Mission Bay 3-5″ Anchovy

Channel Islands
County Line continues to be the HOT Spot. BIG Seabass up to about 70lbs are being caught right now. Night time just before Dawn is the best time.
Plenty of Squid around. Enough to jig your own to use as bait on the same spot.
Lot’s of Kayak’s fishing this bite. They are launching right off the beach and paddling out a 1/8th of a mile to the area.

Catalina Island
Headline story is still Yellowtail. When the current is running down and in or just down the Island the yellows are eager to come out and play. Slack current or an uphill and they are no where to be seen.
This morning there have been several schools of them seen. Lions-head had a good showing but the guys did not have Live Squid. They had Sardines. They managed to hook 1 but mostly the Yellows just ignored the Sardines.

San Clemente Island
Rough and snotty conditions!
The Navy has the cove and China Point areas closed again but the Lost Point and Eel point spots are open.
A slow but steady pick on BIG Yellowtail and a couple of Seabass are coming from these 2 spots
Squid is the bait of choice and you can make some at the Cherry Reef and the Dunes which is just off the Runway area.

The Barracuda fishing broke open this morning with really good action for at least 1 of 3/4 day boats.
The Enterprise called in with over 100 Cuda on the deck at 10am The action is said to be on the Anchorage area, Same location as the Sand Bass are biting at.
Yes there is a Squid Bed in the Barge Rock and Ribbon Kelp area. Quite a few Light boats and seiners are on it. Darrell Wilson is here making bait too.
Yes there are a few Seabass showing in the area. Nothing even close to good fishing but a few are being caught. Best bet is to make your squid and get away from all the noise and light and setup on a squid bed in the dark. Seabass are both Light AND noise sensitive! Get into a stealth mode and your odds will go way up!
Reporting for user name Monkeerow… fished the squid bed south of queens gate Saturday night the first night they set up…metered squid along a wide area. Big barracuda all over this stuff, easy wfo nighttime cuda bite on fresh frozen hugging bottom. No signs of seabass or at least through midnight squid didnt float to well for the 3 boats working it.
Last night a number of boaters ran right in on a Light boat as a Siener was beginning to make a set around it.
Hence this note..
Seabass Hunters………..
Please DO NOT setup close to the Squid Seiners and run your squid lights.
You are scattering both the Squid and the Seabass!
SPREAD OUT!! Give everybody some space.
This will greatly increase your odds of putting one of these big fish in your boat.
Give that Squid seiner at least 100 yards to work with. At that distance you’ll still be plenty close to get the job done
Darrell on the Mary Claire is parked off Huntington Beach and will likely be there in the morning as well.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

Seabass and a few Yellowtail continue to show at the Crystal Pier area. There is a Squid bed here that is attracting the fish.
Good Calico Bass fishing is happening along the kelp line right now. Most are shorts but the action is good.
Some schools of Jumbo Green Mackerel and short barracuda are at times being a pest.
The pic is from Steve Massey of a Tanker Seabass caught while making Squid.

TJ Flats
The Mexican Navy is cracking down on people using Squid lights and catching Squid for bait. Both are illegal in Mexico. So far no tickets have been issued. But they are giving out warnings.
Deck lights are fine, it is the over the rail and the in the water squid lights they are focusing on.
The Squid bed is HUGE!!! It is at least several miles long. Best bet is to motor around for a bit and find your own concentration of Squid and work that.
95% of the fish are biting the Fly line rigs with very few on the dropper loop rigs. Even floating your bait back under a Balloon with about 30 feet of leader is working very good.
These fish are NOT line shy. They are biting the 30 – 40lb test just fine. Don’t waste your time with the light tackle. You might miss out on the fish of a lifetime.
32.31.50 x 117.08.60 Bull Ring
32.28.40 x 117.09.10 Squid bed on the TJ Flats
Report from James out fishing on the New Lo-An:
Just got back from a 6pm Sunday -4pm Monday trip on the new Lo-An out of Point Loma, Seabass and yellowtail action has completely stopped on the TJ flats, not a single yellowtail or seabass on the boat after an entire night of fishing. The boat eventually moved closer to the island and fished the kelp for a few small yellowtail. The captain said he heard no reports of any other boats catching fish last night on the TJ flats as well. Making live squid was not a problem, even with the full moon.
OFFSHORE
Quiet still on the Offshore seen with little to no change.
There is good Kelp paddy Yellowtail action on the Hidden bank, The bottom end of the Upper Finger, and the Banda bank all have kelps that are holding.
If your after a Tuna the best bet is still to get down below Colenett at about 115 to 130 miles.
The area begins at the 31.00 line and extends down to the 30.00 line. Almost everything is on the 117 line and inside to roughly 116.40
Anywhere in this area the kelps are LOADED with ALL you want Yellowtail.
All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
If you go fishing please give us a call or shoot us an email.

