Catalina/San Clemente Islands
We got an email report from John about a 2.5 day trip him and some friends did on one of their boats:2½ Day Trip of a Lifetime – Unbelievably Great Weather! Four of us left Dana Point on Wednesday, August 14th, around noon on our twenty-eight foot boat, the Sea-Note. We paddy hopped across the channel to the backside of Catalina for nada results and anchored at Silver Canyon. The next morning, we started out and trolled up to China Point for one, nice 23# YT. Continuing on to the Hole in the Wall spot on San Clemente, we caught one 4 ft. long Mako on the troll. We slow trolled dines in the open area of San Clemente and caught two more YT—13# and 18#. Anchored up for the evening and chummed—but nothing. Heading toward Pyramid Point the next morning, we caught one more nice-sized YT. We proceeded up to China Point—very slow the rest of the morning and early afternoon. We then changed to trolling with various lures. About 4 pm, coming back across Pyramid Cove, we landed and caught the large Yellow Tail that you see in the photo. The smile on my partner’s face is worth a million bucks.
Huntington Beach
There is a little bit of squid up in this area, but it is being a royal pain to try and make. It isn’t floating and jigging it up isn’t much easier. the sand bass bite is pretty good on this stuff, the only problem is it is a later bite. Some guys aren’t getting bit until after 9:00 P.M.

Dana Point
There is a little pocket of cold water right around the Dana Point Harbor and the surrounding area. Any bite that was going on will defintiely be a little on the slow until this waster warms back up. When the water cools down like this make sure you change tactics as the fish are pretty lethargic. Go to lighter line, if using plastics slow down your presentation. There is also some good wind blowing up this way right now, which doesn’t help the water temp at all.
Mission Bay
No more word on the squid or white seabass and yellowtail that bit yesterday morning. Sometimes when these fish bite, people tend to lock jaw, just like the fish, and don’t want to give out that information. The bite happened yesterday morning very early out by Crystal pier for some yellowtail and a single white seabass.
Coronado Islands
We got an email report from Floyd fishing the Coronado Islands: Got to the Coronados at dawn and found lots of meter marks all around the middle grounds. Tried slow trolling and found myself on the lee of south island for three yellows. Two of the fish were on long soaks. One on the slow troll. Last yellow came off a mini mack on a long soak. Back to shelter island at 1:30 pm. Got stopped by customs again in San Diego harbor. I’ve been stopped every time coming back from the islands this year. Weather was flat calm going out and very choppy/sloppy coming back. Floyd

Had an email report from Chris in this area: Fished the 312,209,279/267 out of Dana. I stopped on a dozen or more paddies in 68 to 70 degree water. Warmest at the 312. Saw a marlin greyhounding across the 209 and a whale. Like everyone else has said theres lots of bait on the paddy’s. no fish for us today maybe next time.
Mexico
This email report came in from James: Fished on the Prowler yesterday. I assume we were down in the lower 500 range but couldn’t get a straight answer all day. 90-105 miles from the point and pretty close to land. The boat got 83 yellowtail and 1 dorado. No sign of bluefin all day. Last trip they caught bluefin by accident. On paddies, there was no action and little life. We hopped around all day – the fish are all 10lbish. Wind picked up and we caught very few after 11am. Afternoon was 4-5ft with 20mph wind. It got bumpy. It was an okay trip, I caught 7 and lost 3 but really got pounded. It reminds me why I would never want to work on a boat!

There is a temperature break just to the north of the high spot that looks promising for this area as there have been a few fish taken off a kelp paddy here and kelp paddy there. There are not a lot of kelps holding fish in this area right now, but you might find the lucky that is and have a good day.
209
There is some warm water that is in this area, as well. Another spot to take a look at if you are in the N. San Diego county or OC area. Once again, find the right kelp and it could really pay off.
181/182 Ridgeline
The water is definitely warmer on the north end of the ridge, but it seems that the fish that are being taken in this zone are on the south end of the ridge. There have been a couple kelps with a mix of dorado and yellowtail in the area. Not everyone of them is holding, just the magic one!
Mexico

This area seems to be doing the best for local fish with a few mixed fish being taken on the kelp paddies. Most of them are holding a few yellowtail and the occasional dorado, but don’t be surprised to find the bluefin schooling around just away from the kelp. Also, if you happen to see a tern bird or two diving into the water, that is a really good sign that they are on the fish. If you find these birds, get in front of them and throw some bait. That is the preferred method of fishing these fish.
We got this email from FD member Mike on the Tuna Taxy: Fished below and outside the 371 to the 390 on Sunday. Started the day on a medium paddy that produced two pig yellowtail. Continued south to the numbers from FD Saturday night and encountered several large paddies that produced another five or six yellowtail in the 8-12 lb range. Back up the line 5 or 6 miles below the 371 the water cooled by a degree and we found fast moving bluefin under the tern birds. Caught one on bait while chasing the terns. Saw boils and meter marks before chunking and thowing bait at the fast moving birds and fish. Caught a secound bluefin on the troll (broom tail zuchinni). Weather was snotty from early on, but laid down a little for our trip home.
238/385
There have been a few kelps down in this area that are holding yellowtail and dorado. If you haven’t guessed it, you have to find the right one. There have been bluefin in the area, as well. Just on the north side of the 385 is a temperature break that seems to be holding all of the good kelps in the area. This has been the go to area for a few days now.
1140 Finger/Lower 500
This area has been an area of interest, but the water has dropped a couple of degrees and has gotten a little dirty. As we know, that doesn’t make for favorable conditions for this type of fishing. Conditions change from day to day, so this water could be clean and warm by tomorrow afternoon.
