Channel Islands
Ventura County Coast
Squid showed up off Goleta Beach up north of Santa Barbara harbor.
Some Seabass are being caught on it from time to time.
Spots of Barracuda are roaming around along the coast as well. These schools also have an odd Seabass or 2 mixed in with them.
34.23.27 x 119.44.15  General Area north of Santa Barbara / Goleta Beach

Santa Cruz and Anacapa Islands
Yellowtail are being caught on the Yellow and Blue Banks at Santa Cruz and in the gap and fish camp at Anacapa.

33 55.90 x 120 00.10  Eagle’s Nest
34 00.20 x 120 00.00  Beecher’s Bay

Hermosa Beach
The fleet is working an area about a 1/4 mile south of the Pier in 75 feet of water and catching a few Seabass. There are more fish however spread out away from this crowd.
One FishDope member caught Seabass this morning just before Dawn right out in front of the Pier away from all the crowds.
Plenty of Squid around to make bait with, even during the day the Squid is jiggable.
Bait is hard to jig in the morning, but the the squid floated really well at night.
We recommend fly lining with a 6/0-8/0 sized J-hook or an Owner 7/0 Ahi Twist with 1-2 squid or fishing a glow in the dark lead head, casting and retrieving in the middle of the water column has been working best.

In addition to the Seabass this area is also beginning to kick out some Barracuda and Sand Bass.

LA Harbor
Barracuda and Sand bass are on the bite on the extreme upper Huntington Flats, Izors and the Anchorage outside of Queens gate.
The Cuda are also showing on the western edge of the Horseshoe
Huntington Beach to Newport Beach
This Seabass bite appears no to have dried up for most although a few more Seabass were caught last night.
The Squid is still thick so there is always a chance this could turn back on.
The bite is on the Huntington Flats from where the Mary Claire is anchored up (33.38.760 x 118.03.615) and to the south and also in front of the Huntington Pier in 75′ of water.
There are a few fish being hooked at Newport Reef.
Darrell on the Mary Claire made full tanks of Squid last night.  He will be on this spot all day and plans to make more tonight right on the spot.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!
     Newport Reef

33.36.08 x 117.57.52
33.36.13 x 117.57.50

Dana Point
Off color water slowed down the Calico Bass bite. It is still decent though, just not screaming wide open.
As conditions improve watch for the bite to rebound as well

South of Oceanside
Torrey Pines and Solana Beach still have some Squid, but not much in the way of large gamefish. Perhaps a Yellowtail or a Seabass is possible on Live Squid fished on the Squid Beds but right now it is more luck if you get one.

La Jolla / Point Loma
Crystal Pier Seabass bit again last night. A number of big tanker Seabass were hooked and landed. Plenty of Squid on the spot too, which is easy to find now as the area has become a boat parking lot.
A bunch of big Halibut are biting in this area as well.
32.47.58 x 117.16.58· Pacific Beach Artificial Reef – Crystal Pier

Report from Keith on the Sweet V:
Fished with the fleet last night in Mission Bay to score a 55 lb white seabass. Making squid was a little more difficult than last week but made enough pieces to fill the bait tank.
Kieth Seabass_7-4

Imperial Beach
Very good to excellent Sand Bass fishing on the IB Flats. This spread of fish extends well into Mexican water.
Mixed in are a few Barracuda and Halibut.
32.34.00 x 117.12.00  IB Flats
32.31.50 x 117.08.60  Bull Ring

Coronado Islands
Same story as yesterday……..Beautiful water but no current is the story. The lack of current makes everything slow.
South Kelp has some signal of Yellowtail around but getting a bite is quite tough.
Barracuda action is decent down at the Rockpile if you interested in those.
Squid have been relocated! Check around 32.25.6 x 117.12.3. Could the Seabass have found this Squid?? It’s worth a look.
32.25.80 x 117.16.80  Middle Grounds
32.24.80 x 117.13.88  Ribbon Kelp
32.24.61 x 117.14.15  White Rock

