Channel Islands
SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE TONIGHT
The hot Halibut bite at Santa Rosa Island is tapering off now. Still some big fish are being caught.
Look at Beechers Bay for the Halibut. The front side of Santa Cruz has some Barracuda roaming around and maybe a Yellow or 2 is mixed in with them.
Other than this its mostly all rockfish and some Lingcod.

Very slow………. Rockfish and Sculpin. Not much else.
Only surface fish happening is some Bonito INSIDE of King Harbor near the bait barge. When they have anchovy for sale the bite can be excellent. No Anchovy = Slow Bonito fishing.

Catalina Island
Yellowtail seem now to be almost entirely on the eastern half of the Island with the western half turning really slow. Even the Barracuda seem to have skipped town.
If your going to get a Yellowtail you will have to have 2 things….Live Squid and a down hill current.
Calico Bass fishing is good for most guys with the really big model showing best on the boiler rocks, in tight where the big boats can’t go.
Last word has Squid for sale in Long Beach and Pedro but Darrell is not out on the water yet. He is still doing some boat work.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

No change. Quality Yellowtail are chewing live squid in the Cove WHEN the Navy allows you to get in there.

LA to Oceanside
This is a big stretch of coast but the story is the same. Dirty, cool, Offcolored water has made the fishing slow at best.
The major biters are Sculpin and Rockfish. Few Barracuda, Calico Bass or Sand Bass are biting.
Coronado Islands
The Islands are not getting much attention but yellowtail are here and they are trying to bite too.
The Middle Grounds and the Lee of South Island are showing sign of both Yellowtail and bait. Plenty of birds too.
Problem is Sea Lions. They are very agressive right now and are stealing a lot of fish you hook.

