag. You can’t let them get into the structure. You have to stop them before they can get in there. Some signal of yellows has also been seen under birds, puddling and on sonar marks near the Double Rig and the 150 area over the past several days. These yellows are spooky and not biting well. If those yellowtail fail to show or bite for you there is always the Southeast Bank and the West Slope spots to load up on rockfish. The bite is pretty good with plenty of reds, bocaccio, whitefish and sculpin biting. Catalina Island Squid; Squid making was very tough again last night. The Long Beach Carnage left the Island Saturday morning after selling out the little they made overnight and are not likely coming back until Wednesday night. Mills Landing is the location for the squid but again it is very hard to catch right now. The stuff is not coming up to the surface and to make matters worse seiners were making sets on the stuff Sunday night. Be sure and bring the squid jigs as you might not be able to scoop any at all. Fishing; Still not much to talk about. There is a chance for a yellowtail or 2 at the west end back side spots like Iron Bound. A number of them were caught there today The east end at the Can Dumps and Pebbly Beach is also holding some yellowtail. There is also a chance of finding them back side east from Church Rock to Salta Verde. These yellows will not bite the sardine. Seems the only bait to get bites right now is live squid and then only a little bit. Still hearing some white seabass are on the beaches in 10 to 30 feet of water on the backside but these are not biting very good. Once in a while somebody scores 1 or 2 with live squid if they set up on the edge of the milky white/green water where the current is flowing into the spot. If you don’t have the squid don’t waste your time fishing for them. You’ll need to keep a steady chum line of squid bits and the very occasional live one going. You might have to sit and wait them out for a very long time and even then there is no guarantee you will get one. Have not heard of any bonito in a while. Calico bass fishing is picking up. While it is mostly shorts biting the guys are also catching a fair amount of legal size bass too. Back side west and front side west seems to be working best for these early season bass. They are biting the smaller sardine, live and fresh dead squid and plastic’s. Other than this about the only thing happening is good rockfish action at the West End Humps, East End and Salta Verde rockfish areas. The guys are pulling up good number of bocaccio, chuckleheads, reds, whitefish and other assorted mixed red rockfish. Report from Ryan at SlayDay SoCal; Despite wind and rain off and on over the last 48 … we’ve had 2 boats head over the channel and had similar experiences. Farnsworth high spots were both FULL of life, including one spot of busting yellows that were chasing bait (along with dolphins) but refused to hit the surface iron. The target species for one of the boats was sea bass, and they tried and tried but only had one run that took them into the kelp and broke off. We suggest 65 braid-to-50+ flouro. They were near China in water shallower than 25 feet and found perfect current running down with lots and foam and eerie green color. The conditions are there, but no bites. There are some smaller (real small) bonito biting the troll and microjigs/megabait-type in deeper water near the dumps and quarry, but that’s all she wrote right now. San Clemente Island The Navy has the White Rock up to Gold Bluff closed today as is much of the Island. There are more closures set for all of next week and into next weekend. Be sure to check the schedule closely before heading across. The area that was closed today is where most of the yellowtail have been coming from but we did hear of some larger 20-25lb models biting in Pyramid Cove near the Caves on live squid very early this morning. This is a change as the area has been on the slow side. Today also saw some barracuda show up at the Island and the bass fishing is showing signs of improvement. Still plenty of bonito around if you want those. The yellows up between NW Harbor and White Rock are running in 2 distinct size groups. Some are 3-5lb rats. The rest are mostly in the 10-20lb class. They are biting the sardine well. No need for live squid on these yellows although they are very willing to bite it if you have it. Guys are also catching them on surface iron and yoyo iron. We also heard some private boaters are doing well slow trolling sardines, rapalas and nomad plugs as long as there is current. Without current the bite is slow to dead. Be sure to check the Navy closure schedule  before heading out. Always monitor VHF Ch. 16 and obey any requests to clear out of closed security zones. Click here  for info on how to read the closure schedule. Dana Point / Oceanside If