We got this email from FD member Mike on the Tuna Taxy: Fished below and outside the 371 to the 390 on Sunday. Started the day on a medium paddy that produced two pig yellowtail. Continued south to the numbers from FD Saturday night and encountered several large paddies that produced another five or six yellowtail in the 8-12 lb range. Back up the line 5 or 6 miles below the 371 the water cooled by a degree and we found fast moving bluefin under the tern birds. Caught one on bait while chasing the terns. Saw boils and meter marks before chunking and thowing bait at the fast moving birds and fish. Caught a secound bluefin on the troll (broom tail zuchinni). Weather was snotty from early on, but laid down a little for our trip home.

Report from Jonathan on the AnotherDay:
Long week of fishing the SMB squid grounds…Fished Mon., Fri., and Sat. last week on squid grounds from around 4.30 am to 8 am seeing if a few whites where still lingering around. The bat rays were limit style Uhggg… and occasionally a few decent marks would build up but never the right kind bit. squid floated easily every night and dip netted until the well was plugged…water temps between 68 -69 75-90 ft. Sat. finally got bit on a flylined squid that didn’t have the usual bat ray thump nice 28lb hali casme way off the bottom…figured i better put the live squish to good use and my son wanted to catch a hali so ran in picked up my 22 month old daughter and 4 year old soon and ran to twin towers area and my son caught his first legal flat fish was 25.5 inches… to say the least he was totally stoked…and made it to his soccer practice at 12 so mom was happy.
Catalina Island
As has been the story for quite some time now, the eastern half of the Island is where you want to look.
Calico Bass are biting good as long as you have Live Squid and there is current. Some Yellowtail continue to show everyday on these same spots.
Pick up Squid at the bait receivers at San Pedro, Long Beach and in Newport.
Up along the western end of the Island lots of junk is biting, aka Sheephead, Blue Perch, Opaleye, rockfish etc……
No Yellows and not many Calico Bass

Some Squid has now moved back into the cove and Yellowtail came in along with them.
Nothing wide open but you do have a shot in the morning before 7am.
After that run up the front to the Purse Seine Rock and up to Gold Bluff for the Yellowtail.

Coronado Islands
Report from Rob on the Fletch
Hi guys, spent a half day fishing the Coronados with Dart and my cousin Scotty on Sunday morning. Bait from EB was a great mix of about 30% chovie 65% large healthy dines and 5% greenbacks. Started in the Middle Grounds around 6, lots and lots of dolphin and sea lions working big balls of bait in the area. Birds all over the place mostly working the mammals. Slow trolling dines through the middle grounds, following meter marks of bait worked pretty well for us. We ended up with 4 YT, 3 being 25-30+ lbs. and one 10-12 lbs. 3 YT on slow trolled dines, one 25# fish inhaled the mint/white candy bar I was throwing to get a feel of my new 10′ SS Ulua while we were trolling. That was fun. Look for the bait balls and troll around them. The only times we got bit there was tonnage of bait under us. Saw a tern pick one up pretty close, looked like 4″ eel-like bait, maybe lizard fish? Water was 67-68 in the zone and deep blue with 40’+ visibility. Weather was nice. Great trip and back at the dock by 11:30

Off Box Canyon
Report from Chuck (finseeker)
Pulled a dorado and yt off a med sized paddie 4 miles off box canyon (broke off another dodo on 15lb and pulled hook on another small yt). blue 69 degree water. Heard alot of guys on the outside not finding anything. Our target species was not the dorado or yt. If you look at the SST’s (however poor the shots) it is evident that the warmer water is well on the inside for the coastal fish…why does everyone think farther is better (same thing last season)
277 / 209 / Mackerel Bank
A drop in water temp from around 70 to 65-66 has put the skids on kelp paddie and Marlin action.
Some good stable weather this week might turn things around

The Bluefin are still on the Bank. Many of them are mixed in with tonnage of 5-6lb Bonito.
Anchovys are getting a few but the bonito are being a pest with that bait.
The Bluefin want the Live Squid the most and the bonito ignore it.
Some Yellowtail too with the live Squid. Without the Squid you might not even see a Yellowtail.
Also biting are GIANT 10lb Whitefish, Salmon Groupers and Sheephead.