First Albacore of the Season!
First albacore of the 2013 season taken 81 miles from Point Loma
By: Brandon Hayward
The offshore scene got plenty of coverage over the first weekend of August, as good weather and the great bluefin fishing during the week got both sportboats and private boats offshore.
One of those private boaters was Tim Husband, a well-known SoCal private boater/tournament angler who runs a 28-foot Parker, Two Timer. While often considered a coastal/Catalina Island “seabass guy” Husband also likes to get offshore with his crew, which often includes Bill Bransetter and Ron Springer.
This past Saturday was looking like a standard skiff trip—as in limit, all-you-want yellowtail fishing—and then Springer hooked into something that, at deep color, had a tuna tail and not the short fins that have been the standard sight on this summer’s bluefin.
“We were down 81 miles from Point Loma, about 20 miles off the coast, working our way back from the Lower 500,” said Husband in an interview with SAC.
Ron Springer grabbed the troll rod after the cedar plug it was pulling got bit. Thinking bluefin, it ended up being a surprise when the tuna looked more like a penguin than a bluefin at deep color.
Size?
“I’d say it was at least 30 (pounds),” said Husband, who wasn’t sure if a SoCal boat had caught an albacore yet when the longfin hit the deck.
Here’s to hoping that where there’s one, there’s more coming…
U.S. Waters
Avalon Bank
2 Marlin seen jumping on the bank this morning at around 11am
This is normally a very good area to find one and normally that time starts right about now..
267
Bonito…….Before you get all excited these Bones were about 10 inches long and were found on a kelp at 33.23 x 117.46. This size Bonito would make an excellent Marlin bait. If there are more around out there in this area it might draw in some Marlin. Water is CLEAN and purple blue. Temp is 67.8.
Some Yellowtail are also on kelps but the ratio is still bad at 1 in 15 holding fish.
277
Report from Ryan Lawler on the Shark Bait:
Did the offshore paddy trip out Newport today. Picked a spot a little south of the 277 to head towards. Found a great looking kelp at that way point but… no one home! Story of the whole day. Followed the 118W line down to some numbers above the 43 that worked for us on Friday but 0 kelp in that area today. Moved back up the line and east along the ridge, 0 kelps. Found a line of kelps around the 312 nothing holding. Another line of kelps 6-10 miles off Dana also nothing. Bait on every kelp. Long day on the water. Remind me to not fish on Sundays anymore… I think most of the paddy fish are harvested by that time!
Cortez/Tanner Banks
Good Numbers of Bluefin are now on the Banks along with good number of BIG Bonito.
Therer also some Yellowtail biting on the Cortez.
Watch for this area to get much more attention in coming days.
UPDATE: The Thunderbird made the run out to Cortez today and as of 4pm they had 47 Bluefin and 28 Yellowtail.
MEXICO
425
Report from Shawn:
Pulled limits of YT for 3 of us and left them biting.
Started at the 425. Lots of empty kelps.
Trolled down to the hidden and pulled one small YT off a kelp at 32.09.648 x 117.26.005.
Worked our way west toward the 390. No life. Talked to a buddy and they were doing good on the 117.18 line.
We headed that way and found a kelp at 32.02.32 x 117.20.83 for 3 more YT.
Worked east a little more and found a very large kelp at 32.03.92 x 117.17.73 holding all the YT you could want.
As we slid in on the kelp you could see 50-100 rush the boat. And they were hungry. Put another 11 on the boat and called it a day.
Fished with 2 other boats today. One boat got 12 and the other got 14. They got their fish on the same 117.18 line between 25-32 miles from point Loma.
No big fish. Most were 8-12 pounds with a 17 being the biggest.
Water temp was reading 67.3 to 67.7 Nothing on the troll. No tuna or dorado seen.
Report from David on the Osprey:
Found a paddy SSW of the 425(32.13.79 x 117.24.725). Pickup truck sized. First YT in the boat at 7:30am. 7 hook ups on fly lined sardines, 6 YT in the fish box by 10:30am.
Picked up a 3 ft blue shark on a dead sardine. My partner found out they can reach your hand if you are holding them by the tail. He got a small bite on his wrist.
Bait had rolled; no more live ones. Trolled back to the island drinking adult beverages and eating sandwiches.
Pulled the lines past the islands and ran in to SD.
Got in before the late afternoon breeze came up. Great day on the water!!
Makes up for the last trip. Water at the paddy was 66.5 and a nice purple/blue. Clear enough to see the YTs racing over to your bait.
There was a temperture break between the paddy and the islands. The islands were 68.5 when we went thru the middle grounds about 1:30PM.
Thanks guys,
Osprey and crew
Report from Aaron:
Ran 425, Upper hidden, Hidden and back. On the run back we found a beautiful “bowling pin” kelp with several birds on it. It was holding yellows and we sent one of the guys in the water with the with a spear gun while the other 2 worked the lines. Paid off with a 22lb’er speared, as the YT didn’t want to bite what we were offering on the line. No tuna, plently of grumpy anglers on paddies, but a great day on the water with my 10 YO son. Kid loves Hamachi!
Report from Jeff:
Well we went just south west of the 371 and found nothing then toward the 425 were we found our first paddie for only one YT. Found 2 more paddies a little north east from the 425 for one more small YT. It was rough to.

Tuna Pens
Last word has the pens at 31.48.68 / 117.13.20
The pens move around a little bit everyday
Very early and very late in the day are the time windows to hook a Bluefin. Midday has been slow for well over a week.
Hidden Bank down to the Upper 500
A number of guys reported good kelp paddy fishing in this area yesterday along with a fairly decent number of Bluefin. This seems to be continuing into today as well.
The Tuna came on kelps with the Yellows and Dorado, on jig stops and on puddlers..
1010 Trench / 213 / Upper 500
The best action is up at the upper end of the trench and west to the 213 and also east towards the Upper 500.
Bluefin are on kelps and being found by sonar marks. Most of these Tuna are the smaller 15lb models but there are the 40 to 60lb models around as well.
The kelps are also holding Yellowtail and Dorado
Look at a 5 mile block centered at 31.50 x 117.46 and from there to the east towards the Upper 500
Report from Vince on the Full Tilt:
Left SI at 3am with a nice scoop of dines and reached the 378 area around day break. Knock down at 31.51 x 117.59 on black and purple, spit at color. Trolled for a few hours in 67.7 degree water. Found the mother kelp at 31.53 x 117.49. Loaded up on YT’s to 14lbs and invited a Parker in to join us. Trolled forever. Not a lot of kelps and the ones we found would not bite. Final knock down at 31.51 x 117.44 for our lone BFT for the day. Pens were moving NW and were approx. 32.20 x 117.20 this afternoon.
483 / 500
Good Bluefin action here this morning following good action yesterday
Lot’s of 20lb class fish but a few 60’s and bigger are being hooked. A est. 120lb monster was lost at gaff by one of the Long Range boats here yesterday
Look at an an area centered at 31.19 x 118.09. This just SW of the 483/500 and roughly 90 miles from Point Loma.
Reports are telling us that most of the Long Range fleet is now in the sector
31.22 x 118.07 Sonar mark
31.22 x 118.11 Hot Kelp
31.19 x 118.09 Multiple jig stops on Bluefin around this number
1140 Finger / Lower 500
Bluefin Quality is pretty good with most 40 to 60lbs.
The bite is much better today. The Sea Adventure 80 is in the area and had 50+ Bluefin on by 10am

