Gaviota
Seabass are still showing. They are on Squid Beds and also being found under birds during the day.
The fish are in the 20 to 40lb class. This isn’t wide open fishing however. You will have to work and hunt them down.
Fish where there is an uphill current.
Dropper loop and 1/4oz sliding sinker are both working.
There are some halibut mixed in as well.

SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 3 PM PDT THIS AFTERNOON

If the weather allows it there are still some good Halibut action at Rodes reef and some schoolie Seabass biting in Beechers bay in the very early morning.

Same old story. Stay east of long Point if you want a yellowtail. Hen Rock, K-20, Gallagher’s, and under the light spots are all holding a mixed grade of Yellowtail.
This bite isn’t all that great however and you’ll have to work for them if your going to catch any. You’ll also need to have Live Squid AND some Current. With out both of these your chances are slim to none at all.

If your looking for a Yellowtail, try looking alongf the front at the White Rock and Purse Siene Rock areas.
A number of 25lb class Yellows have been caught on both Live Squid and on the surface Iron. A mint colored tady 45 scored several yellows this size yesterday afternoon.
Word has it the Cove is still dead slow with no Yellowtail and NO Squid.

Water temp 65 with fog in the AM.
Bounce balling for Halibut is on the slow side this morning but the lizardfish are wide open.
Brandon on the NoZilla is having a field day sacking up millions of Lizards. 😉
While Brandon is whacking away at those tasty Lizards his boy FKG schooled him with a nice 20.2lb Halibut
LA Harbor
Squid is still at Izors and the Sand bass are on it during the night.
This is the best option right now unless you want Rockfish. Those are biting decent at almost all the 250ft. and deeper spots all around the Horseshoe
There is also a possible shot at a Barracuda but mostly this action is really slow.
No Yellowtail seen on the ‘Shoe in many weeks now.

Water is clearing and warming. So far the bass have been slow to respond to the better conditions. The best action is still on rockfish at Box Canyon.

Report from Dustin on the Miss Madi:
Just made a quick run out of MB this morning out towards the 182, stayed between the 182 and mexican border and trolled around for 2 hours. Didn’t see much of anything at all. No paddies, water temp looked good at 69.5 about 10 miles outside of MB and then it dropped to 65.5 and then closer to the 182 out 23 miles from MB it was 66-67. Wind was up and the swells were stacked like boat wakes coming from the west.

South 9 Mile Bank
Report from Richard on the Gottafloat:
Left late from Shelter Island (9:30), got 1/2 scoop of nice sardines at the bait receiver and headed to the South 9 Mile Bank. Lots and lots of dolphin and birds. Found a few paddies with nothing on them, metered nothing as well. One of the flattest days I’ve seen. Water temp 67.3 most everywhere. All in all nice boat ride!

Report from Garrett:
** This report is from fishing on Thursday**
Cleared MB by 4:30am with a scoop of healthy 6-8″ sardines. Awesome weather. FYI for the night travelers, we had a large whale nearly take us out a few miles west of N. island in the dark.
Ended up just west of the 371 at dawn, somewhat crowded with several boats around and plenty of people on the radio.
Trolled around and found a line of paddies running on a 170-180 degree heading. Worked the 117.40 line south hitting several paddies.
We went 0 for 9 before we found a paddy holding micro dodo’s. They were 2-3 pounds and only interested in the idle of the OB.
After some photo ops Brett on Swell Chaser saved our ass and called us into a paddy with 6-8lb YT at 32.08/117.49.
It was a 10 mile run, but the weather was great so we pulled the spread and hauled over there at 25 knots.
The YT tended to hold tight to the kelp and we managed to only pick off 1-3 on every drift despite them invading our chunk and chum they’d devour and then head back to the paddy.
Probably could have gotten limits for the three of us, but we kept 7-8 released a few of the smaller ones and decided to go looking again.
Brett saved us again, called us into another paddy at 32.10/117.48 for a few more yellows about the same size.
From there we worked NE towards the islands.
Around 2:30pm we picked up the trollers and ran at 25 knots to the middle grounds, stopping on a few more dry paddies.
All these were inside of 117.30 and were holding mini macks and lots of other small fry.
Out west we found very little bait under/around the paddies. Got to the middle grounds around 3:30pm.
Tern birds just outside the high spot off white rock were on something. As we slid up the birds started to climb and whatever it was the party seemed to be over.
Slow trolled through the middle grounds for about 30 minutes before a seal got on us and we headed home.
Great weather, less than 10 knots wind all day, grease calm until about 11am. Sun was out by 10am, just a beautiful day.
All in all we went 2 for 17 on paddies holding. I swear I can fish offshore, but we actually never found our own fish.
Without Brett on the swell chaser we may have blanked for the day.
THANKS AGAIN BRETT. WE OWE YOU A BEER.
Most interesting news was the dope Breakaway gave me. He said he had three on board playing with some finicky BFT he found at 31.58/117.33 down to 31.54/117.27.
The pic is a double on those smaller YT. Notice how terrible the conditions are, surprised they didn’t issue a small craft advisory.

