Bait Report
The San Pedro and Newport barges both received fresh loads of live squid this morning.
There will be plenty around all weekend. There’s plenty of anchovies and sardines as well.
Both barges are open 24/7 for the season and can be reached at the following numbers…..or just come on by.
Newport 310-461-5370 or Ch 79 on the VHF
San Pedro 310-365-2516 or Ch 11 on the VHF

Channel Islands

Steady and consistent fishing all around the Islands and on the coast this week.
There are Yellowtail at Anacapa Island, Santa Cruz Island and several of the Eastern spots on Santa Rosa Island.
White Seabass are in many of the same locations as well.
Santa Rosa has Squid at Beecher’s Bay, where you also have a shot at a Seabass and possibly a Large Halibut on the squid grounds.
Currently Cisco’s has a supply of Live Squid for sale.
You can also Call Tim Athens on the Squid Boat Outer Banks (805) 987-6259 for bait availability and location. This morning he is at the East end of Santa Cruz Island.
Have a look at these fishing spots:

The 38th annual Halibut Derby is June 8th and 9th (Saturday and Sunday) http://www.halibutderby.com/
You can still register for this event by clicking on the link.

Over the past several weeks some very large Halibut have been caught at Twin Roads, Twin Towers, and the corner of the Bay just above the Santa Monica Pier. The general depth has been roughly 45 to 55 feet but don’t afraid to look in water as shallow as 15ft if the surf conditions will allow for it.
No live squid is available at either Redondo or at MDR. You will have to travel to LA Harbor to get live squid.

In other news the Bonito bite in King harbor continues. A couple more Yellowtail were caught as well. The Bonito are near the bait barge. Fishermen on the breakwall and in skiffs are catching them using live Anchovy’s, fly lining is the ticket for the skiff guys while splasher rigs and 3/4 to 1 oz Kastmasters are doing it for the guys on the breakwall.
The Yellowtail are at the Bubble hole and want a live Squid. Some have even been hooked by guys on the pier. Use at least 40lb and pull HARD or they will rock you or wrap you in the pier.
34.01.00 x 118.47.00  Paradise Cove

Catalina Island
Lot’s of 10lb class Yellowtail were caught along the stretch from Blackrock to Starlight and Johnsons Beaches. Get a little current running and they bite good. Couple of Sportboats scored 40+ yesterday and left them biting. All on the Live squid. Best rig was a 1/2 slider with a 3/0 hook on 20 to 25lb fluorocarbon. A few Barracuda are mixed in with the yellows.
Also take a look around Little Gibralter as a few yellowtail were taken there today as well.
Overall the bite today didn’t happen for most. A few fish here and there but overall not gangbusters like the day before.
Water temp in the area was 66.7F. Just around the corner at the West end it drops down to 59F. Little if anything seen on the backside middle.
2nd spot is on the back side at Salta Verde. A small number of 25lb class fish are showing on what appears to be tiny squid spots out in 90 feet. Once again Live squid is the ticket.

White Seabass are reported to be active for some skiffs at Orange rocks, Sliver canyon and Salta Verde. Sentinel Rock might also have a few fish close to the Squid bed there (where everyone is making squid).
Calico Bass are fairly active all around the Island but not in the numbers they were a few days ago.
Barracuda are being found in random spots frontside and backside. Try the Palisades and from Eagle reef up to Starlight away from the crowds for a chance at yellowtail. Find current! Lack of current has hurt most of the islands fishing as of late.

Darrell Wilson on the Mary Clair made 40 scoops of squid last night between Ben Weston and Sentinel Rock
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!
The Long beach Carnage is also at catalina with full tanks of squid. They can be reached at (562) 714-8103 or on channel 11.
Both boats are parked at Avalon.

San Clemente Island
Very little new to report. The Navy still has the cove and China point areas closed. a few front side and back side spots are open depending on the day. Be sure to check BEFORE you go!
Some seiners made Squid at the Runway a couple nights ago although the area is closed to fishing.
Always make sure the Island is open before making the run.

