Channel Islands
Gaviota coast is the location of the current Seabass bite. The Island bite appears now to have died up.
Barracuda showing in this coastal area as well with some good numbers of them being caught.
The Seabass are mostly 30 to 40lb grade and are mixed in with the Cuda.
Catalina Island
I was at Catalina yesterday on the Gail Force, Seeker rods charter. Had Pam Sharp, Dave Hansen, and my little bro Charlie along with me.
We fished the front side of the Island from the East End up to past Goat Harbor.
Conditions were not right! Weak uphill current along with a stiff 10mph Southeast wind made the boat swing all around and off the spot.
We did catch Yellowtail though. we went 8 for 16. Lots of pulled hooks for some reason.
Best signal from the Yellows came at Gallaghers and at Red Bluff. Best bite time was from 9:30 to 1pm. Everything was on LIVE SQUID!!
With out this bait your wasting your time for catching any of these 10lb class Yellowtail.
The Jackpot was Close but Charlie won it with 1 of his 2 Yellowtail. These 2 Yellows were his first ever Yellowtail.
Congrats Charlie! Your now addicted for life.
If you ever get a chance to ride the Gail force you should jump on it. Capt. Ryan and Capt. Joel and Shane will take great care of you!!
Darrell is around on the Back side of the Island near Little Harbor or Cat Harbor
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

Spotty barracuda fishing and slow Sand Bass action is the story right now.

Smokin hot Calico Bass action has returned although most are shorts just under the 14 inch size limits.
Add in a few Barracuda and a few Sand bass to round out the action.
The Yellowtail are being seen at Middle Kelp, San Onofre and Barn. Lucky if you get on of these to bite though.

Very quiet on the Seabass scene now. Still good reports of Squid being found though.
The current moon is nearly full now so if anything is going to happen it will be tonight or tomorrow night.
Lots of Squid is being seen from the North West Corner to Hill street.
Currently the main biters are Calico Bass and Rockfish.

Dana Point
Report from Jim on the Best Pals:
Short report- went out with my dad today out of Dana Point. Caught 4 yellowtail up to 15 lbs between 267 and 209 on one kelp paddy. Saw 4 others throughout day. Hooked a couple more on this paddy and saw some dorado that were not willing to bite. Nice afternoon. Water temps were 66.5-67. A few other boats in area and overall overcast.
Report from Ray on the Short Fill:
left oceanside at o dark thirty. headed out west. found first paddy with bait on it at about 12 miles. second drift got a pick up and one good sized yellow boated. Ran back up and capt. Josh hangs boats one. baited anchovies on 15lb. good fight for sure!!! Found few more paddies up towards dana but no love for rest of the day. cheers! Ray
La Jolla
Report from Jeff on the MissMyMoney:
Decided to fish on Sunday with my brother and nephew. Lazy start after breakfast, around 9:30. Headed to the 182 out of Mission Bay and found great water and a few paddies on the way. Most of the paddies are holding an enormous amount of bait and found yellowtail on them just not hungry. Did find one at 32.41 117.39 that had the right ones and hungry. Picked 6 off of the paddy, smallest weighing in at 19.9# and biggest went 21.9#. Great day watching the kid catch his first Yellowtail. Back in the slip by 4pm. Great day on the water.
Mexico
302
Report from Nick on the striker:
Fished a couple of kelp paddies 3 miles shy of 302. (left from Point Loma) Had limits of yellows for myself and my son by 9 a.m. There were nice quality fish between 10 to 15 pounds. Lost a few to the kelp. Beautiful weather and 68 degree water where we caught the fish. The paddies we found near the 302 seemed to be holding fish. Finished the day at Coronados catching a few rockfish. Found quite a few paddies between 302 and Coronados but none were holding fish. Used your temperature chart to decide where to fish today. Thanks for the great info you provide!