you want rockfish Box Canyon continues to provide plenty of reds, bocaccio and sculpin. The rockfish are on the deep end of the cobble stone hard bottom in 220 to 240 feet while the sculpin are on the shallower end in about 180 to 200 feet. Squid and red plastics are doing the job. The inshore stuff is unchanged. Water north of Dana is dirty with a lot of junk floating around. Much better water conditions are south of the Harbor. Calico and sand bass are trying to bite a little bit on the stone piles located where most of the big kelp beds were. Currently there is only a small amount of kelp making it to the surface. There should be more in the coming weeks/months as the stuff grows super fast. A few guys are drifting hard bottom spots for halibut but are not seeing much. They have been working depths from 15-20 feet all the way out to 180 feet off the Clemente Pier and down in the Ponto area. Only signal of halibut seems to be in the water less than 50 feet. Guys are catching other fish in this shallow water. Those include calico bass, sand bass, sculpin and some short seabass. Del Mar to Imperial Beach On the quiet side today but we did get one report from a contact who saw at least one 20lb class yellowtail caught in the Upper La Jolla area. Kayaks and skiffs are getting them on mackerel the jigged up along the kelp line. Not everybody is getting them. It is hit and miss but there are fish around. Rockfish continue to bite at the usual spots like the Del Mar / Torrey Pines are, the 32 around Widow Rock and the 270. Guys are also scoring lots of little rockfish at the Drop-off and the Whistler hard bottom area. **** Attention **** There is now an ice vending machine at the Shelter Island launch ramp for your convenience. It’s located right near the bathroom building at the top of the ramp. The machine takes credit cards and 20 lb. bags are $6.95 each. Swipe your credit card to open, take as many as you want, and it charges by weight when you close the door. ——— Mexican waters ———— Getting Permits To Fish Mexico – An Angler’s Guide To Baja by That Baja Guy-Gary Graham Coronado Islands / Rockpile For the most part the bluefin have moved so far west that most of the full day and 3/4 day boats are not catching them anymore. There are some kelp paddy yellowtail off shore but those are rats and not the 8-15lb quality being found around the Islands. For this reason some but not all of the boats are switching gears and fishing the Islands now. This is a day to day thing and could change at a moments notice. The yellows are moving around a lot. One day it is the Middle Grounds next day it is the weather side of North Island, then the weather side South Island or SKR. Does not appear to be any pattern to it other than much of it is related to birds either sitting or working bait. What all this means is you need to stay mobile until you locate them. Try slow trolling sardines or rapalas or the Nomad plugs while scanning the area for birds and sonar marks. When found they have been biting everything. Surface and yoyo iron, fly line and dropper loop sardines and mackerel, the troll plugs and even some on the plastics. There are also some mixed grade bonito around ranging from 3-5 to 12-15lbs with most in the 7-10lb class. A lot of these are coming on boats trolling plugs or feathers around the Islands. Today we have not heard anything as of post time. We’ll add in an evening update tonight after we get some info. Evening Update: Today was a much slower day the past week or so. The yellows are still around but for what ever reason they just didn’t want to play much today. The Mission Belle as it turns out was the only sportboat at the Islands today and they scored just 4 yellowtail, 5 bonito and some mixed rockfish, sheephead and sculpin for 16 passengers. With so few boats fishing the Islands again reports are very hard to come by so if you fished the Islands please shoot us a report to Reports@www.fishdope.com. Bracelets are now required to fish within Pacific Island Biosphere Reserve areas, including the Coronado Islands, Todos Santos, and San Martin Island. See the Mexico Info page in the Resources section for more info. **** ATTENTION **** You must stay at least 250 meters (820 feet) away from any tuna pens. If you don’t you are at risk of losing your boat and landing in a Mexican jail. Click here for more details on this subject *********************** The Mexican Navy regularly patrols the islands and checks boats for the required paperwork, including Mexican Fishing License, Vessel Temporary Import PermitFMM and valid Country of Residence Passport for each person on the boat (can’t purchase the FMM (Tourist Card) without a passport anyway). Required permits are listed on the CONAPESCA website for fishing within 12 miles of land including the islands. The permits can be purchased through their website.

