Squid and Seabass popped up off Goleta Beach up north of Santa Barbara harbor.
The Power Plant and the Deep hole spots turned off with the lack of Squid around.

No change. Yellowtail are being seen and caught on the Yellow and Blue Banks at Cruz and in the gap and fish camp at Anacapa.
Not many looking out here though.

Santa Rosa and San Miguel
SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH SATURDAY AFTERNOON
It still nasty getting out here and getting back. Limits of wind almost everyday for the past month.
There are still some Seabass in Beecher’s bay. The Eagles Nest also is worth a look too. Don’t risk going though if the weather is up.
Just forget San Miguel….NASTY and dangerous
33 55.90 x 120 00.10 Eagle’s Nest
34 00.20 x 120 00.00 Beecher’s Bay
Santa Barbara Island
SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH SATURDAY AFTERNOON
Weather permitting there is some Yellowtail at the Island. A white Seabass or a Jumbo Halibut are also possible.
It has been so rough, for so long that very few guys are making the trip out.
33.28.57 x 119.01.54 Anchorage

Sutil Island
33.27.46 x 119.03.03
Catalina Island
I know this sounds like a broken record but the story is the same today as it was yesterday and the day before that.
Yellowtail can be found at most of the better spots at anytime the current is running downhill. No Current = No Yellowtail.
Live Squid is the key to success! Anchovy is working good as a chum bait but not as a hook bait. Same for Sardines. No iron fish either.
The better spots have been / are Frog Rock, K-20, Hen Rock, Black Rock, Lions head, Eagle Reef and Starlight.
On any given day any one of these spots could be the “hot spot”
Calico Bass and pretty good volume of barracuda are biting right now too. These cuda are willing to bite the iron so if your a jig slinger you do have something to catch.
Right now it is unclear if anyone will be at the Island selling Squid. The Mary Claire, The Long Beach Carnage and Donz rig are all on the Huntington beach Squid / Seabass area
San Clemente Island
Seas have been very snotty on the backside of the Island but a few 6 pack boats continue to come over here anyway.
They have found all you want Squid at the Dunes along with a shot at a 35lb class Seabass and a 30 to 40lb Yellowtail.
The action isn’t fast, It’s just a pick but with the size of the fish, it doesn’t matter.
32.51.06 x 118.30.21 Lost Point
32.55.17 x 118.33.41 Eel Point
Always make sure the Island is open before making the run.

Huntington Beach
The beat goes on. Several reports of 2 to 4 Seabass per boat. Several reports of seeing nothing though too.
Most that did good made their squid and moved a little bit away from the Squid fleet. Almost all of the Seabass came on fly lined squid.
The location also remains the same. The bite is on the Huntington Flats from where the Mary Claire is anchored up (33.38.760 x 118.03.615) and to the south and also in front of the Huntington Pier in 75′ of water.
There is also a few fish being hooked nightly at Newport Reef.
Darrell on the Mary Claire made full tanks of Squid last night. He will be on this spot all day and plans to make more tonight right on the spot.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!
The Long Beach Carnage and the Donz Rig are also on the spot selling Squid.
Newport Reef

33.36.08 x 117.57.52
33.36.13 x 117.57.50
Sand Bass are now also showing very well for most of the guys fishing for the Seabass. Plenty of these have been big Bass in the 4 to 7lb class with very few short fish.
Barracuda…really BIG Barracuda are on the flats as well. Not everybody is catching them, but a few guys are seeing way more than they bargained for.
They are chewing off guys fishing the squid for the Seabass. Even the baits with 3 or 4 Squid on a 8/0 ahi twist hook.
These 8 to 12lb Cuda are also jumping on the Iron if you like throwing it.
Dana Point to South of Oceanside
Calico Bass fishing! Problem is 95% are short, 12 to 13 inch fish. Still great fun for the C&R guys.
Yellowtail are being seen again. Most of these are at Salt Creek and the Barn kelp. San Onofre also saw a few.
No much from the Barracuda that are legal sized. fair numbers of 22″ models though
Lastly some Seabass are reported to be around Salt Creek and the Clemente Reef again. No verified catches in recent days that we know of however.
33.28.65 X 117.43.38 Salt Creek