Channel Islands
Halibut is the headline story. When the weather is down and the wind isn’t blowing to hard the Halibut at Santa Rosa Island is pretty good.
Look at Beechers Bay and inside of Santa Rosa reef. These are all quality fish. the small ones are 10lbs the big ones are close to 50. Average is 15 to 20.
By far the main catch though is Rockfish with most scoring easy limits. Some decent scores of Lingcod too.

Marina Del Rey
What a horrible summer guys are having. The Santa Monica Bay is SLOW SLOW SLOW!!
About the only choice you have is Rockfish and Sculpin on the short banks.
Only surface fish happening is some Bonito INSIDE of King Harbor near the bait barge. When they have anchovy for sale the bite can be excellent. No Anchovy = Slow Bonito fishing.

Catalina Island
No change. Find some downhill current along the frontside and you have a decent shot at catching a Yellowtail.
The Eastern half of the Island from Long point east is best but there are some fish on the western side too. Eagle Reef has some as does Black Rock and West Cove.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!
If Darrell can’t help you all the Pedro and Long Beach bait barges have Anchovy and Live Squid for sale.

Report from Tim on the C-Pelican:
Fished the west end of Catalina and caught a big yellow trolling a sardine Rapala Xrap.
Fish are spread out between eagle rock and whale rock. I didn’t have a scale on board, but it was 46″ long and was probably close to 30 lbs.

San Clemente Island
Quality Yellowtail are still in the cove and in the pre dawn hours you have a shot at a Seabass as well.
Always make sure the Island is open before making the run.

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
Primary catch is Sculpin……
Barracuda and Sand bass are still around but not eager to come out and play.
Water is still off color and chilly. It is recovering but its not up to what it should be.
Twilight Sand Bass fishing is fair but at least they are biting a little bit. Most of these are decent quality
Dana Point to South of Oceanside
Still messed up. Water is cold and dirty. The Bass are trying to bite a little bit but the numbers are low. It’s still going to take more time for this area to recover.
Best bite is for Rockfish at Box Canyon.

There are Yellowtail at the islands but off color water is hindering the bite.
Ribbon kelp and the middle grounds both have numbers of Yellows. Sea lions are thick too.
Slow trolling a Sardine or a green mackerel through these areas should produce a Yellowtail or 2.

