Channel Islands
The East end of Anacapa Island at the Arch and the Ormond Power Plant are the spots to hit for a White Seabass but now a 3rd spot is working too. This one is the Salmon area out near Arco Island.
Guys working this spot with the cannon ball / flasher rig are finding a few Salmon near balls of bait. The fish are hanging under the bait. Find the depth with your meter and get a bait down to that depth. Mixed in with the Salmon are some Tanker Seabass and some big barracuda.

Catalina Island
2 Tournaments going on at the Island today is keeping new info hard to get. Guys are not wanting to say what they have or where they got it, at least for now anyway.
Lot’s of Barracuda with a mix of Yellowtail continue to show along the front side of the Island. Most of the signal is now up west of Gibraltar.
No new word on the stuff out in 30 fathoms east of Hen Rock.
Nothing new to report about the White Seabass bite on the back from Church Rock to Silver Canyon. This is, no doubt, due to the Tournaments
The Long Beach Carnage is parked at Avalon with “plenty of Live Squid”
Darrell is not at the Island but is working to get the boat back online ASAP.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

ISLAND schedule

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
Last nights twilight fishing was pretty good with a mix of big Sand bass, a few Barracuda and some sculpin. The action is taking place from the Ship Anchorage to Izors reef in 15 to 18 fathoms.
This morning as of 10am the guys are working this same zone. Mostly just Sculpin so far but a few large Barracuda have been boated. Most of the boats are turning over from fishing the bottom to hunting for the barracuda now.
The location is the same as the twilight trips. The Barracuda are being found on meter marks mostly and then caught on the Iron lures like an Ironman #3 in Blue/white, a Kroc-o-dile or a 2oz Anchovy colored Mega Bait.
Not many Yellowtail left around the Buoy #1 but some Barracuda, Sand Bass and Sculpin are still biting.
Calico Bass are showing at the wall in the evenings for a few wallbangers and they are also showing on some of the rockpiles out over the Horseshoe Kelp.

Dana Point to Oceanside
Yellowtail and legal sized Barracuda have moved into the local kelp beds now. Yellows are being seen and some caught at Clemente Kelp, San Mateo Kelp, San Onofre Kelp, and at the Barn Kelp.
Most of these yellowtail are in the 6 to 8lb class with a couple fish pushing the 12lb mark. 95% or greater are being caught on live Sardines.
Slow trolling the kelp line would probably work really good right now. Just remember to stay out of other boats chum lines and anchor lines. Lot’s of kelp along the section of the coast. Find an area with very few boats and work it.
Then of course there is the Calico Bass which is outstanding for mostly short fish. Great C&R fishing though.
If you can get some Anchovy the bite goes CRAZY! Word is the bait barge only has big Sardines right now though.

La Jolla / Point Loma
Yellowtail and Barracuda are biting this morning. The kelp just below the Cove is holding both.
Most of the Yellows are the 6 to 10lb stuff but a few larger 20lb plus models are also being hooked.
Actually some Yellowtail are scattered all up and down the kelp beds from Point Loma up to Northwest Corner

Coronado Islands
Nothing new to report. More Barracuda than anything else right now.
The Islands need a new influx of Yellowtail. North Island, mainly at the southern tip and again in the lee up near the point. The fish here are 20 to 30lbs mostly.
South Island spots have a little bit better numbers but the fish are mainly 6 to 10lbs.
Take a look at the Ribbon and 5 Minute Kelp spots for Yellow and Barracuda. The Lighthouse, South Kelp and the Ridge for the Yellowtail and Barracuda.
The Rockpile is still seeing mainly just Barracuda.

Evening Update:
NEW schools of Yellowtail moved into the islands during the day turning a slow bite into a pretty good bite for some boats. The Malihini got 70 yellows, Mission Belle got 30, and the San Diego got 28.
Not everybody got them however. Several Private boaters returning early didn’t see or catch much
This group of mixed grade Yellowtail turned on in the early afternoon at the Rockpile but later spread up into the Islands proper.
Excellent sea conditions today may have played a role in all of this too.

OFFSHORE
Newport to San Onofre
A couple of kelps found up above Dana and off of Laguna about 8 miles, that were holding a few Yellowtail. Most of the kelps are dry though

A pair of kelps about 1/4 mile apart from each other are holding Yellowtail. They were centered at 33.20 x 117.40 and drifting northward.

Mexico
The Tribute is out on a 1.5 day trip and as 10:30am has 35 Yellowtail and they are seeing some Tuna Jumpers. NO tuna landed yet however.
Watch for updates on this later.