Very slow fishing near the pens yesterday and again this morning.

The Ensenada 6 pack boats are working this area and finding good numbers of 20lb class Yellowtail and a few Dorado. Not much in the way of any Tuna however.
Be sure to check out the SST shot. It shows a very strong temp break running east to west and the Yellows and Kelps are piled up on the southern edge.

31.40 x 117.04
437
Scott McDaniel’s on the Sea Adventure 80 reported in from fishing this area today with a good snap on the kelp paddy yellowtail and a good afternoon bite on some large Bluefin. They had 10 on the boat in the 70 to 80lb class with 2 hangingf and lots more tuna around the boat.
They were 80 miles from the dock on a return course of 35 degree’s.
That places them down around the 437 spot.
Try looking at a 5 mile block around 31.31 x 118.08
155 miles / Tuna Hole
The bite at 30.14 x 116.40 dried up as fast as it started. Most of the boats in this area are moving off looking for something else.
Just a few kelps with rat Yellowtail found today.

Gaviota
Squid nest white sea bass have been caught off Gaviota. Light boats an seiners are the dead giveaway to the spots. 8 miles of coast to pick a spot from. 20-40lb fish.
Fish where there is an uphill current.
Dropper loop and 1/4oz sliding sinker are both working.
There are some halibut mixed in as well.
Channel Islands
Rockfish is the name of the game for the local head boats. They are starting out at the La Janelle and fishing for sand bass then moving on to the gap. Nothing too exciting.
Calico bass are on the chew around the yellowbanks kelp line.
Halibut are stacked up at Rhodes Reef. Good counts coming from that area using live squid.
A few white sea bass still around at Becher’s on live squid. Squid can be made at Scorpion outside of the closure.
Bait
San Pedro Bait has live squid and anchovies.
Nachos has live squid and anchovies.
Long Beach Bait has live squid.
Newport has live squid.
Oceanside has sardines and anchovies.
Mission Bay has sardines.
San Diego has sardines.
Catalina Island
Squid can be made at the Isthmus in 150 feet of water. Look for the light boats as they were working in there last night.
Oceanside
Boat Name: Fo Reel
Fishing Report: Hey guys! Fished out of Oceanside Thursday, got some really nice anchovy from the receiver and headed south. Fished the Buccaneer pipe for a few quick drifts for nada then headed to the kelp off Teramar for a steady bite all day. Mostly short barracuda (a few Just an inch short) and calico. Also got a few sand bass and a whitefish on a gulp jerkshad. The better sized fish were coming on flylined anchovy on straight braid tossed into the kelp then horsed out. Nice flat conditions all day Water temp was 68 at the pipe and kelp and water was more green at the kelp than the pipe.
Offshore
Our airplane has been up all week looking at dead water all over from Catalina down the 181-182, 9 mile bank, 289, 267, 209, 43, etc.
He has not seen anything worth running for in US waters North of the line.
Marlin Dope
This week we have seen a lot more signal of marlin showing up in to the So. Cal Bight.
Today Captain Jimmy Decker leadered a marlin outside the 289 at 32.55 x 118.09 around 10am. Pink and white jig. “Goatfish”
Another boat in the area with Jimmy released a marlin as well.
Today the airplane found double marlin at 32.53.45 x 118.17.72 and another pair at 32.54 x 118.19. Inside the 289 towards the head.
On Monday our plane saw a ton of tailers while spotting swordfish between the 289 and the Mackerel Bank. More than one yacht fishing the area had a fish in the jigs. 32.58 x 118.17
Captain Pete Groesbeck reported in after running from San Diego to the ridge. He washed jigs in OK looking water for a couple hours for not. He didn’t see anything between the ridge and Catalina worth stopping and working in the afternoon hours.
There was a single marlin caught on a black and green jig at the 267 early in the week.
Captain Dave Hansen hooked a marlin with a blue and white jig at the 390 on Wednesday. Dave also had one come up on a mean joe green at the 209 on his way back to Newport the same day.
Captain Ali Hussainy baited a marlin on a kelp at the 371 on Monday and more were seen on Thursday.
Besides running tuna clones throw a marlin jig down the center behind the smaller jigs while trolling around. With all the big tuna around it will easily catch tuna just as well as a marlin.
Middle of no where inside the Ridge
Airplane found a total of 3 yellowtail on kelps.
32.40 x 117.37 two yellowtail
32.59 x 117.43 one yellowtail
32.28 x 117.29 Huge loaded kelp
The 43
Reported dead, a few lock jaw yellowtail reported on one out of a ton of kelps.
Update 4:30PM: The plane took a hard look at the 43 today. Not a single fish seen, empty kelps. Looks good just not holding.
439
Very close to home (15 mile from Point Loma) just outside the South 9 Mile Bank Kris aboard The Grim Reefer found a couple kelps holding yellowtail.
