Weather Alert
Monsoon season is here now. This means that over the next couple of days it is possible to see a Thunderstorm over the inner coastal and outer waters of SoCal.
This morning a Thunderstorm was located outside of San Clemente Island and traveled north up to the Channel Islands.
This storm had plenty of lightning with it early but was just some showers by the time it reached the Islands.
This kind of stuff will happen from time to time over the next 2 months or so.
It will be important to keep a watchful eye on the Forecasts and an open eye while out on the water

Hermosa Beach
Good and Steady fishing for Seabass at night and then for Sand bass in the daytime.
No change in location……1/4 to 1/2 mile south of the pier
Grey Light to early Am bite. It’s all over by 9am.
Good calico bass fishing off Malibu for those interested in chasing them.

There are Yellows on both the front and backsides and on the westend too.
The regular Seabass spots from Church Rock up to China point still have Fish on them but conditions are funky.
If you find the right water, you stand a decent chance at scoring some.
Squid can be made at Mills Landing and at China Point.

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
Barracuda:
Lots of barracuda are around on the Flats and on the Horseshoe. Some days they bite and some days they don’t.
Today is one of those day that they are biting. Lots of them this morning on the Horseshoe.
They are chewing the Iron, like a Tady C single hook big time.
Sand Bass:
Look for these bass in the evenings. The bite is often excellent now.
Almost all the Bass are nice size legal fish too. 3 to 5lbers are common. Toads from 8 to 10 are possible.

Very good to excellent Calico Bass fishing. Most are still short however but if you are a catch and release guy this isn’t a problem.
Large Bass are back deep in the kelp. work back in and throw some Anchovy chum while fishing the big plastic Swimbaits. Guys doing this are catching a bunch of 4 to 6lb Calicos.
Some barracuda and some Yellowtail teasing guys at the kelp beds.
Try looking at Salt Creek, 3 Arch bay, San Mateo, San Onofre, and Barn Kelp.

Imperial Beach / Bull Ring
Flat out excellent Sand Bass fishing right at the Mexican border. The Bass are being found on both sides of the border but the best bite is in Mexican waters.
This bite is so good on quality Sandies that the 3/4 Coronado Islands boats are on the spot fishing it.
There are a few stray Yellowtail and Barracuda being caught as well.
NO Seabass caught lately.
32.34.00 x 117.12.00  IB Flats
32.31.50 x 117.08.60  Bull Ring

Not seeing much attention but there are some Yellowtail and Barracuda at the Ribbon Kelp, South Kelp and at the Rockpile.

OFFSHORE
Dana Point
72 degree water!!!!!!!!!!! OMG its only July 10th.
Dorado could be in the picture by the end of the month if this trend continues……..
Currently it is pretty quiet offshore with 1 in 20 kelps found holding a couple of Yellowtail.

Report from Kris on the Grim Reefer:
Headed out of Dana Point due south at 6am this morning looking for kelp. Water was clean and blue.
We made it about 30 miles out. Found very few paddys, all of them empty. Will be back out this weekend.

90 miles
LOT’S of 10 to 12lb Yellowtail has pushed up to an area inside of the Lower 500 now.
Very few fish are smaller than this
The area is centered at 31.10 x 116.42. Kelps are loaded 5 miles above and 5 miles below this number.
All of this stuff appears to be on the move to the north a few miles a day.
So far this area appears to be mostly straight Yellowtail with a few Dorado tossed in

110 to 130 miles
1.5 and 2 day Bluefin continue to hang out in this same location.
Best zone is still at 30.30 to 30.50 x 116.36 to 117.00.
smaller number of Yellowtail on kelps here but the Dorado numbers are up.

200+ miles
VERY GOOD TUNA FISHING!!
Most of the Long Range fleet are spending at least 2 or more days in this area.
The past couple of days this has been an afternoon thing with not much seen in the mornings.
Good scores of mixed grade bluefin centered around 29.09 x 116.01.
There are 3 grades of Bluefin Tuna down here. 30 to 50lbers, some schools of 60 to 80lb class Tuna and then some OMG, 125 to 180lb class tuna.
Little bit of Yellowfin and Dorados on kelps in the same general zone.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·

Channel Islands
SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 3 PM PDT THIS AFTERNOON
Weather is up in the areas where the seabass are hanging out and over all the bite is down.
The best weather conitions are along the beach.
Seabass still continue to show everyday however. Some at Santa Cruz and a few at Santa Rosa but the best bite is 1/4 mile south of Gaviota Pier in 60 to 70 feet.
Lots of Squid with big Seabass mixed in.
34.23.27 x 119.44.15  General Area north of Santa Barbara / Goleta Beach

Marina Del Rey
This Hermosa Seabass bite just keeps rolling right along.
No change in location……1/4 to 1/2 mile south of the pier
Grey Light to early Am bite. It’s all over by 9am.
Good calico bass fishing off Malibu for those interested in chasing them.

