Channel Islands
SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 3 PM PDT THIS AFTERNOON
…GALE WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 3 PM PDT THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH LATE TONIGHT…
Weather is playing a factor on where you can fish BUT there are Seabass in many areas right now.
You can find them on the coast at the Deep Hole/ county line area, and on the squid bed off the Power plant. The latter spot is more miss than hit though.
Anacapa Island still has a decent shot at either a yellowtail or a Seabass.
At Santa Cruz the Yellow and Blue banks have Yellowtail along with a few Seabass.
Santa Rosa Island has Seabass and a few big flatties in Beecher’s Bay and a few fish have been caught at the Eagles nest too.

Santa Barbara Island and San Nicholas Island
SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE SUNDAY NIGHT
No recent reports due to poor weather conditions

Catalina Island
Very good fishing right now at the island. There are Yellowtail on nearly every single spot from the East End on up to the West End along the frontside.
No huge volume of fish on any one spot but rather they are scattered all along the island. Calico Bass are snapping great as well. Live Squid is what you need to get in on this action.
Good numbers of Barracuda are showing too. these fish are roaming up and down the Island and not really living on anyone spot.
All of this is dependant of a nice current running. This morning the current is weak to slack and as a result the fishing is on the slow side. This will most likely change as soon the water begins to move.

UPDATE: Gabriel Cabellos, Capt. of the Native Sun called in this report:
There was some really good fishing for a mixed bag of Yellowtail barracuda and calico Bass on the Native Son today up near the west end at Starlight. The guys went 7 for 13 on the Yellowtail and almost all you want of the other 2 kinds of fish. They also caught a bunch of Opaleye’s too. It was one of those 1 stop good days of fishing that everybody remembers.

On the Backside the story is the same as it has been for quite some time now.
White Seabass are showing at night and at Grey light. Dropper loop or a sliding sinker rig with a 6/0 to 8/0 ahi twist hook and a pair of squid pin on is the ticket for a seabass. Fish the 40lb! These fish are not line shy! With the heavy line you stand a much better chance of getting them out of the kelp if they get into it.
Yellows are showing too in the same area and the same gear is working on them as well.
Squid is being found through out this area too. Locate a spot of birds sitting on the water at sunset and that will turn into squid during the night. Best times is right at sunset and again just before sunrise.
Decent shot at a 20 to 30lb Yellowtail too. These are mostly on the Squid grounds, in the same areas as the White Seabass.
Calico Bass and Sheephead are also chewing good. Try the middle back spots like Banana Rock for these.

Darrell on the Mary Claire sold out of Squid by 7am this morning but the “Don’s Rig” is sitting on the Backside at China Point with Squid for sale.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

Report from Charles Roberts:
Got a nice scoop of squid from Nacho at 5 am this morning.  Fished Hen Rock at 6:30 then Empire Landing area for two yellowtail and lots of Calico.  Stopped and Izors on the way home and caught and released 10 big sand bass.  Nice day on the water.

San Clemente Island
Yellowtail are really turning now. The fish are showing at the Northwest harbor, down the back at Lost and Eel points. Some fish at China Point this morning as well but the Navy has this spot closed again tomorrow and for many days after that.
Plenty of Squid at Cherry reef which is right out from the Runway.

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
Sand bass are building up out on the Mud of the Huntington Flats. The evening are still by far the best time to get them but the daytime bite is showing signs of improvement.
The area just to the south of Izors is an area to have a good look at.
Calico Bass are biting too. These fish are showing good at Palos Verdes along with most of the rockpiles over the Horseshoe and also down off The Newport reef and even on the River pipe.
South of Newport the calico are biting good at the 1/2 spot along with the #1 and #2 spots.
Few spots of barracuda found once in a while but not much volume. These fish just really never did show up well this year, at least so far.
No local Yellowtail recently. That buoy #1 spot is turning up mainly short calico bass and Sculpin now.

Dana Point to  South of Oceanside
Very good to excellent C&R action on Calico Bass. Only about 1 in 10 is a legal 14″ fish though. If you have some Anchovy to chum with the bite goes crazy! You can increase your odds of hooking a bigger Bass by using plastics though.
Rumors once again of Seabass showing at Salt Creek and the Clemente Reef. We have not seen any of these fish so we can’t confirm this.
At the Barn Kelp and at San Onofre some Yellowtail are being seen and caught. The numbers however are not great. Just a fish here and there kind of thing.

Report from Mark Austin on the Heritage:
Crazy hot Calico bass bite on anchovy at Seal rocks and the inner deep kelp line outside San Clemente State park. Plucked a few nice bass at seal rock early in the am. Then moved to near wide open Calico bite deep in the kelp. Light tackle and super small hooks. FUN FUn Fun!~~~~ Go Fishing…..

Torrey Pines
A good number of Squid boats are working this area every night.
So far it doesn’t appear to have any game fish on it. This stuff got hit hard by the Squid fleet and the stuff got scattered around. Still a bunch here. Plenty enough to make bait with
Leucadia Kelp has a Bass bite going on. The squid is working great as bait for some nicer grade, legal sized fish. Your likely to see some just short barracuda as well.