Headed out of Mission Bay at 5am. Started to make our way down towards the Hidden Bank. Stopped on kelp at 32.25.405 x 117.23.236 landed 2 yellows lost one Stopped on Kelp 32.24.429 x 117.23.658 1 yellow.
425 and hidden had heavy boat pressure and mostly empty kelp. the radio was flooded with boats finding nothing. a few found 20-25# yellows. ours were 6 pound rats.
425
We left the Sheraton Hotel Marina at 3:30AM, secured our full scoop of large Sardines & a few Mackerel then headed straight to the 425. First Kelp was sighted at 6:30AM and it was our ONLY Kelp that would go for our day. I was with two good friends and had a great time as they first brought in a 6# (Ok, but I’ll still eat it), then a 10# model and finally a nice 20 pounder, but he sure was a thin one.
So with some pressure off of us with 3 for 3, we trolled for nada and stopped on 5 more Paddies as we traveled 15 miles South from our first stop of the day with nobody home at all following Paddies plus the water went from 67 to 66, cooling on the way down. Not sure how critical that was, however we were thankful for what was chilling under our ice.
We headed back to the Islands later in the morning for a mix of Sculpin & some Lingcod & called it a day which always whiz right by when you are on the water. The weather was great, company super & the PBR’s the best…Now it’s time to grill some YT with a Porcini Mushroom Cream Sauce/Rice & Green Beans. I’ll post the recipe this week as that’s what I am hankering for at this moment & the Porcini’s are simmering in some Heavy Cream with Garlic & browned Onions…… -Stevo
I was in the area about 5-10 miles south/southwest of the 425 (32.8 117.24) yesterday (8/15) too, and I had decent luck. I think one of the keys was that I made bait at one of the kelps that I found on the way down which was holding a school of medium/small sized mackerel. I wanted them for extra insurance. Well, I only had one or two short-strikes all day using the large sardines from the SD bait barge, but I landed one 12lb Dorado and one 15lb YT, and two 5-7lb YT using those smaller macs fly lined. The YT were boiling at two kelps that I came across, but even with that, it was tough to get them to take a bait. I think switching to a smaller hook (#1) helped, and I’m sure using macs was the ticket. The water was so calm and clear you could easily see the YT and Dorado schooling around the kelps and the boat. Fun day! ~ Marcus fishing solo on his 20ft Triumph
371
The airplane took a look over the San Salvador Knoll and across the 371.
He did not see any fish on kelps at the San Salvador but said the 371 is loaded with boat and kelps. He saw very little in sign of fish, probably because the boats had the fish down on the kelps.
The area of 32.11 x 117.28 is loaded with kelps all the way down to 32.09 x 117.29.
VHF communications between private skiffs confirmed that there are yellowtail on the kelps as well.
390
Reports of good kelp fishing at the 390 for those that want to get outside of the fleet.
Captain Dave Hansen had a marlin and yellowtail off a kelp earlier in the week right on top of the 390. The 390 is located at 32.04 x 117.50
Upper Hidden Bank
Boat Name: Aqua Scout
Fishing Report: Dana Point… 5-6 stops on kelp full of bait headed directly to 182, ~6 more kelp in the area that held dines and small mac that we picked up for more bait… nothing until we found 72 water ~10 miles west of 425 bank… 85 miles from Dana Point. It was only when the bait on the kelp was tiny that we got hit by Dodo on 8″ dines, nothing hit our mackerel both mini 5″ and large 12″. Farm 4, landed 5 and left the rest for the next guy. 32.02.629 117.28.887 good luck
60 Mile Bank
The Thunderbird out of Davey’s Locker found great kelp fishing near the 60 mile bank. They turned in 98 dorado, 84 yellowtail and 2 Bluefin. The Amigo fishing near them scored 35 Bluefin.
The Bluefin were caught later in the day around 1:30-2pm.
Boats working between the 60 mile bank and the Stem of the Mushroom this morning had limit style yellowtail fishing along with dorado. Lots of lock jaw dorado that would only bite a slow trolled sardine.
Lots of kelps around:
32.08 x 118.03
32.08 x 118.05
32.08 x 118.07
32.06 x 118.11
32.03 x 118.22
32.02 x 118.23
32.00 x 118.23
Get below this break for your best chance at dorado, yellowtail and Bluefin tuna. A few yellowfin Bluefin were also caught yesterday on dolphin in the area.
The Mushroom Bank and West to the Worm Bank
The overnight and 1.5 day boats out of San Diego are fishing an area between the top of the Mushroom Bank and the Worm Bank. Between 90 and 95 miles from San Diego.
The weather is beautiful offshore and the Bluefin are biting.
The fleet is spread out and everyone is seeing big schools to play with.
Most are sonar fish chummed up.
Numbers passed to us this afternoon.
32.00.462 x 118.56.401 Sonar Fish
31.58.301 x 118.54.625 Puddlers
32.00.102 x 118.53.672 Sonar Fish

