Channel Islands
SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE TONIGHT
Waiting on word of some coastal action. Islands are blown out and the Seas are nasty.
Last info we had about the Islands was for a 10 to 15lb Seabass bite at The Eagles nest at Santa Rosa Island. This info is several days old however.
33 55.90 x 120 00.10  Eagle’s Nest

Redondo Beach
Sloppy, choppy conditions overnight and the morning kept many boats from hitting the Hermosa Seabass. The Squid and the fish are still there however with a 45lb fish weighed in this morning.
King Harbor has excelent 5 inch anchovy for sale and this is the perfect bait to hit the harbor for some of those Bonito. Some days this bite is great followed by 1 or 2 slow days.
33.51.53 x 118.25.34  Squid and Seabass area

Catalina Island
Still fairly good numbers of Yellowtail at the Island with the focus being up west of Arrow Point to the west end.
LIVE SQUID is a must have bait. Only a very small number are being caught on the Sardines or Iron.
No word of any Seabass lately.
Calico Bass are biting really good though. Any kelp bed or boiler rock is holding fish right now
Baracuda are also active. these fish are on the move up and down the Island
Darrell on the Mary Clair will not be at the Island over the weekend. The Long Beach carnage proably will be though.
Check with the bait barges in LA, Long Beach and Newport beach first though. They are planning to have some latter on today or tonight.
33.28.730 x 118.36.200  West End
33.28.082 x 118.36.220  West End High Spot
33.26.790 x 118.34.600  Iron Bound cove
33.26.400 x 118.34.330  Ribbon Rock

San Clemente Island
This is the current Yellowtail hotspot. Nice quality 15 to 30lb Yellows are thick in the Cove and spread from there to China Point.
Lot’s of the big sportboats are fishing this bite.
This bite is also entirely on Live Squid. Only a small handful on the Yoyo or Sardines.
There is also a shot at a White seabass with this coming full moon. Backside spots like Lost Point, Eel Point and the Dunes are great spots to look at in the morning grey light.
32.48.92 x 118.21.25  Pyramid Head
32.48.00 x 118.21.50  Pyramid Reef
32.49.00 x 118.23.00  Pyramid Cove
32.48.45 x 118.24.17  The Caves
32.47.75 x 118.26.00  China Point
Always make sure the Island is open before making the run.

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
It was a parking lot of Light and net boats last night at Izors reef.
The Sand Bass are biting a little bit but not like it was before the wind started blowing on Tuesday.
Last night was a sloppy choppy mess. Twilight and Mornings are best with little happening during the afternoon hours.
33.39.87 x 118.13.50  Horseshoe South
33.40.00 x 118.13.34  Horseshoe North
33.38.70 x 118.12.27  East Horseshoe
33.38.40 x 118.14.00  Horseshoe
33.39.40 x 118.13.42  Buoy #1
33.38.10 x 118.14.05  Bull Kelp
33.38.33 x 118.14.08  Olympic Rock
33.41.73 x 118.08.72  Gambler Wreck
33.41.06 x 118.07.73  Sand Bass Junction
33.39.03 x 118.06.08  Izors Reef
33.37.35 x 118.03.64  108 spot
33.37.30 x 117.59.87  Power Plant

Dana Point to Oceanside
Off color water has slowed down the bite here. Calico Bass continue to be the primary catch and most of them are shorts.
It’s still good fishing, just not the wide open stupid bite it was a week ago before all this wind screwed conditions up.
33.22.96 X 117.36.80  San Mateo Point
33.20.88 x 117.34.05  San Onofre
33.21.79 x 117.33.78  Domes
33.18.58 x 117.29.13  Barn Kelp

La Jolla / Point Loma
Lots of Mackerel around this morning. The bite on almost everything else is slow.
Some Yellowtail were seen early at the North West Corner and at the southern edge of the MPA, but not many, if any were caught.
32.51.22 x 117.17.62  North West Corner
32.51.33 x 117.16.30  La Jolla Cove
32.47.58 x 117.16.58· Pacific Beach Artificial Reef – Crystal Pier
32.43.79 x 117.16.66  Hill Street (Bull Kelp)
32.43.78 x 117.16.51  Hill Street
32.43.18 x 117.16.63  College Area
32.42.61 x 117.16.74  Green Tank
32.42.51 x 117.16.64  Green Tank #2
32.42.00 x 117.16.30  Point Loma Kelp
32.41.45 x 117.16.31  The Lab
32.40.87 x 117 16.16  5 Tanks

OFFSHORE
Overall the seas are not on the friendly side right now. Large 6 to 8 foot swells only 6 to 8 seconds apart are making life miserable.
There is a chance this stuff lay down over the weekend but it might not too. Depends on how this coming Moonson stuff reacts with the ocean.