Best shot at a Seabass is the Deep Hole at the County Line.
Wind is and has been an issue with the boats going to the Seabass bite at Santa Rosa and San Miguel has been out of the question.
Santa Cruz Island and Anacapa are both seeing pretty good Yellowtail action along with a handful of Seabass.
Try looking at the Yellow and Blue banks.

Report from John aka Buttchaser:
Great weekend of fishing from the kayaks. Fishing was not wide open, more like a slow pick….
The fish are up in the top water column chasing the squid around …
Metered a lot of seabass under the bait. We caught most of our fish using Carolina rigs with 1/8 sliding sinkers, Flyline and a few using a light glow /white jig and a couple on white lead heads.

Report from Jonathan on the Another Day:
Another fun weekend off fishing butt’s in SM bay. 6/22 Fished north of the SM pier 35-55ft 68.9 degree water for 2 of the right kind one about 8lbs and the other estimated release size 40 + inches. Figured she do better laying more eggs then on my dinner plate. back at the dock by 8.00 am. 6/23 This time just south of the pier 45ft-55ft 68 degree water. 2 more of the right kind one about 11 lbs and the other about 18 lbs says the bogga grip. back at the dock by 8.30 am. Fun fishing with lot’s of racked baits and missed bites while i drifted and cleaned fish…Cheers, Jonathan.
Catalina Island
Frontside:
Conditions changed up a bit along the front with the current switching around to an uphill flow.
This had the effect of shutting off the Yellow bite for many of the spots along the front. The Barracuda bite suffered as well.
Conditions did improve in the afternoon however and some yellowtail did pop up at Starlight.
1 boat there went 7 for 13 on the Yellowtail and got a bunch of Barracuda as well.
One thing not affected by the change in current direction was the Calico Bass.
They bit really well for almost everybody who tried for them at nearly every spot along the front. (backside too).

Backside:
Squid concentrations are at the Vee’s, Silver canyon, China Point and Ben Weston. A number of Light Boats and seiners are also here now working this new influx of Squid.
We don’t have any new reports of guys fishing back here except for Darrell Wilson working the Squid. He said he saw a few boats fishing the same areas we have been posting up for a few weeks now and heard they were catching fish but didn’t have any details to share with us.
Chances are high that there are both Seabass and yellowtail biting on both the inshore spots and a little outside of there on the squid Grounds.
Calico Bass and Sheephead are both biting good on most of the middle back and up to the west end. Banana Rock is always a great spot to look at for these fish.
Darrell sold out of Squid by 7am this morning. He will be back at it tonight making more though. Look for him early before dawn on the backside and after dawn near Avalon.

Report from Ryan Lawler on the Shark Bait:
Fished Catalina Sunday day. Worked the whole front side. Started at Starlight at 8am. Had live squid. Initially current was running uphill but changed within 20 min to exactly the opposite direction. Bait was up on the uphill and seemed to go away on the downhill. Overall best conditions we saw all day here but we didn’t have the patience to wait it out. Black Rock also had good downhill but not much going on, divers in the area confirmed no YT sightings. Continual nagging by halfmoon led us to abandon this spot. Isthmus reef was totally dead with no current and 0 signs of life. Yellowtail point had decent uphill current but no life save for some smelt. Hen Rock was pretty darn good on the calico bite with good uphill current by the time we hit it in the afternoon. Finished the day in tight at church rock, it looked good with bait being chased, nice current. Just some more calicos. Finished the day with at least 40 calicos of pretty average size. No sign of yellows. overall, pretty disappointing we couldn’t put anything together on the exotics. it was telling we didn’t even have any barracuda caught, which i usually associate with yellowtail action at the island. hope others did better than us. but around noon we saw all the sporties running uphill to the isthmus area; they must have fished east for little luck.
San Clemente Island
Yellowtail and Seabass both bit on the Backside of the Island over the weekend. Some VERY big Yellowtail were caught too!! Like the 47lb Yellow caught on the Fortune.
Squid is the bait of choice and you can make some at the Cherry Reef which is just off the Runway area.

