Channel Islands
SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE TONIGHT
Wind has blown most everybody off the water. When the weather backs off the Halibut at Santa Rosa Island might still be biting. Right now its to windy and rough to tell.

Marina Del Rey
Nothing has changed here all summer.
Rockfish and Lingcod on the Short Banks…… Guess it’s still last winter in Santa Monica Bay.
1 boat did mange to find good White Seabass action at the Hermosa Squid bed yesterday.

Catalina Island
Once again the word is to stay east of Long Point. All the reports of Yellowtail for days now has been at spots like Hen Rock and K-20.
If you can get Live Squid and a downhill current you stand a good chance at hooking a few.
The bite now is slower though than it has been in recent weeks.
There are 2 classes of Yellows. Some are 10lb fish and the others are 20lb models.
At last word Darrell is still down getting the Mary Claire fixed but he plans to be out tonight. Call him first to make sure.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!
33.24.35 x 118.21.93  Hen Rock

33.22.23 x 118.20.72  Gallaghers – 12 fathoms
33.21.75 x 118.20.03  Frog Rock

San Clemente Island
Live Squid and Yellowtail are on them in the Cove. No big numbers lately but the fish are there. Sea Lions are a major issue however. They are making it tough to make bait and then stealing hooked Yellowtail.
No mention of any Seabass in the past few days. There is almost always a chance for them if you can find the conditions on the Back side. Try looking at Eel Point or the Dunes.
32.49.00 x 118.23.00  Pyramid Cove

South of Oceanside
Conditions are clearing up to the south of Oceanside now and the water is warming up quickly. It’s up to close to 69 degrees again.
Some Calico Bass are beginning to show interest again with the better conditions.

32.57.000 x 117.16.750  Del Mar Kelp

Lots of Mackerel running up and down the kelp line. They are almost a pest at times.

OFFSHORE

ALBACORE!!!!!!!!!!! 500 Albacore on 1 boat in a single day!!!!

OK now that I got you attention………. Got a call from my very good friend, Capt Wayne Carr. He is running the Jig Boat Connie Marie and they boated 500 Albacore yesterday.
The location of this smoking hot bite was at 48.00 x 130.16.
Those numbers place them at about the Canada – US border and 35 miles offshore.

So is anybody wondering where our Albacore are now???

On the local scene,
Lot’s of talk of sloppy conditions this morning. It’s fishable, just uncomfortable

US Waters

9 Mile Bank
Report from Jime Rome fishing with Moti Teo:
Fished the 9 mile bank to the ridge and in an area 10 miles north and south of there for a few YT. Not many kelps, windy whitecaping most of the day. Best water was 10-18 miles from Mission Bay. Outside that it was cooler, greener and held less life. Bait held up today.

Cortez Bank
Lot’s of Big Yellowtail and Bluefin Tuna right on top of the highspot, but there are Bluefin scattered all around the area as well.
Really good numbers of Jumbo Bonito too. Many of these are in the 12 to 14lb class.
32.26.25 x 119.07.50 Cortez Bank

Report from Lia at Newport Landing:
What can be described as just awesome fishing on the Thunderbird fishing yesterday Weds August 7 on their 1.5 day tuna trip with 143 yellowtail (15-40+ pounds), 28 Bluefin Tuna, and 110 big bonito (4-14 pounds)for their 23 anglers fishing the Cortez Bank offshore.  Pretty much non-stop action on yellowtail ,tuna, and bonito on this trip.

MEXICO

302
Several reports of guys looking around this bank and not finding much except for a few kelp holding bait.

425 down to the Upper Hidden Bank
Kelps in this zone continue to kick out Yellowtail and once in a while a Bluefin Tuna shows up as well.
Some kelps have Dorado too but no big numbers of them right now.
The area to check out remains unchanged.
Look around a block centered at 32.10 x 117.23

Tuna Pens
31.52 x 117.14
31.48 x 117.13
There are 2 sets of Pens down here presently.
Here is the real scoop on what is happening…….
Right now there are world class Bluefin in the 40 to way over 100lbs living in the waters, in a 5 mile radius surrounding the pens. The water close to the pens is actually not holding much at the moment and tyhose that are being caught close are mostly 15lb fish.
The BIG Bluefin are out away from a mile to around 5 miles away.
Yesterday and again today one spot that came to life was centered around 31.43 x 117.13 which is below the lower pens.
50lb class Bluefin are chewing good for most boats but not everybody. Some are finding the bite to be tough.
Some monster Bluefin in the 80 to 100 to 150lb class are biting for some guys fishing a sardine on a kite rig, just like they do for the Long Range boats.

