SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 3 PM PDT THIS AFTERNOON
…GALE WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 3 PM PDT THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH LATE TONIGHT…
The Halibut in Beecher’s Bay are still willing to bite as long as the weather allows you to get there.
Today’s forecast says it’s not a good idea
34 00.20 x 120 00.00 Beecher’s Bay (big area)
Catalina Island
Not much happening. The fishing is slowing down. All the Yellowtail action is still on the eastern half of the island.
There was a Yellow caught at Hen Rock and another at K-20. Both on Live Squid.
The best action is on Calico Bass. Pretty good numbers of these fish biting in tight to structure.
Little action on barracuda from time to time too, but no big scores on these fish right now.
33.24.35 x 118.21.93 Hen Rock
33.23.06 x 118.21.32 K-20

33.19.32 x 118.22.28 Palisades
33.19.32 x 118.18.23 Slide – Quarry
San Clemente Island
Some Yellowtail are being caught along the frontside of the Island at White rock and Purse seine rock.
The cove however is dead. No squid and no Yellowtail
32.53.58 x 118.26.36 White Rock
32.52.23 x 118.24.75 Purse Seine Rock
32.48.92 x 118.21.25 Pyramid Head

Horseshoe Kelp
Scattered small schools of Barracuda are being found but the best fishing by far is for the Rockfish out on the 150.

33.40.00 x 118.13.34 Horseshoe North

Izors Reef
Sand bass are chomping on Live Squid in the late evenings. You can also catch your own squid here as well.
33.39.03 x 118.06.08 Izors Reef
Dana Point
water conditions are improving….slowly, and the Calico Bass are beginning to turn back on. It’s still tough fishing. Best bet is to work deep into the kelp if you going to find any legal sized bass.
33.25.38 x 117.39.52 Middle Kelp – Hard Bottom
33.24.45 x 117.38.14 Clemente Reef (San Clemente Kelp)

33.08.060 x 117.20.860 Encina Powerplant Pipe

No new info on the Squid and Seabass. If you go here send us a report.
Crystal Pier
No new info on this Squid spot either. At last word some yellowtail and a Seabass were caught on the Squid Beds in 80 feet, but this dope is several days old now.
32.47.58 x 117.16.58· Pacific Beach Artificial Reef – Crystal Pier
Coronado Islands
Yellowtail were seen again at Pukey Point by a couple of divers. No reports of any hook and line Yellowtail however.
Only report we got in was a slow to fair pick on rockfish at the Rockpile.

14 mile bank /267/209/277/312
Mostly slow kelp paddy fishing but everyday somebody finds a nugget with Yellowtail and Dorado on it.
33.08 x 117.41 Pair of yellows and 1 Dorado on this kelp
182
Report from Kris on the Grim Reefer:
left Dana Point at 8am so we could move the boat to mission bay for the week. traveled to the 267,209,181 and saw virtually nothing. 5 miles north of the 182 we found a tiny stringer of kelp. threw, bait and started to drift. looked down and a Dorado was circling the boat. Rob baited it and landed it quick(12pounder). Another was spotted, but it split. then we turned and burned for the barn.
MEXICO
425 to the Upper Hidden Bank
This area is you best shot for kelp paddy yellowtail right now.
Not every kelp is holding but enough are to make it worth the run.
Don’t be surprised if you see the San Diego 3/4 day fleet working this area
There is also a very small number of Dorado and the odd Bluefin found on the troll.
32.11 x 117.24 Wide open kelp. Limits of Yellowtail
32.10 x 117.26 Dorado Jig stop
32.01 x 117.20 Lots of Yellowtail on a kelp
32.06 x 117.24 Lots of Yellow on a kelp
Tuna Pens
The pens have moved out to the west a few miles 31.48 x 117.18
Water temp reported to be 68.4 but no much action happening at them. Perhaps after they become more stable in 1 spot things will perkup.
Mushroom Bank
8pm update: Bluefin are showing in good numbers just to the Southwest of the Mushroom. Take a look around a 5 to 10 mile block centered at 31.57 x 118.40
Airplane to the Dumping Grounds
This is the location of most of the Bluefin action happening right now.
Yesterday and again this morning the weather is horrible. At least the wind is down under 10 mph today so maybe it will begin to lay down.
The Bluefin in this area are almost all coming on sonar marks with only the rare jig fish.
They are deep, holding at around 100 feet so a good sized sinker is working best to get bit.
This is extremely hit and miss fishing. Some boats are scoring while others are not seeing much of anything.
Look in a block from 31.49 to 31.39 x 118.13 to 118.25
Very few kelps in this zone and not many, if any yellowtail or Dorado on them if you find one
155 miles
This is the other zone that the Bluefin are coming from. Most of the boats down this way are on 2 to 6 day trips.
Tons of Yellowtail on kelps down the 117.00 line and inside to 116.40. No big showing of Bluefin however. There are some being caught in the 35 to 60lb class but its far from wide open.
Still NO Yellowfin seen or caught down here today.