****************************** OFFSHORE Section ******************************

Evening Update: Today was a slow day  for catching. The boats did see schools of bluefin on the sonar but they just didn’t want to cooperate very much. Only a handful were caught and most of those were down deep and they didn’t come up for the chum. The word is some new schools have been found to the south. No details on where just yet but we’ll have more on that tomorrow as some of the boats are going to make the run down there to check it out. –——— US WATERS ———– Below the 43 Fathom Spot / Clemente Basin Buoy / East-West Butterfly This zone has now become the best area to find willing bluefin. The bite however is far from a sure thing. Many schools simply do not want to cooperate at all. Water temp is hovering around 63.5 degrees. Perfect for bluefin. Water is also very clean with good signal of bait around. The bluefin being found are coming in 3 size groups. Some 25 to 30lb stuff, mainly 40-80lb models and those big ones from just over 100 to over 200lbs. BTW if you are close to the San Clemente Basin Weather Buoy you should stop and make a drift. The Buoy has a bunch of rat yellowtail on it if you want those. The following GPS numbers are where bluefin or kelp paddy yellowtail were found today but not necessarily where tuna/yellowtail were caught: 32 32 x 118 04 – Sonar schools of bluefin 32 31 x 118 02 – Sonar schools of bluefin 32 30 x 118 04 – Sonar schools of bluefin 32 26 x 118 01 – Sonar schools of bluefin 32 30.25 x 118 02.10 – San Clemente Basin Buoy. Yellowtail 32 25 x 117 59 – Sonar schools of bluefin ——- MEXICAN WATERS ———— 425 / 371 / 230 / Upper Hidden Bank / 390 / San Salvador Knoll It appears much of the bluefin that was in this big general area have wandered out to the west just across the border into the areas below the 43 Fathom Spot / Clemente Basin Bouy / East-West Butterfly. That is not to say that all of the tuna are gone now. Just less volume than before. They are still playing had to get. Most are being found on sonar marks down 150-200 feet and the majority of the schools do not want to come up for the chum. What bluefin that do bite are going for the sardine with a rubber banded torpedo sinker up about 4-6 feet above the hook or the big flat fall jigs. Using the sardine most of the bites continue to come on 30-40lb fluoro and a small circle hook. The bluefin being found are coming in 3 size groups. Some 25 to 30lb stuff, mainly 40-80lb models and those big ones from just over 100 to over 200lbs. At 1pm the San Diego called in with 2 bluefin. One was a 55lber and the other taped out at 85lbs Locations; It appears the bluefin are slowly moving to the west with the majority of the tuna found now are out near the area between the 390 to the San Salvador Knoll and out to the US Border and beyond. We heard from a guy today working the 302 down to the 371 and in towards the 425. He saw no sign of any tuna in his travels. Just some kelp paddy yellowtail. The guys in the 425 area continue to report that about 1/2 of the kelps are holding along a strong current break running north-south through the area. Not much signal, if any, tuna in the 425 area though. These yellows are for the most part little 3-5lb rats. Just the odd 8-12lber in the mix. The following GPS numbers are where bluefin or kelp paddy yellowtail were found today but not necessarily where tuna/yellowtail were caught: 32 23 x 117 51 – Sonar schools of bluefin 32 20 x 117 42 – Sonar schools of bluefin 32 17 x 117 42 – Kelp paddy yellowtail 32 17 x 117 21 – Kelp paddy yellowtail 32 13 x 117 47 – Sonar schools of bluefin ***** General Info updated on 5-6-2019 ***** During the daytime there has been a few balloon or kite/double trouble rig bluefin caught over the past several days and this is the #1 way to get these really big tuna to the boat as it is nearly impossible to land a 150+ tuna on 40lb flyline gear. For most guys the bites continue to come on the fly line sardine fished on 30-40lb fluorocarbon, a small circle hook and a HOT sardine. Take some time to pick the best sardine possible! You want a pale green back and NO red spots on the body. Generally speaking the hardest one to catch in the bait well is the one you want to be using. A few have been successful lately rubber banding a 4-6oz torpedo sinker to the line and dropping the sardine down deep where the tuna are holding. See the pic below. Lately there has been more flat-fall fish too. Not just at night either. Some guys are getting them during the daytime too. These are generally coming off stops where the bluefin are showing down around 150 to 200 feet and refuse to come up for the chum. Fish the flat-fall with at least a 100lb fluoro leader. 130-150lb is even better. Use at least 60lb. main line. 80 to 100lb gear is much better when fishing the flat-fall jigs. The night time hours from 7pm until 6am is all about the Flat-fall jigs. Here is a great trick/tip…. Take a black permanent marker and put a mark(s) on the braid every 50 feet. One mark for 50 feet, 2 for 100, 3 for 150 and so on. This will allow you to know exactly how deep you are fishing. You find the tuna on the sonar you know to drop down to just past the 3rd mark to allow a little extra for scope. Below is a pic of the rubber band sinker rig some guys are using to get a sardine down deep to the fish.