Report from Capt. Chris Randal on the Chief:
the Sho-gun is down around 200 miles (206 to be exact) this morning on the first day of an 8 day and they have 4 Bluefin up to 50lbs on the deck with 3 hanging along with 1, 25lb Yellowfin and a Dorado.
The Pacific Voyager called in this morning with 51 Yellowtail on the deck in the 8 to 12lb range down around 90 miles.
There are a couple of boats looking further off shore for Albacore and I hope they find them.
The Top Side inspection went well with only a couple of easy fixes so we are gearing up the boat to go fishing this Thursday night. I will let you know if any hot news comes my way.
Call H&M Landing @ 619 222-1144 and tell them you want to book a trip on the CHIEF

Shogun Update: Capt Aaron found more schools of Bluefin in the afternoon. They have 3 over 100lbs on the boat along with fish ranging from 25 to 50lbs. All total they put 45 Bluefin on the boat today along with 13 YELLOWFIN Tuna and a Handful of Dorado.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
If you go fishing please give us a call or shoot us an email.

Catalina Island
Good News and Bad news
1st the good, Catalina is on fire. White Seabass on the backside from Church Rock up to Silver canyon. This bite is now showing signs of fading out however. It’s been a good week of excellent action which is uncommon when it comes to Seabass.
The New Moon Phase is coming up soon though and this could very likely rekindle the bite. Still a good chance of finding one to bite right now. You will need to have either LIVE or very fresh dead Squid for this.
More good news is the Yellowtail bite has come back to life. The 6 to 8lb Yellows are mixed with Barracuda and being found under bird schools in 30 fathoms EAST of Hen Rock. Example of this bite came Yesterday with the Freelance scoring 21 yellowtail and 19 Big Barracuda for just 8 passengers
Now for the “bad” news……There are 2 tournaments at Catalina tomorrow. 1 of them a divers event.

The Pacific Carnage is parked at Avalon with “plenty of Live Squid for sale”
The Mary Claire should be there as well if all goes as planned
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

San Clemente Island
Will likely get looked at really good this weekend. With all the boat traffic expected at Catalina this might be the place to be.
Yellowtail were last seen at China Point and in the Cove. There is also plenty of Squid in the cove as well. However it is always a good idea to get some first before coming out here. Your a very long ways away from getting some if your unable to make bait here.

ISLAND schedule

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
Barracuda baby!! Very good fishing out near the rigs for large barracuda. Many of these are in the 8lb class with some much bigger than that.
Blue/White Iron like the Ironman #3 cast out and allowed to sink deep and then wound back in at a 45 degree angle is resulting in almost a cuda on every cast.
Down in the Newport area Calico Bass have turned on big time at the Newport Reef! Some guys are even scoring limits of LEGAL sized Bass. This spot also has a shot at a BIG Tanker Seabass in the late evening and over night hours

Dana Point to Oceanside
Yellowtail along with a few legal sized Barracuda, have moved in the local kelp beds. Almost every kelp bed from Barn kelp up to Salt Creek has Yellowtail on it. Middle Kelp and the Clemente kelp beds might have the best numbers.
Bait is HUGE Sardines, 14 inches long! With some better bait this area might explode soon.
The Calico Bass bite is fantastic but for mainly shorts.
White Seabass are around. Salt creek has some living in the kelp. Same for down a San Mateo kelp. Divers reported seeing them at both spots. No Squid around here right now so try and get a few Mackerel for bait.
Your best chance is high tide, in the dark and nobody else around and your being VERY QUIET! Good Luck!
The Helena is now running overnight Seabass trips 5PM to 5AM for $100. Limited to just 7 passengers

Offshore
Report from Chuck on the Finseeker:
Lack of Paddy fish. Did the offshore loop DP to below the 267, ran in to 7 miles off the San Onofre then back up to the point. 3 Paddies, none holding, very little bait. Best looking water 4 miles below and slightly outside the 267. Most life (bait/birds 4-6 miles SSW of DP. SST pretty accurate with whats out there.

Carlsbad
Dave reported in from Carlsbad after fishing sharks off the Power Plant today.
There is a tempertaure break that goes from 68 to 70F with a clean water break. Lots of bait around in the area along with dolphin and sea lions.
Dave went 1 for 5 on 100lb grade mako sharks in this zone. He was trolling bait-o-matics in various colors with mackerel pinned on.
The bite was good around 2pm then shut off for the rest of the afternoon.
Weather was beautiful.

La Jolla / Point Loma
Some nice grade Yellowtail are once again roaming up and down the area. They were down off the College in the morning and up off the NW corner by late afternoon.
This isn’t a big volume of fish but enough to make it worth looking for them.
There also are plenty of Calico Bass wanting to play at nearly any kelp bed. If you have some Anchovy to chum with it can get pretty darn good. Problem is 95% are just short of the legal size of 14 inches.
Still its great action for Catch and release fishing. Schools of large Green Mackerel are showing up as well. You might see millions of them or none at all. Just depends on where they are at any given moment.

EVENING UPDATE:
Yellowtail and Barracuda really turned on at the Northwest corner today with the best bite coming in the afternoon.