Report from John on the Como No:
Fished Purse Siene Rock at San Clemente Island with squid. We couldn’t get any squid from Nacho. He said it has been weeks since he’s gotten any sardines. We did subiki up a dozen small mackerel but our squid attacked them as soon as they got in the bait tank. We caught a 8#, 12# and 18# yellowtail by fly lining squid on 12# straight mono. Water was 68 degrees and off color with very little current.

Bluefin Tuna and Yellowtail are both still around but conditions are just not quite right. The water is clean and warm enoungh but there is very little current.
The bait of choice BY FAR is Live Squid. Both the Bluefin and the Yellowtail are keyed up on it although you can get a Bluefin to bite a HOT Anchovy if you can get it past the horde of 5lb Bonito.
Plenty of BIG 7 to 10lb Whitefish, Sheephead and Salmon Groupers are chewing as well.

Report from Pam Sharp fishing on the Electra:
I had an opportunity last weekend to get out on a 2-day trip on the Electra out of Oceanside.
We left the dock a little before the scheduled departure time, loaded with some nice looking anchovies, and stopped at the bait dock for some big sardines.
While at the dock, Captain Joey Helgren went over our options. Although the weekend weather forecast was pretty good, the weather had been up a bit during the week preceding our trip.
The bluefin bit had been decent at the Cortez Bank earlier in the week, as well as a few boats getting some really nice sized yellowtail.
The plan was to head to Cortez Bank overnight, and stop at San Clemente on the way to get some squid from one of the boats there. Although the ride over wasn’t bad, the squid we’d hoped for wasn’t there. They made a few trips through the squid grounds but couldn’t find anything that looked like it would float or could be jigged.
Early morning produced a wide open bonito bite, with few bluefin mixed in. Five bluefin were landed and certainly more of them were lost, mostly to pulled hooks. The anchovies were definitely favored.
The Eldorado showed up at the bank mid-morning and handed us some squid. We made use of those to put 11 nice yellowtail on the boat, most of those went for the live squid, but some where also caught on the big sardines. We made a second pass on the Eldorado for some fresh dead squid, and fished the bank until dark.
In addition to the bluefin and yellowtail, there were a number of big sheephead, whitefish, and some extra large sculpin as well.
Captain Joey came down in the evening to discuss options for the second day. There wasn’t any reason to expect conditions to change much at the bank, so reviewing our options, we would head overnight toward the Butterfly bank to see if we could find any kelps for some yellowtail, dorado or tuna.
Well, the short story on the second day was a few good looking kelps, with nobody home. One showed a few fish on the meter, but no one was enticed out for sardines or jigs.
The long day lead to some creative entertainment, and one angler, Ryan, was the target of a prank lead by Danny Lynch and with the participation of most of the passengers and crew.
With Ryan distracted, a gunny sack was run down his troll line. Ryan came running when everyone yelled “HOOK UP!” He was a really good sport, and insisted on having his picture taken with his catch!
Louie did a great job in the galley; the food was excellent. Breakfast to order the first day, French toast, bacon, sausage and eggs day two. Lunch the first day was carne asada and/or fish tacos, and day two was burgers to order. Dinner Saturday night was a pork tenderloin with grilled potatoes, mixed vegetables and a Caesar salad…
I’d never been on the Electra before, and I’d have to say the deck space was impressive! I think all 23 of us could have almost fished together on the bow. The space up the rail left room to pass another angler easily, even with the entire side rod racks filled with rods. The area in the stern is equally spacious, with three large bait tanks and lots of hand well space.
Inside there are new pads on the bunks, each of the bunks covered with a fitted sheet and clean pillow cases, with extra large blankets. There were also brand new pads in the galley. Outside of the galley is a spacious sun deck with tables, a perfect place for a meal on a warm day!
This pic is of me, hung on a very large Black Seabass

Tuna Pens
The word is the pens are being moved. 1 set is headed for Ensenada and the other is heading for the coronados.
The Tuna are not following the moving pens
The Airplane
This is a reposting of yesterdays dope as the intel is exactly the same today.
Some of the boats out fishing tuna today had nice scores in the morning on the smaller grade Bluefin. There is a break that runs up and down around the 118 latitude. The weather was sporty out there for small boats today.
The bigger boats did long drifts and had 1-3 fish hooked up most of the morning. It takes a ton of chum to get these fish to go. Also flying the kite was working.
The sardines from Mission bay and San Diego were reported stellar today.
Find the 1.3 degree break between the 117.58 and 118.05 lines on a course for the airplane bank and you’ll find some tuna.
The Airplane Bank is located at 31.50 x 118.08 65 miles on a 224 degree heading from San Diego.
Some boats have found kelps holding above and inside the bank just below the 32/118 cross.
155 miles
Tons of Yellowtail on kelps down the 117.00 line and inside to 116.40. No big showing of Bluefin however. There are some being caught in the 35 to 60lb class but its far from wide open.
NO Yellowfin seen or caught down here to today.