San Clemente Island

Report from the Malolo:

Left Dana Point Wednesday night and ran to Whites Landing to make bait. Plugged the boat with squid in front of Moonstone  in less than 10 minutes. O-dark thirty get up and run to SC island White Rock area to fish for yellows. Caught 4 by noon fly lining squid on 15.lb.  Ran around to the back side and set up Caves area for two 20 lb. models on dropper loop. Strong down hill current turned around in the late afternoon. Wind on the backside was 12-20 knots in the late afternoon.

This morning there was nothing biting backside except blue perch and zero on the front. A few jumpers spotted on the Mac bank on the way home.

OFFSHORE

LOT’S of guys on the water today! Some didn’t do so good but many did great on the kelp paddy Yellowtail!

Weather was and is an issue all day long

US Waters

277

Some marlin are being found on this ridge leading into the slide. At least 1 fish was tagged and released this morning.

289 / Mackerel bank

The Marlin guys are finding  the Marlin at the Mackerel Bank and down to the 289 off of San Clemente Island.

Lots of hook ups on them this morning.

Something around 6 to 8 leadered Marlin at 1pm with about the same number hooked and lost.

Some kelps hold Dorado and Yellowtail are also being found in this strip of warm water.

Off Oceanside

Report from Eddy on the Foreel:

Hey guys! Headed offshore out of oceanside today in search of the kelp paddy mentioned yesterday and had a great day. Headed just south of those numbers and found a few stringers loaded with mini Macks so picked up a few and headed out west and spotted some dodo jumping in the distance which lead us to a paddy a little bigger than a bodyboard with wide open yt and dodo. We had triple limits of smaller yellows pretty quick and spent the rest of the time tryin for the dodo.. landed four and farmed a bunch more. The fish followed lures and irons but only seemed to want to bite bait, we had bigger sardines from Oside that worked fine. Hooked up a yt on the wax wing but broke it off and I feel like the dodo might have gone for one, they were all hooked near the surface and were surrounding the paddy up to about 50 yards off, jumping and going wild the whole time. Ran out of bait and hooked a few yt trolling rapalas then called it. Second offshore trip, first successful one! turned out to be a great day. Nice weather and calm seas and got back in in time to clean up and make it to class! When we left the paddy it was at 33.06.738 117.28.789 still loaded with fish and drifting east..

Report from the Nexterday:
Limits of dorado to 16 lbs on one magic paddy. At 2:30 pm, paddy was at
32 23.500, 117 31 756. Fish willingly ate the horse dines from EB in San Diego bay.  Area of fish was within 300 yards of the paddy, larger models outside. At one point, had 7 boats spread across the area, all bendo.

Started at the upper 9, then down the ridge, and over to the 302. Picked a small dorado on a purple and black cedar, trolling past a paddy filled with small dorado. They had lockjaw, and would not go. Headed to the 371, and came across the paddy above. Caught limits for all four aboard; played c/r with the small models to get the larger ones.

