Anacapa Island
A few yellowtail around first thing in the mornings. Look for current along the frontside of the island and you’ll find the fish.
Anchovies in the bait receivers.
Good codding throughout the day at The Gap as always.
Catalina Island
White sea bass and yellowtail reported on the East End of the island last night.
Wind was up most of the night.
33.17.750 x 118.19.700 Church Rock
33.18.370 x 118.18.340 Seal Rocks
33.18.370 x 118.18.200 East End – Seal Rocks
33.17.960 x 118.19.000 Under the light
The middle frontside K20 to Hen Rock also reported spots of yellowtail. Lots of squid around the areas as well. Hen Rock has a ton of squid near it.
The Isthmus and up to the west reported loaded with squid. Squid outside the Isthmus is in 120-140′ of water.
Some yellowtail at Eagle Reef this last week.
There is no bait for sale at the island.
San Clemente Island
Johannes aboard the Fin Fever reported in on his way home this afternoon.
Great calico bass and sheep head fishing today.
Yesterday he caught a 15lb yellowtail on the frontside of the island around 32.54.500 x 118.24.500 between White Rock and Purse Seine Rock.
All fish were caught on live squid that he caught at Catalina Island on the Front Side (see Catalina Island report above).
Horseshoe
The water temperature has dropped 6F from mid day yesterday. Wind and chop reported today. Very slow fishing for the twilight trip aboard the Native Son last night. Fishdope Danny was aboard and reported the boat only caught 5 nice size sand bass caught around Izor’s Reef. Danny was not one of the lucky 5 anglers to catch a fish last night.
La Jolla
Jeremie reported in after spending the night in La Jolla with his son Gavin:
Spent the night in the cove with Gavin. Squid was mostly 2-3 inch stuff. Made enough bigger pieces to setup on the half.
Current started out right and then starting swinging around.
Made some mack at grey and went outside.
Found a paddy 15 miles straight west of LJ that was loaded with lockjaw dorado. Hooked one on the surface plug and handed it to Gavin. His first time with the jig stick. He got a good fight but it popped off. Couldn’t get them to go after that only had spanish macks left and they wouldn’t touch them.
Waved in another boat that hooked a rat yellow. Only kelp we found. Huge spot of fish, dorado jumping everywhere. Wish I brought the gun.
Coronado Islands / Rockpile
Word from the Coronado’s and Rockpile is wolf packs of yellowtail in the middle water column all over the place.
Talked to one sport boat that was coming home yesterday that ran across a big school of yellowtail at the Rockpile under birds as he was passing through the area.
Skippers reporting catching yellowtail today off North Island by slow trolling sardines over meter marks in 70′ of water.
There has been very little traffic at the islands this week.
Offshore
Marlin
The 277 has lots of life on it. Bait, birds, dolphin and in the afternoons marlin. We didn’t get a total amount of fish caught in the area yesterday but it was somewhere between 2 and 4.
The 277 is located at 33.12 x 118.06
Work along the temperature break and afternoon wind line.
The marlin are still in the area this morning. Jig strikes and bait fish. 9:30am and 11am bites.
Swordfish taken today on the Good Karma on a bait fish. Took 1 hour. Estimated 200lbs. Right on top of the 277 mid day.
2 Marlin seen at the 152 which is just North West of the 277 on “the slide”.
Between the 14 Mile Bank and 277 marlin hooked on drop back. 33.20 x 118.00 11am.
The 289 is another hot spot for marlin with lots of life then turning on around mid day and afternoon. A couple fish hooked here yesterday 32.56 x 118.06. Mean Joe Green has been a good color to drag.
A few tailers off the Mackerel Bank yesterday afternoon. Should pop again today while everyone is watching football.
Few fish off Pyramid Head 1.5 to 3 miles off. Tailing in the afternoon.
Bum dope on the 60 mile bank, misinterpreted. Nothing there.
Jack Graham reported in after fishing the Oceanside Anglers Club Tourney yesterday around the 182:
Fished OAC tourney on Rickdiculous . Fished near or around 182.
Clayton Dobbs on the Reel Nice and Easy got 2 marlin on drop back and released both . Ken and John on the fish.