Catalina Island
West end spots are still the place to look for a Yellowtail. The numbers are not great but there is enough around to make it worth the look.
Backside west is still were most of the better action is happening. West Cove has Yellowtail and an odd Seabass showing up too.
The regular Seabass spots from Church Rock up to China point still have Fish on them but conditions are funky. If you find the right water, you stand a decent chance at scoring some.
Squid can be made at Mills Landing and at China Point.

Report from Jay on the Critter Catcher
Started out Sunday Morning about 5am to hit the bite off Hermosa. Tons of boats but I really didn’t hear or see a lot of action.
We kept getting destroyed by Sand Dabs…in the middle of the water column!?!
At about 8am we had enough of the crowds and the Dabs and headed towards Catalina. Went around West End and started drifting looking for the right spot.
Hooked up with something huge, fought for 30-45 minutes and brought the largest Mud Marlin I have ever seen to the boat.
Current finally cooperated a little and we still weren’t getting bit.
Dropped down to 15lb line and hooked up right away. Fish was just too strong and ended up breaking the line on a real strong run.
Had one more hook-up and one more break, pertty sure they were the right kind.(both fly-lined squirts).
Tried to see if any Butt’s were around and hooked up with the nice model, around 30 lbs. Had some live well issues and bait died mid-day.
Heard the Squid boats would be around back in the morning, so hit Avalon for a nice dinner.
Next morning checked with the Squiders and no one had anything (even Darrell, who we saw headed back in around 6am).
The backside was starting to get nasty around 8am so we decided to head back to King Harbor.
The island was also out of ice so we didn’t want the fish to spoil.
Got back and had a great Halibut dinner with a few friends.
A little quiet but a fun time on the water!
Halibut 7-9

San Clemente Island
Seabass are showing in Northwest harbor and at the Dunes. Problem is the Northwest harbor area is suppose to be off limits to everyone.
Plenty of Squid at the Dunes and in the cove to make bait with.

LA Harbor / Newport Beach
Very good Sand Bass fishing in the late afternoon and evenings. Lot’s of limits of big fatty bass. Almost all of the Bass are legal size, in the 3 to 5lb class but every night a few TOADS of 8 to 10lbs is caught.
Live Squid, if you can get it, fresh dead, and Plastics are all working. The 6 inch “new Penny” berkley glup bait is killing them.
There is also some spots of Barracuda around. Some days they bite all over the place and the next you can’t find them anywhere.

Nobody has turned in a white seabass report in quite a while here now. Looks like all these fish went north up to Hermosa.

Darrell is parked off Huntington beach again with full tanks of Squid made on Izors reef.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

Report from Ryan on the Pomaika’i:
Late report from Sunday, July 7th.
Launched in flat calm waters off Newport tanked up with squid.
Headed up the line to the Reef, Pipe, HB/ Flats zone looking for seabass rumors and also sand bass for my passengers.
No exotics found in the 70+ degree water. We could have used a little more morning current/wind to push along, but when the sandies wanted to chew it was full speed on 18-22″ fish.
No bruisers this trip, but a solid grade of fish as many anglers have been reporting. A few calicos in the mix, but no sighting’s of cuda where we were drifting in 12-14 fathoms.
One false alarm on a ray had us thinking the right kind, while another local boat went bendo on a 30# mako that was up mopping the finbait.
Lots of anchovies between power plant and the outside zone of the ‘inner rigs’. Porpoise were feeding and terns pressing from overhead.
A few sandies were suspended on the chovies, but most came to the boat with squid in their gullet. I did not cut any open to see what they eating – doubt it would be a surprise.
Boats numbered 25-30 Sunday mid morning, but everyone behaved and pounded the bass.
Wind kicked up a few notches around 12:30pm and by 13:30 the harbor flag was just about straight out.

Report from Bob Hoose:
I had some co-workers in town for ICAST, so took them out yesterday afternoon in hopes of finding some coastal calicos.
Picked up a scoop of anchovies at Newport Bait Barge – best anchovy bait I have ever seen in Newport!
We started down at #2 and got covered up by the lizard fish?  Made a short move inside and caught a bunch of johnny bass while fly lining baits into the kelp?
Worked all my usual spots for bass but could not catch one to save the trip.
Strong downhill current and lots of bird schools on anchovy from the jetty to El Morro.
Never had a single bass boil on the chum – strange afternoon on all levels.
  ~Bob Hoose

Dana Point to Oceanside
Calico Bass fishing is still very good. Lot’s of short bass along the kelp line BUT if you work back into the kelp a little bit some very large Bass are being caught. Several 8lb class Bass were caught just today.
Look at San Mateo, San Onofre, Barn and Yellowtail kelp spots.
Yellowtail are also being seen daily but are very tough to get to bite.
What is new is some nice schools of barracuda are slowly moving up the coast. They were at the Power plant a few days ago, then at the Clambeds, north of Oceanside and then San onofre late yesterday afternoon.

