Seabass fishing is good and steady with a number of fish caught everynight. The seabass are hovering over the big Squid Bed, centered roughly 1/4 to 1/2 mile below the pier.
The squid is spread out though to above the pier and some of the best scores are coming from guys working away from the fleet of boats.
Most of the Seabass are showing in the very early morning from 2am to 5am.
Pretty good Sand bass fishing in the daytime in the same location.

33.51.53 x 118.25.34  Squid and Seabass area.

Report from Edward on the Michael:
Headed out Friday with longtime fishing friend, Dean, and son Michael.
Heard that Hermosa WSB bite was still on, so planned to make bait overnight and fish the grey light.
Had no idea were this Hermosa action was going on, so we used fish dope numbers. The group was 0.86 miles south of those numbers.
We anchored at 33.51.533 x 118.25.343. Used light and made 2 scoops of bait in 3 hours. Only 4 boats out at night, but at grey light counted 22+ boats and kayaks around us.
Not much activity for everyone. We caught 3 rays and one potential WSB break off. Fortunately, great bait helped us catch 2 twenty pound halibuts.
Thanks Fishdope for the great starting numbers. Thanks for a great day fishing.

Report from Stephan on the Cash Money:
Got to the grounds at 2:00 AM. Metered around. Not much showing.
Finally found some. Dropped the hook and put the light out. It wanted to float but the seals were making it impossible.
Made about 30 pieces and went to work. Dropper loop. Fly line and white jig.
4:30am I get bit on the jig. Made a crazy run and worked it to the boat. My buddy Branden got a perfect gaff shot and into the boat.
I have been chasing this fish for years. Finally got my ghost.
Hermosa Seabass_7-13

San Nicholas Island
Some large scores of Seabass caught here over this past week but yesterday this bite died, with zero fish caught. Might have just been a down day?? Maybe.
Watch out for wind out here! The forecast is calling for more Gale force Winds tonight and tomorrow.

Catalina Island
Yellowtail and some White Seabass bit early this morning along the back from Church Rock to Salta Verde. This was a grey light bite and it died when the current went slack at just after 6am.
Yellowtail are also from Arrow point and up to the west. They are also on the back from the west end to cat harbor.
LIVE SQUID is a must have bait to catch these yellowtail.
Plenty of Barracuda along the front and they are being stupid and chewing on anything. Calico Bass fishing is also decent with 1 in 3 a legal sized fish.

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
The Sand Bass bite is in full swing now. Mornings and twilight times are producing outstanding action on mainly 3 to 5lb Bass with a few each day being big fat monsters close to 10lbs.
This bite is hot on the Anchorage, a couple miles SW of Queens gate. They are also being found on the Mud flat just below Izors reef, Out off the Power Plant and on the hardbottom on the 108 spot.
Lot’s of Barracuda around but this bit is very hit and miss. Some days you find millions of them everywhere you go and the next NOTHING.
If you find them they are going off when you chum Anchovy and throw Iron jigs like a Tady C in Black/White or a 3oz Mega bait. Kroc-o-diles are killing them too.

Dana Point to  South of Oceanside
Dorado and Yellowtail Offshore….see the offshore section for details

Calico Bass in the Kelp spots and Sand Bass on the mud flats.
Very good action on both but the shorts out number the legals by a 10 to 1 ratio.
Don’t be surprised if you see a Yellowtail or 3 flash through your chumline. For the most part they are all show and no go. They are just chasing the Anchovy’s around.
Could a tank of live squid change this??? It’s possible.
Try looking at Salt Creek, 3 Arch bay, San Mateo, San Onofre, and Barn Kelp.

Capt. Dave Hansen http://www.yoursaltwaterguide.com 1(949)374-0786 was out fishing the Barge rock area today and the group caught nearly 100 calico Bass, most released and this 50lb Black seabass.
Dave Black_7-13

Leucadia to Mission Bay
Still a fairly large volume of Squid being found through out this section of the coast.
Leucadia, Blacks Beach, Northwest Corner and Crystal Pier, just north of Mission bay all have Squid and to some extent Seabass too.
Of these spots Crystal Pier probably has the best fishing but that isn’t meant to discount the other areas.
99.9% of the Seabass are night time fish, between 2:30 and 5am Everything is on the Live Squid.
Last night the action at Northwest corner was very slow however with a zillion Kayaks and skiffs all piled up in one small area.