This bite is so good that nearly every boat looking for Tuna is down in the area today with almost nobody any place else.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
If you go fishing please give us a call or shoot us an email.

Report Updated: September 20, 2013 at 10:46 pm

Catalina Island
Eastern half of the Island is the place to be. The western half has turned slow now for some reason.
All of the Yellowtail reports yesterday and today came from areas east of Long Point.
Live Squid and a downhill current are both MUST HAVE if your going to score a Yellowtail. You can buy Squid in LA and Long Beach Harbors but supplies might be running low. They are expecting to be restocked with Squid by the weekend though.

San Clemente Island
20 to 30lb Yellowtail are still showing on the Squid Grounds in  Pyramid Cove.
Everyday a boat or 2 stops here for 2 to 12 Yellowtail.

LA to Oceanside
NO change……..This is a big stretch of coast but the story is the same. Dirty, cool, Off colored water has made the fishing slow at best.
The best fishing is for Sculpin and Rockfish. Hardly any Barracuda, Sand or Calico Bass action. The is some of those biting but it’s really slow. Nothing close to what it should be at this time of year.
There has been Blue Whales feeding on krill in the Dana Point area the past few days. The krill and whales love that dirty water.
Check out the pics in the offshore section.

La Jolla / Point Loma
Main biter is once again Rockfish. There are a few Calico Bass biting but its pretty slow.
There have been some big Yellowtail biting in the very early morning at the Northwest corner and in the Cove on live Squid, however we didn’t hear of any from last night or this morning.
32.51.22 x 117.17.62  North West Corner
32.51.33 x 117.16.30  La Jolla Cove
32.51.34 x 117.16.62  The Cove

Coronado Islands
Same story here too……….Yellowtail are at the Islands but so are the Sea Lions. The fish try to bite and the Dogs run in and steal “their” fish
The water conditions are not ideal yet, so most are going offshore to look instead.

OFFSHORE

US WATERS

Our plane was up yesterday and found some kelps holding Yellowtail.
33.18 x 118.38
32.45 x 118.18
33.07 x 118.27
There was some life on the Mackerel Bank and more Yellowtail holding deep on kelp from the 277 and towards Catalina. Some word of Dorado on these as well.

The guys also took this collection of pics
This first one shows the strong color/temp break that runs all the way from well above Newport Beach down to the 302
Color break

This next one shows a big school of Risso’s at 32.49 x 117.39
Rissos

Finally this last on is of a Blue Whale in the clean water off Dana Point 6-7 Miles off the Beach.
Blue Whales

Cortez Bank
Lots of LA and Orange county boats are now making trips out here now as there is a good number of Bluefin and BIG Yellowtail biting on the high spot.
Much of the action is coming while sitting on the Anchor at the highspot, but there are also schools of Tuna throughout the area right now.
There is also large numbers of 12 to 16lb Bonito on the Bank.
32.26.25 x 119.07.50 Cortez Bank

Newport landing report:
27 Bluefin Tuna to 47 pounds and 5 yellowtail to 40 pounds was the final count for the 1.5 day on the Amigo that fished Tuesday August 6.  There were about as many lost fish including one person getting spooled on 20 pound test likely large Bluefin tuna.

60 mile bank
Got word that schools of mixed grade Bluefin are on the 60 mile bank and from there to the Northwest towards the Cortez Bank.
This is in addition to the Bluefin seen on the Worm Bank that is about 40 miles to the west.
32.04 x 118.14 60 mile Bank

MEXICO
Conditions today were not ideal with 12 to 16mph wind making for choppy, sloppy seas.
Just about all the big boats today went to the pens some info on other areas was very hard to come by.