Dana Point
The wind over the past few days may have wiped out the Dorado and Yellowtail action on kelps, at least for now.
We need some low wind steady weather days for this bite to regenerate.
We have some thunderstorms in the forecast this weekend. Will interesting to see what this does to the fishing.

La Jolla
Kelp at 32.46 x 117.24 was found holding about a dozen 25 to 30lb grade Yellowtail.

Mexico
Tuna Pens
31.42 x 117.18 and 31.46 x 117.15
This is the locations of the Tuna pens that is seeing the most attention do to a large number on 10 to 15lb Bluefin on it. Fair number of larger models up to 65-70lbs as well. There is also a few Dorado and Yellowtail swimming around the spot.
There are a number of other pens being pulled up the line. If you head South on the 117.17 line between 31.40 and 31.30 with the radar set to 8 – 10 miles you should be able to find the other pens.
While this isn’t true Bluefin hunting the bite is good and worth at least part of your time spent offshore.
Be sure to make a nice long drift with chum going before you make a SLOW move back up above the pens for a new drift back down past them.
Don’t just drive straight back up through everybody’s chumline to reset your drift. Rather what you want to do is swing wide of everybody and go slow.
You might also might want to consider slow trolling a Sardine on your trip back up.

The pic is a reposting from yesterdays report. It shows a number of important things.
1st the Bluefin are in the clean COOL water up against a warm water break.
Travel south along this edge from the 425 down to the pens.
There is a high likely hood of spotting Tuna on this route.

2nd is this north to south warm water band running down from the 302 to below the upper Hidden Bank.
If your going to look for or find any Dorado, to go with you Bluefin, this is the water to be looking at.
Again it is along this edge between cool and warm where you most likely to find them.

Call in report from Blake fishing on the First String:
He just returned from a 2.5 day. Weather was very snotty. They fished the Tuna Pens mostly and found lots of Bluefin willing to bite. They also found lots of Yellowtail on kelps in the surrounding waters.
Great trip except for the lousy weather.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
If you go fishing please give us a call or shoot us an email.

Report Updated: September 20, 2013 at 10:47 pm

LA to Huntington
The Horeseshoe down to the Newport Reef areas were reported slow as the sand bass have moved off the mud and on to the structure spots. They are moving around a lot and have been hard to find consistently.
The AM hours have been better than the PM hours for getting a fish to bite.
Majority of the boats are anchoring up on spots such as Izors Reef and waiting out the fish to come swimming through.
Pick a spot out of the green water that has moved in on the Horseshoe and put some baits on to the bottom with a dropper loop, stick it in the rod holder and wait.

San Clemente Island
A lot more traffic at the island today but results are still good with plenty of yellowtail for the sport boats.
The fish are located in Pyramid Cove and are roaming around between 12 and 15 fathoms of water.
Fish live squid on a dropper loop or flyline. Heavy yo-yo iron has also got a few bites when the fish are under the boat.

There is no bait for sale at the island. Make your own in Pyramid Cove or buy it from Newport or Long Beach.

32.48.92 x 118.21.25  Pyramid Head
32.48.00 x 118.21.50  Pyramid Reef
32.49.00 x 118.23.00  Pyramid Cove
32.48.45 x 118.24.17  The Caves
32.47.75 x 118.26.00  China Point
Always make sure the Island is open before making the run.

La Jolla
The South end of the kelp line is reported cold 61F. The North West Corner is reported 71F. On the North West Corner of the kelp line there is a lot of mackerel and sardine. With the bait fish are a few yellowtail. Nothing full speed and it’s really tough to fish due to the seals, cormorants and dolphin in the small area beating up the bait.

