White Seabass
We are coming up on the ideal moon phase for hunting Seabass.
The 3 days before and on the Full Moon are often times the very best time of the month to get them!!
This moon phase might be the last time this season that they bite too as they only rarely bite good past August 1st
If your wanting to get one this season the advise is GO NOW before its to late and you missed it for another year.

BAIT REPORT
San Diego Bait Barge 5-7″ Sardine & 4-5″ Anchovy
Mission Bay Bait Barge 5-7″” Sardine & 4-5″ Anchovy
Dana Point Harbor Bait Barge 5-7″ Sardine & 3-4″ Anchovy

Channel Islands
The White Seabass bite went wide open this morning for a couple of sportboats. The Mirage and the Pacific Islander both had over 50 seabass each as of 9am.
Early info says they are at the Eagles nest at Santa Rosa Island.
***Word of Caution*** The wind is howling big time today out of the NW. The seas are very rough and dangerous for all but the biggest vessels.
12 noon update….. The Pacific Islander has boat limts. That’s 81 seabass.

Hermosa Beach
No change here. White Seabass from 2am to 5am. 1 in 5 boats is getting them. In some cases more than 1.
It’s an all night waiting game.

SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE TONIGHT
weather permiting the Seabass have been on a good bite.
However the wind is blowing hard and looks to stay that way for several more days.

Catalina Island
Lots of Yellowtail and Barracuda are at the Island right now.
West end from Arrow Point to around the corner to Ironbound is one area to check out. Another is on the Squid grounds on the back between church and Salta verde.
There is some talk of a new batch of yellow moving in this morning and we are working on trying to verify that.

San Clemente Island
Got word the Yellowtail bite has taken off in the cove this morning. Right on top of the Squid bed. These Yellows are running from 15 to almost 40lbs and are not line shy.
Still all the Squid you need to make bait with is in the cove

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
Sand Bass and Barracuda are both on a good bite. The Sand bass in this area are the best quality on the coast right now with the Bass ranging from 3 to 8lbs. Very few fish are shorts.
Most of the Barracuda are legal fish too, but just barely, although a few 8lb logs are being caught.
The bite is in a number of locations right now.
The Power Plant, the 108, the mud just below Izors, and the ship anchorage outside of Queens Gate are all seeing great Bassing.
The morning and evening are both working fine.
Some days the Barracuda bite good followed by a bunch of days of none being seen.
Today is one of those days that the Cuda are chewing. Lot’s of them caught this morning
Yellowtail are roaming around on the Horseshoe. Some more Yellows are being seen on the 108 out in 18 fathoms.
Live Squid is a must if your going to hook one of these but there isn’t a really good chance of hooking one anyway.

The excellent C&R Calico bass fishing continues.
Only 1 in 8 bass is a legal 14 inch fish however.
water conditions are incredible. 70 degrees and very clean.
A few White Seabass showed up just outside the Harbor at the 12 fathom rock late in the evening. These were small schoolie fish around 32 inches long.
Might be more if you spend some time looking for them.

Crystal Pier remains as the spot to catch Squid for bait but it appears the Seabass are hanging out at Hill Street. Again the majority of fish are being caught at night between 2 and 5am with little caught or seen after that.
Northwest Corner has a fleet of skiffs and Kayaks out every night but reports don’t have much if any seabass being caught.
What is biting at Northwest is Barracuda. Some big scores for the long rod guys. The other big biter is Sand Bass with near limits for everybody.
Calico Bass fishing is good to but those are mostly shorts.

Imperial Beach / TJ Flats
Still very good Sand Bass fishing. The key to the bite is to locate a group of bass and anchor on it. Then keep a steady chumline of squid and finbait chopped up into little pieces. This will keep them under your boat and attract more to join the party.
Don’t just pull into the area and drop anchor just any place. You’ll be wasting your time.
The depth to look at is around 75 to 90 feet.

The Big Bonito are still here. They are under tern birds.
These bones are HUGE!!! All of them are over 10lbs with some pushing 15lbs.
No Yellows found on kelps around this area the past few days.

Early report this morning from a couple of private boats say the kelps are dry and no sign of Tuna.