La Jolla / Point Loma
If any Yellowtail or Seabass were caught overnight or this morning they are keeping it a secret. The bite is all about Calico Bass. LOT’s of Calico Bass. Most are shorts but the action is good.
Some schools of Jumbo Green Mackerel and short barracuda are at times being a pest.

TJ Flats
Tremendous volume of boats working this area this morning. Got a few reports of catches but for the most part the guys aren’t talking. This is due in large part to the Yellowtail Shoot-out happening today.
Last night however the bite on the Seabass was awesome! Lot’s of guys scored fish, even with all the Mexican gill nets being strung out.
Notice: The Mexican navy is stopping almost everybody to check for ID and Fishing permits. Be sure to have your paperwork in order just in case they stop you.

Coronado Islands
95% of the attention is focused on the Flats today so reports from here are few and far between.
Right now slow trolling a Sardine on 25 to 30lb test around through the Gap, Middle ground and down past Ribbon Kelp.
The weather side of North Island and South Islands is worth a shot as well.
The southern end of North Island on the weather side is famous for big Yellowtail.

425 / upper Hidden Bank / Upper Finger Bank
Report from Garrett:
Long story short, bad bait from MB, a little rough going, great weather after 3pm.  Fished 425 to nearly upper hidden then over to upper finger.  15 some odd paddies.  All dry, but one holding bait and about a 500lb Moonfish.  The other paddy had a lot of YT on it pretty much right on top of the upper finger.  Could not get them excited though and only ended up with 3 fish between 8 and 12 lbs .  They loved chasing the orca and wax wing, but we got our three on the 5-7″ sardines the bait barge served us.  Oh did I mention there are BFT on the 425.  There is, we threw the kitchen sink at them for nothing.  Lots of life and paddies around the 425 though.  The attached picture is real fish dope 🙂  Found NE of the upper hidden.  We did the right thing and sunk it to Davey Jones Locker.

Hidden Bank
There is a kelp zone SE of the Hidden bank numbers. This area is centered at 31.48 x 117.17.  Most of these are holding a mixed grade of Yellowtail. 8 to 10lb fish and some larger.

31.49 x 117.19 Yellowtail Kelp
31.48 x 117.17 Multi grade Yellowtail on this one
31.47 x 117.16 Mixed grade of Yellowtail on a kelp

decent number of kelps found holding a good amount of Yellowtail. Some larger grade fish too.
31.54 x 117.57 Large Volume of Yellowtail on a kelp
31.53 x 117.49 10×30′ kelp Mixed grade Yellowtail.

295 area
Some very large kelps are being found in this area. Pretty good volume of Yellowtail on most of them.
31.36 x 117.25 Large double kelp w/Yellowtail
31.32 x 117.27 Large kelp 10 to 15lb class Yellowtail.

June 21st – 23rd
The 2013 Yellowtail Shootout is this weekend! Captain’s Meeting is TONITE!!
Don’t miss out on your chance for great fishing, competition, prizes, food and family fun. June 21st, 22nd and 23rd, it is going to be the best tournament yet.
The yellowtails are still biting and within the reach of everyone. New this year, awards for 1st through 5th place will be given to the heaviest aggregate of three fish. The biggest fish gets a grand prize and can also count towards the 3-fish aggregate.
The 2013 Yellowtail Shootout kicks off with the mandatory Captain’s Meeting on Friday, June 21st from 6 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at San Diego Boats, located next to the Dana Landing Market on Mission Bay. Mission Bay has a relaxed atmosphere and plenty of free parking. Fishing begins on Saturday, June 22nd and culminates with the “After Party” Awards Banquet on Sunday, June 23rd at 11 a.m.
We’ve also waived the late fee this year. You can still get in on all the action for $300 per team. The entry fee will cover three anglers as well as Tournament Entry, Official Tournament Shirt, Official Tournament Visor, Angler Goody Bag and Full Access to the Awards Party.
Every team gets a tourney bag, and the contents of each bag are valued at more than $100 of great giveaways from our sponsors. If you like door prizes and raffles, there will be plenty, with some amazing things to win. But if you really want to cash in, take advantage of the optional Winner Take All Jackpots of $100, $200, and $300 per team.
The “After Party” Awards Banquet will be held at San Diego Boats and Phil’s BBQ will be catering. The After Party will also have a raffle and Vendor Village showcasing all of the gear available from sponsors. The public is welcome to the Vendor Village.

Catalina Island
Frontside:
A very good choice of spots to fish right now! Yellowtail are scattered all along the front side of the Island. Nearly every spot is holding at least a few fish. A couple of the better spots are Frog Rock, K-20 Red Bluff, Black rock and Lions Head. That isn’t meant to say you couldn’t run into a big bite at any other spot though. The yellows are living on almost every spot now.
The ticket to getting one of these 10 to 20lb fish is LIVE SQUID! Don’t even bother trying anything else. The yellows are super keyed up on this stuff and ignoring everything else.
Also all along the front side are roaming schools of Barracuda. Some just barely short and ranging up to 8lb logs These fish will bite on the Iron, Sardine and the Squid.
Calico Bass fishing is, right now, the best it has been all year. All the spots are holding with a fairly good number of legal sized fish. Some huge Bass are still on the boiler rock spots if your interested in catching a Bass over the 5lb mark

Capt. Dave Hansen http://www.yoursaltwaterguide.com 1(949)374-0786 reported in this morning with a couple of Hugo, Ray and Paul. They are fishing the Blackrock spot and have gone 4 for 7 on the Yellowtail. They are seeing a pretty good sized school of them too.
They made a move to Lions head at 1pm and added 1 more yellow to the total.
The 2nd shot is of Paul with his first ever Yellowtail.