Tuna Pens
The Pens are now at 31.53 x 117.13.
Good bite this morning on a mixed grade of Bluefin from 18 to 60lbs.
Some Yellowtail and Dorado are following the pens too.
Report from Robert on the Road Trip:
Fished down by the pens. Didn’t have much going on this morning, so we went east. Found a pod of dolphin and instantly hooked up. One tuna for the day, but it was 56 pounds!
Report from a friend of Garrett’s:
Heres the down and dirty. Started day 1 at the tuna pens for no love.
Then ran south to the 1040? and went paddy hopping. We boated about 40ish yellowtail (4-8 per paddy and mostly rats with one or two 15+ lbs per paddy) before finding the first school of tuna.
Hooked into my first tuna of the year on my shimano rod / Okuma Andros reel. First long run takes me straight under the middle of the boat. I tried to run the rail and get to the other side without getting hung up and fail. Line gets caught in the prop, can’t get it out and it breaks.
I grab another rod, throw it back out, hook up again and boat my 25lb bluefin. Immediately re-rig and throw out, hook up right away and hand it to my buddy. He goes on to land the jackpot fish of the trip with a 35lb bluefin. It was actually the largest fish of the trip.
Bite died down but we found one more school of football bluefin at the end of the day. I went 1 for two on those.
Woke up the next day at the pens again and had a hot 30 minute morning bite. I went 1 for 2 on 25lb bluefin before it died.
Spent the rest of the time paddy hopping back up the line for better grade yellows. I didn’t get into any of them.
Ended the trip with 65 bluefin from 10-35lbs, 60 yellowtail from 5-30lbs, and 3 Mahi about 10lbs each. I personally ended with 1 yellowtail and 3 bluefin. Buddy got 1 yellowtail and 1 bluefin. All of them were nice size though (thankfully) so we still got a ton of fish.
It was a frustrating trip despite the fish. We got limited on bait and were only given 2 tanks instead of their normal 4. We ran out of bait the first day.
Deckhands couldn’t chum like they should in order to keep the schools around and then towards the end the bait was just trash. We were throwing half dead sardines back out. They would hit the water and roll on their sides or just not swim at all. It was really hard to get bit.
The Producer gave us a tank of bait during the night but it was all trash also. All of the bait was still half dead, beat up noses, losing scales, ect… We ended up running out of bait the second day also.
They were rationing bait so we would pull up to a paddy and have to wait in line until the deckhand dished you out a single fish.
They weren’t keeping the little side tanks stocked with bait so you could just reach in and grab one. By the time you got your bait, the first 5 guys had already thrown in and hooked into all of the fish on the kelp.
The deckhand wouldn’t even be at the tank to start handing out bait until after we had stopped. The deckhands also farmed a lot of fish.
My buddy had two fish lost to their efforts. One guy had three fish lost at gaf because of them. One was being pulled over the rail when the deckhand hit the fish on the rail and ripped the gaff out. Fish fell back into the water and broke the line on the fall. Adios.
So anyway the captain was good, crew was marginal at best, and the bait sucked ass. Fishing was good though.
Weather ended up being awesome. flat and calm. Second day was glass.
All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
If you go fishing please give us a call or shoot us an email.

Gaviota Coast
There are still some nice white seabass being caught in this area as well as some big halibut, too. The white seabass are anywhere from 45 to almost 60 pounds and most of the halibut are well into the 20 pound class. You’ll want to be in 90 feet of water and the squid and fin bait was working.

We received a voicemail report from Joe on the Golden State saying that he was fishing Hen Rock with good yellowtail fishing with fish up to 14 pounds and some barely legal barracuda. He also said that calico bass fishing was all you want.

Capt. Dave Hansen, Yoursaltwaterguide, just gave us an on the water report aboard the Gailforce: We have not found any current on the frontside of the island this morning. We have worked from Red Bluff to the east end for 1 calico bass. 1 yellowtail hooked and lost at Red Bluff. The water temp has changed from 71f to 69f.

More of the same in this area, good calico bass fishing with most of the fish a little short on one side. Most of the kelp beds are holding and should provide a good catch and release trip with few legal fish. Down in the Oceanside area, the boats fishing the twilight hours are doing better on the bigger sand bass on the structure areas.

Michael Baird on the Bank Robber in staying the night on the 209. He left Oceanside with a tank of mixed anchovies and sardines, but when they woke up the boat was surrounded by bait, mostly mini macks. They found a swordfish that they played with for awhile, but couldn’t get it to participate in the party. He said they found some really nice sized kelp paddies for nothing except bait. The tern birds were the key to finding kelps with the weather being up just a bit. They did find one kelp that they got a nice 20 pound yellowtail on. The kelp was located at 33.11.2 x 117.45.5 the further to the west you went the water cooled down a bit. The water temp was anywhere from 69f to 71f.
Tuna Pens
Just got a late report from Rob that started down by the tuna pens: Ran to the pens this am along with 30 or so other boats and fished for about an hour then got bored. Cruised east and found a stringer with two birds sitting on it. Picked up 5 YT at 31.50 x 117.40. Water temp was 67, blue and calm. Headed north and trolled some more for nada. Back to SI by 1:00. I had a scoop in a 50 gallon live well and the bait was poor, really poor.
The bite at the tuna pens has slowed down with the weather coming down. With no wind and hardly any current made for some slack drifts. Hopefully a good tidal movement will get these fish on the same program with everybody else. Along with the blue fin tuna, there have been some yellowtail roaming around the area, as well.
Terry Angel on the Mo Money emailed in this report: Left Friday morning and hit the tuna pens, but only caught 3 tunas 20lb- 38lb. Slept Friday night on board at the 290. Saturday morning headed south and at 90 miles we fount a large paddy. We fished it for three and a half hours and caught 20 yellowtail from 15 to 25 lb. And One blue fin tuna. We Left plenty of fish on the paddy. 31.24X117.22

