Welcome to the NEW Fishdope website!!

Be sure to check out all the new features like all the different charts and the Bite zone chart.

Should be interesting to see how this works out in regards to where the fish are biting.

We are still working out the bugs that happen when ever you open up a new website.

Thank you all for your patience during this process.

Santa Monica Bay

Tough fishing except for Rockfish and Sculpin on the Short Banks.

Best action is King Harbor for Bonito. Lots of them in there by the bait reciever while fly lining live anchovy.

  • 33.54.960 x 118.33.170 Short Bank
  • 33.53.000 x 118.33.810 South Bank 33 Fathoms

  • 33.52.870 x 118.32.130 Inside S 26 Fathom

Catalina Island

Yellowtail are being found at the east end, K-20, Hen Rock, Gilbralter, and Red Bluff. It’s all on the live Squid.

Once again last night there was Squid at The Isthmus, Lions Head, Whites Landing and Hen Rock just to name a few. In fact squid is now almost everywhere along the front. Might even be to much squid now.

No special squid light is needed right now. You can get a float with a flashlight.

The Yellowtail are running from 10 to over 20lb with most those 10lb models.

Darrell is MIA. No word if he got the boat fixed or if the boat is still down for repair

Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

San Clemente Island

White seabass showed well on the backside for the Freedom over the weekend.

Try looking at the Cove and then the backside at the Caves, Lost Point or Eel Point. Remember, fish the conditions and not so much the spots. If you see water that looks right, take a look at it.

  • 2.49.00 x 118.23.00 Pyramid Cove
  • 32.48.45 x 118.24.17 The Caves

LA Harbor

The Twilight fishing for sand bass continues to be great for the guys on the Native Son. They are fishing structure spots just outside the harbor with frozen Squid strips for mostly legal Bass with some pushing the 8lb mark.

A trick that is working good though is to bring 2 rods. Rig one with a Squid Jig and the 2nd one with a 1 1/2 leadhead. Catch a squid and use it for bait. The jumbo bass are being caught this way

Squid is still floating at night. The location is at 33.38 x 118.11.

  • 33.41.06 x 118.07.73 Sand Bass Junction
  • 33.39.03 x 118.06.08 Izors Reef

Dana Point

Calico Bass are eager for an Anchovy at Salt Creek and San Mateo. Super clean 70+ degree water right now.

Not much of anything else happening though except for the Rockfish off Box canyon.

Update: Large numbers of Squid have been located at San Mateo Point and with them are some Seabass and Yellowtail.

Lots of Squid light boats will be on it tonight.

  • 33.28.65 X 117.43.38 Salt Creek
  • 33.28.81 x 117.44.58 Salt Creek 2
  • 33.26.70 x 117.41.00 Dana Hard Bottom

  • 33.19.08 x 117.31.76 Box Canyon #2
  • 33.17.29 x 117.34.15 Box Rockfish

Oceanside

Very slow along the beach. NOTHING wants to bite. Water is clean and warm. The bait is all giant sardines and this might be part of the problem.

  • 33.14.300 x 117.27.300 Clam Beds
  • 33.14.400 x 117.26.270 Golf Ball
  • 33.10.340 x 117.22.700 Buccaneer Pipe

San Diego Bay

report from Jeff:

Fished the San Diego bay today with the kids.  Lots of lizards and sand bass.  They like white and orange with strips of squid.

OFFSHORE

US Waters

Kinda quiet today considering this is a holiday.

Most of the info coming in is from Mexican waters.

Dana Point and the 267

As of the Noon hour no reports of any guys out looking for the kelps with Dorado on them. Maybe they are not finding any or maybe it’s just a lack of boats looking

43 fathom spot

A few kelps out this way are holding Dorado and Yellowtail.

Try looking around the 300 spot which is at 32.34 x 118.02

A Yellowfin was caught in this area on Sunday. No numbers on it however

Tanner and Cortez Banks

The Bluefin are back or still on the bank. The Freedom ran a 2.5 out here and made a killing!