We got some nice Dodo to 15lbs.
Found 3 nice paddies on the way home at 32.47 x 117.42. Probably 100’s of dodos under and around all . Got a few to go on large marlin caster mackerel. More dodos then most of us have ever seen. Water temp 73. Rick called in a diver and he got 2 with one shot.
Great day on the water thanks Rick. – Jack
I was the diver Rickdiculas called in on the huge paddy around the 182. The diving was epic. I got 2 in the first shot, landed both. jumped back in got another. Back in for number 4. Shot a 5th but it tore off. There was also a school of 10-15 6lb yellowtail cruzin around. Awesome sight to see so many dorado swimming up to you when one is on the spear.
Todd on Big Tahuna
Jumper marlin and dorado seen this morning at the 182, the fish are still there.
9 Mile Bank
Kelp paddy’s on the Upper 9 Mile Bank and North are holding yellowtail and dorado.
Skippers reporting kelps with limit style fishing on them at the 9 mile bank and 11 miles straight out of Mission Bay.
The kelps are all being pushed to the East and getting closer.
32.44 x 117.25 Kelp
32.40 x 117.26 Kelp
425 / Upper Hidden Bank
The current is raging up hill. Kelps holding dorado and yellowtail yesterday are still holding today.
Loaded kelps, day enders with nice size yellowtail and dorado.
One stop shop and they are drifting North East.
Get below the 32.10 line and you’ll start finding the loaded kelps.
32.06 x 117.26
32.07 x 117.31
32.04 x 117.25
Traitor Brett aboard his buddies 20′ Shamrock was one of the boats in the area downloading fish of the kelps in bumpy seas.
Left MB at 7 AM with a light half scoop. Swells were up and stacked coming from the west. Wind was already blowing 7-8 knots. Got down about 5 miles from the Upper Hidden and ran into a lot of boats working this area. Passed by a boat that was bendo and radio’d for a status and he called me in on a paddy. All you want 5-7 lb yellows.
After an hour the wind and swells were getting bad and made the call to head home. Put 2 YT in the icebox and released 5. Farmed one on 30 lb that made a good run, pretty sure it was a larger yellow.
LOT of life 4-6 miles SW of the Nados. Ton of bait jumping around the boat, flying fish every 10 minutes, ran into a large pod of talking dolphins and dropped some marlin lures and a cedar plug back and ran with them for a while but came up with nothing.
Water looked good, lots of life, just really hard to see anything finning or spot paddies with the wind and swells. – Miss Madi
The 3/4 day boat Mission Belle reported in with 50+ yellowtail and 1 dorado around mid day while fishing in the area. He ended up with limits of yellowtail and 1 dorado.
Other 3/4 day boats also doing well on the small yellowtail and a few dorado.
Most of the yellowtail are 6lb size but some 15-20lb are around. The dorado are from 12-20lbs.
Lower 500 / 1140 Finger
At 79 Miles from San Diego the sport boat fleet is thick in to the yellowfin today.
Kelps, jig strikes and sonar marks are getting better every day.
One of the boats called in to the landing with 22 yellowtail, 3 Bluefin tuna, 125 yellowfin tuna, 29 dorado and 12 skipjack from the area this morning.
Take a look along the 117.00 line inside the 1140 finger, above the Lower 500. The fleet is spread out in the area in a 10 mile block surrounding 31.15 x 117.00.
The weather down in the area was sloppy but fishable in the big boats.
Weather
Reports of wind offshore this morning.
Captain Dave Hansen on his way to Catalina Island at 9am reported sloppy seas and 10-15knot winds. He had talked to some other buddies that were fishing off San Clemente Island and they reported the wind was up as well.
Captain Jimmy Decker on his way to San Clemente Island reported 8-10 knot winds between the islands at 7am. On his way back around 3pm he reported knarly nasty seas between the islands.
By the afternoon skippers reporting in with 18-20 knot winds off San Clemente Island.
Skippers fishing the 425 and Hidden Bank reported 12-15 knots of wind around 7:30am this morning. The further South they work the worse it gets. White caps and close together swells “can’t put out the outriggers it’s so rough”.