Locate some Squid away from the crowd and set up on it. Once you have made bait, turn your squid light off and wait them out.
Most of the bites are coming on the flyline or under a balloon with a 30 foot leader.
Use a BIG HOOK! Something like an Ahi twist 7/0 or 8/0 and pin a couple of Squid on it.
These fish are not line shy. use the 40lb test!! Some of these fish are upwards of 50/60lbs. You’ll be out gunned on 20-25lb.

32.47.58 x 117.16.58· Pacific Beach Artificial Reef – Crystal Pier

Point Loma
Decent Calico Bass fishing when you have the Anchovy. Not so good without it. Lot’s of shorts but enough legals to make it worth the effort.

Imperial Beach / TJ Flats
Lot’s of Sand Bass. You need to look around until you find a big pile up of bass or you will be wishing and not fishing.
Everything with a hook in it is working. Squid, Sardine chunks, Anchovy Plastics and even the yoyo iron.
The Magic depth is around 75 to 90 feet.
32.34.00 x 117.12.00  IB Flats
32.31.50 x 117.08.60  Bull Ring

Report from Jeremy on the RELIANCE INNOVATOR:
Fished the flats south of the border the last 2 days one full day and one half day mornings are much better still plenty on monster sand bass to catch!
We did manage to loose one nice yellow that we hooked on the live squid and balloon rig. Best water depth was right at 90 feet.

Sand bass_7-13

Report from David on the Piper Lee:
Struck out on the sand bass at IB flats. Got there right before tide change 11:30-12:30….fish had lock jaw. Fishing with my 2 small kids so it was more of a boat ride than fishing trip. Fish traps with squid tip, green, watermelon, anchovie colors. Did not get a chance to try orange and black.

OFFSHORE
Dana to La Jolla
Lots of kelps offshore from Dana Point right now. Most are empty, but 1 in 20 or so are holding some Yellowtail and DORADO. YEAH DORADO! This is ultra early for these fish to be around but conditions are perfect with clean clear 72 degree water and plenty of Anchovy around.
Dorado were also seen near the 181-182 ridge so its quite possible there is a spread of fish out there.
There is a small zone of Yellowtail kelps between the 267 and the 277.
This is by no means wide open fishing! It’s still a long shot to find the right kelp but in the coming days this will likely change as more fish move in.
Get ready!! Here they come. The time to get ready and make plans is here NOW!
The fish we know about for sure came from a kelp 6 miles due west of the point around 33.24.48 x 117.49.12.
33.23 x 117.55 kelp with Dorado
32.51 x 117.43 kelp holding a dozen Dorado (7-12)
33.13 x 117.52 Yellowtail
33.16 x 117.55 Yellowtail

Report from Kris on the Grimreefer:
Spotted Dorado 5 miles off San Onofre domes. 70 degree blue water. Tiny little paddy. Baited them put couldnt get them to bite. But they are there.

More Dana Point Yellowtail kelp paddy fish from Brett.

Bluefin

Mexico
Yellowtail, Bluefin and increasing number of Dorado are moving up the line.
Word we have is most of the local banks like the 302 are still slow but this could change very soon.

Tuna Pens
There are a number of Tuna Pens being pulled up the coast from well down below.
Should you find one of these stop and take a drift or 2 by it. some 10 to 15lb Bluefin are following them.
Were digging for some GPS numbers for these, but these things are on the move and not sitting in one spot.
If you see one get the numbers for its location and pass them in to us. Thanks!!

213 / 1010 Trench
Repost……..
Getting word of 10 to 15lb Bluefin filling into this area. Although smaller than the 30 to 40lb stuff along the beach, this grade of Tuna tends to bite much better.
There are also reports of Kelps holding Yellowtail.
The plane will be flying again this weekend and we believe that this zone will get a good looking at.