32.17.50 x 117.10.50  Rockpile
32.17.00 x 117.09.50  Rockpile #2

Rosarito Flats
There is a Squid Bed in 140-150 feet of water between South Island Coronado and Rosarito.
Lot’s of squid and there have been a few yellowtail caught here by the 3/4 day fleet.
Could Seabass be on it too? very possible.
32.23.531 x 117.10.317

OFFSHORE
Dana Point
There is a big Kelp area centered at 33.16.33 x 117.34.20 yesterday.
Not every kelp is holding Yellows but enough are to make it worth the look.
The yellowtail are not always right under the kelp. They might be several hundred yards away at any given moment so it pays to give them a little extra time when you find one the looks right, with bait and a deep stringer.

209
No Yellows on kelps but pretty good fishing for Mako Sharks.

182 / 43 fathom spot
A number of reports from guys out this way say there are plenty of kelps but they are all dry except for some bait on a few of them.

Mexico
Generally speaking there isn’t much to report on of anything inside of 80 miles at this time. Dry kelps and no signs of Tuna.

302 / 425 / 101
Quiet……. Fair numbers of kelps but none found to be holding

Banda Bank
Report from Rick Zimmerman:
We fished out of the Coral today and hit many kelps from Banda Bank to 10 miles south and out 10 miles and in to Todos Santos for nada.  Water 62 degrees and all salads were dry.  Nothin happening at Todos Santos either.  Hit San Miguel reef for some lings for supper.  Mixed seas and 13 mph wind made for minor washing machine conditions.

110 to 130 miles
Bluefin numbers are on the rise and the fishing has made a big jump for the better.
The Tribute scored 85 Bluefin in the 30 to 50lb class on a 1.5 trip.
Best zone is still at 30.30 to 30.50 x 116.36 to 117.00. Bluefin, yft and a dorado or two. Long drifts for hours to get the bluefin
The hot spot yesterday was at 30.39 x 116.58.
The Tuna are being found by sonar marks, Jumpers and by long drifts off of Kelps.
Still plenty of 8 to 10lb Yellowtail on kelps, if your interested in those.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
If you go fishing please give us a call or shoot us an email.

The area won’t be hard to find. Lot’s of boats are on it
Bait is hard to jig in the morning, but the the squid floated really well at night.
We recommend fly lining with a 6/0-8/0 sized J-hook or an Owner 7/0 Ahi Twist with 1-2 squid or fishing a glow in the dark lead head, casting and retrieving in the middle of the water column has been working best.

Much slower Seabass fishing now than in past days.

Dana Point to Oceanside
The water greened up and has had the effect of slowing down the Calico Bass bite.
Kelp paddies off shore are starting to hold Yellowtail again…… See the Offshore section

Report from Jason on the Invictus:
North of Golf Balls Kelp beds, quick spear mission. Water was 68.7-68.9, hit it at gray light. Little or no current and kelp stringers were crossing/confused. Top half clean, bottom half at thermocline cooler and dirty. Top half cleaner, 25′ in some places, bottom half straight house to house on the vis. Overcast all day, no wind to speak of. Close interval left over S/W wind swell made going up the line slower, but came back in to O-Side at 24 knots. Trailer down for this run. Plenty of bait balls, sardine and Macs. Schools of just short Barries common. Lots of Sargo. One on our boat saw one WSB all day, about a 45 pounder, missed that opportunity for a variety of reasons. Tons of Sand Bass are over the mud/gravel in between kelps in about 55-65′, looks like spawning aggregations. A few for meat as well as a few Calicos. Hung it up at about noon.

Torrey Pines
The Squid is scattered and spread out. The light boats and seiners are still working it but are having trouble finding a concentration.
The Seabass bite that was here appears to have dried up. There was a lone Yellowtail caught however this morning.
You might be able to jig some squid and take it to Leucadia Kelp or Del Mar. The Calico Bass will love you for it.

La Jolla / Mission Bay
Squid can be made in La Jolla cove, crystal pier and just north of the MB Jetty.
Squid boats working this in the early am hours.
Mostly yellowtail at MB/Crystal Pier. Very little Seabass action. A big Halibut is possible however.