In the cove squid can be jigged easily during the day time. The light boats have moved out. 1 light boat reported off Torrey Pines still.

Coronado Islands
Green and Brown streaky water has moved in to the islands. Poor fishing reported.

Offshore

Hit the 425 this morning and found white caps at 6:30 along with a swell from two different directions. Lots of empty Kelps in 65.7 degree off color water with no other boats in sight. Decided to head towards the 371,but after taking water over the bow a few times I scratched that idea. Save your fuel for a trip farther down the beach. Good Luck. Rich on the 28′ SOUTHWESTERN

Nothing has changed. Still good fishing at the tuna pens this morning with lots of hookups and not so many landings. The fish are chewing 20-25lb test and being snapped off or tangled. If one could get hooked up on 30-50lb test the results would be better. Sardines are being used for bait. Chrome jigs also have been bit.

The weather is still reported sloppy this morning.

One of the boats reported that the fishing is better closer to home than the longer range 130+ mile area now and that all 1 day to 2.5 day boats will be working the area this weekend.

Tuna Pens
31.42 x 117.18
31.48 x 117.15

Notice how the tuna pens are up against the current break? That is where you will want to look for fish and pens.
tunapens71813

The tuna pens move around with the currents along with a boat pulling them. If one was to head South on the 117.17 line between 31.40 and 31.30 with the radar set to 8 – 10 miles they would be able to find the pens very easily.

Lou aboard the Chill emailed in a report late last night of his trip down to the tuna pens.
Left Shelter Island 3am with the wind a little breezy but not bad. At grey light the wind started up and continued all day at 15 plus knots.
We worked 4-5 tuna pins for 0 fish when finally around 9:30am we found a good one @ 31.42 x 117.18 along with 6 plus sport boats. We picked away all morning for 8 bluefin and lost another 3 after 30 plus min battles. Fish are 10-15lbs with a couple of toads.
Trolled up the line and got a jig stop bluefin @ 31.48 x 117.14 .
Then found a paddy with a couple of yellow tail.
My meter water 67.3.
Stoked to get some blood on the deck. – Lou

Channel Islands
SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE TONIGHT
Santa Rosa Island at the Eagles Nest is the location where the Seabass went crazy. Lots of 10 to 15lb seabss
Weather is a major issue now however. Steady 20mph with gust to 35.
33 55.90 x 120 00.10  Eagle’s Nest

Hermosa Beach
Guys are losing interest in the Seabass bite here even though a few fish are being caught everynight. Last night it was really rough with wind and nasty seas
The fish are only being caught between 2 and 5am. After that it is nothing but a few Sand Bass and Lepord sharks.
33.51.53 x 118.25.34  Squid and Seabass area

San Nicholas Island
SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE TONIGHT
White seabass were on a great bite here before the blow. It’s very nasty out here right now though. The weather looks to lay down this weekend though so maybe they might still be around.
The fish were at the southern end of the Island in 75 to 120 feet roughly inside of 33.09 x 119.24

Catalina Island
Yellowtail are at the west end but the wind is brutal.
A very warm spot is building up down near the Quarry on the east end. SST shows 71.55 water.
This also the best spot to avoid stiff NW wind.

Huge score of Yellowtail on the Freedom made in the cove yesterday. This morning there is a fleet of boats looking for more.
Still plenty of squid to make bait with. Some trouble with Sealions though.

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
wind has made a mess of the Horseshoe last night and the guys are finding that the fish didn’t like it much either.
The Bass and Barracuda bite took a turn for the worse.
still the water temp only dropped to 66 from a high of 71 yesterday morning.
The Sand Bass are in the spawning mode now so they will rebound quick.

Dana Point to Oceanside
Stiff wind yesterday afternoon and over night has cause a drop in local water temp. What was clean 70-71 degree water is now clean green and streaky 66 to 68 degree water.
The Calico Bass fishing is very good although its not as good as it was before the blow. It will bounce back quickly though.
The Guys were also seeing increased numbers of Yellowtail at San Mateo, San Onofre and barn Kelp. Salt creek likely has some as well.

wind screwed things up here. The water rolled over and the Barracuda disappeared.

