Channel Islands
Pretty darn good fishing for the month of June!
The bites at Anacapa around the arch died off somewhat with only a small handful caught but the Coast is doing good.
Seabass and Squid are at the Deep hole, The county line area has slowed but up at the Ormond Power plant that bite is still happening.
Yellowtail are out numbering Seabass right now with Yellows at Blue and Yellow Banks at Santa Cruz Island. Squid is a Christy’s Bay
Santa Rosa has Squid at Beecher’s Bay and you have a shot at a Seabass and a Large Halibut there.
Currently Ciscos has a supply of Live Squid for sale.
You can also Call Tim Athens on the Squid Boat Outer Banks (805) 987-6259 for bait availability and location

Redondo Beach
Finally something to talk about. Yellowtail and Seabass both are now showing at Rocky point. These Seabass are running from just short to about 10-12lbs
It appears that more fish are moving into the area as well. Calico Bass, which only 1 in 10 is legal are providing action between the Yellow and seabass bites.
Bonito are still in King Harbor, jumping on the splasher rigs for guys on the Breakwall and the guys in skiffs are getting them with fly lined Anchovys. There has even been a couple of Yellowtail caught near the bubble hole.

Catalina Island
Almost any place you go around the Island you have a decent shot at Yellowtail, White Seabass, Barracuda and Calico Bass.
2 of the better yellowtail zones are west of Gibraltar up to the west end on the front. And on the Back side they are roaming over the Squid beds from the Vee’s up to Freddie’s.
Seabass are mostly on the back in the same areas they have been, from Church Rock to Silver Canyon. Haven’t heard much about the middle of the back except for some Squid at Ben Weston.(stay out of the Farnsworth MPA)
Barracuda are roaming around almost everywhere right now, but the better areas are where the Yellowtail are and add in the Slide and Palisades areas.
Calico Bass…… Find any kelp bed. Calicos are on it. They are still on the Boiler rocks too if you want a shot at a BIG one.
Right now there is no Squid for sale at the Island. The Mary Claire is still down for repairs. Darrell tells me that he should be back to the island by the weekend for sure.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

LOT’S of Yellowtail at the Island right now! Tommy on the Eldorado scored 26 yellowtail early this morning before the Navy showed up and kicked them out of the Cove. The navy has closed off all the good yellowtail spots now for the next several days.
To pick up the slack the guys are whacking the Calico Bass and a pretty good number of Lingcod as well.

LA Harbor – Horseshoe Kelp
Don’t let the counts fool you. Barracuda are still around in good numbers. They are just roaming around a bunch and not really eager to bite when you find them.
Sand Bass fishing is ranging from a slow pick during the day to some really good fishing in the evenings. Today however the morning bite was EXCELLENT with many boats catching limits of  Big Sand Bass.
The action is taking place from the Ship Anchorage, outside of Queens Gate to Izors reef in 15 to 18 fathoms.  A 1 1/2oz Leadhead with a fresh dead Squid is the killer bait for a BIG fat Sand Bass.
The Barracuda are being found on meter marks mostly and then caught on the Iron lures like an Ironman #3 in Blue/white, a Kroc-o-dile or a 2oz Anchovy colored Mega Bait.
Some Yellowtail are still around the Buoy #1 along with some Barracuda, Sand Bass and Sculpin.

Newport Beach
Latest reports we have is the bite at the Newport reef as dwindled down to maybe a fish if your lucky type of bite.
Lot’s of good sized Calico Bass and Sculpin being caught though.
There were a few large Yellowtail caught in deep (120 ft depth) outside of the reef over the past week, but not enough of them to come shooting out to target them. These have been more luck than anything else.
All of them came on the dropper loop with either a live Mackerel or a live Squid.