Weather was rougher than forecast, and wind came up early. Swell was mixed, but a shorter period than marine forecast advertised. Heard a lot of guys catching limits of small YT, but we never found any.

Report from the Grim Reefer:
Left Mission Bay at 5am and set course for the 302. Seas got rough for us in my 21 footer and made it difficult to spot kelp. It wasn’t until we got close to the 371 when we spotted a small kelp at 8am. By 830 we had limits in the 6 to 10lb range. These fish were not shy. We started catching them on my curado with a top water bass jig. They crashed all over it. Called in a Parker passing by, named “Freejack.” As we pulled off the paddy all rods on the Freejack were bent. Also over the radio very close to us was a report of a blue fin strike under tern birds on a green and black jig. They landed a 75lber.

Hidden bank to the Upper 500

Pretty decent fishing for Bluefin, Yellowtail and Dorado.

1 boater had 12 Bluefin by 9am along with Yellowtail and Dorado

The action is coming from a 3-4 mile block centered around 31.48 x 117.30.

Great fishing for Yellowtail along with some Dorado, Bluefin and Yellowfin.

Ali fishing with Ronson, Brant and Jim Rome on the Tuna Jihad found a kelp at 31.33 x 117.21 for all the Yellowtail anyone could ever want. Close by another boater scored a Yellowfin on the troll at 31.34 x 117.20.

All of this happened before 9am. watch for updates on this.

At the 1pm hour Ali reported to have 4 Yellowfin onboard taken on trolled Cedar Plugs.

The weather is lumpy and choppy with 12 to 15mph wind.

Ali’s count. He worked right in the middle of the 238/295. 4 yellowfin, 2 over 30lbs 2 around 20lbs. limits 6-8lb yellowtail, 6 dorado. All fish accept the yellowtail taken from blind jig strikes with black and purple feather, marauder and cedar plug. Very sloppy after 9am, taking waves over the wheel house and dipping the bow on a 31′ many times. Wind was gusting 20-25knots at times. The wind calmed down around the hidden bank.
A Boat working 15 miles South West of the hidden bank above the trench found dolphin and caught 6 yellowfin off them.
Bait out of San Diego was good.

Report from Darrel:

Left Huntington last night. 110 kts south.  30 yellows I dorado on the troll. Lost about just as many. New guys.  Rough seas. I got lucky to find the patty
Water 71.5

West of San Martin

The Long Range fleet is working out this way around a 10 mile block at 30.43 x 117.02.

The bite is reported to be on the slowside but not for a lack of fish. They just are not chewing this morning.

The weather is up and this might be part of the problem.

Some really nice quality Bluefin and Yellowfin are showing though.

The guys are finding GIANT schools of Bluefin, Yellowfin and the kelps are holding a bunch of 20lb Dorado and unlimited amount of Yellowtail.

Welcome to the NEW Fishdope website!!

Be sure to check out all the new features like all the different charts and the Bite zone chart.

Should be interesting to see how this works out in regards to where the fish are biting.

We are still working out the bugs that happen when ever you open up a new website.

Thank you all for your patience during this process.

Channel Islands

SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE FRIDAY NIGHT

Winds are going to be fairly stiff over the next few days so use good judgement when traveling out

Pretty quiet up here. The Yellows at Anacapa have disappeared now.

The focus is back to really good rockfish action.

East Anacapa Reef

34.01.25 x 119.20.70

34.01.25 x 119.19.84

Catalina Island

Same old story.

Tons of Squid all along the front and Yellowtail scattered all along the front as well.

Best shot at a Yellowtail continues to be Red Bluff. Some signal of them at Hen Rock, K-20 and Seal Rocks at the East End.

Calico bass fishing is good with the inside of the Isthmus being a hot spot for legal Bass. You can also find them at almost any thick kelp spot.

The East end Backside is still reported to be holding some Seabass although the guys say they are just barely legal.

Darrell has been MIA. Try calling him if you need to buy Squid. Best bet though is to just make your own. It’s really easy right now.

Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

San Clemente Island

Look for Yellowtail along the front from Purse siene rock up to Gold Bluff

These 10 to 20lb Yellows are roaming up and down the Island so slow trolling up and down the Island is a good tactic.

There is/was a shot at White Seabass on the back at Lost Point and Eel Point but this dope is a few days old now and might not be valid.

Very quiet. Rockfish and Sculpin at most of the deep spots is the main story.

Squid are out near the 150 and there is Squid near Izors.

Still some Squid showing at night and the Yellowtail are on it or close by.

The Squid is just outside of Mission Bay to the north and before Crystal Pier.

The Yellows are been seen here and up to the lower edge of the MPA. As has been the case all the Yellow action happens before 8:30am

Nothing to report this morning. Might not even be anybody there today. Everybody is out paddy hopping.

OFFSHORE

US Waters

Morro Bay

The Black Pearl scored ALBACORE again landing 38 of them in the 18 to 20lb class. They ran out as far as 80 miles due west but saw and caught fish in much closer.

Capt. Rick Craddick says they are online to run again tonight on a 1.5.

He said the ticket price is $250 and to call (805) 771-5500 to book a spot.

267

Report from Jason on his 19 Mako

Quick half day out of DP on buddies boat.  Huge sardine and a healthy scoop as always from EB.
Weather couldn’t have been better this AM.  On the way down saw a jumping Dodo about 6 off the point.  Water inside 66 and water on the high spot at the 279/267 was 69.8.  Not a scrap on the high spot, wanted to work the break north/northeast of but not a lot of debris and no kelps.  Ran over big spots of Saurie and the water was clear and deep blue.  Whales, birds, great conditions just no love for us.  Marlin guys out in force near the bank.
Running back in (went after drop off and p/u at school) we ran into a bunch of kelps 4 off DP.  Water cooler and dirty, small bait no gamefish.  Back by noon with an empty box but a great day on the water.  Wind was starting to kick up a bit.

277

Pretty quiet on the Marlin today. That should change tomorrow and through the weekend with the up coming Tourament.

Only thing we got this morning was that a sword was baited Yesterday afternoon and a couple of tailers were seen on the ridge running in towards the Slide.

209

A kelp out near the 209 is holding yellowtail this morning with 1 boat scoring about a dozen fish at about 10:20am

It is located just inside of the 209 along a temp break at 33.06 x 117.48.

The water inside of the 209 is warm and above 70 degrees. On the 209 it is cooler at 69.8.

 182

A few kelps found out to the inside of the highspot today with lots of Yellowtail on them. 1 of them is at 31.42 x 117.39

181

Quiet this morning. 70.5 degree water but no life.

Yesterday a few kelps were found holding yellowtail.

Cortez and Tanner Banks

The story is completely unchanged.

Still the best location for a shot at Bluefin in American waters.

Schools of Bluefin are living on both Tanner and cortez Bank. many of these are mixed with large Bonito.

Most of the Bluefin are 15lb models but some are pushing the 40lb mark.

Yellowtail are on both Banks as well. They are ranging from 10 to 30lbs. These fish are coming off the dropper loopp rig fished with Live Squid.

You NEED to have the Squid for both the Bluefin and the Yellowtail. Once in a while guys are finding 20lb class white Seabass too.

Large Bonito from 5 to 10lbs are everywhere on the Cortez and big Whitefish, Sheephead and Salmon Grouper round out the excellent overall fishing

32.26 x 119.08 Cortez

32.42 x 119.08 Tanner

MEXICO

9 Mile Bank / Coronado Canyon

Be on the lookout for pods of Dolphin. Some of these had Yellowfin on them late yesterday afternoon.

One boat got 4 jig stops on the Yellowfin while chasing the Dolphin.

Kelps are still holding Yellowtail. Some kelps have all small 4lb fish while a few have the 12 to 20lb models.

Some of the kelps have Dorado too. The Dorado are mixed. some small and some well over 20lbs

Just depends on the kelp.

Also there are scattered bird schools all over the area and down through the 425 to the Upper Hidden.