A number of light boats were seen working about 2 miles south of Queens gate the last 2 nights. They must be on some Squid or they wouldn’t have stuck around for a 2nd night.
Could some Seabass be on this new squid area?? Good question. We’ll be on this possible breaking story for you, so stay tuned.
Sand bass and Sculpin in the evening is by far the best fishing. You can still find the Sandies on structure spots like the wrecks and Izors but more and more the fish are moving out over the mud to begin spawning. Seabass Hunters………..
Please DO NOT setup close to the Squid Seiners and run your squid lights.
You are scattering both the Squid and the Seabass!
SPREAD OUT!! Give everybody some space.
This will greatly increase your odds of putting one of these big fish in your boat.Give that Squid seiner at least 100 yards to work with. At that distance you’ll still be plenty close to get the job done
Dana Point
Crazy good Calico Bass action. Not many legal fish but all kinds of just barely short Bass. A couple of Yellowtail at Barn and Yellowtail Kelp seen so those fish are still around.
Some pretty good Sand bass fishing on spots really close to the Harbor. The 12 fathom spot appears to be loaded with pre spawn Sandies right now.

Report from Jack on the Mystic Freedom:
Fished out of Dana Sunday with 1/2 scoop of chovies. Took to non-fisher persons from Utah out to San Clemente Kelp. Started around 1pm and fished until 4pm. Caught loads of Calicos, with about one in five a keeper. Kept a 15″ Calico, a 15″ & 16″ Sand Bass. Lost two fish in the kelp that had to be keepers. Non stop action on shorts. Two of the keepers came on plastic, one on a chovie. kept a constant chum line going. Thanks for the recent tip on throwing plastic during the bite. It worked!
Oceanside
Still Squid at Torrey Pines but the word we are getting is this stuff is now scattered and the squid bed is broken up. There is some talk of a couple of Seabass being caught in the area now but we can not confirm this.
Else where the Leucadia kelp is hot for Calico Bass. Anchovy for chum and Squid for hook bait is scoring some impressive bass.
Not much else of anything to talk about though. No talk of any Yellowtail or legal sized Barracuda.

Fishdope member Craig called in to report some Seabass and Yellowtail action happening at Crystal Pier. He got a 35lb fish in the pre dawn hours and heard other people on other boats catching fish too.
There were several Light boats working for Squid and he was able to jig up all he needed in just a few minutes.
Good Calico Bass fishing is happening along the kelp line right now. Most are shorts but the action is good.
Some schools of Jumbo Green Mackerel and short barracuda are at times being a pest.

The Mexican Navy is cracking down on people using Squid lights and catching Squid for bait. Both are illegal in Mexico. So far no tickets have been issued. But they are giving out warnings.
Deck lights are fine, it is the over the rail and the in the water squid lights they are focusing on.
As for the fishing the bite continues although slower for most than it had been. 99% of the big Seabass are coming during the middle of the night

Report from Louie on the It’s 4 Reels:
Yesterday Jeff and Richard booked a dive/fishing trip with the hopes of shooting a big sea bass and catching some yellows and Pancheke would be our deckhand for the day. After a several hours traveling and diving it was no go on the sea bass but yours truly managed 2 nice ling cod fishing plastics on the anchor outside the kelp beds that Jeff & Richard were diving. The VHF was going off with reports of small yellows at the island so headed there loaded with spanish and green back macks that we made off the kelp beds. We arrived at the north end of Todos Santos around 2PM and the fishing had slowed a bit. We slow trolled our baits and picked up a nice calico under overcast skies. As soon as the sun came out the light switch turned on and the yellows began to go off. The key was live bait. While others slow trolled baits and rapalas we would l ook for breaking fish on the surface and cast baits and wait for them to come through. We hooked several fish and brought in 6 yellows in the 8-14lb. range and a 2 more big calicos. The bite slowed and it was getting dark so made one last run to the San Miguel Reef. The bigger yellows were here and we boated 5 more in the 15-20lb. range and 1 more large calico. We ended the day with 11 yellows (8-20lbs.) with several others lost to pulled hooks, 4 calicos (4-7lbs.) and 3 ling cod.

Caught 3 YT at 32.21.50 x 117.32.40 on Saturday around 1pm on a paddy. Looked at 4 other big ones before this one for nothing. water temp here was 66.8 Water just got warmer as we travelled west from the 425.the yellows were 8.1,8.8, and 11.8 I went down to 25lb test and a 1/0 hook to get bit.
All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·

SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE TONIGHT
The County Line / Deep Hole spot continues to be the HOT spot for White Seabass up in this area. Flyline Squid is the ticket for hooking one of these big brutes, many oh which are running over 40lbs and as big as 65lbs.