80 to 90 Miles
Yellowtail and a few Bluefin Tuna.
This kelp zone has been working north by north west about 5 miles perday and is now centered at 31.21 to 31.16 x 116.50 to 117.00.
One really good kelp was found at 31.18 x 116.58.

LIVE on the water call in from Scott McDaniels on the Sea Adventure 80 at 9:15am:
Great morning on the SA80 as we have already put over 100 Yellowtail on the boat, along with 2 Bluefin. We also have 2 Bluefins hooked up as I speak.
Great flat calm weather down here. Were roughly 81 miles from the point and have all day to fish.

180 to 220 miles
Very good to excellent fishing for 30 to 50lb Bluefin. New to this bite are some nice schools of 22 to 30lb Yellowfin Tuna. One long range boat actually scored 1 day LIMITs of Yellowfin.
This stuff is in 2 areas. One is in tight to the beach, in a 20 mile block around 29.03 x 115.09 and the upper area is roughly 29.45 x 116.30.
The word is this stuff is on the move to the north.
Sounds Great to us!!

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·

BAIT REPORT
San Diego Bait Barge 6-8″ Sardine & 4-6″ Anchovy
Mission Bay Bait Barge 6-8″ Sardine & 3-5″ Anchovy
Dana Point Harbor Bait Barge 4-5″ Anchovy

Hermosa Beach
The beat goes on……
3am last night the Seabass bit again with a decent number of 30 to 50lb Seabass being boated.
33.52.09 x 118.25.23  Hermosa Hard Bottom
33.51.22 x 118.24.80  Hermosa Beach Artificial Reef

Santa Barbara Island / San Nicholas Island
Good weather is letting boats get here now and the Seabass fishing is really good for some and just fair for others. Both Islands only have small spots the Seabass live on and any large rush of boats puts the bite down.
If you do plan to run out this way PLEASE use extra time to be STEALTHY!! Hand over Hand that anchor down. Try hard to avoid any loud noises, like dropping a 8oz torpedo sinker on the deck.

Lots of barracuda all along the front. Yellowtail are from Arrow point and up to the west. They are also on the back from the west end to cat harbor.
LIVE SQUID is a must have bait to catch these yellowtail.
The Barracuda are stupid though and will chew on anything. Calico Bass fishing is also decent with 1 in 3 a legal sized fish.
Word is the Local skiff guys are catching Seabass around back on the standard Seabass spots from Church to China.

Reports are few and far between but those we have got say the Seabass fishing is pretty good up the Backside from Lost Point up to the Dunes. Squid can also be found at the Dunes and in the Cove. Some Yellowtail are being found in the cove on the Squid and at China Point.
The Mary Claire is now at the Island and is parked in the cove with a load of Squid for sale.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
WIDE OPEN Sand bass fishing this morning! Most of them are really good quality fish too. Very few short bass with most in the 3 to 5lb class and a few MONSTER Bass pushing upwards of 8 to 10lbs.
Everything is working on them. Anchovy’s Sardines, Squid, Plastics and even the yoyo Iron.
The Native Sun checked in with a report of FULL limits just before 9am!! Guys, thats about as good as it gets. Time to go is RIGHT NOW!!
This bite is happening just about 1.5 to 2 miles SW of the Queens gate on the big ship anchorage area

Over on the Horseshoe guys are seeing the yellowtail again and on some days the Barracuda go off big time. Other days you would swear there isn’t any Barracuda around at all.
33.39.87 x 118.13.50  Horseshoe South
33.40.00 x 118.13.34  Horseshoe North

33.37.35 x 118.03.64  108 spot
33.37.30 x 117.59.87  Power Plant

Dana Point to Oceanside
Dorado!! (See the offshore section below)

Sounds like a broken record…… Very good Calico Bass fishing at nearly any kelp bed as long as you have Anchovy to chum with. Lot’s of short bass though.
Our advise is to get away from the concentration of boats. Find a thick kelp spot away from everybody and wiggle back into the kelp. Throw some Anchovy into the kelp and fish the bass with a big swimbait.
Best rig is 50 to 65lb braid and a short 40lb fluro leader. We say this heavy because your going to have to saw that big bass out of the kelp and this is the type of gear to do that with.