Dana Point to Oceanside
Capt. Dave Hansen says this is the best fishing he has seen here in 20 years for the month of June.
Yellowtail, White Seabass, Barracuda, Calico Bass, Sand Bass, Sculpin, and Sheephead are ALL biting.
The numbers of Yellows and Seabass fell off a bit yesterday with a drop in water temps but the fish are still around and being seen. San Mateo to Barn is the better Yellowtail areas, while Salt Creek and San onofre / Barn has the Seabass.
Barracuda are popping up for time to time during the Day. San Onofre and Barn Kelp have been and continue to be good spots to find them. The Red Bell buoy just abouve the Harbor is another spot to possibly find some Cudas.
As for the Calico Bass, Find a kelp bed, ANY kelp bed. Calico Bass are eager to come out and play. If you have Anchovy and chum some the bite can get about as stupid as it can be

The Southwest corner was the place to be yesterday afternoon.
This morning the Whistler is seeing action, lots of boats chasing bird schools. Mixed Yellowtail and Barracuda.
the 32 spot also has bird schools with big Barracuda on it.
Down to the South of San Diego on the IB flats the Sand bass are biting GOOD this morning. Lot’s of limits of LEGAL sized Sandies

Captain Rich Gallegos of the 4 pack Tailwalker http://www.tailwalkersportfishing.com reported in after doing an evening session last night at La Jolla.
He had 1 more yellowtail on the South West end of the kelp and a lot of big barracuda.
The yellowtail are under the terns while the barracuda are under the sea gulls.

Channel Islands
This area is ON FIRE!!!
The East end of Anacapa Island at the Arch and the Ormond Power Plant are the spots to hit for a White Seabass and Yellowtail. Lots more yellowtail in recent days.
The Blue Banks and Yellow Banks at Santa Cruz Island also have schools of Yellowtail on them.
Now you can add in Santa Rosa Island for Seabass! The squid are getting thick now too.
Currently Ciscos has a supply of Live Squid for sale.
You can also Call Tim Athens on the Squid Boat Outer Banks (805) 987-6259 for bait availability and location

Nothing at Anacapa, made a move to the Power Plant and it was slow so went to Deep Hole and made squid on the spot. Limits White Sea bass this afternoon. The whole seiner fleet is here.
IMG 3077

Catalina Island
Plenty of good fishing happening all around the Island right now.
Yellowtail and Barracuda, along with lots of Calico Bass are biting along the front. The areas west of the MPA to the west end are perhaps the best zone although you could very possibly do just as well on the slide and Palisades east of Avalon.
Around back the White Seabass are still on the same spots. The bit for some again this morning at 5 to 6am which is the same time as the High Tide. Some really big Yellows are in this area as well.
These are ALL live squid fish!

Report from Matt on the Sea Konig:
Fished East end Catalina around Freddies and the Palisades for two yellowtails (10-12lbs) and two halibut (6lbs) and one released.
Water was pretty turbulant and the clarity was 10′-15′ and 64 degrees. Weather was great with very little wind…
Everything caught on live squid dropper loop style in 50′ of water…

San Clemente Island
Lot’s of Yellowtail at the Island right now!
Southeast wind condition is limiting the numbers of Yellowtail caught so far today however.
Calico Bass fishing is very good now but little attention is being given to them with all the killer Yellowtail action.

La Jolla / Point Loma
Excellent Yellowtail fishing yesterday. slowed up some with a huge drop in water temp over night.
It was 69 yesterday afternoon and 62.1 this morning. That isn’t stopping the bite though as a number of nice Yellowtail have been caught this morning.
Capt. Rich on the Tailwalker checked in at 10AM with 1 nice yellowtail of about 20lbs and relayed a message from Steve Massey on the Blackjack that they also had Yellowtail on the boat this morning.
Yellows are scattered all the way from Mission Bay to Northwest Corner. The area just below the MPA is working very good at midday.
The morning run of the New Seaforth got 19 Yellows and 2 white Seabass along with 75 Barracuda which shows there is still volume of fish around, in spite of the temp drop

Coronado Islands
Plenty of Yellowtail around but a nasty southeast swinging to Southwest wind is really messing things up.
Barracuda is the main player in these conditions but some guys are catching a few Yellows anyway.