The guys landed 63 Bluefin 15-18 lbs., 43 Yellowtail 25-45 lbs., 17 White Seabass 20-40 lbs. – over 100 Big Bonita, 2 Barries, 42 Sheephead, 1 Lingcod and Limits of white fish

The Seabass and Barracuda were caught at San Clemente Island.

Once again all of this action came on live Squid! If you don’t have it don’t waste the fuel and run out this way unless your after the Bonito and rockfish

Some rain showers moved across the Banks during the 3 to 4pm hours today

UPDATE: The Thunderbird was at the Cortez today and has boated 170 Bluefin and 30 Yellowtail!!

  • 32.26 x 119.08 Cortez Bank
  • 32.42 x 119.08 Tanner Bank

From Butch Diaz, the 2nd skipper on the Freedom:

Great trip this weekend on the mighty Freedom 2 1/2 days.

Drove from San Pedro to the tanner bank Then back to San Clemente Island then back to the Cortes Bank then from the Cortes to 22nd st I logged 250 miles behind the wheel of the freedom then 18 miles in the truck to home.

MEXICO

Much slower fishing in the northern areas today. Why is a mystery. The water is warm and clean just the volume of fish seem to be gone.

Best fishing is from 70 miles down and to the south.

South 9

Quiet….Kelps are not holding for 1 boater in the area looking. Lot’s of birds and life though.

226 / 302 / 230 / San Salvador Knoll

Some Dorado are still on kelps through out this area. Must less volume seen today than over the past couple of days.

The fish you do find are tough, though, tough to get to bite a bait.

If you run into this problem try this….

If live bait doesn’t trigger a strike try trolling past a kelp and rip the feathers (pink/white is hot) when they are next to the kelp. This could trigger a reaction strike.

JD on the Breakaway scored limits doing this trick when they wouldn’t touch any sort of bait.

Look around between 32.21 x 117.51 and up to 32.33 x 117.35

Due west of Todo Santos Island and the Banda Bank

Heard 1 report of jumping Bluefin at 31.44 x 116.59. These guys didn’t catch any of them though.

Another boater reported that they found a few kelp with Yellowtail. 1 of them was at 31.38 x 117.06 The second one was about 1/4 mile away.

  • 31.36 x 116.58 Yellowtail kelp

238

Kelps in the area are holding Yellowtail and Dorado. Some have a few small Bluefin too.

Above this point the water is kind of a dead zone without much in it although it is clean and warm at nearly 70 degrees.

  • 31.33 x 117.15 kelp
  • 31.37 x 117.16 Kelp

Report from Brian at Voyager Yacht Charters:

Returned tonight from an overnight charter out of San Diego. Worked the 117.11 line down to 31.44 for nothing. Water was clean but kelps were non existent. We started working a small temp break west and found a nice paddy that was holding located 31.44 x 117.14. We pulled 8 dodo off it all of which were 12# plus including a 30# bull. We stopped on a few kelps on the way up the line for some YT and a smaller pair of dodo’s. All in all a slow day the most part besides the one stop.

Cheers, Brian Perrin VoyagerYachtCharters.com

483/500

The BIG Bluefin have popped back up.

Several boats got into them. The Tuna were big mean and nasty with many 60 to 75lb fish hooked and about half landed.

There was also some real monsters caught like the 141lb unit caught on the Pacific Dawn.

Kelps are few and far between and the one’s that are found have mainly Rat Yellows and maybe a Dorado or 2.

  • 31.22 x 118.07 Bluefin Breezer
  • 31.20 x 118.10 Bluefin
  • 31.29 x 118.08 Bluefin

Report from Tom Holand

The American Seiner plane saw major tonnage yesterday afternoon and early evening at the 483/500. Football field size schools.

2 of the big american seiners are on their way.

Cape Blanco formerly Donna b and Ferrigno Boy are steaming that way.

Lower 500 and to the South East

This is the area to keep an eye on. Some Yellowfin are filtering into the area and some have been caught on jig stops. No volume yet but the stuff down below is moving up and parts of it could arrive at anytime now.

In addition to the Yellowfin some really good Yellowtail kelps are being found and some of them have Dorado too

Take a look at at north – south line centered at 30.58 x 116.40 and out to the east or west a couple of miles

150 to 170 miles

Wide open Yellowfin and Yellowtail fishing this morning. The Yellowfin are 18 to 30 and the Yellows are rats but a few bigger models up to about 20lbs are mixed in as well.