TJ Flats
SAND BASS! This bite is going stupid now with lot’s of spawning Sandies being caught. This bite is on Live Squid and there isn’t any left on this spot. Make a tankful at Crystal pier first before heading down.
You can catch some on Frozen Squid but the bite on this stuff is much slower than live.

UPDATE: Today the action is slower than in past days and a good jag of Sand Bass are now in US waters on the Imperial Beach Flats

Point Loma Sportfishing sent in this report:
The Daily Double had limits of Sand Bass yesterday on both the morning and afternoon trips. One lucky angler also landed a nice Yellowtail on the morning run. The boat is currently fishing in Mexico. So, if you have a Mexican permit, please bring it. If you don’t have a permit, you can get one at the office when you purchase your ticket. Boat departs daily at 6:30 am and again at 1:00 pm. For more information or to make reservations, please call the landing at 619-223-1627.

Rosarito Flats
This new squid bed has popped up in 140-150 feet of water between South Island Coronado and Rosarito.
Tons of squid and there have been a few yellowtail caught here for the 3/4 day fleet.

Coronado Islands
Beauitful water but no current is the story.

Report Updated: September 20, 2013 at 10:48 pm

Anacapa Island
Scott reported in from Anacapa island today: Fished windward side of Anacapa today. 1/2 scoop of squid at the dock and headed out to Anacapa around 8:00. Dozen or so boats anchored up at mid-point. Steiners offshore sitting…..good sign. Scored a 40 lb white sea bass around 12:00. Boat 100 yds of starboard had 3 by 11:00. Another 6 by other boats in area. Lots of squid.

Ventura Area
Between the power plant and county line were very good squid loads for the seiners, but not much in the way white sea bass.

Hermosa Beach
75′ of water off the Hermosa pier there was a quick little snap in the morning on white sea bass. Roughly 10 fish total were caught.
hermosa wsb
Bait was hard to jig in the morning, but the the squid floated really well at night.

We recommend fly lining with a 6/0-8/0 sized J-hook with 1-2 squid or fishing a glow in the dark lead head, casting and retrieving in the middle of the water column has been working best.

Watch out for the screaming guy on the Options as he has been quite a nuisance.

L.A. Bait

San Pedro Bait-Medium to large anchovies.
Long Beach-Live squid.
Nacho’s-Live squid, sardines, and anchovies.

Huntington Beach
Sand bass and barracuda fishing is a little on the sporadic side and the white sea bass fishing has dropped off to almost nothing.
The afternoon halfday fished the horseshoe with excellent fishing on the barracuda. The water cleaned up this afternoon, also, which should put the other fish in the area on the bite.

33.41.06 x 118.07.73 Sand Bass Junction
33.39.03 x 118.06.08 Izors Reef

The location also remains the same. The bite is on the Huntington Flats from where the Mary Claire is anchored up (33.38.760 x 118.03.615) and to the south and also in front of the Huntington Pier in 75′ of water.
There is also a few fish being hooked nightly at Newport Reef.

Catalina Island
Capt. Dave Hansen reported in from fishing Catalina Island with good yellowtail fishing at Iron Bound Cove yesterday morning. He also found a good squid float at Mill’s Landing in the evening. The meter looked good with the right kind, but didn’t get any bites. Ended up driving home in smooth seas.

Great yellowtail and barracuda fishing from Salta Verde to the MPA closure at China Point in 85′. Make sure you find yourself a good piece of the squid bed. There are 3 light boats there, so there is a good chance that it will get wrapped up real soon.

The hot new info is coming from the west end high spot that has yellowtail chewing on squid in the mid-morning hours while the current is running.

Newport Beach
Newport Bait-Medium anchovies and frozen squid

The boats out of Newport have been running up to the Huntington Flats to fish for sand bass and barracuda which have been a little slow in the morning, but gets a lot better in the afternoon when the current starts running.