33.18.58 x 117.29.13 Barn Kelp
Report from Brett:
Dana bait barge ONLY has 6-8″ SARDINE as of 6AM this morning. Fished barn kelp with fresh dead squid for fairly wide open short calicoes. Cut up the sardines and the bigger ones came out. Short barracuda bit crocodiles as well. No fish found under paddies. Water was 69° and blue green
Crystal Pier
Still good amounts of Squid being found nightly and it appears to be getting better with the waning Moon.
1 to 3-4 boats get lucky and score a Seabass during the night but many are finding this bite to be slow.
Lot’s of short to just barely legal Calico Bass biting all along the kelp line at both La Jolla and Point Loma Kelp beds.
32.47.58 x 117.16.58· Pacific Beach Artificial Reef – Crystal Pier
TJ Flats
Squid is gone…..The Seabass are gone…… The Sand Bass bite is wide open. Plenty of just legal to 6lb Bass are chewing on the mud flats. Meter around until you find a big pile up of Bass and it’s game on! Squid is working best as bait but they are chewing almost anything right now. Sardines, Anchovies, Plastics and even yoyo iron.
A few nice Barracuda are also in the mix.
32.31.50 x 117.08.60 Bull Ring
32.28.40 x 117.09.10 Squid bed on the TJ Flats
Coronado Islands
No recent reports from Fishdope members. There is some Yellowtail around along with some Barracuda. The bite isn’t all that great however and the fish are scattered.
Right now slow trolling a Sardine on 25 to 30lb test around through the Gap, Middle ground and down past Ribbon Kelp.
The weather side of North Island and South Islands is worth a shot as well.
The southern end of North Island on the weather side is famous for big Yellowtail. Might be a decent spot to work over if your fishing in the Shoot-out.

32.17.00 x 117.09.50 Rockpile #2
Ensenada
Yellowtail and Barracuda around but the bite is slow. The fish that are being caught are stuff full of finbait.
Fish are being seen between the Island and Punta Banda, At the Island and the other gap near San Miguel reef.
Most of the action right now is on trolled Rapalas and Xraps but a few are coming on slow trolled Sardines brought down from San Diego.
Yellowtail are MIA on kelps offshore at the moment and the sightings of Bluefin have stopped. This could change at any time however.
31.48.000 x 116.46.000 The Gap

OFFSHORE
Still no Albacore yet…………
There is some talk of maybe a boat or 2 will take the chance and run out to the West – Southwest with this coming period of low winds.
Up until now the weather has just been to snotty to risk a trip out that way, when the weather down the beach was much better and there was the added bonus of plenty of Kelp Paddy Yellowtail.
Intel we got says the Plane made it as far out as the 213 / 1010 Trench and saw plenty of kelps holding Yellowtail but they saw no tuna. However that dos not mean there is no albacore out there as Albies are difficult to see, even with a plane unless they are up on the surface feeding. If they are down 100+ feet, which they quite often are, they are invisible.
No information about the Dumper, the Bell Bank, the Worm Bank or the Pistol.
The SST and chloro shots show the best conditions with super clean 63.5 water is SW of the Dumper. If they come in this year they will likely come down through this chute.
182
Got some info from a very good source that there are some Bluefin now on the 182 Ridge. None caught, just some jumpers being seen.
Kelps few aand most of them are dry.
Report from Kurtis for the 302/371/upper and lower Hidden Bank:
My Dad is out visiting from Arizona, and I wanted to get him on some paddy yellows. Took the day off of work on Thurs, 6/27 and went searching.
Details:
· Left Irvine at 6:00 am
· Arrived Harbor Island 7:15 am
· Loaded boat, had a number of bait pump and other issues, got gas, got bait,
· Private charter Capt. at the gas dock said he had been out W (302/371) day before for all dry paddies
· Finally out of harbor at 9:15am
· Headed outside of 425, and across and S, water at 425 was clean and 67.9, one small paddy, dry
· Headed S Upper Hidden, hit 4-5 paddies for nothing, water at U. Hidden was blue, clean and 69.2
· Headed further S to about 3 mi N of Hidden Bank, water was BEAUTIFUL and 70-70.4 degrees
· Hit 5-6 nice paddies here, none holding
· Headed NE toward the Upper Finger Bank, turned N and followed the ridge, stopped on 3 separate paddies
· On the 3rd paddy (Approx. 32.08.59 x 117.06.24) FINALLY at 4:45 pm I’m bit—one bite, one NICE YT, personal best on my boat, 27.5#!
· Hit two more paddies for nada, decided to run to the Rockpile for some bottom dwellers, picked up some lings and Salmon grouper
· Back in the slip at 9:00 pm, LONG DAY, approx. 105 miles
· Flat conditions all day, no more than 5-6 kt wind during the afternoon
· Water color/temp was amazing, and looks like it’s primed to pop, just had a hard time finding the right paddy today
Hope this helps!
-Kurtis Out
115 to 130 miles
From 31.00 down to 30.00 and from the 117 line inside to 116.40 is where the majority of the Bluefin are being seen.
Wide open yellowtail kelp in the zone with most every boat coming here scoring limits of Yellows by 10am.
30.00 and 31.00 x 116.40 to 116.50 was the best Bluefin area
220 to 250 miles
Tonnage of Bluefin! Lots of 50lb class fish with several over the 100lb class. Some boats made scores of up to about 90 tuna in a single day. Yellowtail are thick on the Kelps and there is also a few Dorado.
All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·

Last word we got is there are still some Seabass in Beechers bay. The Eagles Nest is probably worth a look too if you brave enough to make the trip out.
Just forget San Miguel….NASTY and dangerous

Weather permitting there is some Yellowtail at the Island. A white Seabass is also possible. Sadly it has been so rough for so long that very few guys are making the trip out.