Still a Yellowtail or 2 are being seen daily and a few Barracuda and Halibut are being caught this morning
Try looking at Salt Creek, 3 Arch bay, San Mateo, San Onofre, and Barn Kelp.

33.28.97 x 117.44.07  Monarch Boiler Rocks

33.19.08 x 117.31.76  Box Canyon #2
33.18.58 x 117.29.13  Barn Kelp

Leucadia Kelp
The very northern edge of the Leucadia Kelp is where the Squid guys have been working. Since the sieners can’t work on the weekends this might be a good chance to slip in there quietly overnight and pick off a Seabass?
If that fails you can fall back on some decent calico bass fishing right after sunrise.
The Squid and the Seabass have both been in roughly 70 to 90 feet.
33.04.000 x 117.18.500  Leucadia Kelp

Crystal Pier
The area is just about 1 mile north of the Mission Bay jetty. Still lots of Squid around and every night a few more White Seabass get caught.
Try hard to avoid the crowd. Try to locate a spot of squid and sit on it overnight. Let the Seabass come to you.
32.47.58 x 117.16.58· Pacific Beach Artificial Reef – Crystal Pier

Imperial Beach / TJ Flats
Still a prime location to find a school of eager Sand Bass. Most boats are finding very good action. Motor around until you find a big pile of Bass and then chum them with Squid bits and Anchovy. Once in a while semi crush a hand ful of Anchovy to make the injured. This often get’s these bass chewing.
The Magic depth is around 75 to 90 feet.
32.34.00 x 117.12.00  IB Flats
32.31.50 x 117.08.60  Bull Ring

OFFSHORE
Dana Point
It’s only July 12th and already some Dorado have been caught.
The fish we know about for sure came from a kelp 6 miles due west of the point around 33.24.48 x 117.49.12.
From there I would work out towards the 267 and then south.
There are a couple temperature breaks out at the 14 and back towards the 267 that could be holding some kelps with fish on them.
Some small yellowtail have been found on these kelps, as well. Only about 1 in 20 kelps have been holding anything so this is far from being good fishing, but at least there are some fish out here.
2pm update: The Helena scored 3 Dorado and a Yellowtail on a kelp in the area mentioned above early this afternoon 33.20 x 117.54
Dorado 7-12

Report from Garrett:
Went straight west on lake Pacific today. Second paddy at 32.51/117.43 was holding dodos. At least a dozen 8-15lbs. They seemed more interested in the shadow of the boat than us. Tried fresh dead squid, chovey on 15lb floro, swimbaits, hard baits, spreader bars…all a no go. Made our way to the ridge, ran it to the 181 then over NE to the 267 then down on a 130-140 heading in the warm water back to La Jolla. Lots of life on thr ridge. All paddies after the dodo paddy filled with chovy. Open water chovy on the ridge north of the 182. Lots of bait ready for some pelagics. Ended up with a spanish jack from a paddy and a few short cuda and a 15lb yt in la jolla lost to a seal at the northwest corner.
Glass

213 / 1010 Trench
Getting word of 10 to 15lb Bluefin filling into this area. Although smaller than the 30 to 40lb stuff along the beach, this grade of Tuna tends to bite much better.
There are also reports of Kelps holding Yellowtail.
The plane will be flying again this weekend and we believe that this zone will get a good looking at.

85 miles
Really good Kelp paddy Yellowtail fishing continues. A few Bluefin are being seen now as well.
This whole zone is pushing up about 4 to 5 miles a day.
The last center of this action yesterday was at 31.15 x 116.42. So today you might want to stop at 31.20 x 116.45ish and work south from there.
Kelps are loaded 5 miles above and 5 miles below this number.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
If you go fishing please give us a call or shoot us an email.