Same dope……Really Good Bluefin Tuna fishing this morning on mostly 60 to 80lb Bluefin. Some schools of 35 to 50 lb stuff too.
The center of this is around 30.03 x 116.18. This is SSW of San Martin Island and can be reached on a 3 day trip.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·

SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE TONIGHT

Marina Del Rey
once again we got a couple of calls of seabass overnight. The action isn’t wide open but if you get away from the main group and find a spot of squid you stand a decent chance to get a big seabass.
The bite time is 2am to 5am. After that the only thing biting is a couple of Sand Bass and Bat Rays.
Most of the bites are coming on the flyline or under a balloon with a 30 foot leader.
Use a BIG HOOK! Something like an Ahi twist 7/0 or 8/0 and pin a couple of Squid on it.
These fish are not line shy. use the 40lb test!! Some of these fish are upwards of 50/60lbs. You’ll be out gunned on 20-25lb.
33.52.09 x 118.25.23  Hermosa Hard Bottom
33.51.22 x 118.24.80  Hermosa Beach Artificial Reef
33.51.53 x 118.25.34  Squid and Seabass area.

Report from David on the Tackle Me:
Fished Hermosa from 2am till 5am, squid was hard to make, you could only snag the stuff you could see 5-10′ down, they would not attack the jigs and seals wouldn’t let them float.
We fished while we were making squid but didn’t get any bites except for sand dabs so we headed to Catalina west cove where we hooked a few bigger fish only to have hooks pulled.
We spearfished for a little while getting a few calico s up to 5lbs but no wsb or yellow seen up to Eagle reef.
We found a school of mini macs mid channel and got 30-40 off the sabiki rigs to try to drift the wsb area, we gave it 30 mins before we decided to hit short banks where we pulled in several nice reds and 1 legal ling and many short and then headed into MDR around 3.

Report from Tony on the Hunter:
Long day on the water. Started at 7 am sat and didn’t end until 8 am Sunday.
Headed to the 172 for some shark fishing. Water was 67 to 70.
Ended up with 20 makos but none were over 4 feet oh yeah and 10 thousand giant mackerel came through so I got some more bait. .
So headed in to grab some more chum at west Marine. Got 4 buckets for the next day.
Read about the hermosa sea bass bite so headed there after the store.
Anchored up and made some squid spit on some seals and bundled up for the long night.
While waiting the radio said there would be a gale warning so I dropped the shark run out to the 175 for Sunday.
So back to the sea bass action. Or lack there of. I was attacked by sand dabs, my goodness I didn’t know they were so aggressive. Also got some short sand bass.
Anyways until next week.

weather permiting the Seabass have been on a good bite. However the wind is blowing hard and looks to stay that way for several more days.

Yellowtail fishing is improving now after a week or so of poor current and rough seas on some days.
Look on the front from Arrow point and up to the west end. Then from west cove down the back to Ironbound.
95% of these Yellows are going for the Live Squid but a few have also jumped on the surface Iron lately.
A few other reports of yellowtail are coming from scattered spots around the Island. Hen Rock area saw a few as did the Salta Verde area on the back. This spot also has a shot at a White Seabass.
Calico Bass and Barracuda are everywhere. No trouble finding either one of these fish.

White Seabass and a few very large Yellowtail are biting along the Back from China Point and up to the Dunes. One of the Yellowtail was a 58lb beast caught on the Thunderbird.
All of this action is on Live Squid which can be caught in the cove or buy it from Darrel Wilson on the Mary Claire
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
The Sand bass spawn is now in high gear with lots of big Sand bass biting.
Live Squid is the number 1 hot bait but they are chewing on almost anything. The Berkley Gulp, 6inch “New Penny” grub is killing them.
The bite is in a number of loactions right now too.
The Power Plant, the 108, the mud just below Izors, and the ship anchorage outside of Queens Gate are all seeing great Bassing.
The morning and evening are both working fine.
Still some days the Barracuda bite good followed by a bunch of days of none being seen.
Today is one of those days that the Cuda are chewing. Lot’s of them caught this morning
Yellowtail are roaming around on the Horseshoe. Live Squid is a must if your going to hook one of these but there isn’t a really good chance of hooking one anyway.

Dana Point to  South of Oceanside
Very clean and warm, 70+ degree water.
Little bit of White seabass action in the early evening last night.
Calico Bass fishing is fantastic with HUNDREDS of bass being caught everyday. Lot’s of shorts though with about 1 in 8 being a legal. Some bigger grade Bass can be found by working well back into the kelp and using big Plastics or live Squid.
Yellowtail are still being seen everyday along the kelp line and with the current conditions you might see a Dorado in the coming weeks too.
Barracuda are making a good showing today along most of the kelp beds.