Good Numbers of Bluefin are in the zone too but the boat I spoke with didn’t have any yet.

Everything was coming off a kelp, but other boats are finding Jig stops, Breezers, fish under Tern Birds and on Sonar marks.

Everything down here is still under the 30.00 line and just outside of the Tuna Hole. The area of fish extends almost all the way to outside of San Benitos Island.

It is a very large mass of tuna and its on the move to the north.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·

Report Updated: September 20, 2013 at 10:49 pm

Thanks for the heads up with the error about “You reached the view

limit for this month”. The chart views are now fixed and shouldn’t be a problem again.

Welcome to the NEW Fishdope website!!

Be sure to check out all the new features like all the different charts and the Bite zone chart.

Should be interesting to see how this works out in regards to where the fish are biting.

We are still working out the bugs that happen when ever you open up a new website.

The forums are still down but the should be up within a few days

Thank you all for your patience during this process.

Redondo Beach

Some nice quality bass are falling for skiff guys fishing the plastic in the evening along the King harbor Breakwall.

Inside the harbor the Bonito are still chewing good. Anchovy is the key. If they get a load of Anchovy the bite goes crazy on 2-3lb Bonito.

Catalina Island

Once again last night there was Squid at The Isthmus, Lions Head, Whites Landing and Hen Rock.

Yellowtail are being found at the east end, K-20, Hen Rock, Gilbralter, and Red Bluff. The latter spot is probably the best with 1 boat scoring up in the teens yesterday.

The Yellowtail are running from 10 to over 20lb with most those 10lb models. All the Yellowtail continue to bite on Live Squid only. Without it your not going to catch one.

Darrell is MIA. No word if he got the boat fixed or if the boat is still down for repair.

Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

LA Harbor

Last night the Sand bass bit good again for the guys on the Native Sun. Mainly all legal sized Sand Bass too.

Live Squid and strips of fresh dead pinned on lead heads is doing the damage.

Squid is still floating at night. The location is at 33.38 x 118.11.

Salt Creek is having a nice Calico bass bite now. Most of the rest of the area remains slow.

Water is 70.4 degrees at the harbor mouth this morning.

Update: Capt. Dave Hansen stopped at San Mateo kelp and found super clean warm water. Calico bass action was non-stop with about 100 of them released. He also saw Yellowtail and a few big barracuda swimming around. Visibility was around 50 feet.

The Squid Bed right outside the harbor mouth is still kicking out Squid everynight and some Yellowtail are on it. Some big halibut are showing as well.

The Yellow bite ends at 9am or earlier but the Halibut is an all day thing.

DORADO BABY!! Getting numerous reports of Dorado holding on kelps of Dana and out to the 267.

Early reports are saying the fish have lockjaw and are not willing to bite.

Water temp is 74.5 degrees. Here we go! Great weather the next week too. None of the nasty NW wind is in the forecast.

Here is a trick to try. This is working on the Dorado off the 302 area right now.

If live bait doesn’t trigger a strike try trolling past a kelp and rip the feathers when the are next to the kelp. This could trigger a reaction strike.

33.18 x 117.45 Large kelp with lots of Dorado on it

33.14 x 117.46 Small kelp with Dorado

33.16 x 117.41 Kelp

report from Chris:

left late this morning 6am. dana
went straight out to a spot 2 mi east of 277 where yesterday we  found 71 deg water and a small kelp with a bunch of small yellows. we saw tons of birds and a breezing marlin in the same area yesterday.
there was a ton of jelly fish clumps or egg sacs in the water not sure what they were. didn’t bring bait so threw every iron, feather, fish trap we had at them and couldn’t get them to bite.
went back to the same area today, could not find the warmer water stayed at 70 until we crossed the 277 then hit a small band of 71 deg water.  barely saw any birds, no kelps. trolled the line to the 209 for nothing.
very lifeless water. no jellyfish or sacs, very little birds, no kelps or ever a shred of kelp. yesterday looked so promising but today everything looked really lifeless.
def did not find any 74 deg water. then ran home to dana in mixed up chop.
still better than working.