OFFSHORE
267 / 209
Report from Derek on the Yellow Tail:
Launched out of Dana point 530am. Headed towards the 209 312 area.
Weather was nice some wind at times. A few empty paddies just bait. Water looked best from 267 to 209.
Headed back that way got lucky for these 2 yellows. 31lbs and 24lbs.
Got them on sardines off a 4 foot paddy at 33.14 x 117.49.
Only fish we saw all day.
182
Lots of guys looking around but not finding much
only word we got of any fish was a 20lb yellow on a kelp half way between here and Mission Bay.
Another kelp at 32.39 x 117.40 was found holding 15lb yellows in the early afternoon..
MEXICO
302
Some good kelp paddy yellowtail fishing in this area. Couple boats called in to say they had limits or close to it.
Report from Alfred on the Kik N Bak:
Left Marina at about 3:00 am. Bait in MB was ok but novice bait guy was not experienced. Has a beard. Some of the pass’s only had 1 or 2 sardines. I think he was asleep when we arrived.
Did not pull up the net in the box to get a good scoop. Gave him $7 tip and he said we gave him too much money. UUHHGG.
Went out to the 182 for nothing, water was smooth with small swells and light wind, started to move south.
Found a 60 lb. Mako cruising around for food so we baited a set up and after 3 tries we hooked him so good the hook was hanging out his gills. He was taking our bait off the hook because the rookie baited the nose. So I put the hook through the body twice and let the hook tip just come out through the body. He had to eat the hook that way.
We started moving down south to the 302 and about 5 mile north of the 302 found a kelp paddie and pulled 2 YT, about 12 pounds, off of it.
A few miles later a school of tuna came up on the port bow about 25 yards away, jumping out of the water on bait. Only lasted a few seconds and sunk out.
Continued south for nothing interesting. Passed the 302 for nothing but other boats to be seen.
Was going to go to the 371 but was getting late, weather started to show white caps about 10:00 or so.
turned to the 425 and did not see anything or hear any radio chatter so made a turn left to the Coronados about 11:00.
Found a kelp paddie about 2 miles away from the islands so we made bait because we only had about 5 very large sardines left.
Finished the day at the Islands with 4 lings on the boat but one dropped over the side, and a couple of nice size sculpin.
No one got hurt, boat ran good, wrapped a bait rig around the prop, some vibration going on one of my props b4 the rig wrapped around the prop, engines ran great, no mechanical problems. Great day on the water.
425 to the Upper Hidden Bank
Kelps found near the 425 are mostly dry but the ratio of holding kelps increases the closer you get to the upper Hidden bank
32.06 x 117.28 Good Kelp
32.13 x 117.25 Good Kelp. Lots of yellows
32.17 x 117.27 kelp
32.18 x 117.21 good kelp
32.03 x 117.24 Yellow and Dorado Kelp
Report from Shad on the Ann Marie:
Left MB 4AM sat- jumbo dinos for bait and ran on smooth seas till dawn, trollers out at the 425 heading south-hidden, 371, 390, 230 302 -home. Not as many patties as last weekend, found one with smaller YT, caught a couple until the usual idiot backed down on it. Found a patty with larger YT on it hungry, one ate 2 baits-2 perfect lip hooks-no angles no tangles!(see photo) Ended up with 5 YT, 2 bigger models-22lbs.
No BFT or dorado. Thanks!
371
There is an area of kelps out to the Southeast and the Southwest of the highspot centered around 32.15 x 117.45
A number of kelps with 15lb class Yellowtail have been caught out here this morning.
32.10 x 117.36 kelp
32.12 x 117.39 kelp
Report from Karen on the bubba Jean:
We fished an area Southeast of the 371 with N 32.13.12 W 117.25.24 as our starting point. Found a good patty in the area at grey light and pulled 1 Dorado & 9 YT. Most 10-15 lbs. Then we went patty hunting. Up to the 371, on to the 226, then in to Point Loma. Party’s found, but no one home. Seas were calm, water temps 65 to 67. 5″ to 6″ dines were beat up; worst bait ever! Most dead loss we’ve ever had.
