Marina Del Rey
Sad to say this but its very slow for everything except for Rockfish.
Some Bonito action inside of King Harbor is the only action on surface fish.

Catalina Island
Good numbers of Yellowtail are spread out all along the front of the island.
Yellowtail point had some yellow willing to bite this morning. Find a downhill current and the spot is likely to have some action.
Barracuda are also on the front from Arrow Point and up to the west. If you find them they also have Yellowtail with them.
Calico Bass fishing is on again after a few days of being “off”

San Clemente Island
yellowtail and Seabass both are being caught here when the navy allows it.
20lb Yellowtail are still in the Cove on the Squid Bed and White Seabass are up the backside at Lost Point.
Squid is key for both bites. Without it your chances of scoring are near zero.

LA Harbor
Steady Barracuda action on the Horseshoe continues. These fish are on the move so you’ll need to hunt them down. Watch for birds and jumpers. They are also being found by sonar marks.
Sand bass fishing is so-so with some seeing action and others nothing. Last few days the right depth has been 90 to 110 feet. Nothing shallower or deeper.

Report from Ryan on the Pomaika’i:
“Country Club” fishing today. Slept in, ate breakfast, leisurely drove down to the harbor.
An unhurried pace. Opted to launch out of Dave’s/Alamitos Bay to try and find better water than what had been reported in my usual areas south.
Saw the SWBA tent in the parking lot and the 40 or 50+ rigs that were hours ahead of me. At the very least, figured I’d see some fish at the dock if I had a lousy day!
The water is green and cold on the beach, but as I went out towards the 150 (out past the Horseshoe towards the mid channel rigs) the water cleans up and I measured 65.8 as the warmest piece I found today.
The sand bass were suspended in some areas (around 50 feet in depth) and a few other stones had them pretty close to the bottom. Best action occurred in 95-105 feet of water.
An occasional miss in the higher water column resulted in some quality rockfish down below…..quite a variety today.
I used a Reebs Orange Crab Assassin on one rod and a 5″ swimbait (bleeding mack, or clear/red flake) on the other Revo outfit.
Both got equally hammered. When they wanted to chew, it was on. Nice quality bass up to 3 or 4 lbs….not a single short in the bunch.
The starries and assorted rockfish were chunky. Wind started to blow around 1pm, but still fishable.

Dana Point to  South of Oceanside
The bite is still off. the water is still green. Temps are up to 65 in a few spots but this is still way down from 71 degrees last weekend.
No local Yellowtail. You need to get 4-5 miles off the beach into the warm clean water to find that “magic” kelp.

Mackerel, Rockfish and Lingcod and not much else. The 10+ degree drop in water temp durning the week is to blame for this and sofar it’s been slow to recover.

Coronado Islands
Much improved Yellowtail action but it can’t be considered good fishing. Some guys are doing good while other never get a bite.
Look at the “gap” between the middle island and South Island, and along the lee of South Islands.
A few good scores were made in this zone for the few boats that fished the Islands
Keep an eye open for Bluefin! They are very close by right now. They love to show just to the SW of South Island and out west of North Island.

14 Mile Bank
Report from Patrick on the Whats A Wahoo:
Just north of 14 mile bank. Large kelp paddie with One large yellow. Water temp was 67-69. Stopped on 6 kelps only one held fish. All others had mini macks on them. Total for day one 28 lb yellowtail on a sardine. Longbeach bait barge did not have sardines had to run to newport to get bait.

Yellowtail and Dorado are in the area but only about 1 to 15-20 kelps is holding..

Report from Mark Austin on the Heritage:
Launched DP 6:30am Sunday morning. Bait dock only had anchovy. Some pompano were mixed in with the chovy and produced the first YT at 32.59.816 x 117.52.632, got anchovy YT off the kelp as well. Then got two Dorado at 33.03.417 x 117.44.714. Got short bite three times on this kelp and farmed one. A nice school of 5lb Dorado were crashing on a bait ball near by and also were jumping around the kelp from time to time. The school sunk out before I could get on it but fun to witness the action. Got the Dorado on long soaks. Super stoked to get these 4 fish out of DP. Water temp 66-67 on those kelps.

North 9 mile bank
Scott Wilson and Charles Burguin, deckhands of The Long Run sent this photo of a monster Opah caught off the North Nine Mile bank.
My guys cut the fish without an official weigh in which bites because the world record is 163 and this fish was in the neighborhood

Yellowtail and a few Dorado are moving onto the bank now and are being found on kelp and some open water fish caught on the troll jigs.
A few kelps had good volume of fish on them too.