Welcome to the NEW Fishdope website!!
Be sure to check out all the new features like all the different charts and the Bite zone chart.
Should be interesting to see how this works out in regards to where the fish are biting.
We are still working out the bugs that happen when ever you open up a new website.
Thank you all for your patience during this process.

No change. The Santa Monica bay is not happening. A few Halibut up off Twin Roads in 65 feet is the only thing we could find, except for those Rockfish at the Short Banks.
The best shot at something exciting is to skiff fish King harbor for the 2-3lb bonito by the Bait Barge.

SQUID, SQUID, and more SQUID. It’s a full blown invasion.
All along the front you can find it. Even the Avalon pier had a float under the dock lights last night
Yellowtail are still at the Island but are going to get tougher and tougher to get will all of this Squid.
Best shot at a Yellowtail continues to be Red Bluff. Some signal of them at Hen Rock, K-20 and Seal Rocks at the East End.
Calico bass fishing is good with the inside of the Isthmus being a hot spot for legal Bass.
EVERYTHING is on Live Squid. Fin bait is a waste of time, unless you want rockfish and those are biting good at the West End Humps.

Much improved Yellowtail action along the frontside of the Island. The Yellowtail are 10 to 20lb fish and are wanting the live Squid.
No word if there is Squid in the Cove. We have some guys over at the Island today so we’ll have a better handle on the Squid.
Right now I would say to stop at Catalina and make your bait there first and then head over.
Calico Bass fishing is fair. It could be a lot better than it is. If your really into the Bass hit the thick kelp and boiler rocks spots

Fair Sand Bass fishing last night on the Native Sun for some large Sand bass.
many of the bass were in the 4 to 6lb class.
Live Squid is the ticket for the bigger Bass but some guys are doing ok with the Frozen Squid.
A trick that is working good is to bring 2 rods.
Rig one with a Squid Jig and the 2nd one with a 1 1/2 leadhead.
Catch a squid and use it for bait. The jumbo bass are being caught this way
The location of the Squid is at 33.38 x 118.11.
Daytime action is pretty miserable except for Rockfish and Sculpin. The 150 and the southeast bank is one of the better areas to look at for those Rockfish.

Not much of anything happening. Most guys are settling for Rockfish.
Still some Squid right outside of Mission bay. It on the northside between the bay and Cyrstal Pier. Some Yellowtail are on this and biting in the very early morning and again late in the afternoon.

Very warm 73 degree pocket of clean water just to the west of the 267.
Few guys are looking for Marlin and kelp paddies but not finding much. Just one jumper over towards the 277.
209 / 312
Report from the Pathfinder:
Fished out of Dana Point this morning. Went 209 then 312 following FD #’s from Thursday.
Then kept heading to look for the paddy at 32.49 x 117.45. Found it about 2 1/2 miles SE.
Had only large sardines and 2 mackerel. Fished the paddy for 4 hours.
Saw tons of 10-20 lb Dorado and 20 lb Yellowtail. Bite shut off and 2 100 lb. marlin showed up on the paddy.
Hooked one but our gear was way to light and broke off. Caught 2, 20 lb. Yellows the first hour and spent the rest of the time trying to get the Dorado to go.
No luck. Threw everything at them. Did hook one slow trolling a sardine but came unbuttoned.
289
Warm clean water with a little sign of Marlin around. Spots of Sauries being seen too.
Double hook up on the marlin at 11:40am.
The Marlin are popping up to the surface during the noon hour. Several seen between this spot and SCI.
32.56 x 118.06 289 spot

Couple guys looking for kelps and marlin are not finding much of anything.
No bait or birds and dry kelps
182
Not hearing a lot from this area today but at least 1 boater has found a school of open water Dorado willing to bite.
32.42 x 117.43 182 spot
We just received this email from Larry: Today we went and it was epic. Found a paddy at 38.11/43.57 that was plugged with dodos. Didn’t bite too well and we had cured mini macks. They came up and foamed the paddy at one point with a bird pile of terns. The one we got to bite after two hours of trying was full of 1″ macks. We trolled it like you suggested for nothing and then went west. There were tern schools of dodos in that area. Those were on 3″ sauries. We got one to go on a medium marlin jig silver and blue over pink and white. Got another on bait there. Continued west to the 43 where there were thousands of terns working but we couldn’t tell what and we trolled the area hard. Boats soaking weren’t getting anything. When we returned to that 182 area the dodos were gone. Weather was perfect and from the what I heard on the radio there were plenty of fish caught. I would say this was the day of the year so far for us.