390
Report from Ross on the Fin”Atic”:
Fished west and started at 390 area. Water was 65 degrees.
Found a nice patty at 32.04.42 x 117.44.55 Put 6 nice yellows to 15 # on the boat.
Worked the temp break from 65 to 68 degrees all the way past the 1010. Lots of kelps along the way most empty. Temp break is only 1/4 mile wide. It would go from 65 to 68 like that. Lots of life and metered lots of fish in the 200 to 300 ft range.
Jig strike at 31.48.25 x 117.49.55.
67.4 degree water, Cedar deep down the middle. 27 lb BF.
31 42.99 117 37.73 68.2 degree Jig strike Cedar deep down the middle, 37# BF.
Worked up the line with many stops on kelps in the 67 to 68 water and at 4pm hit the one the size of a trash can lid that produced 14 yellows from 26 to 34#s.
Fun stuff! Water was calm and flat all day.
Hidden Bank down to the Upper 500
A number of guys reported good kelp paddy fishing in this area today along with a fairly decent number of Bluefin.
The Tuna came on kelps with the Yellows and Dorado, on jig stops and on puddlers.
31.52 x 117.29 Bluefin, Yellowtail and dorado on this kelp.
31.48 x 117.31 Bluefin jig stop
31.45 x 117.31 Bluefin puddlers
31.49 x 117.33 Bluefin jig stop
31.52 x 117.28 loaded kelp
Tuna Pens
31.48.68 / 117.13.20
The pens move around a little bit everyday
Very early and very late in the day are the time windows to hook a Bluefin. Midday has been slow for well over a week.
31.52 x 117.18 Jumpers
Report from Rene on the Reel Vibe:
Set course for Lower 500. Never quit made it that far down. Found a paddy @ 31.48 117.15 with dodos & bft jumping. Boat 2 15# bft and several yellows, and my budddy farmed a dodo off that paddy. Decided to stay in the area where all the pens where nearby. @ 11am decide to scope out the pens. Drifting tight next them produced a solid 40# & 55# fat bft @ about 11:30am. Not much else @ the pens so bailed north paddy hopping. All paddies were loaded 5 miles NE of the hidden with 7-15# yellows. Total 4 bft & 7 yellows for two of us. FYI water was flat with 5-7 knots all day!
Report from Jerry on the Albienut:
Left Shelter Island at 0700 Saturday to fish the afternoon bite at the Tuna Pens.
Arrived at the pens about 1030. There are 7 pens in the area, water was 68.5 deg and really blue. However the bite was really slow.
We caught 1 35# BFT and 1 75# Mako from 1030 to 1730. Fished every pen that was there. Saw Karl fishing on the Reel Deal Catch 2 right next to us but that was it.
Left the pens and trolled back towards Point Loma. At 31.49 / 117.13 we got a double jig strike on Dorado and one bait fish.6#,10# and 14#.
Found 4 paddies on the way home for nothing. As of 6:00 PM the Tuna Pens are at 31.48.68 / 117.13.20 if anyone wants to try them.
Very Tired. Good luck if your heading out.
Jerry
1010 Trench / 213
The new focal point of efforts to catch Bluefin.
The best action is up at the upper end of the trench and west to the 213
Bluefin are on kelps and being found by sonar marks. Most of these Tuna are the smaller 15lb models but there are the 40 to 60lb models around as well.
The kelps are also holding Yellowtail and Dorado
Look at a 5 mile block centered at 31.50 x 117.46
483 / 500
Another new area of Bluefin.
Look at an an area centered at 31.19 x 118.09. This just SW of the 483/500 and roughly 90 miles from Point Loma.
Reports are telling us that most of the Long Range fleet is now in the sector
31.23 x 118.08 Large Sonar mark
31.22 x 118.09 Hot Kelp
31.18 x 118.08 Quad jig stop on Bluefin
1140 Finger / Lower 500
Much slower action but the Bluefin Quality is pretty good with most 40 to 60lbs.
Capt. Dave Hansen was out in the 1010 area yesterday and found the action to be less than stellar.
The guys scored 1 Dorado, 1 Bluefin (on a live squid), 4 Yellowtail and 1 Turtle (released)
Here is some pics of what they found