Oxnard
The condo’s near Deep Hole have squid again. We have not heard of any white sea bass with it but no one has been fishing it.
Oceanside
Hey guys! Fished a few hrs Sunday night around sunset. Kept it simple and headed out of Oside to the northern artificials and anchored up in about 55 ft. Just some old squid from the back of the freezer for bait but had a fairly steady bite with a good mix of fish.. Caught multiple calicos, Johnny bass, tree fish, and sculpin, a sandbass and a flounder.. nothing of size but a much better bite than the last few weeks, the bigger calicos were hitting a squid strip fished slow on a lead head pretty steadily. Water was around 65 and was much more blue than it has been lately. – Ed on the Fo Reel

San Diego Bay
Be careful going out of the bay. Right hand side (West Side) near Ralphs Surf Break there is a submerged sportfisher that has sunk and is on the hook. Big navigational hazard that is unmarked.
Coronado Islands
The 3/4 day boat San Diego took a look at the islands and down to the Rockpile today. He did not get any yellowtail and ended up fishing cod.
We have heard of walls of yellowtail off Pukey Point over the weekend seen by divers. Expect to see yellowtail on kelps just offshore of the islands as one was found yesterday at 32.20 x 117.22. The kelp was full of dorado and yellowtail with tern birds all over it. This area is just outside of North Island.
Offshore
Cortes Bank
Talked with Danny Lynch about his trip aboard the Electra for the last 2 days.
Danny said that the Bluefin fishing at the Cortes Bank is a live squid only bite. If you don’t have live squid you won’t catch a tuna. Thankfully they got 6 passes of squid off another boat to catch their 6 Bluefin and 11 yellowtail for the trip but it wasn’t enough.
The cod, whitefish, bonito and whitefish were plentiful with finbait but that was not what they were after.
The fish would come down the line of boats and everyone with flylined squid would get hooked up. Those with out would just watch the show.
There was no squid to be made in Pyramid Cove. None of the commercial boats there could make it anywhere on San Clemente Island over the weekend.
The nearest Squid is on the Frontside of Catalina Island in 150′ of water next to ship rock at the Isthmus. Bring it from the receivers if you can.
The weather was nasty day 1 and beginning of day 2 (Sunday). On the way home inside the bight the weather laid down in the afternoon.
They did not find any kelps holding and found no productive water as they drove through the West and East Butterfly then up to the corner just below the 43, down the Mexican/US line all the way home through the 9 mile bank and up the line. Not a single fish caught, a lot of dead water.
The Cortes Bank is located 100 Miles out of San Diego, Newport, Dana Point, etc at 32.26.25 x 119.07.50. It is open ocean with no cover and not a small boat spot.
267
Bill on the Agitator reported a jig marlin released this morning at 10:41am. He was working the area of 33.17 x 117.51 in 66.5F water.
Black and green marlin jig.
He finally got that single marlin everyone has been seeing at the 267…
181
Brett aboard the 60′ Viking Mayhem out of Newport Beach reported in yesterday catching 5 yellowtail off a kelp. There were dorado with them chasing bait but they were hooked up with yellowtail the whole time the fish were up. The water temp was 64F.
For general reference the 181 is located at 32.54.50 x 117.53.00.
9 Mile Bank
Aaron aboard the Hemingway’s Whiskey took a trip to the 9 mile bank with his kids.
Told the wife we’d run to the 9, bag a rat yellowtail or two for the kiddos and be back by noon. Not to be.
Ran South 9 to the 226 to the 182 and back to the North 9 for nothing but kelps with no one home but bait fish. Kids still had fun and I still have fish in the freezer, so can’t complain.
425
Captain Ali Hussainy of the Tuna Jihad is out with the AFTCO guys today fishing local. He decided to stay close and fish for what is biting instead of chase tuna far for a scratch. So far it’s paid off.
By 12:30pm he and his crew were well on their way past double limits of fish for the day. Lots of catch and releases on smaller yellowtail.
He got in to the zone of the 425 and ever since grey light it’s been game on as he works his way towards the hidden bank.
The whole mosquito and 3/4 day fleet is in this zone catching fish.
The weather is still up.
These are all kelps holding yellowtail and skittish dorado. Water temp 66.7F
32.13 x 117.23.7
32.12.5 x 117.22.6
32.12 x 117.25.7
32.11.6 x 117.27
32.11.5 x 117.27.5 Also baited a Marlin on this kelp.
31.58.713 x 117.23.356 Double Kelps Lots of boats on, everyone bent.
Amanda aboard the Leslie Ann fished for Dan’s Birthday down near the 425. Had 3 yellows on Saturday. Happy Birthday!