There is a ton of 1/4 to 1/2lb Bonito on them

32.25 x 117.21 Yellowfin jig stops on Dolphin

32.41 x 117.31 Kelp with Dorado

226 and the 302

Yellowtail are being found on kelps in this area today. some of this action is happened just to the west of the 226 with a pair of kelp holding good numbers of mixed Yellowtail. Some 4lb stuff and some 8 to 10lb Yellows.

Our contact did not say if they saw or caught any Dorado on these.

32.31 x 117.40 kelp

32.32 x 117.40 kelp

Spots of Bluefin were found under tern birds and as breezers this afternoon. None of them would bite however.

IMG952013091295110432

230

Hot kelp with easy limits of Yellowtail was found at 31.21 x 117.44.

Another one was found at 31.23 x 117.41. This one was a 1 stop shop for limits of Yellowtail

425 and south to the Upper Hidden bank

Kelps are holding Yellowtail and Dorado.

Some but not all of these have a big volume of fish on them. Most are the 4lb grade yellowtail but a few 12 to 20lb fish are showing up as well. The dorado are all mixed up in size too. Somes 4-5lb fish and others pushing the 20lb mark.

Be on the look out for Dolphin. Several time over the past couple of days a few pods have been seen holding Tuna and a few of them have been landed.

32.08 x 117.20 kelp

32.05 x 117.27 kelp

32.02 x 117.21 Good kelp

371 and South

Yellowtail are on kelps and some spots of open water Yellows have been found today as well.

32.13 x 117.31 Open water jig stop on Yellowtail

238

This zone continues to have Yellowfin, Bluefin, Yellowtail, and Dorado.

31.34 x 117.03 Several jig stops on Yellowfin within a mile of this number.

31.34 x 117.11 Variety kelp

31.41 x 117.08 Hot kelp along a temp break.

31.33 x 117.12 Hot kelp right on top of the 238

295

Same as the 238 except the Volume of Yellowtail far out matches everything else. The numbers of Tuna are on the rise however and they could over take the Yellowtail at any momment.

Best action is to the south of the 295 towards the area listed below for the 1140 finger

Still very good fishing out this way

31.34 x 117.23 Loaded kelp

31.25 x 117.29 Good Kelp

1140 Finger

Still the focal point of the San Diego 1.5 day fleet

Lots of Tuna. Both Bluefin and yellowfin. Some big schools of Skipjack too.

There are more Bluefin than Yellowfin but there is plenty of both.

Some schools of Straight bluefin are being found and these are kind of touchy, but if they have any Yellowfin with them they go nuts and chew everything.

Most of the Bluefin are 15lb fish with only a few larger. Most of the Yellowfin are 15 to 18 with a few larger up to 40lbs.

Nearly every jackpot is one of these larger Yellowfin.

The Tuna are being found under birds schools, puddlers, sonar marks, Kelp Paddies and of course jig stops.

Kelp paddies are LOADED. Tonnage of Yellowtail and 20lb class Dorado. As you drift off the Tuna take over.

Almost all of the giant scores are coming off kelps.

The boats are all spread out over a wide area. the center of this can still be place around 31.11 x 117.22 with Tuna being found in ten miles in any direction from this point.

Some of the better action in the huge box is on the NW side up around 31.20 and 117.29 which should be considered a 2nd focal point to look at

100 down to 170 miles

Still excellent fishing down here and today is no different.

Chances are very high that if your heading out on a 2 day or longer you will be here in this area.

LOT’s of Yellowfin and Bluefin biting here and some of these Bluefin are big fish over 60lbs

Scattered schools of Yellowfin are spread out the enitre distance from the Lower 500 down to about 145-165 miles. At this point the volume builds up pretty good.

The focus of attention is now all inside of the 117.00 line. Most of the action is between 116.25 and 116.45.

These yellowfin are mainly 30 to 40lb models at 150+ miles but the closer fish are mainly 15lb models.

Kelp paddies, if you find one are pure gold. Loaded with LOT’S of Yellowtail, LOT’S of Dorado, Bluefin and Yellowfin.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