Cortez and Tanner banks
Weather permiting this is the best shot at Bluefin from Orange and LA County.
Both banks have Bluefin on them. The catch numbers are down a little bit but still very respectable. Most are 15lb fish but some up to about 40lb are also being caught.
Big Yellowtail are also biting on both banks. Most of these are coming on the dropper loop rig. One thing new is some guys are finding 20lb class white Seabass too.
Large Bonito from 5 to 10lbs are everywhere on the Cortez and big Whitefish, Sheephead and Salmon Grouper round out the excellent overall fishing

A few Yellowtail on a kelp but no volume seen so far.
32.29 x 117.36 Kelp with 3 yellows on it.
425
Cooler water break is running across the bank. Everything is to the south at least 5-6 miles.
We just got a call from JD on the Breakaway with phenomenal yellowtail fishing on a big kelp paddy right on the upper hidden bank. They had easy limits of yellowtail and there were some dorado on the kelp, as well. Although, they only put one of them on the boat. There was a spot of bluefin tuna near them, but they were only able to get one of those, also. South of the 425 the water looked really, really good with the temperature anywhere between 71 and 72 degrees.
32.06.3 x 117.28.4 Big kelp paddy

Early reports had several Dorado caught. A kelp and open water trolling got them.
1 in 3 kelps appear to be holding a mix of Yellowtail and Dorado

Here they come! Couple of good stops on Yellowfin this morning.
The info says these yellowfin are 30 to 40lb grade
Take a look around a 5 to 10 mile block at 31.16 x 117.04
There are some good kelps around the 238 and down to the south but they are few and far between.
Most of the better kelps are on the inside of the 238 high spot mostly with a shot at a Bluefin or an open water Dorado closer to the 238 highspot and down as far as the 1140 finger
31.14 x 117.03 Big kelp marked with an orange flag

100 down to 160
Scattered schools of Yellowfin are spread out the enitre distance from just below the Lower 500 down to about 145-150 miles. At this point the volume builds up pretty good.
The focus of attention is now all inside of the 117.00 line. Most of the action is between 116.25 and 116.45.
These yellowfin are mainly 30 to 40lb models at 150+ miles but the closer fish are mainly 15lb models.
kelp paddies, if you find one are pure gold. Loaded with Yellowtail, Dorado and Yellowfin.
There are still some big Bluefin around on the outer western edge on this area. They are not all big fish however. Schools of 15lb Bluefin are here as well.
Scott McDaniels on the Sea Adventure 80 called in and said that they have 200+ yellowfin tuna in the 30-40 pound class with quite a few going 60 pounds. He said the fish holds are full!

BAIT REPORT 9-5-2013
- San Diego Bait Barge 6-8″ Sardine
- Mission Bay Bait Barge 6-8″” Sardine
- Dana Point Harbor Bait Barge 5-7″ Sardine
Catalina Island
Squid are all over the frontside of the Island. Making bait is easy.
Weather is much better today. That 30mph blast from yesterday has ended.
Darrel is down for repairs at the moment so you will have to make your own or buy it from the bait guys in Long Beach and San Pedro.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

LA Harbor
Sand Bass at night is the only game in town.
Most are legal sized with some pushing the 8lb mark.
A trick that is working good though is to bring 2 rods. Rig one with a Squid Jig and the 2nd one with a 1 1/2 leadhead. Catch a squid and use it for bait. The jumbo bass are being caught this way

Ponto South to Mission bay
Red tide is developing from Mission Bay on up to just above the Ponto are of Oceanside. Right now its just streaky but it could get worse with the hot water along that part of the coast and combined with all the green plankton inshore for the stuff to feed on.
Still some Squid right outside of Mission bay. It on the northside between the bay and Cyrstal Pier. Some Yellowtail are on this and biting in the very early morning and again late in the afternoon.
There was also a few Yellows seen and caught yesterday afternoon just below the La Jolla MPA above Crystal Pier.