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
Barracuda and Sand bass is the primary story around this section of the coast. The Sand bass are begining to move out onto the mud to start spawning. Try looking at the zone from just outside of Queens Gate over to Izors reef. The depth is 15 to 18 fathoms.
Some of these bass are really big. Up to 8-9lbs. Most lately have been legal 14″ fish.
By far the best time of day to catch them has been the evening and the mornings.
Barracuda are in the same locations as the Sand bass along with a spot or 2 showing around the 150’s and out towards the double rigs.
Want a yellowtail? Try the buoy number 1 rockpile 33.39.400×118.13.420. A small number of yellowtail are living on the spot and a couple are being caught almost daily. They are tuned into live squid, just like the sand bass.
33.40.00 x 118.13.34  Horseshoe North
33.38.70 x 118.12.27  East Horseshoe
33.38.40 x 118.14.00  Horseshoe

33.41.73 x 118.08.72  Gambler Wreck
33.41.06 x 118.07.73  Sand Bass Junction
33.39.03 x 118.06.08  Izors Reef (Bolsa Chica Artificial Reef)

Dana Point
Earlier in the week the fishing North of Dana Point Harbor was picking up with lots of calico bass and a few yellowtail around off Salt Creek. The water temperature was 68F when the fish were biting.
Today Captain Dave Hansen relayed a report from one of his buddies fishing Salt Creek that the water temps were around 58-59F and the bass bite had shut off. The area seemed lifeless.

Offshore 5-6 miles there were a few kelps holding yellowtail out in front of Dana Point all the way down to San Mateo Point. It was 1 in 9 kelps had a few fish on them. Everything seems to be resetting as the Sum Fun couldn’t find a holding kelp the past couple of days.

Not many of our contacts fished down the beach off San Mateo or the Barn Kelp. The Barn Kelp has been the go to spot for white sea bass and yellowtail for the spearfishermen.

The swell has picked up and is breaking over the break wall in Dana Point Harbor.

La Jolla / Point Loma
Big swells and high surf is keeping most kayakers off the water this morning. Water temp 65.8 the temps are starting to rebound back to the 68F that it took to get the yellowtail and barracuda to bite. The calico bass fishing has been decent along the edges of the kelp.
A couple of scattered yellowtail and barracuda were showing before 9am at the Northwest Corner. Nothing to exciting though as fishing has been slower towards the end of the week.
32.51.22 x 117.17.62  North West Corner
32.51.33 x 117.16.30  La Jolla Cove
32.51.34 x 117.16.62  The Cove
32.48.39 x 117 17.80· SW Corner

Coronado Islands
Scratchy yellowtail action continues. One or 2 lucky boats end up being in the right place at the right time and finding a school that wants to bite. The rest of the fleet are only scoring a handful if that many.
Barracuda fishing is also down right now. Much of this is being blamed on snotty weather and streaky water conditions. It might be clean and 66F at one moment and a few minutes later its 61-62F currents sweeping through with green water.
Plenty of fish are around and once this straightens out the good bite will likely rebound.
Check the usual spots starting with Pukey Point and working your way down the island chain through the middle grounds, lee side of South Island to the South Kelp Ridge and then the Rockpile. Look for birds, seals, bait, etc any type of life or current.
Slow troll sardines or mackerel and have a surface iron with 40lb test ready to throw at boiling fish.
32.25.80 x 117.16.80  Middle Grounds
32.24.80 x 117.13.88  Ribbon Kelp
32.24.61 x 117.14.15  White Rock
32.23.60 x 117.13.79  Bull Kelp
32.22.00 x 117.13.26  South Kelp Ridge

Ensenada
Steady action is the story. Yellowtail are being found between Punta Banda and the island. They are also being caught near the San Miguel reef.
Todo Santos Island is another good area to look for them. No live bait for sale in the bay right now.
Most guys are trolling Xraps and Rapalas for the 15 to 25lb yellows. Not many little guys around right now.
Plenty of Barracuda being caught as well.
31.48.000 x 116.46.000  The Gap
31.51.476 x 116.40.071  Barracuda Area
31.46.800 x 116.41.000  Punta Banda

OFFSHORE
Lot’s of boats will be heading out tonight on exploratory runs. Some will be heading down the beach to the area between Santo Tomas to Colonett.
Some will hit the Hidden Bank again for those Kelp Paddy Yellowtail and Bonito.
We are hearing a few might run long towards the Dumper.
The spotter plane saw good sign out there with big kelps and random spots of open water Yellowtail and Bonito.
The plane did not see any Albacore but that doesn’t mean they are not out there.
Albacore are tough to see even from a plane. They hang out deeper than the plane can see and come to the surface to feed. Unless the plane happens upon them feeding they won’t see them at all.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
If you go fishing please give us a call or shoot us an email.