295
Louie of the It’s 4 Reels and Tequila’s sports club reported in about yesterdays trip.
We purchased a nice scoop of anchovies from Chilly Willy at the Marina Coral receiver and also made spanish macks in front of Punta Banda with the intent of fishing the 295 area.
Most of the fish we found were 5-10 miles from the 295, 31.38/117.13 to 31.37/117.18.
Water temps were 69-71 degrees and the seas were the calmest we have had offshore all year.
We found one paddy holding a few dorado and we went 1 for 3 on them.
The rest of the day we looked for paddies and found some holding and some that were empty.
We finished the day with 8 yellows to 25lbs. and 1 nice dorado.
Also heard some radio chatter with good fishing inside the 238 and the ridge that runs inside of that area. Metered what looked like tuna under a massive pod of dolphin but did not have any take the jigs or bait.
Bait situation for now is good for decent sized anchovies in the Marina Coral receiver and Ensenada Harbor.
Tuna Hole
The long range boats are working schools of Bluefin 155 miles South of San Diego, 40 miles out of San Quintin.

Seabass are being found under bird schools again. Most of these fish are in the 25 to 35lb class and are not your typical Channel Islands 15lb models.
The Seabass are working over balled up schools of Anchovy. There are also a few Barracuda mixed in with the Seabass.
This are is about 25 miles up the beach from Santa Barbara.

SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE TONIGHT
Better weather has brought the guys back out to fish the halibut and schoolie Seabass at Beechers Bay. The fish are biting but not the wild bite of a few weeks ago.
Some of this action is also being found at Rodes Reef.

Hermosa beach is working again. A few Seabass and a couple of big Halibut were caught overnight on the Squid Beds.
The rest of the bay remains quiet, except for the Bonito inside of King Harbor on flylined Anchovy’s and the guys on the wall are getting them with fly and buble combo.
Best action happens when the bait boat comes in with a fresh load of Anchovy.