Report Updated: September 20, 2013 at 10:47 pm

Weather Alert
Monsoon season is here now. This means that over the next couple of days it is possible to see a Thunderstorm over the inner coastal and outer waters of SoCal.
This kind of stuff will happen from time to time over the next 2 months or so.
It will be important to keep a watchful eye on the Forecasts and an open eye while out on the water.

Gaviota
There have been some white seabass being caught here. Look for the squid nests in 70-85 feet of water. Also, look for the birds rafted up waiting for the squid to come to the surface. That is a very good sign squid is in the area.

Santa Barbara
Some white seabass have popped up in front of Vitara. It’s not wide open, but defintely something worth looking at.

Channel Islands
There has been a good catch of white seabass at Santa Rosa Island, particularly around the Eagle’s Nest area.

Hermosa Beach
Jonathon reported in with: Good morning at Hermosa…solo mission squid was a bit hard to make but a few fish were swimming through…45,31 and 28. Thanks for the report, Jonathon.
This is a good starting point for this bite. 33.52.09 x 118.25.23  Hermosa Hard Bottom

Huntington Beach
The Patriot reported in with full limits of sand bass on their 3/4 day trip today. They were fishing on the upper edge of the Huntington Flats. You can’t seem to go wrong whether you’re fishing live bait, plastics, or a jig of some sort. These fish are hungry and want to bite. Look for these fish on the meter and either drift the area if there is no taffic or sit on the anchor and start a chum line.

Dana Point
Capt. Jeff Jones reported in notifying us of some dorado that have been caught, speared, and seen 5-8 miles off the beach all the way from La Jolla to Dana Point. Not every kelp is holding fish. It is about a 1 in 20 chance of finding that magic paddy that will be holding the right kind.
Update: There have been 2 dorado caught on a kelp 6 miles outside of Dana Point. I would start in the vicinity of 33.24.48 x 117.49.12. From there I would work out towards the 14 mile bank then work down towards the 267 and then back up to your starting numbers. There are a couple temperature breaks out at the 14 and back towards the 267 that could be holding some kelps with fish on them. Some small yellowtail have been found on these kelps, as well.

Mission Beach
1 mile north of Mission Bay Jetty there is still a ton of squid to be had. Easy jigging during daylight hours and good floats come nightime. There were a few white seabass caught for the fleet last night. You can’t miss the fleet of boats, but don’t be afraid to fish by yourself if you find good conditions. Game on?

Ensenada
Louie Prieto from It’s 4 reels sent in this report from Ensenada: Wish I could say it was WFO here in Ensenada but it is not. Not yet anyway. Smooth seas and days when the barracuda bite is very good and other days when it is all show and no go. Have not heard of any local yellows in 2 weeks but on Saturday we did manage 2 yellows offshore (31.32.268/116.52.148) just south of the Banda Bank tuna pens. Also saw jumping Bluefin as well. No live bait available yet but supposedly will start to be available by the weekend. Pulled in a nice 15lb lingcod today. Also had other lings, a couple of nice reds and assorted bottom fish all caught on the iron.

Offshore
90 miles
Lots of 10 to 12lb Yellowtail has pushed up to an area inside of the Lower 500 now.
Very few fish are smaller than this
The area is centered at 31.15 x 116.42. Kelps are loaded 5 miles above and 5 miles below this number.
So far this area appears to be mostly straight Yellowtail with a few Dorado tossed in. These are the general area numbers as the trend for these fish seems to have them moving up the line about 5 miles a day.

110 to 130 miles
1.5 and 2 day Bluefin continue to hang out in this same location.
Best zone is still at 30.30 to 30.50 x 116.36 to 117.00.
smaller number of Yellowtail on kelps here but the Dorado numbers are up.

Just got this report on the Fishdope forum from WHolland about a trip he did into this zone that was posted up a few days ago. This area is still the hot spot for yellowtail on kelp paddies with a few tuna around that are not biting right now.
