Channel Islands
SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE TONIGHT
Weather permitting, here is a good game plan. Hit the Eagles Nest before dawn for a shot at Seabass and then head over to beecher’s bay for some of the good Halibut action.
These Halibut are a solid 15 to 20lb average with a few up around 30-35lbs.
The rest of the region is reported to be slow except for so killer rockfish action.
33 55.90 x 120 00.10 Eagle’s Nest
34 00.20 x 120 00.00 Beecher’s Bay (big area)
Hermosa Beach
No reports of any seabass for 3-4 days now.
The only report of good fishing is for BIG Calico bass along the outside of the King Harbor breakwall.
The bait barge got a fresh load of Anchovy and this made for the Bonito bite to spark back to life.
33.52.09 x 118.25.23 Hermosa Hard Bottom
33.51.22 x 118.24.80 Hermosa Beach Artificial Reef

Catalina Island
Still lots of 10lb class Yellowtail scattered all along the front and around the west end to neary Cat Harbor. WSome days they bite good and other days they don’t.
Live Squid is a must have bait and the best bites are coming with a downhill current.
Barracuda are mixed with these Yellows from Eagle reef and to the west.
Island locals are still coming back in the morning with a Seabass or 2 from the east end, backside spots.
Darrell is still hanging out at Cat Harbor. as of 10am he had about 8 scoops left.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

San Clemente Island
The Cove is close today but will reopen for the weekend.
Yellowtail and a few Seabass are in here and on up the back to the Dunes
The Yellow bite turns on at about 4am and runs until about 6-7am. After that the bite is just a pick.

LA Harbor
Barracuda is by far the best bite going on right now.
Fly lined Anchovies and plastic swimbait are what is working best. They are also biting the Iron but not really good.
Most of this action is out on the Horseshoe with very little action out on the Flats.
Sand bass fishing has not recovered yet. Almost nothing out over the mud flats right now. Normally there would be zillions of them on the flats right now.
The ones that are being caught are on structure spots like Izors and the Gambler wreck.
33.39.87 x 118.13.50 Horseshoe South
33.40.00 x 118.13.34 Horseshoe North

Water is still cold and streaky. A stray Yellowtail here or there but nothing close to being worth the effort
Most guys are by passing the Islands to go paddy hopping out to the west and South.
The 3/4 day guys are focused on good Sand Bass action with a few odd Barracuda and a yellowtail.
These fish are out on the flats in about 90 feet.

Most of the kelps out here are dry but 1 in 20 is still holding Yellowtail and an odd Dorado or 2.
Also a few Marlin have been C&Red in this region since Saturday
33.07 x 117.48 Kelp with Dorado and Yellowtail.
33.14 x 117.39 Yellowtail kelp
Report from Clay on the White Star:
Left Dana around 7am headed to 267. Found no real patties so continued on to the 209.
About 3 miles short at 33.11.74 x 117.52.87 we find a nice patty.
Sent out a dine and within a minute we were hooked up. We end up pulling 4 from the patty and lost just as many.
We called in another boat, he caught 3 and lost just as many as well before the bite slowed.
They were still there when we left but became shy at that point which was about noon.
227/Slide
Warm water bubble here. Good area to look for a marlin.
MEXICO

Schools of Bluefin and some 25lb class yellows are following these. Early morning and then in the afternoon after 2-3pm is the best bite times.
These Bluefin are 15lb models with a good percentage of 35 to 60lb tuna mixed in.
Report from Joshua on the Gettin Grocieries:
Went to the pens out of mission bay made about 80 pieces of squid off crystal pier watched the fireworks at sea world and headed south, Used my new autopilot for the first time. Will never own another boat without one.
Conditions were snotty got to the pens early am. Got 3 BFT and one dodo. Weather picked up and it was 8knts until we got to the nados, brutal on a 21 cc. The pen that produced best for us was the most south west pen long soak was the key. happy to have my first tuna of the year! I’m BEAT!!!!! Hope it helps.

33.18.00 x 117.30.28 Yellowtail Kelp
La Jolla / Point Loma
Slow. There was a giant Yellowtail and Seabass caught yesterday but they were a freak catch.
Mostly it is short Calico Bass and a few Rockfish that are being caught.
Coronado Islands
Still VERY slow. A couple of Yellowtail were caught but overall the only thing biting is rockfish.
OFFSHORE
Today is not a good day to paddy hop. A stiff west wind blowing at 15mph early has the seas white capped and sloppy.
267 / 209
A few guys are out in this area looking for kelps but not having much luck.
Report from Douglas:
Left Dana at noon patty hoping at the 279 and midway to 209 no action.
Headed back found a couple patties on way for nothing, then boom on third patty, as soon as the dine hit the surface my buddy Mike hooks a yellow tail.
Using ultra light calcuta tackle he landed it. I hooked up two more and landed both.
It was around 5 to 6 pm 16 Miles from San Clemente shoreline.