425 to the Upper Hidden Bank
A few boaters are out on the water looking at this area and some of them are finding kelps with Yellowtail. Some are rats now but still bigger models over 20lbs continue to be caught.
Look around a block centered at 32.10 x 117.23
32.09 x 117.23 kelp
32.10 x 117.23 28lb yellow on this kelp
32.07 x 117.26 kelp

Report from Jay on the TinKai:
The two of us left Dana Landing at 4:00a, took it slow down to the 425, not a lot of life, heard some radio fish later in the day that they got plenty of yellows there, but we decided to keep going. Ended up East of the Upper Hidden, beautiful 67.33 blue water (warmed up later in the day), with a nice patty waiting for us. Only found two yellows that stayed on, farmed a few more. Kept going West toward the bank and found another patty, loaded. Immediate hookups, I quickly got my limit of YT, my buddy farmed a couple more but connected with a nice 22lb Dodo. One more smaller Dodo followed and then we landed what we think was a small bigeye. It definitely wasn’t a bluefin and 99% sure it wasn’t a yellowfin. Probably went about 12 lbs. Anyhow, weather was beautiful, overall nice day. Biggest YT went 32 lbs. Definitely some quality fish off the pad dies this year. All fish were on Sardines, decent bait from MB. Final count, 7 yellows, 2 dodo’s, and 1 BET. Have fun!

Tuna Pens
2 sets of Pens
31.52 x 117.14
31.48 x 117.13
Hot bite on 35 to 60lb Bluefin for some this morning while some other boats are scratching away at them.
Almost the entire San Diego fleet has at least started their day out fishing around these this morning.
Hot sonar stop happened at 31.43 x 117.13. Another good stop was happening at 31.45 x 117.14

UPDATE: Some boats are having a really big day working the waters a few miles away from the Pens.
Capt. Scott McDaniels on the Sea Adventure 80 called in with around 100 Bluefin with almost all of them in the 35 to 75lb class!! He said the trick was to get away from the pens and work the area all around them from a 1/4 mile out to 3 – 5 miles. The action close to the pens was kind of spotty.

Report from Rick, He took a trip out on the Fortune:
I was on an open charter with the Fortune and Bruce Smith Capt. Great Boat and Great Crew. Fished the pens on 8/6/2013. Morning bite was on. PM bite slowed as the weather picked up. 19 guys boated 81 tuna, 2 dodo’s 2 yellowtail and released one Striped marlin. The entire San Diego fleet was there including the long range boats. 30 lb flouro and no more. Long soaks were working well. Pens were on the move north when we left. Rick The Double D

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·

MAKE – A – WISH Tuna Challenge 2013
It is a win-win situation when you can have a great time fishing with friends and family while making a child’s dreams come to life. Especially when that life hangs in the balance.
The 2013 Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge began in 1990 and raised $800.
To date, with the help of volunteers, organizers and you, the Tuna Challenge has raised 2,690,000 dollars. That has sponsored a bunch of wishes for children with life threatening medical conditions.
tuna challenge. The money raised stays in the San Diego area and the local chapter has granted more than 3,000 wishes.
The Tuna Challenge will take place August 24, 2013. There will be other related events like the Tuna Fishing Seminar on August 1st, during which local captains will give their first hand insights into local fishing techniques. The awards will follow on Sunday August 25th. Auctions, raffles and great prizes will all help raise money for this ultra-worthy cause.

Tuna Tournament
You can sign up for “early bird registration” before August 1st and get all of the details at the Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge website.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation history: In 1980, a group of policeman in Phoenix, Arizona fulfilled the wish of Chris Greicius, a 7-year-old boy who was battling leukemia. Chris’s one ambition in life was to be a policeman. He was sworn in as an honorary patrolman and equipped with a uniform, helmet and badge, and was even taken on a helicopter ride. Chris died five days later and was buried in his uniform and given a police funeral with full honors. From that humble beginning, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has spread throughout the country and abroad to become the largest wish granting organization in the world, with 62 chapters and over 220,000 wishes granted to date.kids charity

SLOW unless you want Rockfish and Sculpin.
For what ever reason the Santa Monica Bay has been a waste of time almost all season long.
Only surface fish happening is some Bonito INSIDE of King Harbor near the bait barge. When they have anchovy for sale the bite can be excellent.
No Anchovy = Slow Bonito fishing.