Channel Islands
Yellowtail and Seabass are scattered all over the Islands and on the coast the Seabass are showing in several areas.
Anacapa Island, Most of the spots at Santa Cruz and several of the eastern spots on Santa Rosa island ALL have Yellowtail on them! CRAZY!!
Seabass are around over most of these areas too just the catch numbers went down a bit.
On the coast the Power Plant is working. Same for the Deep Hole. County line area is hit and miss. Seiners hit it hard and scattered what didn’t get wrapped.
Santa Rosa has Squid at Beecher’s Bay and you have a shot at a Seabass and a Large Halibut there.
Currently Cisco’s has a supply of Live Squid for sale.
You can also Call Tim Athens on the Squid Boat Outer Banks (805) 987-6259 for bait availability and location. This morning he is at the east end of Santa Cruz Island

Marina Del Rey
KING HARBOR! Lot’s of 2-3lb bonito and even a few Yellowtail showing right now.
The Bonito are mainly near the bait barge. Guys on the breakwall and in skiffs are catching them Live Anchovys, fly lined is the ticket for the skiff guys while splasher rigs and 3/4 to 1 oz Kastmasters are doing it for the guys on the breakwall.
The Yellowtail are at the Bubble hole and want a live Squid. Some have even been hooked by guys on the pier. Use at least 40lb and pull HARD or they will rock you or wrap you in the pier.
Rocky Point some barely short Seabass and a few Yellowtail have moved in on the spot. The Calico Bass are also turning on. Finally the Santa Monica Bay is seeing some good surface action like the rest of So Cal has been seeing for over a month now.
STILL no barracuda though. They are long over due for this area now. They could pop up at any moment though so stay alert and watch for birds school and jumpers. A big meat ball of Anchovy would also warrant taking a look at.

Catalina Island
Conditions this morning….. East end, Big drop in water temp. now at 56 to 58f. Sea condition was sloppy. No current found from Church Rock to Salta Verde. No Seabass.
A few Halibut at Salta Verde. Squid can be found at Ben Weston. Lasest word had no Seabass seen or caught from the middle back to the west end.
Water temp 63F at the West End. Weak trickle of current at Johnson’s Rocks. Starlight – Johnson’s Rocks have Yellowtail biting when the current is running. All on Live Squid.
Darrell Wilson is finally back at Catalina and will likely have squid for the weekend. Call him to get his location.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

San Clemente Island
Pyramid Cove and China point are closed for the rest of the month according to the Navy website, However some other spots remain open. These are changing from day to day.
Be sure to get the info before running out here on where you can fish and what is closed.
The Seiner fleet came over to the Island and made squid off the Runway at the upper west end. It’s possible Seabass could be there with the Squid.
Lot’s of Yellowtail are at the Island, however they are, for the most part in the closed section in the Cove and China Point.
Always make sure the Island is open before making the run.

LA Harbor
Early word this morning is that the Barracuda are biting this morning near Izors Reef. The spot was/is at 33.40 x 118.04
Our contact is on the spot trolling Yozuri Crystal Minnows and has 6 on board by 9am. The size of the Cuda was not very impressive withe average weight being 4-6lbs.
Sand and Calico bass are active now with some FAT spawner Sand bass out in front of the Queens Gate and spread down to Izors. A lot of this stuff has moved out onto the mud preparing to start spawning.
The best Sand bass action, by far, is after 6pm in the evening.
Calico Bass are biting. Word we got is the better ones are on the Northern and western edge of the Horseshoe
Buoy #1 Rockpile. A few Yellows are still living on the spot and a few of them are being caught just about everyday. Some Sand bass, Calico Bass and Sculpin are also showing on this spot.