277

Kelp at 33.12 x 118.01 was found to have some 12lb class Yellowtail on it.

Another boat in the same area had a double jig strike on Marlin and lost them both.

10 miles off La Jolla

Kelp here are once again holding Yellowtail and now some of those have Dorado too.

32.47 x 117.35 kelp

31.49 x 117.36 kelp

43 Fathom Bank

No reports of anybody catching those Tuna the spotter plane saw but 1 boat found a kelp at 32.37 x 117.58 with some yellowtail and Dorado on it.

There was also a ton of 5 inch Bonito on it.

Several spots of Saurie’s. Little 1 inch ones. These spots have been holding the Marlin in recent days although these guys didn’t see any billfish.

Report from the “No Banana’s”

Fished Saturday from 182 to 43 to east butterfly then back to 181. Beautiful blue water between 67.5 to 69 degree’s. All patties we found were holing more bait than the receivers. Radio chatter indicated some dorado at the 302 but most had lock jaw.

MEXICO

226 / 302 to the San Salvador Knoll

Still a hot spot for Dorado. Strange but the guys are very few if any Yellowtail in the area. It’s all just straight Dorado.

The fish are on kelps and they are also traveling in open water schools. Color spots and tern birds are giving these away.

The Dorado are not wanting to bite very good however. Today when you find them, they are hooking 1 or 2 before it shuts down and the fish get lockjaw.

Bottomline….There is far more dorado out here than the numbers are showing. These fish could explode at any moment.

32.24 x 117.45

32.28 x 117.45

32.30 x 117.37 loaded! Not biting

Report from the vessel Broadway:

Got into the Dorado on the 302 Here are some pics of what we found.

Hidden bank

Only 1 report of a kelp holding Yellowtail.

The guys also said the Tuna Pens are still down around those numbers they have been at. Problem is though the Mexican navy is sitting on them and not letting anybody come in close to them.

31.56 x 117.28  Yellow Kelp

Bottom of the 1010 / D220

A few large kelps down at the bottom of the trench were found to be holding large amounts of Yellowtail, some dorado and Bluefin too.

31.35 x 117.43 Big loaded kelp

31.37 x 117.44 loaded kelp

31.35 x 117.40 kelp

483/500

Excellent Bluefin bite for the Blue Horizon as they scored limits of Tuna working around 31.24 x 118.05 This is the center of a 5 mile block

Report from the Aluminator:

Fished the 483/500 in lake like conditions. Most of the action was 10 miles west, we started east. A few of the kelps were holding all you wanted 5-7# yellowtail and a few dorado. Most of the radio chatter sounded like those that were in the zone early and fished deep did catch nice sized BFT. We worked into the west area in the afternoon but saw no meter marks that looked like tuna. We loaded the bait a little light and only lost three pieces.

Limits on YT and Dorado.

437 to the Dumper

The afternoon yesterday saw some action after a rather slow morning. Some mixed grade Bluefin showed up. Some 15 to 20lb fish and some 40 to 60lb models.

The numbers from yesterday are still good plus add in these from early this morning.

This stuff appears to be moving slowly to the NW.

31.40 x 118.21

31.42 x 118.22

238

Kelp zone. Most of it is on the bank or just above it and to the west now. Yellowtail along with a few Dorado and a couple of Bluefin are showing on them.

31.38 x 117.13

31.34 x 117.19

31.27 x 117.21

31.29 x 117.18

Off Colonet and the Lower 500

Yellowfin numbers are building up. Add to that a huge volume of fish is to the south and pushing up.

Right now most of the action is on Yellowtail and Dorado on kelps. Some Bluefin is around as well.

Watch for the Yellowfin action here to jump in the coming days.

31.04 x 116.44 Yellowfin jig stop

31.02 x 116.48 Yellowfin Jig Stop

31.11 x 116.48 Loaded kelp

150 to 170 miles

Excellent fishing for 25 lb Bluefin and YELLOWFIN from 20 to 35lbs.

Yesterday saw stop after stop for the Long Range boats.