Catalina Island
All the action is on the eastern side of the Island. Spots like Hen Rock and Gallaghers have mixed grade yellowtail living on them. some are 10lb fish and some are 20lb models.
Live Squid and a downhill current are both MUST HAVE if your going to score a Yellowtail. You can buy Squid in LA and Long Beach Harbors but supplies might be running low. They are expecting to be restocked with Squid by the weekend though.

Still some quality Yellowtail biting in the morning and late in the day in the Cove. There is Squid in the Cove as well but Sea Lions make it tough to make bait
Have not heard of any seabass lately but they could still be around. The back side spots like Lost Point, Eel Point and the Dunes are great areas to look for Seabass.

LA to Oceanside
No change……… This is a big stretch of coast but the story is the same.

La Jolla / Point Loma
Some continued signal of Big Yellowtail in the Cove and some at Crystal Pier. Squid is key to getting one of these Yellows The bite is almost entirely EARLY before 7am and then late at sunset.
Other than this most guys are having to settle for Rockfish. Some Bass are biting but to do any good on them you need to work well back into the kelp and fish the pockets of open water.
32.51.22 x 117.17.62  North West Corner
32.51.33 x 117.16.30  La Jolla Cove
32.51.34 x 117.16.62  The Cove

Coronado Islands
Yellowtail are at the Islands but so are the Sea Lions. The fish try to bite and the Dogs run in and steal “their” fish
The water conditions are not ideal yet, so most are going offshore to look instead.
32.26.85 x 117.18.23  Pukey Point
32.25.80 x 117.16.80  Middle Grounds
32.24.80 x 117.13.88  Ribbon Kelp

32.22.00 x 117.13.26  South Kelp Ridge
32.17.50 x 117.10.50  Rockpile

OFFSHORE
No more Albacore caught or seen since that one fish on Saturday just above the Lower 500.

US Waters
267 / 209 / 182 / 181 / 312
The plane made a couple of passes over these areas today and saw almost nothing as far as game fish.

Report from Kris on the Grim Reefer:
Headed out of Dana Point at 530am. We ran the 279, 209 to the 181. Found almost no kelp. Headed towards the 277 and found a couple small kelps with massive amounts of bait on them and nothing else. Went to the 14 mile bank found a lot of small kelps and no one home…

Cortez Bank
Good fishing out here for 20lb Bluefin and 25 to 30lb Yellowtail.
The action is all coming while sitting on the Anchor at the highspot.
There is also large numbers of 12 to 16lb Bonito on the Bank.
32.26.25 x 119.07.50 Cortez Bank

MEXICO
9 Mile bank / Coronado Canyon
Good looking water, and some guys found Dorado and Yellowtail.
Not every kelp is holding though. you might find a bunch before you find the right one.

425
Lots of guys working this area lately and many are finding good kelps with Yellowtail and a few Dorado.
This zone is from just below the 425 and spreads down to the upper Hidden Bank.
Look around a block centered at 32.10 x 117.23

Hidden Bank to the Upper 500
Several guys reported good kelp paddy fishing in this area over the weekend. They also reported decent numbers of Bluefin.
The Tuna came on kelps with the Yellows and Dorado, on jig stops and on puddlers..
So far this morning reports from this zone have been quiet. Sounds like there are a lot less number of Private boaters on the water.
take a look at an area centered around 31.47 x 117.32

Tuna Pens
2 sets of Pens
31.52 x 117.14
31.48 x 117.13
The bite at the Pens is back on again with 40lb class tuna showing well.
The fish are eager to come to the boat and bite but not staying with the boats for long. The fish then run back up to the pens and you need to start over. A couple of boats did have long drifts and several boats are putting on decent numbers of Tuna.
The upper set is seeing the best action but Tuna are being seen and caught off both sets.

Worm Bank
This bank is well out to the west at 31.59 x 119.01.
The plane flew over this area and saw good numbers of what appeared to be mostly 20lb class Bluefin.
This might be the fish that were on the 483/500 on Saturday.

483/500
This area is dwindling down now. The best bite was on Saturday with many Long Range boats and a number of 1.5 day boats fishing it.
Many of these tuna were in the 15 to 20lb class but some pushing 100 were also caught.
Today there is little if any boat traffic as the guys are either working closer at spots like the pens or they have gone long as the Long Range boats have done.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
If you go fishing please give us a call or shoot us an email.