Huntington Beach
Hit and Miss again last night with some getting the Seabass and others not seeing anything except for tonnage of BIG Barracuda.
This morning though, after the sun came up and until now at 11am the bite is much better.
The bite is on the Huntington Flats from where the Mary Claire is anchored up (33.38.760 x 118.03.615) and to the south and also in front of the Huntington Pier in 75′ of water.
There is also a few fish being hooked nightly at Newport Reef

33.36.08 x 117.57.52
33.36.13 x 117.57.50
Here is the best tip’s we can give you to get a Seabass in these conditions.
The Squid bed is very large so spread out. You will do much better away from the Light and Light boats. Find a spot of Squid away from all the noise and brite lights. Use you squid light only long enough to make bait and then GO DARK!! Turn that squid light OFF! Stealth is the ticket to a good Seabass bite. Avoid making any noise. Avoid any bright lights. (your deck lights are fine and should be on for safety reasons)
WAIT them out!! It very well might take all night for just 1 bite.
The Barracuda and Sand Bass fishing is turning excellent. They are being almost a pest to the Seabass guys but everybody else is jumping for joy!
Twilight action is close to being straight up awesome. Almost every Sand Bass is a legal fish with some up to around 8lbs.
The Barracuda are BIG too. Some of them, since the squid moved in are in the 10-12lb class.
These Cudas ARE willing to chew the Iron too. Not like the fish that popped up last month.
Darrell on the Mary Claire made full tanks of Squid last night at 33.38.760 x 118.03.615. He will be on this spot all day and plans to make more tonight right on the spot.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!
Report from Clifford on the E-Ticket:
Hit the squid grounds last night at 9:00 PM. Stayed away 1/2 mile from all the light boats and private boats roaming around the squid boats, like I read from Fish Dope, Thanks! Got this nice 35lbs at 11:50 PM and gaffed it at 12:00 AM. Only one fish all night, left at 3:00 AM
Dana Point
What can anyone say. The calico Bass fishing is great. Mostly short Bass but the action is fantastic.
The Bait barge has Anchovy which is the best chum possible. It also makes a good hook bait. Use 10-12lb test and a #4 hook and you’ll catch a bass on every bait right now.
Your best chance at a bigger Bass is to hit kelp spots away from the standard Party boat spots. Find some nice kelp with just enough current to pull the stringers down a little and start a slow but steady chumline. Toss big swmbaits
Yellowtail are once again showing at the kelp beds from San Mateo to Barn kelp. Most are just teasing guys by swimming by close to the boat or chasing the hooked bass or swimbaits. Not many of them are biting though but they are sure getting the guys excited.

Crystal Pier Squid area still has some Squid and is still producing a Seabass or 2 every night. This bite is far from being good however. More like you’ll be lucky to get a bite kind of action. You might get a big Yellowtail too, again if your really lucky.
Calico Bass fishing is excellent if you count all the short you need to wade through to get a limit of legal 14″ inch Bass. Live Squid increases the size ratio quite a bit however with a few really big Bass caught yesterday on skiff with a couple of FD members onboard.

Quite a few boats still looking at this area…….
squid has all but dried up and very little if any Seabass or Yellowtail are being caught now. Sand Bass on the other hand are moving out onto this mud flat and are biting really good.
Lot’s of 3 to 5lb average Sandies are showing now along with a few BIG barracuda.

115 to 130 miles
Interesting news….. The weather is finally coming down and the bluefin are showing and biting much better than in the past few weeks. In fact the best count in 1.5 day range came on the Pacific Voyager yesterday with 34 Bluefin. They were not alone either. The Eclipse also scored on the Bluefin with 19 of them. 15 of these Bluefin came off a kelp paddy! The rest off random jig stops.
These guys are down at 115 miles just inside of the 117.00 line.
For some odd reason the yellowtail bite slowed up but there are still lot’s of 8 to 15lb Yellowtail on almost every kelp you find. Now the Tuna are beginning to settle in on them too.
All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
If you go fishing please give us a call or shoot us an email.