425 / Upper Hidden Bank
Report from David on the JeriRigged:
Fished the 425 toawrds the hidden bank and back up through the Coronados (b/w North and Middle Island).
We ended up with 9 yellowtail and one dorado. All in the 10-15 lb range.
Lost about 8 more due to pulled hooks, getting kelped, or break offs.
All fish were found on kelps around 5 miles south of the 425.
Was pretty barren out towrds the hidden bank, but that could have been due to grey weather conditions.
Bait was fair until about 2 pm. went 2-3 on the troll on yellow tails after the bait rolled.
There are about 4-5 tuna pens in this general area. We did a few drifts and troll bys with no luck. Got impatient and went  to look for kelps.
First trip of the season and was well worth it.
On the way in, the area from about 0.5 miles SW from the north island at Coronados and SW out from there was really fishy in the afternoon and would be a good bet to start out from there if heading that way.
Water was 60 in SD Bay but 65-67 around the coronados. Offshore around 425 was 65-66.

Hidden Bank
Lots of kelp and lots of Yellowtail. Try looking around  31.56 x 117.28.
No reports of Tuna. All of that is inside to the north and south.

238 / 475 / Banda Bank
Report from Mark aka Chasintuna:
Started out of sd bay last night around 6 o’clock ran down to ensenada for the night left there at 4 am out to the Banda bank came upon the first kelp hit it for 7 fish in about 30 mins.
Ran a little farther to another kelp for another 8 fish.
Easy fishing for the day. Headed back toward home around 9 am stopped at another kelp for a blue shark.
Back home by 2 pm because of the crappy chop out there, but we had a great time!

Tuna Pens
31.52 x 117.12. Current location of the Pens.
The best bite yesterday was in the afternoon between 2 and 5pm.
The quality of Tuna right now is amazing! some 20 to 30lb tuna, some 45 to 65lb Tuna and a few 90+lb bruisers too JD on the Breakaway score a 90lb beast hooked on 40lb with a 7/0 ahi twist hook.
Some nice quality Yellowtail swimming around too, along with a few 10lb Dorado.

Report from Steve on the Kettenburg:
Headed down to the pens and arrived Sat. morning. Seas were a little lumpy on short period, but not bad.
Bait was mostly very big dines in so-so condition. Lost a lot, but had enough for trip.
Lot of pens starting about the 425 on the way down. Meter marks in many places, so I think there is a huge body of fish. First drift through pens saw a lot of marks.
No bites until I dropped a magic metal down about 150′. Two cranks and we had a 15# bluefin. A few minutes later we got 4 on fly lined sardines.
Landed one of about 35#s, others felt bigger. Fished only 40 and 50# rigs.
Decided to head home around 11am. No other boats were hooked up. Still metered a lot of fish.
Got a jig strike near 425 for 10-15# bluefin. Metered a lot around other paddies we saw, but nothing would come up. Most meter marks were deep.
Lots of life and seems like a large body of fish. The wind laid down north of the islands so I think the weather may get better and the fish may make a nice push soon. Plenty there.

Report from Karen on the Bubba Jean:
We fished the tuna pens, per coordinates provided by Fish Dope.
As soon as we pulled up at 6:00 am the bite was on & two of us hooked-up on our first casts. Brought six to the boat, lost one to the fish gods at gaff.
Five fish with these weights; 25 lb. 26 lb. 33 lb. 36 lb. 41 lb.
25 lb. fluoro seems to be the trick; despite all reports of long soaks, most of our fish were caught on fresh, “hot” sardines.
We also got several bites & one fish on the slow grind; making me wonder about slow trolling.
Things tapered off to a slow pick; with conditions being a bit worse than reported, at 12:30 we set the auto pilot for the barn.
Trailered up at 4:30. Rushed home to clean up gear & take some bluefin to our favorite sushi chef, who served up sashimi & spicy tuna rolls!
20 lb. line, 30 minute fights & fresh sushi…..this is what it’s all about!!
Fuel savings on last two trips has easily paid for my annual subscription to Fish Dope!! Thanks guys!!

SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 AM PDT THIS MORNING
The best fishing is for Ling Cod and Rockfish at San Miguel.
The Seabass and Halibut bite at Santa Rosa has dwindled down to near nothing now.
Eagles nest has a small number of Seabass in the grey light of morning.
Some Barracuda are showing at Santa Cruz and on the coast but the numbers are small.

