Santa Barbara / Ventura Areas
Calls around today yeilded no big news.
The Goleta white sea bass on bird schools bite has fell flat on it’s face.
Scratchy fishing at Santa Rosa Island for white sea bass and the wind is not letting boats get out there.
On the beach the reports from Deep Hole and the Power Plant squid beds were slow fishing for white sea bass. Lots of squid being mopped up.
Marina Del Rey
Squid has shown up at Hermosa Beach in 75′ of water off the pier. White sea bass and halibut are with it. Am bite.
Good calico bass fishing off Malibu for the calico guys.
Definitely take a look at Rocky Point with a tank of squid as well. The white sea bass that was on Huntington Flats is starting to move up the beach…

San Clemente Island
Pyramid Cove was open today. It allowed for the boats to fish the caves and squid beds which resulted in some yellowtail. Most of the action was in the morning as the current was running up hill. When the current died so did the bite. Boats went looking up the front side of the island trying to find current the rest of the day before junking out on rock cod to end their trips.
The back side of the island was reported green.

Commercial Fishing Vessels: Who has right of way?
Rule 3(d): http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=navRulesContent#rule3
(d) The term “vessel engaged in fishing” means any vessel fishing with nets, lines, trawls, or other fishing apparatus which restrict maneuverability, but does not include a vessel fishing with trolling lines or other fishing apparatus which do not restrict maneuverability.
Rule 26: http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=navRulesContent#rule26
Fishing Vessels
(a) A vessel engaged in fishing, whether underway or at anchor, shall exhibit only the lights and shapes prescribed in this Rule.
(b) A vessel when engaged in trawling, by which is meant the dragging through the water of a dredge net or other apparatus used as a fishing appliance, shall exhibit:
(i) two all-round lights in a vertical line, the upper being green and the lower white, or a shape consisting of two cones with their apexes together in a vertical line one above the other;
(ii) a masthead light abaft of and higher than the all-round green light; a vessel of less than 50 meters in length shall not be obliged to exhibit such a light but may do so;
(iii) when making way through the water, in addition to the lights prescribed in this paragraph, sidelights and a sternlight.
(c) A vessel engaged in fishing, other than trawling, shall exhibit:
(i) two all-round lights in a vertical line, the upper being red and the lower white, or a shape consisting of two cones with their apexes together in a vertical line one above the other;
(ii) when there is outlying gear extending more than 150 meters horizontally from the vessel, an all-round white light or a cone apex upwards in the direction of the gear.
(iii) when making way through the water, in addition to the lights prescribed in this paragraph, sidelights and a sternlight.
(d) The additional signals described in Annex II to these Rules apply to a vessel engaged in fishing in close proximity to other vessels engaged in fishing.
(e) A vessel when not engaged in fishing shall not exhibit the lights or shapes prescribed in this Rule, but only those prescribed for a vessel of her length.
What this means is that a commercial fishing vessel displaying the correct lights Red Over White or Green over White or Two cone shapes has right of way when performing Rule 3d.
In case of trawling or seining you must get out of the way if not anchored. If anchored the navigating ship must give way.
A light boat can not push you off a spot.
Common sense when setting up near a light boat is give them 1/8th mile for fishing and 1/4 mile down current as the seiner and light boat will drift 1/4 mile plus once the net is dropped.
Mission Beach
Light boat and seiner working the area. You must get out of the way of a commercial fishing operation or else risk a ticket from the Coast Guard. Sorry, nothing a sport fishermen can do.
Easy squid making last night.
Have not heard of any white sea bass or yellowtail caught in the area last night or this morning.
This evening 1 yellowtail caught off Mission Bay.
Mission was to take advantage of the Sea Bass bite going on at night.
After a 10 hr. day of work on Sat. 6/29 gathered the crew for a night of fishing. Girlfriend Deborah Miller(rookie season) and trusted crew Charlie Iwashita (seasoned vet).
Left Dana Landing headed for the grounds. Got there just before sunset and settled in for the night.
No wind slight swell.
Made bait and put the gear out.
Got our first bite approx. 11:30. 58.5 # hits the deck. Proceeded to get bites throughout the night. All on the balloon or flyline. No Dropper loop fish.
Total for the night 7. 58.5# 55.3# 45.3# 41.4# 37.0# 33.8# 29.3#. Deborah got 2 with #1 being her first ever.
Thank you both Deborah and Charlie for sharing the passion and a great evening on the water.