Coronado Islands
NO CHANGE…..
Yellowtail fishing is fair at best. A few guys get them while most don’t. The Bigger models are at North Island, mainly at the southern tip and again in the lee up near the point. The fish here are 20 to 30lbs mostly.
South Island spots have a little bit better numbers but the fish are mainly 6 to 10lbs. Lot’s more Barracuda biting now and add in some really BIG Bonito.
Take a look at the Ribbon and 5 Minute Kelp spots for Yellow and Barracuda. The Lighthouse, South Kelp and the Ridge for the Bonito along with Yellowtail and barracuda.
The Rockpile is seeing mainly just Barracuda.
Slow trolling a live Sardine away from the crowds is a good bet.
If the Islands are to crowed consider running out to the 425 and look for kelps. Yellowtail in the 15lb class have been out there and showing steady for about a week straight now.
32.26.85 x 117.18.23  Pukey Point

32.17.00 x 117.09.50  Rockpile #2

Ensenada
Good fishing for Yellowtail and barracuda continues at Todo Santos Island. A good way to get them is trolling Xraps and Rapalas as there still is no live bait available.
The pics are from Gary of the catch they made at the Island yesterday

OFFSHORE
Another weekend of exploratory trips will be heading out in search of Albacore and Bluefin Tuna. This weekend the weather forecast is much better than last week and with the good calm conditions they should be better able to spot jumpers from a good distance away. Finding Kelp paddies is easier too.
Look for something interesting to happen. It’s just about the right time for the first fish to show.

The last info from offshore was from last weekend with Yellowtail and Big Bonito on the Hidden bank.
Lot’s of Yellowtail on kelps 10 miles off Santo Tomas and more of them found to at least 25 miles west of there.

Chances are high that additional areas will be looked at with all this good weather coming.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
If you go fishing please give us a call or shoot us an email.

Santa Cruz Island:
SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 3 PM PDT THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH THIS EVENING
Anacapa Island and the Ventura Coast:
Sloppy but fishable…4 feet at 9 seconds…
The East end of Anacapa at the Arch was the last known location of any White Seabass action. It was a very good bite before the wind storm. We’ll have to wait and see hope this affected the bite though.
Watch for an update.

Lot’s of Rockfish and not much else. Still waiting on the Barracuda. They are over due now. There are fish right around the corner at the Horseshoe so things could change at any moment.
Some Halibut up just north of the Santa Monica Pier in roughly 55 feet. This bite has been mostly for the die hard Halibut guys who really know the area well. Very few, if any for the private boater who doesn’t know the spots.

Catalina Island
The following report does a great job of summing up the Seabass action at Catalina right now….

Report from Aly Ha on his Striper:
We departed 5am from Seal Beach heading to San Pedro Bait barge after I spoke with Mike yesterday to reserve me a scoop of squid also we picked up half scoop of healthy dines since I got 2 bait tanks on my boat.
There will be no live squid for sale as the Long Beach carnage will not be over the island today.
Straight ahead 25 miles to Church Rock East of island. First 10 miles out little rough confuse sea after that we managed comfortable 25knots.
When we get to Church Rock only we saw Freedom sport boat no one around we fish there for 30 minutes and it was quiet.
Then we moved further to east. Here are the sea’s were very rough on the back side. Very uncomfortable to anchor.
Drifting until I found good meter mark with current then I anchored it anyway..
we drop all 4 rods, within few minutes my wife’s reel started to scream. She fought it for 10 minutes, turns out to be a Yellowtail.
Then right after that 3 rods got bent this time we all thought it was a school of Yellowtail.
We all fight for good 20 minutes trying not to get these lines tangle and help to galf each other fish.
These are right kind!!They weighed 35 to 40 lbs, measuring 48 inches in lenght. They are all about the same size.
We got them on deck within half hour.
We got our limit wsb now so we just want to get yt bite, but again instantly all hooked up big time. These are all wsb one after another release my sonar fish finder was full of life.
No private boats, no sportboats, no one around, only us ..
Unbelievable experience with wsb wfo for the first time in my life!
We headed home very early, before noon, before white caps and high winds by 1pm.
The ride home is smooth at 30 knots.
Happy first wsb limit for this season ..Go get them now at East side depth 70 ft look for meter mark then anchor and wait.
Thanks and good to be a member with Fishdope.
Will support you guys all the way after few days reading the reports with gps cord# for the first time wsb wide open for me in my life.
Cut down to short chase for species that I want..

Seabass from Ensenada to Santa Barbara
Coastal Seabass are biting right now….
The Seabass are scattered up and down the coast with lots of opportunity to get on a spot by yourself.
Pick an area on the coast to work and find the bait in the area. That is where you want to be.
Fish the edges of kelp where you find spots of mackerel, sardine or squid. Dead sticked heavy jigs and dropper loops have been working the best with mackerel or a fresh dead or live squid.
The fish have been active very short times of the day or night, usually around the top of the high tides.
The average size inshore has been 40 to 60lbs and 40-60lb test is getting bit.