Super clean and warm water along the front side of the Island. Temps are at 69.8 to almost 71.
Yellowtail are roaming around on a bunch of spots from the east end all the way up to the west end and then around the corner to cat Harbor.
barracuda are also on the front from Arrow Point and up to the west. If you find them they also have Yellowtail with them.
Calico Bass fishing is on again after a few days of being “off”

LA Harbor
The Barracuda bite, which has been off and on has turned on and is pretty steady now. Schools of just legal to 7lb Cudas are roaming all over the Horseshoe.
Birds and Sonar marks are giving away there location. These Cuda are not responding to the iron like you would think though. They are biting it but not very good. Anchovy’s and Plastic Swimbaits are working much better.
Trick to getting them on the anchovy is to just keep a bend in the rod and wind on them Pumping them up only makes the line rub on their teeth and that cause them to break off.

Green off color water along the beach.water temps are rebounding. It was 61 on Tuesday, 66 on Friday.
Calico Bass fishing is also rebounding with the warmer water. Most of them are still short of the 14 inch size limit. Lots of 12 to 13 inch bass.
No reports of Yellowtail since the water rolled over.

Lots of big green Mackerel making a pest out of themselves along much of this area.
Many guys are giving up on the kelp and fishing deep for Rockfish instead. Some pretty decent scores on Lingcod are happening as a result.

Much improved water conditions now and Yellowtail are back on the bite. Look at the “gap” between the middle island and South Island, and along the lee of South Islands.
A few good score were made in this zone for the few boats that fished the Islands
Keep an eye open for Bluefin! They are very close by right now. They love to show just to the SW of South Island and out west of North Island.

OFFSHORE
267 / 209
Quite a few boats are running around looking for kelps. Lots of dry ones but some are holding. 1 in 10 to 15 is the ratio of empty to holding.
If you find one it will most likely have 3 to 5 yellows and MAYBE a pair of Dorado.
Don’t be expecting wide open action on these at this current time.

Report from Steven on the Tail Chaser:
Fished about 20 mile off Point Loma on a 250 heading and finding some paddies that did not have any fish on them. Then found a couple of paddies with fish not cooperating after we caught a couple of yellowtails but we saw more under the paddy. Plan “B”… Got the spear guns out and jumped in and we shot five more. Weather wasn’t to bad first thing in the morning, but by 2:00pm it started to get a little snotty out there.

425 to the upper Hidden Bank
Bluefin close to home!
The center of this area is at 32.08 x 117.25 and is roughly a 5 mile block of Tuna.
Schools of 18 to 25lb tuna and schools of 35 to 45lb models are both in the area.
These Bluefin are not line shy and are even jumping on trolling jigs. The Zucchini broomtail, Cedat plugs and the pink and purple Halco 130 plug are all working good.

Tuna Pens
31.51 x 117.12 This is the most current numbers we have but they are moving around a little bit so these numbers are for general reference.
Bluefin are following this set of pens
Most of these are 18 to 25lb fish but there are 40-50lb models in the area as well.
Also swimming around these pens are a few 10lb Dorado and some 20-25lb class Yellowtail.
This bite has been a early morning deal and over by 8am but the surrounding zone is loaded with Bluefin and kelps with Yellowtail.
The hidden Bank to the 475 Knuckle is all reported to have schools of Bluefin roaming around.

Report from Tim:
Got the call to help out captain larry (.private yacht) went to your numbers yesterday .(the pens ).clients could not bait fish that well so decided to troll ….the plugs …around the pens @ 8 knots . Worked great … Picked up 2 dodos to …. And 8 bft …6 came unbuttoned due to slack lines .. and age …but so proud of these guys for sticking it out ..The client were in there late 70s and one guy was 80 something … But they all got to catch there first bluefins
… Pace maker included !… They had to hand off  couple but was a great trip …
 Thanks again for the dope

238 / 475 / Banda Bank
Plenty of kelps holding Yellowtail and Bluefin. Could also see a Dorado or 2
This area has very good volume of fish in it and is the location where the 1 day fleet is working.
31.38 x 117.07 Bluefin jig stop. Lots of bait fish.