371 / 390
Report from Michael on the Tuna TAXI:
Fished below and outside the 371 to the 390 on Sunday. Started the day on a medium patty that produced two pig yellowtail. Continued south to the numbers from FD Saturday night and encountered several large patties that produced another five or six yellowtail in the 8-12 lb range. Back up the line 5 or 6 miles below the 371 the water cooled by a degree and we found fast moving bluefin under the tern birds. Caught one on bait while chasing the terns. Weather was snotty from early on, but laid down a little for our trip home.
Report from Steve on the Defiance Yellowtail:
Left SD bay early Sunday Morning. Excellent half scoop of mixed chovie and dines. Went to a spot between the 425 and the 371. Water was nice and calm; Wind was 0-6 all morning. I found a number of paddies, but only one with eager participants. I started in the area where most of the other bites southwest of the 425 had been and went ENE. I trolled along and found the right one by seeing birds to their fish dance. Headed over to them, found a nice paddy, go a visit from some Dodos and had a yellow on right away about 50 yards from it. Fish were maybe 8#, so I went to the curado 300 and had fun with them. Dodos were jumping and teasing, but wouldn’t play (even tried to chunk them). Dines worked much better than the chovie to my surprise.
Tuna Pens
Last report has the pens at 31.45 x 117.18
Very slow fishing near the pens for a number of days now.
water temp 64 and the water is dirty.
temp break a few mile north has some kelp paddies with 8lb yellowtail on them.
238 / 295
Good numbers of kelps and many of them are holding Yellowtail and Dorado.
Not much signal of Bluefin right now.
1140 Finger and Lower 500
Same story as the 238/295. Good Kelp paddy yellowtail and dorado.
much better shot at Bluefin Tuna too. Word is coming in that the bite down this way is pretty good today with good numbers of Bluefin biting.
Take a look down the finger at 31.10 x 117.05.

SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 AM PDT THIS MORNING
If the weather allows, and it looks like it will over the next few days, there is still some good Halibut action at Rodes reef and some schoolie Seabass biting in Beechers bay in the very early morning.

Nothing has changed best shot for a Yellowtail is from long point east.
Hen Rock, K-20, Gallagher’s, and under the light spots are all holding a mixed grade of Yellowtail.
This bite isn’t all that great however and you’ll have to work for them if your going to catch any. You’ll also need to have Live Squid AND some Current. With out both of these your chances are slim to none at all.

Report from Clyde:
Fished Catalina yesterday at the east end in front of the blue tanks. No current when we showed up in the morning but we decided to hang for a little while and wait for conditions to improve. Uphill current showed up around 10am and combined with our chumline, we started getting all you want calicos with about half being over legal size. We were in 65′ of water and I did see 2 nice #25 range yellows swim right by the boat. Of course I was busy releasing a calico at the time so I didn’t have a bait in the water. Current slowed around 1 and we headed back. Also on our way out saw a nice patty with nothing on it. Water at the island was 68.5. We caught and released 40+ calicos and one small sheephead.

Sand bass on the Squid Beds from Izors to Queens Gate is by far the best surface action available.
You might also see a Barracuda around Izors but the better chance for one or 2 of them is on the Horseshoe and on the 150.
Rockfish action is very good on the 150 and just outside on the sand the sand dabs are beginning to build back up again.

Calico Bass are being slow to return to the bite in spite of better water conditions.
The first Yellowtail in weeks was caught yesterday and San onofre, so maybe these fish will come back to life around here.
Right now the best bite continues to be for Rockfish and those little stones off Box Canyon are kicking out the Salmon Groupers and Chuckleheads.

The Slide
Yesterday there was Very clean and warm water up to 70 degree’s. At least 1 Marlin was found in the area in the early afternoon.
Lot’s of Bait, and birds working the zone.
Today however it appears much of this is gone. The wind has dropped the water temp down to 67-68 and much of the life signs have disappeared.

Marlin seen and hooked in these to areas. Condition much like at the slide.
Not a lots of kelps right now and most of those are not holding but 1 in 20 is with a couple of Dorado and-or Yellowtail on them.
Reports coming in at midday say the area has gone quiet. Water dropped to 66 from 70 yesterday. All the signal of Bait and birds are now gone.

This remains a decent area for yellowtail and Dorado. The Newport Sportboat fleet has been coming out into this general area and doing well.
The area being worked in just to the inside and just below the East Butterfly

Lots of focus has been placed on this area. Much of the 1 day fleet is running around here. Bluefin are on the stem of the Mushroom and just to the west.