Dave Hansen http://www.yoursaltwaterguide.com 1(949)374-0786 called in to report he was out with a group on the “Whats In Sac”
They went looking for Mako Sharks about 3 miles off Dana Point. The seas had a big left over lump from yesterday afternoons wind and was not very nice so they came inshore to the Barge Rock area and caught 5 legal Calico’s and 2 legal Sand Bass in just 45 mins.
The water temp is 72 degrees, even after the wind. They also saw lots of Molas offshore but no kelps.

Solana Beach
Most guys have given up on this Squid area but 1 commercial skiff fishing the Seabass came in with a big haul yesterday morning.
Look for the Light boats and setup a good 1/4 to 1/2 mile away from them. Make some squid and then turn of the squid light…….
Best chance is probably from 3am to sunrise.

Crystal Pier
32.47.58 x 117.16.58· Pacific Beach Artificial Reef – Crystal Pier

Report from Sean on the Aimee’s Outrage:
Fished off Crystal Pier with Dad and good friend for seabass overnight. Got on the spot at 6 PM or so Sunday evening and metered around for squid.
Was able to jig up plenty in an hour or so and set the hook just outside the crystal pier artificial reef in 75-80 ft.
Only 2 other boats. Put out dropper loop and balloon rigs with one large jig tipped with a live squid.
No bites all night with plenty of current and kelp fouling the lines.
Weather was smooth settling down after some early evening wind and lump.
Got one bite at 5:30am or so on the jig at the bottom tipped with squid.
5-10 minutes later pulled in a 51.7 lb White Seabass on the spinner gear loaded with 65lb spectra and fluoro leader.
My personal best. No other bites. Pulled anchor hour or so later and weighed at the fuel dock.

Imperial Beach / Bull Ring
No change…….
Excellent Sand Bass fishing continues right at the Mexican border.
This bite is so good on quality Sandies that the 3/4 Coronado Islands boats are on the spot fishing it. There are a few stray Yellowtail and Barracuda being caught as well.
NO Seabass in over a week.

OFFSHORE
Great News!!
Yellowtail are suddenly making a big push north. If the current trend continues we should have local Kelp paddy Yellowtail again in the near future.
This weekend will see the first southerly push of water from now Tropical storm Erick.

90 miles
That huge mass of 10lb Yellowtail has pushed to an area inside of the Lower 500 now.
The area is centered at 31.10 x 116.42. Kelps are loaded 5 miles above and 5 miles below this number.
So far this area appears to be mostly straight Yellowtail with a few Dorado tossed in

110 to 130 miles
Still your best shot at a bluefin is down here as no volume of these tuna seem willing to make a move to the north.
Best zone is still at 30.30 to 30.50 x 116.36 to 117.00.
smaller number of Yellowtail on kelps here but the Dorado numbers are up.

200+ miles

If you go fishing please give us a call or shoot us an email.

Channel Islands
SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE TONIGHT
for Santa Rosa and San Miguel Islands

Seabass continue to show everyday.

Fish Camp at Anancapa Island. A few yellowtail
34.00.35 x 119.22.90  Fish Camp

Smugglers Cove at Santa Cruz Island. Yellowtail and Seabass. Some barracuda too.
34.01.340 x 119.32.240  Smuggler’s Cove

Beecher’s Bay at Santa Rosa Island. Seabass and a few BIG Halibut.
34 00.20 x 120 00.00  Beecher’s Bay (big area)

Marina Del Rey
Squid is at Hermosa Beach in 75′ of water 1/4 to 1/2 mile below the pier. White sea bass and halibut are with it. Grey Light to early Am bite. It’s all over by 9am.
Good calico bass fishing off Malibu for the calico guys.
Definitely take a look at Rocky Point with a tank of squid as well. The white sea bass that was on Huntington Flats is starting to move up the beach…
33.52.09 x 118.25.23 Hermosa Hard Bottom
33.51.22 x 118.24.80 Hermosa Beach Artificial Reef
33.46.260 x 118.26.320 Rocky Point 85ft
33.46.620 x 118.25.780 Rocky Point Pinnacle 25ft
33.26.330 x 118.26.120 Seabass Rock 75ft

King Harbor
5 to 6lb class bonito moved inside of King harbor. These are much larger than the normal 1 to 2lb fish that have been biting.
The Bubble hole is the hot spot and guys in skiffs, guys on the short breakwall and even some guys on the Redondo pier are catching them.