1140 Finger / Lower 500 / down to 100 miles
No change here except the area pushed north a couple miles overnight.
OUTSTANDING Bluefin Tuna bite down here. Many boats have had 50 to 100 tuna stops in this location. This morning the bite is about as good as it gets with many calling in 30-40+ at 8am
These are also bigger tuna. Many are over 30 with the average near 45lb. some as big as 75-80lb are being caught everyday.
water temp 68.5

160 to 200 miles
Yellowfin Tuna! Tremendous volume of Tuna! These are 18 to 25lb class fish and its common for any boat down here to catch boats limits in a single stop.
Current water conditions show there is nothing to hold them back from coming up the line.
Also traveling with these Yellowfin are fair numbers of Dorado.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·

Weather Alert
Monsoon rain and Thunderstorms are moving over most all of Southern California this morning.
A repeat of this is forecast to happen Saturday morning as well.
Use extreme cation if you are anywhere you can hear thunder or see lightning.
Keying up you vhf radio creates a very attractive signal for lightning!
stay off the radio while thunderstorms are around.

BAIT REPORT
San Diego Bait Barge   5-8″ Sardine & 3-4″ Anchovy
Mission Bay Bait Barge 5-8″ Sardine & 3-4″ Anchovy
Dana Point Bait Barge  5-7″ Sardine & 3-4″ Anchovy

Santa Barbara Island
Seabass are showing here right up against the MPA boundry on the east side of the Island close to the Anchorage.
SBIMap

Catalina Island
Rain all along the front side of the Island this morning
This weather is having no effect on the fishing.
Capt Dave Hansen is fishing Kathren’s which is a spot close to Gallager’s and hooking a Calico Bass on every cast.
Water is purple blue and 70 degrees.
Schools of Yellowtail are all along the front. Most are 10lb fish but some new 20lb models have just shown up. These Yellows are up west of Arrow Point.
Barracuda are also present. Almost all of them are on west end spots and have Yellowtail mixed in with them.
Lastly some Seabass and Yellowtail are showing at the point just outside of Cat Harbor. A number of both were caught last night.
Darrell will not be at the Island this weekend so you’ll have to make your own or buy from a coastal bait barge.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

San Clemente Island
The cove is set to be open this weekend after being close for the past few days.
Yellowtail are in the cove and are willing to chew on the Live Squid. Some Yellow was also seen at China Point along with a couple of grey light seabass.
Always make sure the Island is open before making the run.

LA Harbor
Its a Barracuda morning. Good fishing for them on the Horseshoe.
Strangley they are still mostly being hooked on the Anchovy or Plastics. The Iron is working but not very good.

Newport Beach
Very slow for almost everything. Sand Bass fishing last night was aweful.
This part of the coast is still trying to recover from the wind.

La Jolla / Point Loma
Lots of Mackerel this morning. On the slow side for everything else.
Heavy wind last night has conditions messed up right now.

Coronado Islands
Conditions are improving now. The water is finally clearing up and the temp is edging slowly up too
Yellowtail are still in the area. Try slow trolling a Sardine or a Mini mac around the Middle Grounds and down through the lee of South Island

OFFSHORE
14 Mile Bank
Just a little bit above the bank and out west of the rigs a kelp was found with about a dozen Yellows on it. The fish got spooked and scattered but they might regroup on it later

Scattered kelps out here are holding Yellowtail and an odd Dorado.
only about 1 in 10 has fish on it though and the ones that are holding only have a few fish on them.

Mexico
425 to the upper Hidden Bank
Good numbers of Bluefin are filtering into the area now.
Most of these tuna are 18 to 20lb class fish but some schools are pushing the 40lb mark.
For what ever reason these Bluefin are eager Troll jig biters. The zucchini broomtail is HOT!!!
There are also yellows on kelps in the area as well.
This is the closest these Tuna have been all year.
Go now while they are still close.
32.09 x 117.19 Jig stop for 2 Bluefin
32.11 x 117.22 Jig stop Bluefin
32.08 x 117.26 Triple jig stop

Tuna Pens
31.51 x 117.12
Early morning is the best chance for a Bluefin off of these. There are a collection of 5 pens here and the southern most pen is the one holding the most Tuna.
Today the bite is really good with lots of tuna being caught
Most of these are 18 to 25lb fish but there are 40-50lb models in the area as well.
Also swimming around these pens are a few 10lb Dorado and some 20-25lb class Yellowtail.
This bite has been a early morning deal and over by 8am but the surrounding zone is loaded with Bluefin and kelps with Yellowtail.
The hidden Bank to the 475 Knuckle is all reported to have schools of Bluefin roaming around.

Yet another very good zone with plenty of kelps holding Yellowtail and Bluefin
This area has very good volume of fish in it and is the location where the 1day fleet is working.