Tuna Pens
31.53 x 117.15 – aproxx 45 miles from Point Loma
Early morning hours are seeing some Bluefin biting. some are 15lb fish while others are 35 to 40lbs.
Some Yellowtail and Dorado are also swimming around these pens
238 / Banda Bank
Lots of Kelp paddie Yellowtail and some Bluefin are scattered all over this general area and south from here to the Lower 500.
This is a huge jag of Tuna and Yellowtail and the stuff continues to bite at a good clip.
A number of boats have popped the 100+ bluefin number.
The Tuna are running from 15 to 75lbs with most being 35 to 40lb fish.
The Yellows are a 10 to 12lb average with some much bigger. There was a couple of 35lb fish caught yesterday on kelps.
Lower 500
Best Blue fin action is down here from 31.12 down to 30.58 x 116.50 to 117.10
This area is about 100 miles from the point.
Report from Rick McElvain on the American Angler:
Went on my annual Rotary Club fishing trip. This year on the American Angler, what a nice boat!
Short version is we circled the lower 500 and caught fish. Here are my notes from the trip:
7/23 Rotary Fishing Trip Started 31.19 x 117.10 boat stopped at 2:30am and drifted.
31.10 x 117.0.7 stop for WFO 57 YT and 2 BFT I got 4 YT passed off one to a little girl on board.
31.03 x 116.59 15 YT 1 Dodo. I caught 1 YT.
31.12 x 117.0.5 6 BFT YT up to 114 now. I caught 2 more.
31.12 x 116.57 plunked style BFT most 50-70lbs. Mine 57lbs. Biggest 67lbs 11 at this stop. Up to 114 YT/19 BFT/2 Mahi at 4:20pm. Moving on.
31.16 x 116.56 finished off boat limits of YT. I stopped after 3 more
31.12 x 116.51 2 more BFT for me fished it 7pm to 8:00pm then done 27 more for he boat.
Final tally Limits of YT. 46 BFT 30-67lbs
40lb test is what everything bit on. I tried 60lb several times for nothing.
The fish we tough fighters and 40lb Flouro was needed. Drag set at about 8lbs would get the job done.
Also, one very experienced fisherman was told before hand to get some 4/0 Gamakatsu circle hooks and that they were great. He had 2 different fish straighten out those hooks on him. He went back to J hooks after that and landed 5 BFT.
This was on the American Angler. For a 1.5 day trip.
Rick McElvain

Yellowtail and Barracuda are the primary targets right now. Most of the Yellowtail are being found on the front side east of Long point.
Spots like Hen Rock, K-20 and Gallagers are all holding 10lb class Yellowtail.
Barracuda on the other hand are mainly up on the western end on the frontside.
Spots like Eagle Reef, Black Rock, Starlight and the west cove all have decent sized schools of Barracuda. Not many yellowtail in these spots right now though.
A few White Seabass continue to show up for the local guys around back on the East End of the Island.
Under the light and Orange rocks are said to be the spots.
Darrell is around at the backside at Cat Harbor with Squid for sale. He made the squid on this same spot.

Report From Pam Sharp:
Seeker Rods proudly sponsored another Catalina Island trip aboard the Gail Force out of LA Harbor Sportfishing on Sunday, July 21. We started out by raffling off a nice 10′ Blue Lightning jig stick. The lady who won it promptly put a reel on it and fished it all day. Unfortunately, none of the yellowtail found the squid at the end of her line, but she vowed to continue to fish the rod!
We had great weather, with very light winds and overcast skies. The spacious sun deck on the Gail Force provided a nice play to chat with fellow anglers and enjoy the ride to the island and back on calm seas. Sundays forecast had called for a possibility of rain, but we only had a few light sprinkles on the way back in.
Once we had set up at the island, wind and current made conditions a bit difficult but Captain Ryan kept looking for the right spot, and we made the best of it.
After hitting 4 different spots without a single bite we found an area holding some yellowtail. We had a steady little bite going, but after about an hour or so the current switch and our bite died. We ended up going through alot of fish to get the fish that we caught, but everyone had a good time and that’s all that matters!
The 21 anglers landed 8 yellowtail, and lost at least that many more of the hard-fighting jacks around the island. The focus was definitely on yellowtail, but there were a few calico bass and sheephead in the counts, as well as a handful of barracuda that wanted to play. Joel cooked up some great breakfast burritos and burgers. And of course there were home made chocolate chip cookies!
Captain Ryan still has a few more mid week dates left for charter in August, as well as a few weekend dates in the fall. And it’s not too early to start thinking about those winter lobster charters!! For information Call Captain Ryan of the Gail Force at 310-844-3814.
San Clemente Island
Yellowtail and a few large Seabass are the fish being caught here right now. Most of the Yellow action in in the cove, while the Seabass are at the Caves and up at the Dunes.
Still plenty of Squid to make bait with in the cove and more can be found near the Dunes.
Always make sure the Island is open before making the run.

Barracuda is the primary target as the Sand bass have not yet recoved from the wind and drop in water temps.