Still nothing exciting happening. Yellowtail are around but not wanting to play much.

US Waters
14 Mile bank
Couple of Dorado seen jumping this morning just below the numbers for the Bank. Have not heard of any being caught however.
Nice band of 73 degree water between here and the 267.
- 33.24.x 118.00 14 mile bank
267 / 209
Lot’s of guys looking for Marlin around both of these spots this morning. 2 different reports of Jumpers seen just to the south and another just to the SW of the 267
Kelp paddy guys are not finding much so far at the Noon hour with just 1 kelp at 33.17 x 117.54 with a handful of Dorado and Yellowtail that are refusing to bite.
- 33.18 x 117.49 267 spot
182
Report from the RxTSea:
I was headed to the 43 in very rough water, stopped at a couple of paddies with Dorado jumping, they just did not like our red Sardines from MB.
While continuing our journey to the 43 and about 1.5 miles out of the 182 I spot a large paddy with birds diving and Dorado jumping.
We fish it for a couple of hours for 4 Dorados.
On the way back there was about 5 paddy toward the northern tip of the 9 and they were holding YT.
Got a couple of those before we ran out of live sardines. 2 scoops 3/4 dead.
Between the 182 and the 226 had a bite under birds and Bonitos under, that took my line so fast, deep with head jerking so much, fought it for about 5 minutes and then while taking line, my line break.
I got it back all chewed up by teeth. I am pretty certain it was a tuna.
289/284
Flat and warm 73 degree water is the word this morning. Some kelps with Yellowtail seen by this Marlin fisherman but they did not stop on any of them.
UPDATE: A marlin was hooked and lost very close to the 289 highspot.
- 32.56 x 118.06 289 spot
- 32.53 x 118.03 Yellowtail kelp
Butterfly
Very Slow. A boat out that way found nothing this morning. No kelp, no bait and no birds.
- 32.16 x 118.06 East Butterfly
Cortez and Tanner banks
Nothing really new to report. Latest word has the catch being the same.
- 32.26 x 119.08 Cortez
- 32.42 x 119.08 Tanner
MEXICO
226 / 302
Quiet today so far. Last few days have seen kelps with Dorado and Yellowtail. There has also been some big bird school with 2lb bonito under them.
The better action has been around the 226 and in to half way to the 9 Mile Bank.
- 32.27 x 117.35 302 bank
- 32.30 x 117.38 226 Bank
425 and the upper Hidden Bank
Just below the 425 is a narrow strip of cooler water. Past this you find 70 degree water.
Beginning at about 5 miles below the 425 there is a large spread out area of kelps. Of these about half are holding Yellowtail and or Dorado
- 32.08 x 117.27 kelp
- 32.06 x 117.28 kelp
- 32.06 x 117.29 HOT kelp
390
Nothing new this morning so Garrett’s report from yesterday is the latest dope. He found a kelp holding below the 390 with a bunch of Yellowtail on it. Kelps however are reported to be hard to find.
The 390 is located at 32.05 x 117.49
Double 220 and the 295
Random jig stops of a few Yellowfin and a few kelps mostly to the south of the banks is what is happening in this zone.
The kelps, if you find one are loaded with 6lb Yellowtail along with some Dorado and a couple of 15lb class Bluefin
Look at a long east west zone from 31.28 x 117.41 to 31.28 x 117.24
Below this there is a cooler water bubble.
Update: More and more reports of wide open rat yellowtail on kelps down below the 295 spot. Some Bluefin are around the kelps too but tough to catch because of all the Yellowtail.
- 31.29 x 117.26 Single Yellowfin jig stop
- 31.16 x 117.29 Yellowfin jig stop
437 and the 483/500
The BIG Bluefin are still holding to these spots. Some 40-60lb Tuna and some 70-90lb Tuna and some gear busting 100 to 150+lb models are in the zone.
These Bluefin are extremely tough fish and any gear under 40lb is not going to get the job done. The Capt’s are telling me that this spot of Tuna should be fished with at least 50lb flurocarbon leader and a reel that holds at least 500 yards of 65 to 80lb braid. A 2 speed reel is a huge bonus too.
Some of these battles have been lasting 4 to 5 hours on the big gear. The guys on 30 – 40lb are just getting spooled
This not slam dunk fishing. It is hit and miss. You find them and its ok but some guys are not finding them at all.