Dana Point
Yellowtail are in the inshore Kelp Beds. best shot is San Mateo south through Barn kelp. Not much seen from them today however.
Calico Bass are the main players. The bite tapered of a bit with a drop in water temp but it will rebound quick with better weather.
Not much signal from any barracuda either today.
Kelps on the outside didn’t produce any Yellowtail today that we are aware of. It’s still possible a few fish are out there though as it seems almost daily somebody finds one with a few fish on it.

Fish Dope member Christine landed her first fish ever yesterday while fishing a kelp off Dana Point next to the Sum Fun.
Not many kelps holding fish but they found the needle in a haystack and got to share a kelp with Captain Brian
Cristine Yellow_6-6

Report from Micheal: My buddy Wes and I fished the kelp down in San Clemente on Wednesday the 5th. We anchored in about 50 feet of water right outside the kelp line. Pinned two fresh dead squids on and dropped it straight down with a dropper looper. Within two minutes hooked into this beast. She went 40lbs at the scale. Catching her compensated for the horrible weather. Wind blew hard all the way back to Newport! No luck for bass, we were chumming chovies and squid and fishing both but did not get into any.

La Jolla
Best fishing was for Barracuda today with just a few yellowtail caught. Weather played a big role in this. water has rolled somewhat and the temp is down several degree’s. The fish are still around so watch for the bite to recover with better conditions
South west corner was once again a good spot to look at.

Point Loma / Imperial Beach
Same messed up conditions as La jolla cut deeply into the good fishing these 2 areas have been seeing.
The Sand Bass are the primary biter and the flats is the place to find them.
Not many barracuda around today although we are sure they are still in the area.

Coronado Islands
The Islands are in a funk. Wind is messing everything up.
Just a sample of Yellowtail and Barracuda caught with much of it at South Island on the lee side.
A small number of boats that just happened to be in the right place at the right time did alright but many didn’t.

All around Anacapa Island, Most of the spots at santa Cruz and several of the eastern spots on Santa Rosa island ALL have Yellowtail on them!

Redondo Beach
Attention! Shore fishermen and skiff guys. Bonito are chewing in King harbor on fly lined Anchovy and splasher rigs.
Yellowtail are in the Harbor too! Some big units are showing at the Bubble hole and even a couple hooked off the pier.
They are rocking everybody who hooks one on less the 40lb.
Down at Rocky Point some barely short Seabass and a few Yellowtail have moved in on the spot.

One of the better yellowtail zones is west of Gibraltar up to the west end on the front. Try hitting Eagle Reef.
On the Back side they are roaming over the Squid beds from the Vee’s up to Freddie’s.

Seabass are mostly on the back in the same areas they have been, from Church Rock to Silver Canyon. Haven’t heard much about the middle of the back except for some Squid at Ben Weston.(stay out of the Farnsworth MPA)
Orange Rocks area might be a good location to look for Squid too. Something is holding all those fish in the area.
Last night the area was very slow with only a Black Seabass being caught. No Yellows or White seabass

Barracuda are roaming around almost everywhere right now, but the better areas are where the Yellowtail are and add in the Slide and Palisades areas.
Calico Bass…… Find any kelp bed. Calicos are on it. They are still on the Boiler rocks too if you want a shot at a BIG one.
Right now there is no Squid for sale at the Island. The Mary Claire is still down for repairs. Darrell tells me that he should be back to the island by the weekend for sure.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

Squid was in the cove in good enough numbers to make bait with, as of yesterday.

LA Harbor
Sand bass:
Twilight time is the best. Some nice quality bass are being caught in the big ship anchorage right outside of Queens gate. Leadhead and Squid is working best.
Calico Bass:
Various rockpiles have turned on with really good calico Bass fishing. Word we got is the better ones are on the Northern and western edge of the Horseshoe
Barracuda:
Most of these are being found in the same zone as the Sand bass but some are out on the 150 and out by the rigs. All meter mark fish right now. No birds school stuff or Jumpers being seen.
Sardines are working better than the Iron but you can still hook them on the jig. Cast out and let it sink DEEP and wind it back at a 45 degree angle to the boat. wind it at a medium speed. Stop and go retrieve often works best.
Yellowtail:
Same story….Bouy #1 Rockpile. A few Yellows are still living on the spot and a few of them are being caught just about everyday. Some Sand bass, Calico Bass and Sculpin are also showing on this spot.