Report from Tony on the Hunter:
Saw some good water temp near the boot so decided to head Straight out from Mdr. Water was as the chart said 67 and 68 degrees. Water was very confused and a bit rough, but not bad at all. The drift was lightning fast it was like I was trolling. We had to chum hard to keep the slick consistent. All we managed was small makos to notice. I didn’t even put a line in the water. Oh we’ll it’s just fuel right? Ran out of chum early because we had to hit it so hard so we were in by 2. Well maybe next time.
See ya Tony
Catalina Island
One of the Go to spots right now!
Starting on the frontside there are Yellowtail on nearly every spot. Live Squid and Current are the keys to success.
Some of the better spots yesterday were the k-20, Hen Rock, Blackrock, Lionhead, and Starlight spots.
All the spots are loaded with calico Bass. A surprising number of these are legal 14″+ fish too. Topping off the action is some Barracuda. These are ranging from just short to 8lbs. These fish are willing to bite the Iron.
The Mary Claire is out in front of Avalon with 30+ scoops of Squid as of 10am.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

On the backside the story remains unchanged.
Some 20lb grade Yellowtail and Seabass pushing the 40lb mark continue to show from church Rock to china point. This is all about fishing the conditions. Find that spot with some down hill current that is just strong enough to pull the kelp down a bit and has the milky green color with some foam on it. If you find this sit on it and wait them out. They will come and find you.
Dropper loop or a sliding sinker rig with a 6/0 to 8/0 ahi twist hook and a pair of squid pin on is the ticket for a seabass. Fish the 40lb! These fish are not line shy! With the heavy line you stand a much better chance of getting them out of the kelp if they get into it.
Yellows are showing too in the same area and the same gear is working on them as well.
Squid is being found through out this area too. Locate a spot of birds sitting on the water at sunset and that will turn into squid during the night. Best times is right at sunset and again just before sunrise.
Calico Bass and Sheephead are also chewing good. Try the middle back spots like Banana Rock for these.

Report from Matt on the Sea Konig:
Headed out of Huntington Beach and pointed the Konig towards the East End of Catalina around 11pm Friday night with a couple of Sea Konig teammates. Anchored up next to the squid boats near China point for a pick on calicos, mud marlins and sheephead until gray light. Water 61.5 current moving uphill. Anchored in a few different spots until we met up with the fleet near Silver Canyon. Upon our second drift 70′ (within 20′ of an anchored boat) the rod bent and the chase was on. He burned through a couple hundred yards of line before I had the upper hand. I realized at that point (I’m that guy) all the other boats just staring at me through binocs or hearing they are hooked up. Great feeling and the pressure was on. Of course it isn’t easy with these ghost so when the first gaf attempt set in his dorsal fin and tore right through I was ready to fire my deck hand (Goodwin) and promote (Levy) but with the second gaf right on the money there was no need for the crew change. Later in the day around 11am we sunk the gaf into Whitey’s twin our second 33lber of the day! The bite didn’t seem like it was game on like last week even with the good current. One of the boats did catch a Yellow. Next trip will be off shore looking for the blue ghost…

White Seabass were on the chew this morning on the Backside at Lost and Eel Points. Several boats made good scores of 20 to 35lb Seabass.
The Frontside from Gold Bluff down to white Rock and Purse seine Rock are seeing good numbers of Yellowtail.
The Navy has the cove closed again until further notice.
Plenty of Squid at Cherry reef which is right out from the Runway.

Sand bass and Sculpin in the evening is by far the best fishing. You can still find the Sandies on structure spots like the wrecks and Izors but more and more the fish are moving out over the mud to begin spawning. Find a big pile up on your fish finder and anchor up on it. Chum them with bits of squid and soon you’ll get a non-stop

Dana Point to Oceanside
Crazy good Calico Bass fishing. Most are shorts but the action is fast and furious. Anchovy and Plastics are fueling this bite.
Just about any thick kelp spot is loaded with hungry bass.
Yellowtail are teasing guys at Barn San Onofre and at times San Mateo kelp beds. Once in a while one will grab a sardine or an Anchovy. If someone brought up a tank of Torrey pines Squid the bite might be pretty good.
A few odd Barracuda round out the surface action.