Very few kelps in the area. If you get lucky and find one of these they are holding Yellowtail and Dorado along with a shot at a Bluefin.
Look at a 5 to mile block centered at 31.33 x 118.11
- 31.28 x 118.04 483/500
- 31.12 x 118.12 437
- 31.34 x 118.12 Big Bluefin on this sonar mark
238 to the 1140 finger and Lower 500
There are some good kelps around the 238 and down to the south but they are few and far between.
Most of the better kelps are on the inside of the high spot mostly with a shot at a Bluefin or an open water Dorado closer to the highspot and down as far as the 1140 finger.
There are a few Yellowfin in the area but most of these so far are coming on single fish jig stops.
The mass of Yellowfin down to the south has not pushed up this far yet.
Report from Lisa:
Fished down near the 238 yesterday but the only kelps we saw were along 117.10 line just north of the inner banks. We went all the way down to the Lower 500.
The water color was a beautiful, clear blue, but it never got above 69.3 degrees.
We finally headed back north when the water temperature had dropped to 68.3 degrees and we never hit the 70 degree water I thought we would.
We saw a seiner boat working the area between the Lower 500 and the inner banks and one sportboat on our way down above the inner banks, but those were the only boats we saw south of the Rockpile (besides the tuna pens).
The swell was pretty big and it was pretty windy, especially as we tried to head west.
The kelps we did stop at about were small and either did not have fish on them, only a mola mola, or blue sharks . . . lots of blue sharks.
Finally, at 6pm we hit a kelp just north of the inner banks along the 117.10 line that had a few medium grade YT. We caught two and continued to head home.
A long day and took some beatings . . .
Off Colonet and down 160 miles
Talked to couple of our Sportboat buddies and they say our current info is still correct. Much of the focus is between the 117.10 line and inside to 116.35.
Been on the windy side the past couple of days with bumpy seas but not a problem for the big Sportboats
The word is that anywhere below the 31.00 line from 116.35 and out to 117.30 and down to the 30.00 line you can find scattered jig stops on Yellowfin tuna and a few schools of Big Bluefin.
The farther down you go the better the fishing gets.
Nearly 100% of the Tuna are west of the 117.00 line with the better shot at a Bluefin being on the western edge of this huge block.
Several boats are down this way fishing and all of them are making big scores.
On the inside of the 117.00 line is where you start running into wide open kelps hold zillions of rat Yellowtail and a few Dorado.
Only small numbers of Yellowfin are on these though at the present time.
Currently the current is running uphill and the fish appear to be moving up hill towards us as well.
General feeling is these fish will push up inside of 100 miles in just a few days to a week.
Report from Todd:
I just got back from my three day on board the Top Gun 90…here is the report.
We traveled down the 117 South degree line as far South as 200 miles. All paddie yellowtail were small mixed with dorado.
We passed up the bluefin for the reported yellowfin which mainly came on the troll.
Early on Tuesday we had fish in the 30 to 40 pound class around the 155 mile range. There was an awesome evening bite that went into the dark and was chaos but we landed them anyway.
We were fishing the 116 x 29 line all day Wednesday but the morning was best. We hooked a marlin on bait which busted off then Wednesday got one on the troll that was landed and brought on board (they reported it released). On our way back we saw a few boats on the 295 fishing paddies but not much else. We passed a monster paddie this afternoon west of the Nados, with birds on it, at 32 21 46 x 117 19 056. I suspect the yellowfin to be good but the yellowtail and dorados all the way down were small. we did get a few troll dorados that were 15-20 pounds but not on the paddies.
All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
If you go fishing please give us a call or shoot us an email.