Catalina Island
Almost no change and thats a good thing!
Yellowtail can be found all along the front with east end spots like Hen Rock and Gallagers holding willing biters IF you have Live Squid and IF the current is running.
West end spot have Yellow on them too along with some barracuda. Spots like Eagle Reef and the West Cove are working.
Some Yellow and Seabass are on the back still. Try Salta Verde and Orange rocks just to name a couple of spots.
Darrell should be around tomorrow morning with Squid for sale. You will need to call him first though to make sure.

Report from Bill Beckman on his boat the happy hour:
I caught this 10 pound calico bass on 30 pound test with a half ounce slider and a7ot hook at hen rock with live squid the fish was deep in the kelp and would not have been caught unless you were using heavy tackle.
LA Harbor
Pretty slow with some Barracuda out on the Horshoe and a few Sand Bass for the Twilight guys. Izors is working at night but is a dead zone during the day time.

Report from Tim on his 17 Triumph:
Went to Izors to find some bass using frozen squid and plastics. Temps inshore around 66 and outside 68.6. Wind was up in the morning(7am) but settled down later(11am).
Started at 70 ft. and went to 110 ft. but nothing on the meter and no biters on the drifts. So I went out past the double rigs for rockfish and found the same thing all the way to Potters reef.
It’s as if the fish vacated Long Beach all together. The one fish that was there were Sanddabs and lots of them. Every drop on squid was instant throughout the usual rockfish areas(150FT.-300FT.).
MUST BE MILLIONS OF THEM
Tim
Dana Point to Oceanside
Very slow. water 64 to 65. Nothing but big Sardines for bait. A few Sand bass and Rockfish and thats about it.
Still waiting for better conditions and better bait.

Lots of boat traffic today. Water is improving now but the bite is still mostly Green Mackerel
If your out in this area looking to catch something give the Rockfish a shot. Both Lings and Rockfish are biting.

Coronado Islands
Very quiet still as most are passing these Islands up to fish offshore. There has been a couple of short reports of Yellowtail at North Island and in the middle grounds.
With the light boat pressure this is a good time to try slow trolling a Sardine or a Mackerel
OFFSHORE
312 / 181/182 ridge
What had been good kelp paddy fishing has dried up. The better area is now 182 to 226.
182 to the 226
Some kelps in this area found to be holding Yellowtail and Dorado.
It’s a crap shoot though. Some never find a kelp with fish while a few lucky guys loaded up
32.36 x 117.39 Hot Kelp
MEXICO
302 /230 /San Salvador
Kelps with Yellows and scattered small spots of Bluefin continue to show.
Not every kelp is holding. something 1 in 4 or 5 is about the right ratio.
425 / Upper Hidden Bank
The area of kelps holding Yellowtail has slipped down a few miles and is now half way between the 425 and the upper Hidden Bank.
Some good quality fish on these. most are 10 to 12 with some over 20lbs.
32.06 x 117.26 Kelp
32.05 x 117.24 Kelp
Hidden Bank
Report from Mark on the Heritage:
Excellent kelp patty fishing between the 425 and the Hidden bank.
Found a massive kelp almost right on top the hidden bank for two nicer model YT, one Dorado, and crap load of standard models.
Almost limits but our bait was done and a Skipjack dropped in and got too close and started reversing back up tothe kelp to shut down the bite.
Awesome calm seas under 10knots with water 65-67.
Double 220 / 1010 / 213
Some activity happening out in this area now. Kelps are holding lots of Yellowtail and Bluefin are scattered all up and down this zone.
expect to see much more stuff happening here for the next several days, maybe longer.
Take a look at an area centered at 31.44 x 117.41. This is a long 6-7 mile long block running north and south.
Talked to Tom Holand on the Oceanside 95. The boat is on the 2nd day of a 3 day trip.
He is working this area today and has found several large kelps holding lots of Yellowtail and Dorado. Lot’s of signal of Bluefin all up and down the trench.
His plan is to stay here and fish all day and perhaps even stay for tomorrow morning.
31.54 x 117.50 Big Kelp with Bluefin and Yellows
31.49 x 117.43 Big kelp, Bluefin and Yellowtail
31.49 x 117.44 Bluefin stop
31.48 x 117.49 Bluefin, Yellowtail and Dorado on this kelp
Tuna Pens
31.54 x 117.12
31.51 x 117.12
Bluefin are still around but most of the time the bite is scratchy at best.
Bite times are early in the morning until about 7am and then after 4-5pm in the afternoon.
Midday fishing has been really slow with almost nothing being hooked or caught.
1140 finger / Lower 500
Mixed results on the Bluefin and Kelp paddy Yellowtail. The area appears now to be drying up.
Some got them good while others didn’t see much of anything.
Look at a 4 mile block around 31.21 x 117.20
31.19 x 117.19 Bluefin on Kelp. some yellow and Dorado on it too