Ventura Coast
Deep Hole / County line area is the hot spot for a coastal Seabass. The Kayak guys are doing the best on them due to the stealth of a Kayak. (no engine noise)
Plenty of Squid in the same area. Easy jigging up bait, even in the daytime.

Frontside:
No change. Yellowtail continue to show at nearing every spot along the front side of the Island, as long as the current is running down hill. Without Current they seem to vanish.
Live Squid is the key to success! Without this bait you’ll just be watching somebody else who does have it catch fish.
The better spots have been / are Frog Rock, K-20, Hen Rock, Black Rock, Lions head, Eagle Reef and Starlight.
On any given day any one of these spots could be the “hot spot” Calico Bass are on a rampage too. You’ll find them on all of these spots , along with any other thick kelp or Boiler rock area.

Backside:
The volume of Squid is on the rise for the most recent news we have and some Seabass continue to be caught just about every night and into the dawn hours.
A nice quality Yellowtail being caught too. Most of these are in the 20lb+ class while the front side fish are mainly 8 to 10 with a few up to about 15lbs.
Just like the front side the Calico Bass fishing is nearly stupid with Calicos on every kelp bed and Boiler Rock. Good Sheephead action too for those who want them.

The upper end of the Huntington Flats has come alive with activity. There is a large volume of Squid that has moved in and with this came some White Seabass and good numbers of Barracuda.
Also there is a large number of boats. Private, Sportboats, Light Boats and Squid seiners are all here.
Darrell on the Mary Claire made full tanks of Squid last night at 33.38.760 x 118.03.615. He will be on this spot all day and plans to make more tonight right on the spot. The Bait boat Donz Rig is sitting right next to the Mary Claire.

You don’t need to pile up on this spot!! These fish are spread from this area all the way down to Newport Reef.
Best bite today was on the Huntington Flats from The Donz Rig south and in front of the Huntington Pier 75′ of water.

Barracuda…… New volume of Cuda moved in along with the Squid. Good numbers of them seen on the Squid Beds along with the Anchorage area a couple miles south of the Queens gate. This is the same area the Sand Bass have been building up numbers at.

Calico Bass fishing this morning is very good. Quite a few guys have caught thier 5 fish limits of legal sized bass. LOT’s more are shorts. 75% percent are shorts which means 1 in 4 is a legal fish. A number of guys called in saying they have caught and released 50+ plus bass today.
Anchovy chum is the ticket to turning these bass on and then Plastics are doing the trick.

Crystal Pier
Parking lot of boats over night looking for a Seabass and / or a Yellowtail. The bite was super slow however. Maybe 1 or 2 fish caught and that was it. Squid is thinning out too.
In the surrounding kelp areas the Calico Bass bite is very good for short Bass. Lot’s of catch and release action though. Best chance for a legal is to chum them up with Anchovy and bait them with a Live Squid or fish the 5 to 7″ plastics.
Report from Keith on the Sweet V:
Fished last night for WSB and was able to make over 200 pieces of squid by jigging pretty quickly. The weather was windy and choppy out to the squid grounds. We fished the normal squid grounds outside of Mission Bay. Landed a nice 40 plus pounder on a fly line of squid. The beauty put up a nice fight and didn’t want to come into the boat. We wrapped up at 11:00 pm as the squid boats started to approach our spot with their lights. All and all, a very nice night. Keith
TJ Flats
This bite dried up too. The area was a parking lot last night with very few catching anything except Green Mackerel.
Squid is becoming hard to come by. Some fish are likely still around but for the most part it time to head back to the Coronados.

Coronado Islands
The pressure will be returning to the Islands with the flats bite ending. Some good action on Yellowtail was found at South kelp in the past couple of days, however most of the Yellows have been 10lbers.
Squid is a hot bait but Sardines are working as well.
You guys will need to do a little recon work around the Islands to get a good picture of what is happening now.
Be sure and send in those reports 😉

OFFSHORE
No Albacore yet…………
Very little if any up north off Oregon or Washington yet either so this just means the fish have not arrived yet. Could be any day now.
In fact they could be out there right now.
Weather has been super snotty way out to the west and Southwest so nobody really knows what is out there right now.
Some nice kelps on the Hidden bank and the Banda Bank. Some great looking water just west of Ensenada with Bonito
115 to 130 miles
No change….. The area is stable and the fishing for Kelp paddy Yellowtail is insane!
From 31.00 down to 30.00 and from the 117 line inside to 116.40 is where the majority of the Bluefin are being seen.
Wide open yellowtail kelp in the zone with most every boat coming here scoring limits of Yellows by 10am.
Lot’s of Bluefin are being seen, they just don’t want to bite very good. These are almost all 40 to 60lb fish with a few pushing 100lbs. Fish with 40lb test at least.
All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
If you go fishing please give us a call or shoot us an email.