Oceanside
Report from Edward on the Fo Reel:
Hey guys! Fished out of oceanside today for some stupid bass action. Somewhat choppy out there today so we kept it local and headed to the artificials north of the harbor with some anchovy and were on em right away. Found a good pile in about 50 ft and the action was non stop. Caught a smaller sheepshead and some sandbass but most of the action was on calico. They were going wild on the fly lined anchovy but the bigger models came off the bottom. Also got a small halibut and lost a good fish due to a line issue i neglected to take care of, never saw him but felt like the right kind. After Thursday and today’s action I’m suffering from a severe case of bass thumb, but I heard its been goin around lately…
Torrey Pines
Squid are still here but scattered up somewhat due to squid netting. So far we don’t have any confirmed reports of any Seabass being caught but there is some talk of a few being caught. The chances are that at some point the Seabass will find this stuff so the idea isn’t completely out of the question
Leucadia Kelp has a decent Bass bite happening. The squid is working great as bait for some nicer grade, legal sized fish. Your likely to see some just short barracuda as well.

A couple of Yellowtail were caught near the Crystal Pier Squid spot yesterday for some guys fishing in the Yellowtail Shoot-out. Then again this morning a few more Yellowtail and a few Seabass were caught on Squid made at Crystal Pier.
Good Calico Bass fishing is happening along the kelp line right now. Most are shorts but the action is good.
Some schools of Jumbo Green Mackerel and short barracuda are at times being a pest.

TJ Flats
Middle of the night Seabass fishing continues to be a good choice. 25 to 60lb Seabass are being caught during these hours. Last night the bite was slower than the past few nights however. The bite slows way up at day break however. Some large Yellowtail in the 25 to nearly 40lbs are also being caught. Nearly all of these fish are biting during the day time.
Everything is on Live Squid, which is pretty easy to jig up.
This area / Squid bed is huge! It is several miles long. You don’t need to be in the crowd to make a big score. Look around a little bit away from the big collection of boats and find a good mark of Squid and set up on it. The Seabass and Yellowtail will find you.
The Mexican navy is stopping almost everybody to check for ID and Fishing permits. Be sure to have your paperwork in order just in case they stop you.

South Kelp and the Ridge had a showing of Yellowtail at mid day and into the afternoon. No great bite but there was at least some action.
A few other scatter fish were caught around through the Island chain as well.
Right now the best tactic appears to slow troll a live Sardine or set up on the Anchor and fish a Live Squid

Report from Louie on the It’s 4 Reels:
Had to fuel up for a last minute charter for Sunday. A couple of very cool guys let us have some of there left over bait and conditions looked good so we headed for Todos Santos Island around 2:30pm.
Reel Adventure called us into a paddy that was loaded 5 miles outside of Todos. We arrived at 4pm and caught 5 nice 10-14lb yellows and 1 big bonito. Reel Adventure caught 18 yellows with the largest being 40lbs on the digital scale. they also had 4 large bonito.
31.45 x 116.53 was the location of the magic paddy.
Most fish caught on a variety of live bait. I did manage to catch 2 nice fish using surface iron.

Fair amount of Kelps in this region but only about 1 in 15 in holding anything. If you do find one that is holding Yellowtail the Quality is often very good.
Most are 15lb fish with some bigger and only a few smaller.
BTW The current SST is not correct with the temps. A thin cloud layer distorted the readings. The water temp is closer to 65/66 than the 59 degrees shown in the pic.
Hidden bank
This area along with the Upper Finger Bank / Banda bank are the best “Local” offshore areas right now. Most kelps are holding at least some Yellowtail. A few kelps are holding LOT’s of Yellows.
These are all mixed up in size. You might hit one kelp with 8 to 10lb fish and a 1/4 mile away another kelp might be holding nothing but 20 to 30lb Yellows.
There are also plenty of schools of 15lb class fish being found. Over all the quality of these Kelp paddy fish is far better than in past years.
The following is some kelp numbers from yesterday afternoon as well as ones from this morning. The region remains stable and not moving very much.
This area is centered at 31.48 x 117.17. Most of these are holding a mixed grade of Yellowtail.
31.47 x 117.17 Yellowtail Kelp
31.49 x 117.19 Yellowtail Kelp
31.48 x 117.17 Multi grade Yellowtail on this one
31.47 x 117.16 Mixed grade of Yellowtail on a kelp
130 Miles
Excellent fishing for Yellowtail continues down just below the 31.00 line.
A kelp at 30.55 x 116.41 produced 70 Yellowtail for 1 San Diego Sportfisher. Lot’s more kelps in the same area make catching limits for all an easy deal.
Bluefin continue to be seen in the same area but are tough to get interested in biting.
One concentration of Bluefin was found at 31.01 x 116.53