No change here either. All the action is on the eastern half of the Island. Hen Rock, K-20, and under the light spots are probably your best shot at a Yellowtail.
You need 2 things. Live Squid and Current. Without both of these the fishing is very slow, except for Calico bass which are showing good in tight to stucture.

14 mile bank /267/209/277/312
Unchanged…… Mostly slow kelp paddy fishing but everyday somebody finds a nugget with Yellowtail and Dorado on it.
181 / 182 Ridge
Scattered kelps holding some Dorado and Yellowtail. Most are dry kelps however. You might look at 15 of them for nothing before you find a good one.
Little better signal from Dorado today but most of them are having lock jaw.
43 Fathom Spot
Squid and Squid boats are on the anchor out on the bank.
Now here is the interesting part……Over the past few days the guys have been seening small numbers of Bluefin on the sonar and also a few jumpers.
Then last night they got flashed by a very large school of Dorado. So many of them they had lots of trouble catching the squid.
Probably a good chance they will hang around in the area for more squid.
If your thinking about running out here, try hard to get some squid before you go!
Also try dragging pink and white jigs. Dorado often bite these when they are keyed up on Squid.

Mackerel Bank
Couple of Marlin spotted at 32.58 x 118.17
Cortez Bank
The Bank had Bluefin and Yellowtail on it but the bite slowed to a crawl and now most if not all the boats have gone elsewhere to look for fish.
If you do run out here BRING SQUID!! Both the Bluefin and the Yellowtail are keyed up on it and not biting anything else.
32.26.25 x 119.07.50 Cortez bank
60 Mile Bank
Good numbers of Kelp paddy Yellowtail being found out here along with a few Bluefin. This is the zone that the LA/OC boats are making thier scores.
The actual area is just inside and a little to the north almost right on top of the Mex/US border.
Look around a 5 to 10 mile block centered at 32.08 x 118.07
Mushroom Bank
Bluefin are showing in good numbers just to the Southwest of the Mushroom. Take a look around a 5 to 10 mile block centered at 31.59 x 118.40.
This stuff appears be on a slow march up to the NNW at about 1 to 2 miles a day.
Airplane (mex) to the Dumper
This dope is several days old but our sources continue to say its good.
The Bluefin in this area are almost all coming on sonar marks with only the rare jig fish.
They are deep, holding at around 100 feet so a good sized sinker is working best to get bit.
This is extremely hit and miss fishing. Some boats are scoring while others are not seeing much of anything.
Look in a block from 31.49 to 31.39 x 118.13 to 118.25
Very few kelps in this zone and not many, if any yellowtail or Dorado on them if you find one.
MEXICO
425 to the Upper Hidden Bank
This area is your best shot for kelp paddy yellowtail right now.
Not every kelp is holding but enough are to make it worth the run.
Don’t be surprised if you see the San Diego 3/4 day fleet working this area.
Most of the better kelps continue to be found around a block centered at 32.10 x 117.24.
Then from this block the Yellows continue to be found on kelps all the way down to the Upper 500.
Report from James on his 23ft Sea Swirl:
We headed down to the 425 on the way stopped at at least 8 or so of kelps with a good amount of bait underneath them but nobody home water averaged between 67 and 69° better luck next time
Report from Kris on the Grim Reefer:
Left Mission Bay at 5am and headed for the 425. Saw a few nice kelps holding bait on the way down but couldnt get bit. Finally found a kelp at 32.10.12 x 117.29.48 It produced one yellowtail, only 6 pounds. nearby we spotted another holding a small school of rat dorados, but couldnt get them to bite. We found the mother school of dorado right around 32.12.480 x 117.40.360 HUNDREDS of dorado foaming. small rats and some bigger ones up to 25 pounds. a couple boats were there. no one could get bit. they were chasing small baits and ignored everything else.
371
Good numbers of Dorado showing on a kelp at 32.13 x 117.29
Several boats on this one and they are all heading for limits.
A few yellowtail are on it to but most of the fish are dorado.
Tuna Pens
The pens have moved out to the west a few miles and are now at 31.48 x 117.18
Water temp reported to be 68.4 but no much action happening at them. Perhaps after they become more stable in 1 spot things will perkup.