Torrey Pines
3 light boats and 3 seiners working all night. The boats we talked to checking out the area didn’t catch any white sea bass or yellowtail. There was some metered before the squid fleet went to work. More seiners and light boats on the way.
Offshore
San Clemente Basin
The Tribute on a 1 day found a few small bluefin schools in the San Clemente Basin. His count for the day of fishing in the area is 1 bonito and 1 yellowtail. The area is not wide open.
If one wanted to check out the area it’s around 32.30 x 118.00
80 Miles
The Eclipse caught a dorado this morning on the way to the 130 mile zone.
Not a lot of fish there yet but it’s the closest dorado to San Diego we have heard of yet.
Take a look above the Lower 500 along the temperature break that runs North West to South West in the block of 31.20 to 31.30 x 116.55 to 117.05.
130 Miles Offshore
Great news! Yellowfin, bluefin and limits of yellowtail.
Jig stops and kelps holding all the fish. The bluefin is sonar fish.
Nice weather, very consistent fishing.
Stops in the area of 30.31 x 116.57 and the whole fleet is working north with the fish.

Santa Rosa Island is hit and miss on the white sea bass as of late.
Take a look at Beechers bay and Eagles Nest. The wind is forecasted to blow so keep an eye on the weather before going that far.

Word is the Navy kicked everyone out of the cove last night. The cove is scheduled to be open this week. http://www.scisland.org/schedules/usageGoogle/usageGoogle.php
There is squid in Pyramid Cove as well as near the Caves.
The backside of the island is reported green.
The frontside of the island is where everyone is shoved in to and it is hit or miss on yellowtail and white sea bass.
The North West Harbor area has some fish as well if you can get in there.
The current has been very poor at the island.

Wind came up this morning and blew everyone out. South Wind reported 15-20+ knots.
Horseshoe
Anchovy schools moved in to the area of the red buoy at the end of the channel. One might take a look at fishing thresher sharks around the anchovy schools as some were seen off Newport a few days prior.
Windy and cold today.
Huntington Beach
Slow fishing for white sea bass last night on the Huntington Flats. Very good sand bass and barracuda fishing. Squid is for sale in front of Huntington Beach on the Long Beach Carnage, white boat, white lights CH 11.
White sea bass were thick last week around the structure spots in the flats all the way to the Huntington Pier. The magic depth was 75′ of water. The best numbers we had were 33.38.760 x 118.03.615
Take a look off Palos Verdes, Rocky Point area as traditionally it will bite next as the fish move in to the area.
Late report from Saturday am/pm – 6/29/2013.
Light coastal fog heading from Newport to the fleet in Huntington Beach.
We fished 4am Huntington fleet with approx 70 other boats. Everyone was pretty spread out from 80 feet on the outside to inner 55-60.
My gauge showed 65.7 degrees in the morning fog.
I saw a 44′ pacifica hook and land a seabass at 8am; a solid 30 pounder. That was the only croaker i saw to hit the deck.
There were a few other false alarms near us, including a long battle on the Mardiosa with what likely turned out to be a big ray.
Best ‘line’ we drifted was outside donz rig in about 12-13 fathoms. We drifted jigs with squid + flyline (no balloons) and covered good ground and meter marks. Came away with some jumbo sandbass up to 8 pounds, but not the right kind.
Bird, bait and fish activity seemed to peak around 7-830am (just before the low). At low tide, it went pretty silent.
Sandies had anchovies in their gut.
The pipe & the reef were pretty quiet, although that was just about at the swing coming off the low. Very few boats at the reef.
I peeked at the # 1 and 2 in newport on the afternoon high but just more sand bass to prove for it. With a little more current it might have have got going.
It was a touch windy and water temps rose to 68.1 recreational boaters and jet skiers made it seem like front street in Avalon – no mercy, and no boating sense at all. Can’t believe a seabass would even live in that chaos! – Ryan
Carlsbad
Lots of sardine schools along the beach off Tamarack.
La Jolla
The North West Corner of the kelp kicked out some barracuda and calico bass this morning for anglers fishing live squid they got from the Outer Banks light boat 1 mile north outside of Mission Bay.
The wind is up to 10 knots and it’s turned choppy at 10am.
Pacific Beach
The white sea bass bite on the squid beds 1 mile North of Mission Bay and at Crystal Pier remains slow. Only a few boats had bites early this morning. Nothing wide open.
Make all your squid from this area as the water temperature is cooler than everywhere else. The squid is not all spawned out like it is in the warmer water spots off Torrey Pines and Tijuana.
Coronado Islands
We were going to go west to look for tuna but changed that plan after looking at the weather. From what I heard on the radio that was a good call. Radio chatter was washing machine conditions at Hidden bank. Inner banks was OK weather wise but “NO FISH”.
Weather was really nice at the Island with 68.5 degree water in the morning rising up to 72 degrees in the afternoon.
Fished all around the Coronado Islands. The only place we caught any fish was on the NE side of South Island. The seals were thick and we lost many baits ( 6 to 8 inch sardines) to them.
Ended up the day catching 2 YT (14 and 8 #), Lost 2 others, 2 Calico’s (18 and 16 inches), and 18 or so barracuda’s up to 3 feet long (all released).
Bait was pretty bad, 1/2 of it rolled by 0900 and we were out by Noon. Made bait (Green Macks) using Sabiki’s by metering around and dropping down on bait balls.
Didn’t hook any YT on the green macks.
We’ll see about going out west during the 4th of July weekend.
Jerry (Boiler Maker) fishing on the AlbieNut
Offshore
9 Mile Bank
Karen aboard the Bubba Jean reported in:
Picked up sardines at the bait barge, caught 8 mackerel off the end of the barge, then headed out to troll the 9 Mile Bank for Mako.
Started at the North end around 10 am; 15 minutes later, we caught a small 70 lb. female Mako using my boyfriend’s homemade troll rig.
70 degree water in a calm sea.
In & out is what an efficient trip is all about!
Mako dinner @ 6:00 pm.

