Catalina Island
Reports coming back from the island this weekend were that the island reported slow due to sea lion pressure. Lots of blue perch and opal eye with hardly any calico bass caught from the East End to Avalon.
The seals were trouble at Hen Rock but there is yellowtail there.
Empire Landing and Red Bluff both have lots of yellowtail, getting them to chew is tough with all the sea lions. Empire Landing also had great calico bass fishing.
Squid can be made in 150′ of water straight out from the Isthmus, it’s all you want.
Mackerel from Arrow Point and to the West.
Huntington Beach
William called in with a report of good sand bass fishing at Izor’s this afternoon.
He fished from 1pm-3:30pm and had some nice 20″ plus sand bass caught using live squid.
Izors is located at 33.39.03 x 118.06.08 meter around and find some structure to drift or anchor on.
Live squid can be bought at the Long Beach Bait Company or Nacho’s.
Rockpile
2 miles below the rockpile a sportboat had a stop for 50 yellowtail on a kelp. Lots of dorado seen, not hooked. General area 32.15.00 x 117.10.50
Offshore
Marlin and Dorado have been located.
15+ marlin and lots of open water dorado were located yesterday by a working swordfish plane.
Out of common courtesy if a plane doesn’t call you out and is spinning it means he’s on a swordfish and he has a boat inbound to stick it. Please keep out of the way or else this type of info passed on will dry up for us…
The fish and bait are popping around mid day high and dry during the slack tide. Very easy to see on the surface with the calm seas. Look for schools of anchovies.
The fish are located on the warm side of the break. The break is pushing South and may fall apart. Make sure to take a look at the 406/289 break as well.
Update:1:30PM. Couple marlin boats looked at the area and found streaky water with the better water temps to the North near the Mackerel Bank. Lots of bait in the Northern area but they found no fish. Sword boats working the area fast, not sticking around. The fish are on the move with the water. it’s out there somewhere.
Update 3:30PM. Tough to find fish today as the wind was up in the area. Very hard to see fish from the air and tower. Fleet gave up for the day.
Cortes Bank
Boats fishing around the Cortes Bank reported in this morning with OK bluefin fishing yesterday before the wind came up. They have been doing long soaks around the high spot and catching a few fish an hour.
There is also large yellowtail roaming the area when the current is running around the high spot.
Lots of bonito on the bank as well.
The Electra reported in with 6 Bluefin, 11 yellowtail, 135 big bonito, 70 assorted rockfish, 50 whitefish and 50 sheephead for a 2 day trip to the Cortes Bank.
Oceanside
About 6 miles off the beach in the area of 33.10 x 117.34 the water looks great. There is bait in the area. Make sure to take a look at it while headed elsewhere.
277
Single kelp reported not biting but loaded with yellowtail and dorado this morning. 33.11 x 118.02
9 Mile Bank
Chris reported in catching a big opah while fishing the 9 mile bank. It ate a sardine 60′ down. 1/2 hour fight to land this beast.
101
There is a temperature break that runs North to South between the 101 bank and down to the Upper Finger. Marlin, yellowtail and dorado were reported on that break. Don’t be afraid to work East.
425
Get 5-8 miles below the 435 before kelps start holding fish.
Good yellowtail and dorado fishing again this morning on the double kelp that was reported yesterday.
The kelps are located around 32.11 x 117.24.
Another productive kelp also at 32.09 x 117.39
2 more great yellowtail kelps 32.17.940 x 117.27.201
Josh reported in with limits and at least 3 times more limits released of yellowtail and dorado working around the 425 by himself. He called out on the radio and one other boat took part in the 3 kelps that were holding.
32.10 x 117.23
32.14 x 117.25
32.16 x 117.27
Hidden Bank
Karen wrote in – Fever kept me off the boat this trip. Reported to me by the Skipper of the Bubba Jean: Baited up at EBBCO, SD Bay at 1:30 am. The boys at the barge were awesome, as always, and the bait was fantastic; appeared to be cured. 10″ green-back mackerel & 7″ dines.
Arrived at the most Southwestern pen at 6:00 am & immediately hooked up to a monster that smoked 400+ yards of 50 lb. before snapping off. Fished the pens till 8:30 am with no further action.
