Report Updated: September 20, 2013 at 10:50 pm

Weather Alert!
High winds and the threat of the same has kept most guys off the water today.
Gale warning are up for most of the northern areas and the islands.
Strong winds overnight inshore rolled over the water almost everywhere.
Not surprising, reports coming in are few and far between.
The is some good news though…..The coming weekends forecast is outstanding with almost no wind anywhere including the Channel Islands and the offshore Tuna grounds to the south.

Here is something that might interest some of you guys who make video’s or are thinking about gtting a GoPro
gopro

Channel Islands
GALE WARNING IN EFFECT THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING
All blown out today. This includes the coast.
All of the sportfishing landings canceled thier trips today.

Catalina Island
This has been the place to be for a White Seabass. This morning saw a break in the wind, at least down at the East End, and the Seabass were still biting.
The wind is likely going to blow hard this afternoon however

San Clemente Island
GALE WARNING IN EFFECT THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING
Always make sure the Island is open before making the run.
Island schedule

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
Pretty quiet around this area today. A couple guys out fishing the Rockfish on the Southeast bank are seeing a few small spots of Barracuda.
At 10am the wind was already up to 10-12mph and some white caps were starting to build up.

1PM Update: The Barracuda bite is turning on…..finally. Some good catches are being made today. The fish are up under the birds chasing schools of bait.

Dana Point
Weather along this part of the coast is actually pretty good today.
Some interesting stuff being seen too. A kelp was located roughly 6 miles right out in front of the San Clemente pier that was holding about a dozen Yellowtail. These fish ignored the big Sardine the guys had for bait but at least there are a few Yellowtail back on kelps again.
Rockfish are biting good at Box canyon on the 240 foot deep rocks and the Calico Bass are biting good at both barn and Yellowtail kelp spots. 95% of the Bass continue to be shorts but there is plenty of them.

La Jolla / Point Loma
Much slower Calico Bass fishing this morning. The wind blew hard over night and rolled the water over. The temps dropped a few degree’s and the color went from blue to green.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·

Channel Islands
GALE WARNING IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE THURSDAY NIGHT
East end of Anacapa Island was on fire yesterday as lot’s of boats got into great White Seabass action.
This bite might not live long however as Gale Warning’s are posted for the area today through Thursday night.
Most if not all trips are canceled today due to weather.

Gale Warning has everybody tied up to the dock. Swells are huge and blowing over the breakwall at King Harbor.
Except for a couple of big Halibut up off Santa Monica yesterday, It’s all just Rockfish.
Maybe the barracuda will be around after this wind goes away?

Catalina Island
GALE WARNING IN EFFECT FROM NOON PDT TODAY THROUGH THIS EVENING
Fantastic White Seabass fishing on the backside down near the east end. Church Rock to Silver Canyon was/is the target zone. The bite has been primarily an late afternoon / evening event, but yesterday and again today, some good action was seen in the early morning.
The wind is forecast to blow big time though beginning around noon today. Just going to have to wait and see what the effects of this gale will have on the bite.
Darrell will not be at the Island until Friday at the earliest. He is installing a new generator right now.

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
Big Sand Bass is the headline story right now. The big ship anchorage just outside of Queens gate has lot’s of 3 to 10lb sand bass out in the mud. The Fish are beginning to show spawning colors and the males are coming up squirting all over everything.
Fresh Dead Squid on a lead head is working good. Plastics are working good too. Twilight is the best time of day, by far
A few large Barracuda are also showing up in this area.
Buoy #1 continues to be the spot for a chance at a Yellowtail. The chances are small and getting smaller though.

Dana Point to  South of Oceanside
Short Calico Bass continue to be the star attraction. Lot’s of them at just about any kelp bed you stop at. Chum some Anchovy and they come racing out of the weeds.
Some White Seabass are showing in the late evenings. Look for these up at Salt Creek, down at San Mateo and the Barn Kelp. This bite is far from being good but it is good enough to get the Helena out of Dana Wharf Sportfishing to start running 5pm to 5am Seabass trips. The last couple of trips have hooked a few Seabass but they have yet to deck a fish.