Empty kelp’s.
115-120 Miles
The 1.5 to 3 day fleet is working an area of bluefin and yellowtail along a temperature break that goes from 65.5 to 66.5F. The bluefin are on the cold side of the break and the yellowtail are on the warm side of the break. Yesterday dorado showed up in open water schools with the bluefin and also on kelp’s on the colder water side of the break.
Take a look in the area of 30.40 to 30.45 x 116.40 to 116.45.
The Dominator reported in to the landing with the first dorado of the year. They only landed one but hooked, lost and saw a lot of dorado for the day.

County Line
Jim on the Seaflyer reported in late last night:
Took the Skipjack to the County Line on Thursday.
Very nice conditions undera foggy sky. Got on site @ 5:15am and made a few squid….
Went to the ##’s for the Deep Hole for no squid, no fish, NADA.
Went back over to county line and set up West of the crowd of 6 private boats and 6 kayakers.
Made squid at an alarming rate….easiest ever! Pinned 2 on a 50lb fluoro dropper loop @ 8 cranks off the bottom in 82 ft.
A few sand dabs crashed the party and then WHAMMO! My rod goes off…..Fought him for about 5 minutes and brought him to a perfect gaff shot by Jon. We saw only 1 other small seabass by a kayaker all day…..went in @ 3:00PM.
There was alot of squid to make. My first in years of trying!!
Huntington Beach
The white sea bass fishing is far from wide open. We only heard of a few boats catching a seabass last night.
Really good barracuda and sand bass fishing all along the Huntington Flats area. Light boats everywhere. Pick a spot on the side of the fleet and catch some bass.
The Long Beach Carnage was selling squid in the area. Channel 11.
Matt aboard the Sea Konig reported about Thursday to Friday.
Decided to put the Blue Ghost on hold and Stay local to see what all the fuss what about in HB. FOG AND THE FLEET BABY!
Found the Mare Claire on our first pass and the brothers happily scooped us generous portions of the squirt bags! Thanks guys!
We started fishing off their port side for a bit. Metered squid beds a half mile away from them and dropped the hook!
Started at 4am and fished until 1pm.
Limits of Sandies up to 8lbs and Cudas.
Water was green, 66 and current was great today!
If we could have seen more than the fifty feet all day, I feel drifting around would have produced a biscuit or two!
The Options and Pacific quest dropped the hook next to us and I didn’t hear any hoop or hollering.
Overall fun day on the water showing a friend how to use his electronics and being part of total chaos reeling in a quality size local fish every two minutes!
Had to change our tactics from two rods to one each.
Tight Lines Sea Konig!
Catalina Island
Macalusoaj reported on the Fishdope Forums last night while making bait at Catalina Island.
Just picked up a 22 ,28, and 44 lb white seabass while making bait at the Isthmus high spot (33.27.30 x 118.29.40) all by 9:30 pm also the ripping current seems to be helping things.
Gibralter Reef 33.25.333 x 118.24.539 has been good fishing the last couple of days while the current is moving. Yellowtail and white sea bass have been caught there.
Lions head has good bass fishing as well as Eagle Reef. Eagle Reef also has squid that can be made for bait.
Mako’s in the channel