Pointed the boat to the Hidden Bank. First kelp West of pens produced one Dodo. Two miles later, kelp was good for one 15 lb. YT. Continued on & over the top of the Hidden, no signs of life or kelps.
Steered for the 425, found 8 – 10 kelps with nobody home; done for the day & headed to the barn.
The big bull seal at Shelter Island thought it was his birthday as we unloaded our remaining scoop of those beautiful baits.
Got a little bumpy between 7- 9 am; other than that seas were calm, as reported by NOAA.
Upper 500
Ronson aboard the Reel Hard reported in with a single Bluefin caught on the troll at 31.48 x 117.29.70. Kelps in the area were also holding as he caught 23 yellowtail as well. The weather was up and it was pretty snotty.
He fished the pens in the morning for nothing before moving out to the upper 500.
378 / 450
Start above the 213 and work down towards the tuna numbers below. The tuna are marching up the line and west. Kelps in the area are reported to be loaded with yellowtail.
1010 Trench to the 213
Boats working the 1010 reported in with kelp paddy yellowtail and a few Bluefin.
The wind picked up offshore mid morning and made it sloppy for the smaller boats.
Sportboats with sonar located a few willing to bite schools in the area between the 213 and 1010 trench.
Take a look in the area of 31.42 x 117.46 and 31.45 x 117.48.
1067 Knuckle
Boats working the second day of 2 days had most of their bluefin tuna in the area of 31.39 x 117.47 yesterday. They started out in the area today and although they found tuna on the sonar did not put together a bite. The weather was up in this zone not helping the bite.
Tuna Pens
The pens are still in the area of 31.47 to 31.52 x 117.14-117.15.
Boats in the area are reporting very slow bluefin fishing on the pens. A few have a single fish with many not catching any at all. Most boats spread out after 8am and start working west looking for kelps out to the 1010 and up the 213,390 then home. Get off the beaten path and find your own kelp…
Andy on the Wet-O’s sent in a report.
Did the Friday afternoon/Saturday run down to the pens.
On the way down found a very productive kelp at 32-01.28×117-11.69 for limits of YT to 15 lbs. and one hen dorado 8-10 lbs.
Got lucky and set up for a perfect overnight drift to wind up about a mile above the pens at grey light. Got one BFT (40+) at the north pen. Overall very slow action. Only a handful of boats could be seen hooked up.
Water temps at the pens were 66.5.
Left that scene at mid day to run back up the line and found another productive kelp between the upper hidden bank and the 425 for all the C&R YT you want. Were a few dodo’s on the paddy, but they didn’t want to play. Kelp was at 32-05.35×117-23.06.
The paddies up north had temps at about 68.5. Bait was perfect. Large ‘deans with a few macks thrown in the mix. Lasted over 24 hours no problem. Wound up with about 8 pieces left in t he tank.
Overall a good trip, but would have liked to boated a couple more BFT. WAY too many boats. All that pressure put the fish down. Oh, by the way… watch out for a drifting long line near the pens. Got into a SNAFU with that crap today!
Weather was just a bit bumpy on the way down, but settled down nicely today. Just a bit of wind this afternoon to make the drifts a bit faster than you’d like.
Mike wrote in from his trip yesterday.
We fished the tuna pens and about ten miles around them. Hard fishing, but we managed to boat some good fish. 10 Bluefin to 44lbs and 18 Yellowtail, three up to 18-20lbs, the rest 4-7 lbs.
Long soaks, on live bait was what we got all the blue fin on. No troll fish, and we trolled our butts off.
Got to the tuna pens around 8 am.
Stopped on a few paddies on the way for a some rat yellows.
The hot bait for the YT was the Mega Bait. I scored pretty well on the YT.
We drifted about for miles, and went looking for the Pens again. Found all five of them, and about 50 other boats (Googanville) Got one BFT in the morning, and a few more yellows on kelp.
Called it a trip, (a day short) and was back in SD around 2 am.
Chad on the Madrugador fished the pens with his 15 year old cousin yesterday. His cousin caught his first tuna every on a slow trolled sardine on the center out rigger. Came in around #75 on the Shimano scale.
Sam reported in from yesterdays trip.
Fished the south pen yesterday 8/11 and then trolled west for nothing. Didn’t see anyone catch anything.
Lot of boats in the area.
Returned to the south pen for one 50lb bluefin on a long soak.
Great weather and had a lot of fun with the kids.