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
Barracuda and Big Sand Bass are the story. The Sand Bass are beginning to wander out onto the mud flats at the far upper end of the Huntington Flats and the big ship anchorage out in front of Queens gate. 15 fathoms seems to be the key depth.
Motor around until you find a pile up of Bass on your meter and anchor up on it. Chum them with bits and pieces of Squid and fin bait. This should get them into a biting mood so you can fish them with a Squid pinned on a leadhead or a plastic swimbait.
Barracuda are also in this area and are finding the guys fishing the Sand bass. The Cuda are finally starting to bite good. they have been around on the Horseshoe for a couple of weeks now, just not biting.
Some schools are working spots of finbait too. You can find these by looking for the birds and jumping cuda.
The fish are ranging from just legal to some whopper sized 10lb+ models
The Iron tossers are getting them with the Ironman #3 in Blue/white, the Tady AA and Tady C in black/white and 1oz Kroc-o-diles
Buoy #1 continues to be the spot for a chance at a Yellowtail. The chances are small and getting smaller though.
Down in the Newport Beach area, the Newport reef is one of these coastal Seabass spots worth having a look at. Conditions are good for some fish to be there right now.

Dana Point to Oceanside
Calico Bass continue to be the main catch. Most are still shorts but it is LOT’s of action!
Some guys are finding schools of small Barracuda at times, but so far no numbers of Legal Barracuda have been seen or caught.
You might find a 10lb class Yellowtail in the local kelp. Middle kelp and San Mateo are seeing a few of these almost daily but most are show and no go.
White Seabass are prowling around some of the local kelp beds too. There are both little guys and some big Tankers. Most of these are being found at night.
Salt creek, Clemente kelp, San Mateo, and Barn kelp spots are all good spots to hunt for 1.
Enough of them have been caught lately to get the Helena out of Dana Wharf to start 5pm to 5am seabss trips.
The cost is $100. and is limited to 12 passengers. Call Dana Wharf sportfishing to reserve a spot

OFFSHORE
Still some kelps being found that hold a few Yellowtail. The fish have had lockjaw the past few days though. It might be due to the HUGE Sardines being sold at the bait receiver in Dana Harbor.
About 1 in 15 to 20 kelps is holding anything and the one’s that are, have less than a dozen fish on them.
The zone is off San onofre out about 5 to 10 miles off the beach.

Report from James on his 20ft Skipjack:
long day on the water!! 2 of 10 kelps holding yt today – NONE OF WHICH wanted a sardine. 1st paddy had 5, second had 2. sardines were huge. I have to give a HUGE shout out to the guys in the 25 parker that called us on this paddy. It wouldn’t take their bait, so they let us come jump in.. turns out there was a hook and about 3ft of leader hanging off his lip… all in all, lots of fuel, beautiful day, dinner. I hope you guys on the parker got your wsb tonight!!

Point Loma
A few BIG yellowtail made an appearance along the Point Loma Kelp this morning and at least 1, 30lb class fish was boated.
Mostly though the fishing is all about short Calico Bass. Only about 1 in 10/15 is a legal 14 inch fish.
Lot’s of Green Mackerel showing as well. Great fun for the kids, not so much for everybody else.

Coronado Islands
Yellowtail are getting harder and harder to come by. The Islands need a new influx of fish, before it turns on good again.
The locations remain the same as it has been for a while now.
North island, mainly on the lee side, is where most of the larger 20 to 30lb models are hanging out.
South Island has most of the smaller grade fish with only a few big models around.
Barracuda are pretty thick now. Lot’s of them running around the Ribbon kelp, 5 Minute Kelp, The Lighthouse Kelp, and South Kelp. The Rockpile also has very good numbers of Barracuda but not much else.
There is also the chance of running into some very large Bonito. Most are in the 10lb class with some even larger than that. These are mainly on the Southern end of the South island and spread down to SKR.
Not to far south of the Islands between the 425 and the 101 spots some kelps have been found with 15 to 20lb yellows on them. This stuff has been sticking around this area for several days now.

Report from Jason on the Castin’ Crew:
Got down to the Coronados around 8 yesterday morning. It was pretty rough, but not as bad as expected. Headed to Ribbon Kelp and soaked for a couple hours fly and bottom fishing. Just before 10 landed a 12 lb. yellowtail fly lining dines. After about 45 minutes decided to head towards 71 then 425 looking for paddies after about four we went 3 for 3 landed a couple 15 lbs. on a good size paddy (also sardines). It took some doing, but we found what looking for.

It just about the right time for the first fish to show.