Dana Point
Dana Point Bait Barge-4″-5″ anchovies

The boats are making runs to the kelp lines and down to the pipe and having an awesome day catching calico bass. The downside is 90% of these fish are just on the short side. Use the anchovie for chum and try throwing a bigger plastic deep in the kelp to see if you can get one the bigger bass to hit it.

33.19.08 x 117.31.76  Box Canyon #2
33.18.58 x 117.29.13  Barn Kelp

There was one kelp 8 miles out of Dana Point Harbor that was holding yellowtail. A Fishdope member ran outside and found the magic paddy and ended up pulling 10 yellowtail 8-14lbs. off of it with live squid.

Oceanside
Oceanside Bait Reciever-Medium size anchovies and sardines

Most of the good fishing has been centered around the artificial reefs out in front of the harbor. The best fishing is on the 12 fathom string of ARs. The calico bass are responding well to flylined baits and weighted baits using a 3/4 oz. sliding sinker right on the hook. The sand bass are biting closer to the bottom, but are coming up the eat the bait on it’s way down.

Torrey Pines
There have been 4 lightboats and 3 seiners working this area over mopping up all of the squid. There have been no reports of white seabass past 2 days.

La Jolla
Not much to report in this area except for the calico bass bite on the live squid. Unfortunately, most of these fish are all short. Once the current starts running to the south this place should turn on.

TJ Flats
The sand bass rodeo seems to be in full effect down here in 75′ of water and it is all on the live squid. Make sure you stop in front of Mission Bay and get the candy bait before heading down below the border.

Rosarito Flats
This squid bed has popped up in 140-150 feet of water between South Island Coronado and Rosarito.
Tons of squid and there have been a few yellowtail caught here for the 3/4 day fleet. 32.23.531 x 117.10.317

Commercial Fishing Vessels: Who has right of way? Part 2
When we asked the U.S. Caost Guard about a fishing vessel seining this is the response we got:
“To answer your question: A fishing vessel does NOT have the right away over a anchored power driven vessel. The key to the answer comes out of the NAVRULES definitions – Underway – means not at anchor. Rule 18, Responsibilitie between vessels states ” a power driven vessel UNDERWAY shall keep clear of a vessel engaged in fishing”. According to the definitions a power driven vessel at anchor is not underway according to the rules and hence doesn not have to keep clear – the fishing vessel should alter course to avoid collision.”
Basically, common sense will dictate the situation.
Here is a some simpler verbage because this can be quite confusing. Once the seiner is back to the skiff, it is NOT under power. Absolutely without question, if the vessel is displaying the appropriate day shapes or lights, it has the right of way. If an anchored vessel is notified of the encumbered vessels situation, IE. drifting down on it,( shapes and lights, radio, bullhorn, screaming, are deemed notification) it is encumbent of the anchored vessel to give way. This situation has been to court and upheld.

Offshore
Captain Kona Mike of the sport boat Blue Horizon reported in after an extended overnight trip. He took one for the short range fleet team (and private boats too) and fished short. Mike started out going straight down the beach past the Coronado Islands down then headed across the Lower Hidden Bank towards the Dumping Grounds. 15 miles from the Dumping Grounds the water turned cold and ugly green. He then turned North West and went across the lower tip of the Mushroom over to the 60 Mile Bank. Turned Straight West and went through th Mushroom then zigged back North East up to the East Butterfly and then home. Out of all the areas and kelps checked these are the only spots he found that had life.
Yellowtail on a kelp in lime green color water. 32.12.090 x 118.10.040 Lower Part of E. Butterfly.
32.15.180 x 118.03.100 Spot of jumping bluefin. Could not get to go. Threw everything at them. Bonito on troll at the San Salvador Knoll in the evening.

32.03.23 x 118.23.25 Lots of life on meter 65F.
Mike said the best looking water that he would run to again is at the East Butterfly.

130 Miles Offshore
Yellowfin, bluefin, and limits of yellowtail is the word of the day in this zone, again. The warm water break has moved 6 miles to the east and the numbers for this area is now 30.31 x 116.51.