One boat turned in a count of 100+ Bluefin and 75+ Yellowfin along with some kelp paddy Yellows and Dorado for just a single day (1st of a 3 day).

The fish are being found by Kelps, jig stops, sonar marks and finding puddlers.

Water temp is 71 to 72 degrees

All of the stuff is pushing up the line with a strong uphill current!

September is looking good right now.

Report Updated: September 20, 2013 at 10:44 pm

Thanks for the heads up with the error about “You reached the view

limit for this month”. The chart views are now fixed and shouldn’t be a problem again.

Welcome to the NEW Fishdope website!!

Be sure to check out all the new features like all the different charts and the Bite zone chart.

Should be interesting to see how this works out in regards to where the fish are biting.

We are still working out the bugs that happen when ever you open up a new website.

The forums are still down but the should be up within a few days

Thank you all for your patience during this process.

Redondo Beach

The Squid are still at Hermosa but nobdy is fishing it.

Calico bass are turning on for guys fishing the breakwall at King harbor.

Some nice quality bass are falling for skiff guys fishing the plastic in the evening.

Inside the harbor the Bonito are still chewing good. Anchovy is the key. If they get a load of Anchovy the bite goes crazy on 2-3lb Bonito.

Guys on the breakwall are catching a few but the better action is happening for the Skiff guys.

Catalina Island

Lot’s of Squid around and the numbers are building.

Last night there was Squid at The Isthmus, Lions Head, Whites Landing and Hen Rock.

A few Seabass have found the Squid too. The Isthmus spot has seen a couple caught on both of the past 2 nights

Darrell had to run inshore to get a repair done but should be back out tomorrow

Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

Report from Ryan Lawler:

Good Squid float last night at Whites landing. Didn’t even need a proper Squid light as the floated easy with just the decklights.

Squid 8-31

San Clemente Island

Squid is in the cove in limited numbers and Sea Lions are on it too.

Along with the Squid some larger grade Yellowtail and a few White Seabass are showing.

A little more of this can be found at the Caves.

Up the front the Yellows are still hanging out at Purse Seine Rock and White Rock.

Calico Bass fishing is good at almost any thick kelp spot or Boiler rock.

Still not much is happening though. Calico bass fishing is mostly slow for a legal sized fish but the shorts are coming back to life.

The best bassing is happening up at Salt Creek right now.

There was also a big Sheephead caught on the Sum Fum.

Check out this 18lb Goat! Nice one Peter!

18lb sheephead 8-31

La Jolla / Point Loma

Nothing new to report. Yellowtail have been showing at the Squid bed at Crystal pier and at the Southern end of the MPA. This is a morning bite and is over by 9am

Get your Squid and get on them quick because after that you stuck with Rockfish for the rest of the day.

32.47.58 x 117.16.58· Pacific Beach Artificial Reef – Crystal Pier

Coronado Islands

Really quiet today, considering it is Labor Day weekend.

Still a few fish were found at the Middle Grounds and at the North end of South Island.

Water is warming back up and getting clean so the bite could rebound at any moment.

Slow Trolling is working best right now.

Avalon bank

A big 20lb class Yellowtail was found on a kelp by Capt Dave Hansen. He said other kelps in the area only had Mackerel on them.

14 Mile Bank

Several reports of jumping Dorado although we don’t have any reports of any of them being caught. These are open water fish and not on kelps.

Might want to drag a pink/white feather in this area right now.

277

Once again, more Marlin jumpers and at least 1 hooked.

They are on the ridge running from the 277 into the slide.

289

Marlin are still on this highspot too and some jumper Dorado seen as well.

Jimmy Decker leadered another marlin close to the Highspot yesterday.

Nobody has been able to hook any of the Dorado however.

These Dorado appear to be on schools of tiny sauries about 1 inch long.

If you find one of these bait balls it will likely have a marlin or 2 close by as they are feeding on this stuff too.

Off La Jolla

Report from Jim Rome fishing with Monte Teo and his Girlfriend

Water cleans up 8 or so outside La jolla. 52/32 kelp with yt no bites. 72degrees. 50/35 huge kelp with mixed grade yt that would not bite. 45/32 big kelp with small yt that would not bite.  Lots of bait on kelps and in open water.