Went to Eagle Reef this morning and got enough barries to start my shark trip.
Headed out to my spot and set up my drift.
It took many hours but we finally had some small guys around the boat. Nothing but small makos are the story of my life right now. Had a big blue come by too .
Nowhere special just in the channel in 69 degree water.
Thank goodness it was a great day. See ya Tony
San Clemente Island
Lots of sport boats and yachts at the island overnight and today. Pyramid Cove was very slow with only 1 yellowtail and 1 small white sea bass caught for the fleet.
The backside of the island was reported slow fishing as well.
The frontside of the island from White Rock to the North had some spots of squid as well as a few white sea bass and yellowtail. There was no big bite and a ton of moving around spot to spot as the sea lions were a pest taking baits and hooked fish.
Water temp at the island is 65-68F and parts of the island on the backside and in the cove were reported off color green.
The DFG catamaran is at the island.
Dana Point
Slow fishing with dirty water still on the beach.
A few bass caught at the San Mateo Kelp where the water cleans up.
The Barn Kelp is the most promising as there were some short white sea bass caught along with a couple bigger yellowtail.
Mission Bay Squid
If you don’t want to make your own Tim aboard the Outer Banks is standing by with squid for sale. 1 mile North of the Mission Bay Jetty. He can be reached on CH11.
Crystal Pier
The squid beds off Crystal Pier and out in front of Mission Bay Jetties produced a few more tanker white sea bass last night. The fish bit for some around 6pm, 4am and again at 6-6:30am. 75-80′ of water find a parking spot. Estimated 75 boats in the area this morning.
Squid can be jigged in both spots, can’t miss the squid beds.
Fish in the middle of the water column. 30-40′ deep has been best.
La Jolla
Current out to sea most of the night. Did not hear of anyone catching.
Torrey Pines
Lots of boats headed here after Crystal Pier/Mission Bay as overflow. Lots of yelling and screaming as the Options from LA came down and decided he would own the spot. From what we heard fishing was tough and they didn’t get any fish.
Lots of boats fishing the area today as there is a halibut tournament going on.
Rosarito Flats
New squid bed has popped up in 140-150 feet of water between South Island Coronado and Rosarito.
Tons of squid there and it’s a virgin bed. 32.23.531 x 117.10.317
Coronado Islands
There hasen’t been much traffic at the islands this week.
The Ribbon Kelp has seen some flurries of yellowtail and barracuda as has South Kelp Ridge and even down at the Rockpile. The water temp is reaching 67F at the islands and where there is current you will find fish.
Make some squid at the new squid bed reported above to use for bait as most fish in the area will be keyed in to that squid.
Good sand bass fishing off the Bull Ring in 60-70 feet of water.
Local Offshore
A few boats offshore kelping and looking for marlin. The following areas were looked at and had NOTHING doing. Avalon Bank, The Slide, Mackerel Bank, 289, 181, 182, 9 Mile Bank, 226/302, 425, 371 and Hidden Bank.
A few empty kelps, no fish.
Overcast skies, average of 68-71F temperatures, hardly any wind and a 2′ swell.