Weather Alert
Wind made a major dent in all areas yesterday and last night.
Coastal zones had the water roll over and the temps dropped a bunch.
Today trough Monday the wind should back off but we’ll have a chance for showers and Thunderstorms everyday.
Lightning can be VERY dangerous for boats. If you see Lightning in your area DO NOT use your VHF radio. Keying up you mike can attract a lightning strike
Channel Islands
Santa Rosa Island at the Eagles Nest continues to pump out 10 to 15lb Seabass.
Marina Del Rey
Slow overall. Mainly just some rockfish for the daytime fishermen and at Hermosa a few White seabass have been showing nightly. We didn’t get any reports of any caught last night however.
King Harbor has Anchovy for sale and Bonito in the Harbor to chew on them.
All things considered this might be your best bet until conditions straighten out.
Catalina Island
Got a report last night of good white Seabass fishing under the east end light. Some Yellowtail there too.
Yellowtail are scattered all along the front with those standard west end spots working.
Barracuda are scattered all around the Island with the better action on them coming from the frontside of the Island.
Wind is forecast to be down to near nothing tomorrow.
Squid is at Mills Landing and China Point
The Mary Claire is not at the Island but will return on Monday.
San Clemente Island
There are a lot of Yellowtail here and a lot of boats too. The bite isn’t what it was. Its very hit and miss with most only getting just a fish or 2.
Everything is on live Squid. The bite is in the Cove on the Squid grounds. There is enough here to jig up bait.
VERY rough on the backside of the Island and most complained about the rough crossing to get here.
Always make sure the Island is open before making the run.
http://www.scisland.org/schedules/usageGoogle/usageGoogle.php schedule
LA Harbor to Newport Beach
Hit and miss action. Water temps are down and the color isn’t very good either.
The Sand Bass fishing took the biggest hit and now can only be rated as slow
Dana Point to South of Oceanside
5-6 degree drop in coastal water temp has shut down the bite this morning. Not much wind blowing now but it was screaming over night.
There was a few Yellowtail seen at San Onofre early but they didn’t want to bite anything.
La Jolla / Point Loma
Slow this morning. Sloppy seas and cold water are being blamed. Just a bass here and there and some Mackerel.
Lot’s of the guys a turning to the rockfish to put something in the bag.
Imperial Beach / Tj flats
The bass bite on the US side of the border completely died. The only action is coming from several miles beyound the border.
This bass bite isn’t great either but better than any thing else in the area.
Coronado Islands
61 degrees, cold, green and no life.
OFFSHORE
Overall the wind is down now but the seas are still very lumpy.
Bluefin, Dorado and Yellowtail are active this morning in spite of the conditions.
Weather looks to keep improving right on through the weekend.
Dana and Oceanside
Couple of early reports of Yellowtail on kelps and another of a couple of Dorado.
33.17 x 117.42 Dorado seen and a yellow caught on this kelp.
Report from Robbie on the Karen Louise:
Left Oceanside 6:30am with a good clean mix of anchovies sardines from the barge, fresh squid from the market hoping for the best.
Rough green dirty water heading out we selected north west to the temp break area with no paddies visible unless right on it.
Sun viewed itself after 130pm with birds flying. Seen Two dead seals in different locations, one looked like a walrus coming out of the water.
Cleaner water outside the temp break but no life. Boat traffic started around 12pm with only one good paddy for no fish after one farmed, it had lot’s of bait on it so we worked chunk bait, live bait for nearly an hour before getting the bite. Partner was green all day but have to give him props making it as long as we did with nothing to show for our efforts. Heading back out closer to shore tomorrow with hopes of better luck with the inside. Need to think of leaving out of Dana sometimes but Friday’s it was a blessing seeing all the cars lined up as we headed past the View Point. Oh Well, Just another So. California fish shut down.
181
Fairly quiet with not much seen but got a report of 1 big 15lb Bonito caught on a jig strike.
Mexico
302
Got a report of a single kelp with a single Dorado on it.
32.28 x 117.35
Tuna Pens
31.50 x 117.10
Continued fair but steady Bluefin action for most. Afternoons are the best time to be there.
These 2 locations are the target of most guys running down the line today and probably tomorrow as well.
Very good volume of mixed grade tuna around and with better weather this bite might go crazy.
Some Dorado and Yellowtail are cruising around the pens as well.
Just below and inside of the pens is where most guys are finding the best kelp paddy yellowtail.