181/182 ridge

Dorado watch is on now……

Lots of Dorado are showing on kelps just to the south around the 302 and the current is running uphill.

Water is super clean and 70+ degrees

43 fathom spot

No catch reports from this area yet today but the spotter plane flew over the area yesterday and found several schools of “Tuna” numbering over 100+ fish in each school.

The location of these is

32.36.08 x 118.03.90

32.39.10 x 118.07.90

MEXICO

302 / 226

Good numbers of Dorado are on kelps in the area.

Lot’s of them are being tight lipped and not really wanting a fly lined Sardine but here is a trick that worked great for Steve Brown.

His group got them by slow trolling up to a kelp and then ripping the jigs past the kelp triggering a reaction bite

All the Dorado they got were in the 15 to 20lb class Hot colors were PINK/White and Black/Green.

Also seen in the area was a spot of Dolphin that were “talking” This refers to Dolphin jumping up and spinning and doing back flips. When you see them doing this 95% of the time they have Tuna running with them.

They did meter some but didn’t get any to bite.

Water temp was 70 to 71 and super clean.

32.26 x 117.37 Kelp

32.26 x 117.38 Kelp

32.29 x 117.39 Dolphin with Tuna on them

32.28 x 117.42 Kelp

Report from the Hystix:

Fished out to the west at 32.20/117.47 and found a nice area of kelps holding Dodos. They’re still keyed on those micro baits and wouldn’t eat ours that well. We managed 5 short bites by slow trolling and landed one. Also found a couple of loaner YTs. Weather had the slight morning sickness and then beautiful in the afternoon.

302 8-31

San Salvador Knoll

JD on the Breakaway had great day today. They found a pair of kelps holding lots of 15 to 20lb Dorado. The group  caught limits and left them biting

32.25 x 117.49

32.29 x 117.36

213 / top of the 1010 Trench

Very slow. Kelps found were holding nothing.

No birds, No bait, and no meter marks.

Bottom of the 1010 and the D220

Mixed results. Some guys are not finding much and some guys are scoring good.

Fishdope member Rod on his boat Rodpressure was one of the guys that scored with limits of Yellowtail, 1 Dorado and 1 Bluefin for the 4 guys on the boat.

31.30 x 117.41 kelp

31.36 x 117.41 kelp

31.32 x 117.38 kelp

437

Some good spots of puddling Bluefin are being found in this area now. Good chance these fish are the same ones that have been on the 483/500 over the past few days.

take a look around a 5 to 10 mile block around 31.38 x 118.16.

31.35 x 118.14 Sonar Bluefin

31.40 x 118.17 Puddlers

483 / 500

Well it appears now that this area has dried up. Slow fishing for most here yesterday, and has made most of the boats now moved out in different directions today.

Some fish are likely still around but it appears now that the bulk has moved on. 437 area to the NW is the likely area.

238

Decent kelp paddy fishing in this area. This stuff appears now to be pushing up as before the best zone was well below the 238 and is now on the bank and just above it.

Lokk at a long east west block centered at 31.35 x 117.12.

Water temp is up to 69 and the water is clean blue.

Mostly Yellowtail on these kelps but some Dorado and Bluefin are being caught. Some signal of Yellowfin too as the Dolphin are acting like they have tuna with them.

31.36 x 117.13 Kelp with Yellowtail, Dorado and small Bluefin.

31.35 x 117.16 Yellowtail kelp

East and Southeast of the Lower 500

Kelps are holding yellowtail, Dorado mostly.

Not many Tuna around but there are some.

A few guys have found Yellowfin and one found a couple of Bluefin on a kelp.

The numbers of Yellowfin appear now to be on the rise. Conditions are excellent for them right now with water temp up above 70 and the water is very clean.

31.06 x 116.49 kelp

31.08 x 116.50 Yellowfin jig stop

155 Miles

The Long Range fleet is working down off San Martin, near the Tuna Hole and catching a mix of Bluefin and Yellowfin tuna today.

Yellowfin numbers here are much better now than they have been all season.

Looks like this stuff is beginning to push up now.