Catalina Island
The Island waters are in a funk at the moment. Strong currents or none at all is a major issue.
Yellowtail are still showing well just not biting like they have been.
Backside west is still were most of the better action is happening. West Cove has Yellowtail and an odd Seabass showing up too.
The regular Seabass spots from Church Rock up to China point still have Fish on them but conditions are funky. If you find the right water, you stand a decent chance at scoring some.
Darrell Wilson is on the backside near salta verde trying to make squid. We are unable to contact him in this location however so it is unknown if he has any squid for sale.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

San Clemente Island
Some pretty fishing for Seabass is happening on the backside of the Island. Take a look at the Dune down to Lost Point.
There is still some Squid in the Cove and in the Dunes area.
Some Yellowtail around but no big numbers right now.
32.59.46 x 118.35.37  Dunes
32.48.92 x 118.21.25  Pyramid Head
32.48.00 x 118.21.50  Pyramid Reef

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
Barracuda:
Lot’s of Cuda are around just some days they don’t want to bite very good.
They are being found on the Huntington flats to the Anchorage and over most of the Horseshoe.
Anchovy chum is a big plus to get them going, then you can catch them on the Iron.

Sand Bass:
TWILIGHT!!!!! Look for the Sandies in the evening! Lot’s of them and many of them are big fat slobs.
3 to 5lb Bass are common and several up to and over 8lbs are being caught every night.
Daytime action is much slower.
Look on the flats out in front of the Power Plant, the 108, the Anchorage outside of Queens gate and even some of the wrecks are all working.
Last night the twilight action was excellent with lots of legal sized bass up to nearly 9lb caught.
33.39.87 x 118.13.50  Horseshoe South
33.40.00 x 118.13.34  Horseshoe North

Dana Point to Oceanside
Calico Bass fishing is still very good. Lot’s of short bass along the kelp line BUT if you work back into the kelp a little bit some very large Bass are being caught. Several 8lb class Bass were caught just yesterday.
Look at San Mateo, San Onofre, Barn and Yellowtail kelp spots.
Yellowtail are also being seen daily but are very tough to get to bite.

La Jolla / Point Loma
Crystal Pier still has Squid but the reports we have say the Seabass and Yellowtail bites are slow. Boat traffic to blame for the slow bite?? Maybe.
Calico Bass fishing is good for those with the Anchovy for chum and then work well back into the kelp. The bigger Bass are stacked up here. all the little short bass are out on the kelp line.

Imperial Beach
Very good to excellent Sand Bass fishing on the IB Flats. LOT’s of limits being caught. Live and fresh dead Squid and Plastics tipped with Squid are doing the Damage.
This spread of fish extends well into Mexican waters.
Mixed in are a few Barracuda and Halibut.

Coronado Islands
Slow…………. The Tuna Pens are back. a pair of them off South Island and a couple more just above the 425 and heading for the Island.
Squid can be found at 32.25.6 x 117.12.3. Could the Seabass and Yellowtail have found this Squid?? It might worth a look.

OFFSHORE
Still NO Albacore. Not a single fish has been caught by anybody yet. No 1.5 day or Long Range boat or Private vessel.

Dana Point
1 kelp 8 miles due west of the point was found to be holding about a dozen Yellows.
The vast majority of kelps continue to be dry however.

43 fathom / 181 / 182
This area got looked at for kelp paddy Yellows. Plenty of kelps and no Yellows

213 / 1010 Trench
Spotter plane saw kelps with Yellowtail in this sector. No boats that we know of came out and fished it though.

Butterfly
Report from Harold on the Hystix:
Not much to report just some water temps. Drove out to the 43 and down toward the fly. Water temps ranged from 67-68 to 70 at the 43 proper. Kelps dry some had dogs on them.

110 to 130 miles

Best zone is inside of this box… 30.30 to 30.50 x 116.36 to 117.00.
The numbers of Yellowtail is thinning out now. Most kelps are only hold a few dozen instead of hundreds.
More Dorado are showing now though.
Good volume of 30 to 40lb Bluefin are around. Some 10 to 15lb Bluefins are now being seen as well as some 60 to 80lb Tuna.
Most are hanging out a 1/4 mile or so from a kelp, so long drifts off of a kelp is in order.
Lastly a few small schools of 15lb Yellowfin are being found on rare occasions.
Check out this Dorado caught on the Tribute yesterday
Tribute Dodo_7-8

200+ miles
Good scores of mixed grade bluefin centered around 29.09 x 116.01.
There are 3 grades of Bluefin Tuna down here. 30 to 50lbers, some schools of 60 to 80lb class Tuna and then some OMG, 125 to 180lb class tuna.
Little bit of Yellowfin and Dorados on kelps in the same general zone.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