Report from Greg on the Reel Living:
3 guys, my 8 year old son and I hit the Coronados on Sunday morning.
We picked up a half scoop of Sardines that were big but of good quality and a half scoop of Anchovies which didn’t fare as well.
We left Point Loma around 6:30 and arrived at the Middle Grounds around 7:15 or so.
It was already windy with a strange SW wind which just kept picking up all day.
We set up some drifts off the lee of South Island and picked up 3 Yellowtail on flylined sardines all sometime around 11:00 to Noon. One model ran to 25 – 30 lbs. The other two were 15 lbs.
It turned into Victory at Sea conditions with spin drift blowing off the waves and even some rain moving through so we called it a day and hit some inshore spots for a few large Barracuda.
On of the guys on board has been fishing the islands for 45 years dating back to when he was a deckhand as a teenager.
His local knowledge made all the difference in the world. No GPS for him, just, “line up on that rock and go 100 yards that way.” Nice fishing even though it was rough out there.
No pics because we could barely stand on the rolling deck.
Greg

Report Updated: September 20, 2013 at 10:50 pm

Channel Islands
Santa Rosa and San Miguel Islands:
Great weather window right until Tuesday or maybe Wednesday. Little to no wind and seas are laying way down.
The wind out here has kept the waters cool so the Lingcod and monster Reds should be up in shallow water. Often less than 75 feet at San Miguel.

Santa Cruz Island:
Yellowtail are being found and caught on the Blue banks and on the Yellow Banks

Anacapa Island and the Ventura Coast:
Good fishing in these areas right now. The East end of Anacapa Island at the Arch and the Ormond Power Plant are the spots to hit for a White Seabass and a possible Yellowtail.
Now a 3rd spot is working too. This one is the Salmon area out near Arco Island.
Guys working this spot with the cannon ball / flasher rig are finding a few Salmon near balls of bait. The fish are hanging under the bait. Find the depth with your meter and get a bait down to that depth. Mixed in with the Salmon are some Tanker Seabass and some big Barracuda.
Currently Ciscos has a supply of Live Squid for sale. You can also Call Tim Athens on the Squid Boat Outer Banks (805) 987-6259 for bait availability and location

Mr Nibbles report: Arch rocks and Ormond are still good spots. Lots of squid to be made, and some nice WSB to be landed. Prepare to cozy up with your neighbor though…it’s close-quarters combat-fishing out there!
Mr. Nibbles

Catalina Island
This Island over all is seeing really good fishing. Lot’s of boat traffic too.
the backside from Church to Salta Verde still has schools of White Seabass and some Yellowtail. The numbers caught fell off somewhat due mainly to much noise and boat traffic. It should improve with lighter pressure and a new moon phase coming up.
There is some squid in this area, but tough to get to float. Enough to jig some for bait though.
On the front schools of Yellowtail can be found almost any where. The stuff is roaming around a bunch. One day was off to the east of Hen Rock and the next it was all north of Gibraltar and up to the west end.
Barracuda are mixed in with this 6 to 8lb yellowtail.
The Long Beach Carnage is at Avalon with Live Squid.
Darrell on the Mary Clair is NOT at the Island right now but should be soon

LOT’s of Yellowtail at the Island right now and they are chewing. The Yellows are being found fron the Point, through the Cove and up the back to the Caves and China Point.
Plenty of Squid in the cove to make bait with IF the Sea Lions will leave you alone.
The Eldorado popped the 100 fish mark yesterday with 102 Yellowtail in the 12 to 25lb class. NO little ones! They also caught and released 11 BLACK SEABASS!
Expect to see a lot more trips running out here this week!