OFFSHORE
267
This bank is roughly 12 miles out from Dana and has been the focal point of most of the Dorado action so far this season.
As of 12 noon we haven’t got any reports of Dorado being caught and the wind is making it tough to find kelps.

Avalon Bank
71 to 72 degree water on the current SST shot. An excellent break runs from the Avalon Bank down to the slide. Pretty good area to look for a Marlin. Could very well find some Dorado on kelps too.
The time for that 1st fish is here now and this is as good a spot as any to look for one.

Report from Keegan on the Ahi Nui:
Found 2 kelps halfway between the 267 and 209 holding large yellows. The first kelp had 1 tanker, 30+, that would not touch anything until we threw a large mac. Game over… picture attached. The other kelp was close by and had a 20+lber and 12lber. We speared the bigger one. 8 other paddies in the area were empty. Tuesday headed out inside and below the 267 and found 5 dry kelps. Around 1pm we were on the far, outside edge of the 267 and found 4 consecutive kelps holding. #1- Speared 15lb yt that ripped off. #2- Saw 2 15lb yt not interested in bait or spear. #3- Got yt bit on bait and farmed it. #4- Had 4 yt to 20lbs and 5 dorado 10lbers. Got yt short bit. Stuck the bigger yt with the spear. Tern birds lead us to every kelp. Tons of bait all over the 267.

Another report of giant Bonito running around here under big bird schools. These Bonito are HUGE!! 12 to over 15lbs!
Todays spot was found at 32.13 x 117.21

Hidden Bank
Just inside of the bank is what appears to be the northern edge of the Bluefin.
This morning a kelp was found at 31.54 x 117.17. This one was holding 30lb class Bluefin, 12 to 15lb Yellowtail and some 12lb Dorado.

Tuna Pen
There is a pen at 31.48 x 117.15. It is stationary and holding a school of 30lb Bluefin.
The bite here this morning is outstanding. The Pride called in to report full limits.

Scott McDaniels on the Sea Adventure 80 called in to report very good Bluefin actiuon happening today at the Tuna Pen. Over 100 Tuna have been hooked. The seas are pretty rough with 5 to 8′ short spaced swell and a steady 15-16 mph wind.
No small boats in the area.

55 to 65 miles
Pretty good Bluefin fishing is now well inside of 1 day range.
The area centered at 31.40 x 117.08. Plenty of kelps and the Bluefin are on them. They are also jumping on the trolling plugs like the Halco 130.
LOT’s of Yellowtail on kelp just to the inside and down to well past 31.20 x 116.54.

Report from Aly on the Aly Striper:
Left SI at 3am on tuesday morning our plan was to target down low 500 hopefully along the way might find some good kelps .Weather reported wind up from 10 to 15 kts all day I was ablle cruising speed 20 by grey light at 60 miles 475 below we found 2 tuna pens on the move they are heading north to us with no private boat or sport boats around, sea condition here was like washing machine, white caps everywhere rolling wave up 8 to 10 ft unconfortable to fish . We pick up 3 blue fin around 20ls lost 3 in 3 to 4 hours time its kind hit # miss . Afternoon winds was pick up so we decided to head back from here . We cruise 10 kt all the way and found 2 kelps with 1 yt on it. Due to white cabs and high wave it hard to spot the paddies. Thanks for isenglass enclosure we stayed dry.

Report from Gary on the Los Lobos:
Fished Tuesday, starting near the 475 where at 6 a.m. we got a football BFT on the naked cedar in 66.8 water, 66 nm from Mission Bay (31.40.145/117.05.757). Fished two tuna pens getting towed for a 30 lb BFT on bait, with a newbie losing his brother (also on bait) 31.32.527/117.07.122). Bait had rolled by the time we came up the line, but it was essentially WFO on the troll in hte later afternoon, roughly 17 miles inside the Hidden Bank. Football BFTs, a hen Dorodo and a 42 lb BFT. The naked cedar was the hot ticket, with the Mexican flag also getting hit a couple times. Sun was out, wind was mild, but the seas were on the roly-poly side. Ended up with 5 BFT, 3 jurel and a Dodo.