Report from Richard on his boat Irene:
Fished the Camp Pendleton coast kelp today, below the Yellowtail kelp. Current was running up and in water was 69 to 70 degrees. The calico bass were willing biters on anchovies. From 0900 to 1200 we caught over 60 mostly in the 10 to 13 inch range, only managed 3 keepers out of all that fishing. But great C&R.

La Jolla / Point Loma
Slow action this morning. The current has switched around to running up and in. Some Calico Bass action happening but not like in days past.
Just has it has been the better calico Bass fishing is on the Point Loma Kelp bed.
There was talk of some Barracuda down on the IB flats over the weekend but we don’t have any confirmed catches of any.
Small rockfish are still available for those wanting to load up on something to take home to eat.

Coronado Islands
Conditions are making a turn for the worse with strong wind forecast to begin blowing by afternoon. This morning is a bit on the sloppy side and doesn’t look to get any better for a few days.
Barracuda have taken over as the primary biter at the Islands now as the numbers of Yellowtail appear to be dwindling.
Still some Yellows are being found in the same locations as the past few days. Nothing really has changed.
The Bigger models are at North Island, mainly at the southern tip and again in the lee up near the point. The fish here are 20 to 30lbs mostly.
The Middle grounds area, the water is streaky and mixed up with warm and cold bands running through it. Not much happening.
South Island spots have a little bit better numbers but the fish are mainly 6 to 10lbs. Lot’s more Barracuda biting now and add in some really BIG Bonito.
Take a look at the Ribbon and 5 Minute Kelp spots for Yellow and Barracuda. The Lighthouse, South Kelp and the Ridge for the Bonito along with Yellowtail and barracuda.
The Rockpile is seeing mainly just Barracuda.

OFFSHORE
Dana Point
The area offshore of Dana down to off San Onofre from 3 to 10 miles, got looked at by a few boats this morning. No kelps with yellowtail found. The seas are on the bumpy/sloppy side but not much wind…..yet.

425 / 101
Report from Michael on the Temecula Bankrobber:
My buddy Scott and I fished the 425 after cruising through the Coronados yesterday morning around 6am. Didn’t see much there so decided to fish the 425 for paddies.
Had the entire area to ourselves the whole day. Fished five paddies for nada then hit a stretch of them for the next hour or so where they all has YT on them.
After 10:30 until about 1:00 had real trouble seeing any more paddies so slow trolled sardines which led to another couple of hookups. I wish now we had been slow trolling sardines the entire time we were trolling various feathers and lures for nada earlier.
Between 1 and 2 found another paddie holding and boated another fish. Went 2 for 7 with one out of the five being lost to a seal. I lost my first three where the fish just came unbuttoned didn’t lose my hook. Changed my hook after the first two times, from circle to j hook and still lost one more same way. It was a bit strange as I have never had that happen before.
Fortunately seals were not generally a problem being few and far between.
Average size we caught were about 20-25 pounds. The one lost to seal was a larger model.
Overcast much of the morning but visibility was incredible. Could still see San Diego skyline from down past the Coronados in the morning.
Water was very choppy near the islands from waves bouncing off them.
Water out on the 425 was relatively calm and flat most of the day with some larger swells once in a while. I didn’t worry about water temps was just looking for paddies.
Last paddy of the day which was less than 2 miles south of the Coronados was huge Greyhound bus size.
Lots more fish around but we had to go so left and back on the trailer by 3:30pm and on the way home.
Sardines we used were medium to larger models and incredibly did not lose one bait in the bait tank all day.
We fished light line 25lb floro and small hooks.

FishDope – thanks for the tip from the previous day. This was my second trip out to the area, went to the Coronados last weekend for nada. Real happy to be fishing paddies this early in the season.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