Not fished lately. Weather wasn’t nice out here either.
Lots of 5-6lb Bonito are living on the Bank right now and they have some 10 to 15lb Bluefin hanging with them.
The Bluefin want the LIVE SQUID. A few of them are biting on the Anchovy if you can get past the Bonito.
Yellowtail are also on the Bank right now. They are running from 10lb models up to 35lbs or so.
LIVE Squid is the only bait working on these fish.
Also biting are GIANT 10lb Whitefish, Salmon Groupers and Sheephead.

371
From this point and on down and out towards the 390 you can find kelps with Dorado on them. These Dorado are stuffed full of 1 inch baitfish and are very tough to get to bite.
Report from Shad Catarius on the Marie Ann:
Headed out with a tank full of squid, paddy on the 371 gave up 1 19 lb YT, after many dry paddys, full of bait, found boiling BFT at. N 32 22. W 117 34, scored one 24 lb BFT on a trolled green/black micro jet. Water 68-70, light wind, big south west swell. Good Times!
390 and west
Weather was bad in this area yesterday with wind up to about 20mph.
Still some Bluefin and Kelp paddy Yellowtail were found and caught.
So far this morning reports are hard to come by as it sounds like there are not many private boaters on the water.
Look around a 5 mile box centered at 32.06 x 117.50
Report from Rene on the Reel Vibe:
Left SI @ 1 am on 8/17 and set course for the 60 mile back and beyond with my homeboy Matt. Smooth flat seas for the first 35 miles out that detierated soon after. With wind building decided to run over to the 371 instead of continuing out west. Began looking for paddies @ first light. All were dry in the area so decided shoot over to the 390. Water was 67.5 and the best looking water we seen so far. Found a paddy near the high spot and began boating all you wanted 8-12# yellows. Took 7 and left them biting. Heard of a single jig strike for one bluefin in the area so got the jigs out and began trolling the area. Weather seemed to be getting worse by the hour. Decided to troll out of the area heading north east. Spoke to a guy on the radio about a jig strike for a sinhle bft between the 390 & the 425 (thanks for the numbers radio guy). We were heading in tha t direction already due due to the weather. About 7 miles south west of the 425 found a spot of terns working. As we took a closer look we see 25# bft breaking the surface. Got in front of the fast moving terns, launched two full nets of bait, launched a dean in the middle of the terns (all in like 6 seconds) and my bait was instantly inhaled. Boated a 20-25# bft shortly after (good to know schools of bft are this close to home) Tried to locate the school again with zero luck. water temp was 67.7 FYI these were fast moving schools & run a gun style fishing. No bueno in this type of weather. Wind seemed to have picked up another 7 knots right after and by now seemed to blowing 20 knots and foul. Boat total 7 yellows and 1 bft.
Upper hidden bank
Report from Harold on the Hystix:
Left SI at 4:30 with the plan of paddy hopping our way down towards the pens. Traveling south in the morning wasn’t too bad and once we got below the 425 we started checking kelps. water temp ranged from 67 to 67.6 in the morning. Found some great looking kelps with terns all over them, but only mini-macs. Worked our way all the way down to pens and found 64 degree water. They are sitting on the cold side of a temp break from 66 to 64.4. Trolled though and high tailed it. By this time the wind and waves were up and we got our asses handed to us. Got back to the Upper Hidden zone 32.00/117.21 where we were in the morning and found the terns now had some (not many) tuna under them. Only managed one small BFT and a YT. Heard of some radio fish on the 390 under the birds..
Tuna Pens
31.45 x 117.18
Very slow fishing near the pens yesterday and again this morning.
water temp 64 and the water is dirty.
238 / 295
Good numbers of kelps and many of them are holding Yellowtail and Dorado.
Not much signal of Bluefin right now.
1140 Finger and Lower 500
Same story as the 238/295. Good Kelp paddy yellowtail and dorado.
Perhaps a better shot at Bluefin Tuna too.
The sport boats did well in this zone today. Take a look down the finger at 31.10 x 117.05.
437
Late in the afternoon some Big Bluefin pooped up in this area. The Sea Adventure 80 had 10 70+lb tuna at 6pm and the Ocean Odyessy was close by and boated 11.
They were 80 miles from the dock on a return course of 35 degree’s.
That places them down around the 437 spot.
Try looking at a 5 mile block around 31.31 x 118.08