La Jolla / Point Loma
The focus now is on Sand Bass and the bite is very good. Lot’s of limits being caught.
The Squid area close to Crystal Pier is one hotspot. The seabass action over night was on the slowside from the reports we got this morning.
Northwest corner is having a hot Barracuda bite this morning.

Imperial Beach / TJ Flats
The Sand Bass fishing on the flats is outstanding for many guys but some are finding the bite tough.
You HAVE TO locate a school of bass and set up on them. They won’t come and find you.
Once you get anchored up keep a steady chumline of squid and fish chunks going. Nice and slow but steady. Soon you’ll build up a cloud of bass under your boat and the bite will turn wide open.
The general area is easy to find. All the San Diego 1/2 and 3/4 day boats along with a bunch of private boaters are all fishing this bite.
The Magic depth is around 75 to 90 feet.

Dana Point
Guys are continuing to find a kelp here and there with a handful of Dorado and or some Yellowtail.
The focus is still on the 267 to the 14 Mile Bank area. Water temps over 70 degrees is where the Dorado are holding out in.

MEXICO
Coronado Canyon
Report from Mike on the Ashlea Dawn:
Tried the Mex Sand Bass bite, but not much happened.
Moved to the islands for limits of rock cod (mostly reds).
Decided to move outside 7 miles west of N Island. Hit a paddy for 1 yellow and 1 dodo.
Made for a great day on the water fishing with my daughter (she caught the dodo – 14lbs)

425 / 101
Report from Michael:
Left mission bay around 6, headed out just west of the north 9 and then pointed south toward the 425. Plan was to follow the warmer water in that area. Water was between 69 and 70 the entire distance. Found a few kelps closer to the 9 but they only seemed to have anchovies. About a mile from the 425 I started to move toward the 101, saw birds on the horizon and took a look. At first I thought it might be bluefin but ended up getting some of the biggest bonito I’ve ever seen. All fish were between 11-15 lbs.  On the way back, but near the same area, water got colder and there were a bunch of kelps but all were in 66 Deg. water and nothing home.  Not my favorite fish but a fun day and great to hear the zzzzzzz.

190 miles
Really Good Bluefin Tuna fishing this morning on mostly 60 to 80lb Bluefin. Some schools of 35 to 50 lb stuff too.
The center of this is around 30.03 x 116.18. This is SSW of San Martin Island and can be reached on a 3 day trip.

Report from Lee Mayo:
fished an area 190 miles down on the 116 line. We got into a great bite on 60 to 80lb Bluefin. We also got all the Yellowtail we wanted.

Hermosa Beach
Still going strong. This Seabass bite has been on for several weeks now and fish are being caught every night.
the bite time is between 2 and 5am with almost none caught after that. Daytime action here is almost all Sand Bass and a few 10 to 20lb Halibut.
Plenty of Squid to catch for bait and the Seabass are on the spot you make bait at. Find the Squid and fish it.

However the weather is going to turn very nasty beginning this afternoon and may last for several days.

Seabass:
Backside east is the area to look. try looking for the right conditions at the Vee’s and Salta Verde. These fish are mostly 20lb class. Nothing close to good fishing but if you put in the time and effert you chances are good you’ll get 1.
SQUID is a MUST HAVE bait. Without it go around front and chase Barracuda.
Yellowtail:
A few fish are on the Seabass / Squid grounds on the eastend back spots. These are mostly 20 to 30lb grade. No big numbers being caught though.
Up at the west end there are 8 to 12lb Yellows in much better numbers. They are on the front from Arrow and to the west and on the back at Iron Bound and the westend.
You need Live Squid for these fish too! Anchovy chum is working good to get thm into a feeding mood but they are only eating the Squid.
Barracuda and Calico Bass:
No live Squid??? These 2 fish are the ones to focus on.
The Cuda are everywhere on the front and will jump on the Anchovy and on the Iron jigs.
Calico Bass are at any kelp or rock outcropping all around the Island. Some really big bass continue to show at the west end boiler rocks on big Swimbaits.

San Clemente Island
Been a while since we got dope on what is happening out here. Please refer to the past few reports for what was happening last week.
The Mary Claire is still parked in the cove with Squid for sale.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!
Always make sure the Island is open before making the run.

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
Crazy good Sand Bass fishing. The Mornings and evening are both working great.
Very good quality to the bass in this area. Almost none of them are shorts with most running 3 to 5lb and everyday the there are a few in the 8 to 10lb class.
Live Squid is a hot bait for the BIG Bass but pretty much everything is working. Live bait, dead bait, plastics and yoyo Iron
Barracuda continue to be a hit and miss deal.
Some days you find millions of them everywhere you go and the next NOTHING.
If you find them they are going off when you chum Anchovy and throw Iron jigs like a Tady C in Black/White or a 3oz Mega bait. Kroc-o-diles are killing them too.