Newport Beach
From this location most guys are still turning north for the Newport Reef or all the way up to the Upper Flats and the Horseshoe.
The Reef has decent Calico Bass fishing happening now with a few really big ones being caught too.
There aren’t any more reports of Seabass coming from the Reef in the past few days. Same for the larger grade Yellows that were biting out in 120 feet outside of the reef.
Twilight fishing on the reef is excellent with a full mix of Cailco and Sand Bass along with a Barracuda or 2. The guys are also catching some nice sized Sculpin.

Dana Point to Oceanside
The Seas are on the choppy/sloppy side this morning. That didn’t stop the Sum Fum from taking a look a couple miles off San Mateo for Kelp Paddies. They looked at 8 kelps for nothing and went into the kelp where they quickly hooked 5 yellowtail and landed 3.
The calico Bass are snapping good. Still 10 to 1 shorts however. Not much of any barracuda in recent days and none so far today

La Jolla / Point Loma
Slow this morning. Conditions have changed. there is a south wind blowing and the seas are sloppy. The bait and birds are gone. The water temp is down 3 degrees since yesterday.
Barracuda are the primary biter but Yellowtail are still here with a few of them being hooked. The Southwest corner spot right up against the MPA boundary is where most of the action is taking place.

Report from Garrett:
Fished La Jolla yesterday afternoon from 3:15pm to 7:30pm.  Decent wind from 3pm till almost 6pm.
Perfect 5-7″ sardines from MB bait.  Started trolling a purple Rapala at parallel to south end of the MLPA right along the border.
Once to the top turned it north and pointed it towards a crowded northwest corner.  Tried slow trolling with everyone else once I got there, but just too many boats around so I did drifts from 120′ of water to 75′ over the northwest corner area.
Managed to pick up a healthy 3-4lb calico on the 7x on the first drift.  Current and wind both going in.  That it was after that though.
Nothing on a live sardine that I was dragging behind the boat while I tossed the surface plug.
Most of the boats had moved to the southern end of the MLPA, but I wanted to give the NW corner one more shot so I slow trolled around a bit more for nothing.
The birds and boats down at the southern end of the MLPA finally had me over there by about 6pm.
Birds and about 8 private boats spread out right at the border of the MLPA (on the south side) in 90-120′ of water.
Two baits go in the water and almost instantly are raked and attacked by cuda.
After a few raked baits I finally get the right kind.  After a good 10-15 minute fight I dump the fish!
Nearly 12 hours later and I’m still pissed about it.  I’ve caught plenty of 25-30lb YT.  This was north of 30lbs (and wasn’t a WSB or BSB).  I never saw color, and after it’s 4th run against the 10lbs or so of drag I gave her a little more pressure to turn its head (was getting anxious with the seals around) and busted the knot.  Man I’m still ticked.
Continued to work to get another but never had a second chance.  Cuda were nearly full speed on the live bait, especially if you wanted a raked bait.  I could not get bit on the a sardine colored 7x.  Completely shocked none would hop on the surface plug as they were pretty much everywhere.
Ended the day without any food for the table, but pulled on a handful of cuda and a nice calico.
Perhaps its for the best I never saw that YT, but damn it sucks dumping a fish when you know it was your fault!
Never got a water temp.  Nice and clean north, a little green hue to the south.
Knock on wood, but this fishing reminded me of the good old days when one could get out to the kelp for a quick run with the surface plug and in the few hours before sunset you’d have a good shot at a YT and a near guarantee at the calico and barracuda.

Coronado Islands
Yellowtail are still around but snotty weather is holding down the catch rates.
One of the better spot to look right now is the lee of South island. This gets you out of the weather a bit and the Yellowtail and Barracuda are both on the Ribbon Kelp and in close to the Island close to the Casino.