LA Harbor
Lot’s of Barracuda are around just some days they are being picky. Yesterday was one of those down days. Plenty of fish were seen on the meter, they just didn’t want to play very much.
These Barracuda are mixed in size with some barely legal to giant stove pipe pushing 10+lbs.
Sand Bass fishing in the evening can be excellent if you find the right pile up of fish. The action is taking place from the Ship Anchorage to Izors reef in 15 to 18 fathoms.
The Barracuda are being found on meter marks mostly and then caught on the Iron lures like an Ironman #3 in Blue/white, a Kroc-o-dile or a 2oz Anchovy colored Mega Bait.
Not many Yellowtail left around the Buoy #1 but some Barracuda, Sand Bass and Sculpin are still biting.
Calico Bass are showing at the wall in the evenings for a few wall bangers and they are also showing on some of the rockpiles out over the Horseshoe Kelp.

Quite a few legal sized bass with some up to about 7lbs.
There is also a shot at some Barracuda as more and more of these fish are moving in up to the north on the Huntington Flats.

The calender says June 2nd. The life in the kelp beds says mid August. Water temps up in the HIGH 60 to almost 70 degree’s.
Yellowtail are being seen at nearly ever spot now, with the best shot at hooking one happening at San Mateo, San Onofre and Barn Kelp, Yellowtail Kelp.
In addition to the yellowtail, Barracuda from just legal to over 8lbs moved in and the Calico Bass bite is crazy.
Dana Bait barge just got a load of Anchovy too! Now there is fantastic chum available to really stir the pot. Should be some very good fishing the next few days, maybe longer

Report from Mark Austin on the Heritage:
West winds were up early so decided to drift the kelp beds outside San Clemente State Park. Calico’s were chomping the swim baits lathered with Uini Butter. Fun morning!

Dave Hansen took a break and went out to do a little Calico Bass fishing. He said “It’s like it was 20 years ago fish at every spot. Clean water warm water. Can’t even think how good it’s going to get.”

La Jolla / Point Loma
Yellowtail are chewing this morning! The New Seaforth has over 35 yellows at 8:30am. Going to be a big day!
The bite is happening at the point of the kelp leading into the Cove. Lot’s of skiffs and Kayaks on the spot as well.
Conditions were great early in the morning but a south wind has started to blow a little at 11am.

Evening update: HUGE day for the New Seaforth! 61 Yellowtail on the AM followed by 48 more on the afternoon run. Plenty of Barracuda caught as well. Most of the fish were the 6lb stuff but a few were BIG fish pushing the 25-30lb mark. LOT’S of skiff traffic

Coronado Islands
Some new clean water filled with Yellowtail moved into the area yesterday. Counts shot up from near nothing to a high of 70 on the Malihini. Not everybody got them though.
Guys who left the Island chain early didn’t see or catch much and some of the boats there all day didn’t see them until late.
Lot’s of Barracuda around at South Island and the Rockpile but those giant Bonito seem to have disappeared.

Evening Update: Wind today made fishing the Islands very tough. As a result not many Yellowtail were caught.
Barracuda was the primary biter today.

OFFSHORE
Dana Point
Everyday someone is finding a kelp with Yellowtail on it. MOST kelps are empty however.
Water 3 to 10 miles off the beach is clean and warm, at around 68-69 degree’s.
Kelps out here will load up again, it’s just a matter of time.

Mexico
No local Tuna or Albacore yet….. Any day now we will though. LOT’s of Kelp paddy Yellowtail however.
The closest kelp paddy Yellowtail right now appears to be at the lower end of the Coronado Canyon leading into the 425 / 101 areas. 10 to 15lb grade.
The Hidden still has yellows on kelps and a few jumbo Bonito jumping on the troll jigs.
The Banda Bank is loaded. almost every kelp found is reported to be full of yellowtail with a good percentage over 10lbs
The waters off Santo Tomas (about 90 miles) are also loaded with Yellows. Easy limits for the boats hitting this area right now

200 miles
Very good signal!! Bluefin up to 145lbs. Yellowfin in the 15-20lb class and Dorado are ALL being caught. The latter 2 fish are very early for being this far north.
Lots of Yellowtail on every kelp too. Up hill current should aid this stuff in coming up this way soon!

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