More Dorado and Yellowtail….. see the offshore section below.

71 to 72 super clean water from Salt creek to Barn Kelp. The Calico Bass are very eager to come out and bite! Live Anchovy is a very hot bait and the barge in the harbor has nice ones for sale.
Some Yellowtail are being seen too but these are mostly just teasing guys and not biting. They want something else. Live Squid maybe?
The conditions are so good in fact you might see a Dorado or 2 in the coming weeks right at the local kelp beds.
Try looking at Salt Creek, 3 Arch bay, Barge Rock, San Mateo, San Onofre, and Barn Kelp.

Imperial Beach / TJ Flats
Lot’s of Sand Bass. You need to look around until you find a big pile up of bass or you will be wishing and not fishing.
Everything with a hook in it is working. Squid, Sardine chunks, Anchovy Plastics and even the yoyo iron.
The Magic depth is around 75 to 90 feet.

OFFSHORE
Dana Point
More reports of Dorado and Yellowtail. Lot’s more people are out looking for them and a few are finding them.
Not all the Dorado are on kelps. Some are open water fish. Watch for the little white tern birds. They are following the Dorado. If you see them dip down and flutter above the water there is a very good chance they are looking at either Yellowtail or Dorado.
Try and work your way in front of there travel path and throw a bunch of Anchovy chum. Bait them with either a Sardine or an anchovy with only a hook. NO SINKERS.
Many of the reports are saying they see Dorado but they won’t bite. This is common with new arrivals once they settle in they will begin to bite much better.
The number of kelps isn’t all that great and most are not holding fish yet

MEXICO
Tuna Pens
There are a number of Tuna Pens being pulled up the coast from well down below.
Should you find one of these stop and take a drift or 2 by it. some 10 to 15lb Bluefin are following them.
Were digging for some GPS numbers for these, but these things are on the move and not sitting in one spot.
If you see one get the numbers for its location and pass them in to us. Thanks!!

213 / 1010 Trench and on out to the Dumper
Getting word of 10 to 15lb Bluefin filling into this area. Although smaller than the 30 to 40lb stuff along the beach, this grade of Tuna tends to bite much better.
There are also reports of Kelps holding Yellowtail.
The plane also saw spots of free swimming dorado over this entire area.

75 to 85+ miles
This kelp paddy zone is still moving up about 3 to 4 miles a day to the NNW. There continues to be a massive amount of 10 to 12lb yellowtail on them.
Now in addition to the Yellowtail there are Bluefin Tuna. Most are 35 to 60lb fish but some schools are 10 to 15lbers.
Yesterday this zone had pushed up to 31.21 to 31.16 x 116.50 to 117.00.
Today that area is up to 31.25 to 31.20 x 116.55 to 117.10
This now inside of 1 day range for the San Diego fleet
It should be mentioned that this is just the upper center of the main kelp paddy area as there are more kelps and bluefin stretched out from this point to over 100 miles.
This is a big volume of fish and they are on the move this way.
Water temps are in the 68.5 to 70 degree range so Yellowfin Tuna could also pop up at anytime.

Report from Ross on the Fin “atic”:
Left SI 4 am fri and headed south. Hit the good temp at 66 to 67 and our first paddy at 31.6 x 116.57 with hundreds of yellows on the surface. A few in the 10# but all the ones we caught and kept were over 20# We spent 2 hours and limited the boat on yellows as well we released 36. They would eat anything we threw. I caught one on my bait caster with a rainbow rapala. Headed south and worked down 156 miles from the point to 30.11 116.30 where we had are only tuna of the trip blind strike deep on the cedar plug. Fish was 42#. Water was almost 69 deep purple. Almost dark we ran to Punta Colnett and dropped the hook and ate .Weather both days was as nice as I can ever remember. We ran 45 knots on fri am for 2hrs and never had a bump. Fished sat am off Colnett for 3 Lings to 44 inchs. A bunch of nice reds as well. Started Home and hit a number of paddys around the 31.14 x 116.42 for a bunch more C&R on the yellows. Had to fuel at the Coral. Put 198 gallons in and I hold 215. Cutting it close .Ran home from there.372 total miles, tons of great fishing.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