San Pedro Bait Barge-Medium to large anchovies, live squid, and frozen squid
Long Beach Bait Co.-Live squid
Nacho’s-Live squid and anchovies
Newport Bait Barge-Medium to large anchovies, live squid, and frozen squid
Oceanside Bait Receiver-Medium to large sardines
Mission Bay and San Diego-Sardines and a little bit of anchovie
Hermosa Beach
Although there was plenty of squid last night, it seems that the white seabass might have moved on. The only thing biting last night were the bat rays. Maybe with a little less pressure they will decide to bite again.
Newport Beach
Good bass fishing on the twilight boat last night. A mixed bag of calico bass and sand bass with a lot of legal fish being caught. These fish have been coming out of hiding once the sun starts to set.

33.38.70 x 118.12.27 East Horseshoe
33.38.40 x 118.14.00 Horseshoe
San Clemente Island
If you’re in Pyramid Cove in the morning you will have a shot at some of yellowtail cruising around. There are fish crashing around, but not many biting. There are a lot of boats in the cove due to the tournaments going on this weekend. You might want to take a look around the caves, as well.

Dana Point
We got a report Capt. Chuck Kemnitz on the Sum Fun from last night: Ran last nights twilight with good calico fishing…all you wanted 12-13 inch fish with a fair sprinkling of legals. Lost one Yt and saw a couple more. Water is cleaning up nicely from Dana Point up, but still looks like crap down below. Perfect quality anchovies. Things are on the upswing once again for the OC coast. One YT caught earlier in the day…Salt Creek area.
33.28.65 X 117.43.38 Salt Creek
33.28.81 x 117.44.58 Salt Creek 2
33.26.70 x 117.41.00 Dana Hard Bottom
Just received a report from Dave on the Off Shore Baby: Fished Dana point to Salt creek and caught one 18″sandbass and 1 10′ + thresher. Calm waters, kind of green with tems around 65 degrees. I was using sardines and anchovies very good bait.
Oceanside
Scott just emailed in this report: Found these yellowtail 12 miles out between Oceanside and Del Mar.
La Jolla
La Jolla was a little slower in the afternoon and last night. No squid found and not biters on the finbait. There are still those yellowtail roaming around the northwest corner of the kelp. Look for the birds working the bait in about 90 feet of water.
Offshore
US Waters
181-182
We got a report from Mike:Started out of Newport heading towards 181. Water cooled off to 63. Shot over to the 182. Picked up 5 nice yellow tail of a paddy with live squid @ the 182 (32.40.32 x 117.41.18), water temp 63. Cruise by the 43, nada, water 62.
Kelp paddy between the 181-182 was holding 20-30 bigger dorado.
32.44.06 x 117.44.07
The Electra had a jig strike on bluefin tuna 5 miles east of the Cortes highspot. No word on how many they got off of that stop.
Mexico
425
There are 2 big kelp paddies just southwest of the highspot that are holding yellowtail and dorado that is producing very well. A few boats have already gotten their limits this morning. Barney Rubble got this nice dorado on one of these kelps.
32.12 x 117.23
302
A single kelp here that produced a couple yellowtail.
32.27 x 117.31
The tuna pens are pretty much in the same area as yesterday, just a couple of miles to the northwest. The fishing is definitely slower this morning than has been with over 100 boats fishing these pens. That is a lot of pressure on these things. Directly out west there are some kelp paddies, but they all seem to be holding nothing but bait. The most north tuna pen had a few bluefin caught off of it mid morning.
31.47 x 117.15
There is a kelp holding yellowtail in the vicinity of:
31.52.20 x 117.17.20
1010 Trench
BD Outdoors very Ali was fishing down this way today and found a kelp paddy that produced limits of yellowtail and dorado. He said it was all you wanted. They also got into some good bluefin tuna. They were more show than go, but they did put quite a few on the boat. They metered a lot of fish, but they just didn’t to play.

Take a right coming out and you will find the fleet in about 75 feet of water. This is where you are going to find the white seabass! There are quite a few boats on this stuff right now as the bite has been going pretty good since last night.
This is the spot you will want to take a look at for the squid and white seabass in the area:
33.51.53 x 118.25.34
Catalina Island
We really hate to sound like a broken record for this area, but the best spots to fish are going to be on the east side of the island. You will want to start up around Long Point and work your way east to find the yellowtail. You really need to have live squid and a good down hill current. If you don’t have either of these, it is going to be a little bit harder to get a bite. There have been a couple fish taken at the very east end under the light, so anywhere in between Long Point and the east end light.
33.24.38 x 118.21.92 Long Point
33.24.35 x 118.21.93 Hen Rock
33.23.06 x 118.21.32 K-20
33.17.960 x 118.19.000 Under the light
Oceanside and south
Water conditions are improving everyday with the water warming up and getting much cleaner south of Oceanside Harbor. With the water still a little on the green side and the amount of bait there is, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to maybe look for some thresher sharks in tight to the beach. There have been some sand bass, calico bass, and some halibut showing in the shallows, also.
33.10.340 x 117.22.700 Buccaneer Pipe
33.08.060 x 117.20.860 Encina Powerplant Pipe
33.05.235 x 117.19.183 Carlsbad Art Reef – Ponto
32.57.000 x 117.16.750 Del Mar Kelp
32.57.564 x 117.16.743 Del Mar Kelp, downhill current only
32.56.962 x 117.16.604 Del Mar Kelp South End
La Jolla
In the morning hours between the 3/4 spot and the North West Corner there have been random schools of homeguard yellowtail cruising around. The New Seaforth looks at them every trip and will usually hook a few. This is all on sonar marks. This would be a great opportunity to slow troll some mackeral right outside the kelp line.
Offshore
US Waters
181-182 Ridgeline is pretty much devoid of live right now. There haven’t been any kelps found out in this area in a couple of days.
Cortes Bank slower due to weather. Less than 1 fish per angler on the trips returning yesterday. The South East Corner that the fish have been on holds 4 sport boats max. All other boats are in left field if they don’t get a spot. Barely any other game in town. Yellowtail are on the bank being fished with flyline and dropper loop rigs.
Mexico

There is a kelp just above the 425 that is holding yellowtail

Tuna Pens
Bluefin fishing is a little slower than earlier in the week. The weather coming up did not help. Crowds of 40+ boats around the pens might be pushing the fish down as well.
This is the general area for the tuna pens:
31.43 x 117.13
31.45 x 117.16
The fishing directly on the pens is a little slower than it has been so guys are getting away from them a little bit. The fish have seemed to have moved out into the surrounding area. Theses fish are being found on the sonar and are being caught on long drifts. The afternoon is definitely biting better than the morning.