Backside:
Some 20lb grade Yellowtail and Seabass pushing the 40lb mark continue to show from church Rock to china point. This is all about fishing the conditions. Find that spot with some down hill current that is just strong enough to pull the kelp down a bit and has the milky green color with some foam on it. If you find this sit on it and wait them out. They will come and find you.
Calico Bass and Sheephead are also chewing good. Try the middle back spots like Banana Rock for these.
Darrell Wilson on the Mary Claire is heading to Catalina today and should have squid by tomorrow morning.
The Pacific Carnage will also likely be there sitting in front of Avalon in the morning. Hail them on Channel 11.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

Running out here is a gamble! You may or may not get kicked out in spite of what the website says.
It appears now the Island security has changed the schedule and the Cove, Caves and China Point areas will be open from 4am to 6pm on Saturday.
It also shows the backside spots like Lost Point, Eel Point and Cherry reef to be open all day and night
There are Yellowtail out here biting along the backside of the Island. The Eldorado got 15 for 14 passengers yesterday.

LA Harbor
A mix of Sand Bass and Sculpin is the primary catch. Very few barracuda as of late.
Best bite is in the evening. live or Fresh dead squid is the bait of choice although plastics like the Berkley Gulp is working good too.
No Yellowtail or Seabass lately.

Newport Beach
Really good Calico Bass and Sheephead are biting in the am hours along with a good sample of Sculpin. Twilight’s are getting the San Bass
The Sand Bass are in the pre-spawn mode and starting to build up in big schools. Some of these are now moving out onto the Huntington Flats.

Dana Point
Silly, stupid good Calico Bass fishing! Problem is 95% are short, 12 to 13 inch fish. Still great fun for the C&R guys.
Yellowtail are being seen again. Most of these are at the Barn kelp. San Onofre also saw a few.
No much from the Barracuda that are legal sized. fair numbers of 22″ models though
Lastly some Seabass are reported to be around Salt Creek and the clemente Reef. No verified catches in recent days that we know of however.

Torrey Pines
Lot’s of Squid on a large bed is off Torrey Pines. A good number of Squid boats are working it nightly now.
33.04.000 x 117.18.500  Leucadia Kelp
32.57.000 x 117.16.750  Del Mar Kelp

La Jolla / Point Loma
A large Yellowtail is possible at the North West Corner, the upper edge of the MPA and again at the southern edge of the MPA. Expect a very large amount of boat traffic here on Saturday with the regular crowd and the Yellowtail shoot-out crowd both being on the water.
Really good Calico Bass fishing is happening along the kelp line right now. Most are shorts but the action is good.
Some schools of Jumbo Green Mackerel and short barracuda are at times being a pest.

32.51.34 x 117.16.62  The Cove
32.47.58 x 117.16.58· Pacific Beach Artificial Reef – Crystal Pier

TJ Flats
A few Seabass caught over night but there are now a tonnage of boats along with a bunch of Mexican gill nets.
20 to 30 lb yellowtail are also in the mix as well.
Yesterday the Blue Horizon made a great score boating 12 White Seabass and 15 Yellowtail.
Everything is on the live Squid. With the coming full moon it is going to get hard to get this stuff to float. You might have to jig it to make any bait.
Here’s a tip…..Squid are hard to get to float under a full moon. They will often come up and linger just on the outside of the light field you are putting out. When this happens, KILL the big brite lights and switch over to a single small underwater light. This very often draw them in tight to your boat so you scoop them.
Also with a full moon phase the best times to make bait are in the very early evening and even better is at grey light right around 4:30am
32.31.50 x 117.08.60  Bull Ring
32.28.40 x 117.09.10  Squid bed on the TJ Flats

Report from Rick Huckleberry:
Hit the TJ Flats spot from 7pm to 3am last night. Water temp 64.4. Made 20 pieces of Squid on Sabiki rigs.
caught 5 Barracuda between 7pm and 10pm.
11pm hooked there first Seabass, but lost it to a Sea Lion. At 1am they hooked another and landed it. 43lbs. At 2am hooked and landed another Seabass. This one went 49 lbs.
All the fish came on the Live Squid fished on a 30ft leader under a Balloon. Strong downhill current with 6 to 8mph wind until late when the current turned up hill.
Called it a night at 3am

Evening update: This Squid bed is huge. Lot’s of boats are concentrated on the numbers but the bed stretches down to the south for about a mile. Tomorrow with the big crowds we advise that you look a little below the crowd for your own Squid bed. The Magic depth is 80feet!! No deeper or shallower.
Remember if you are in the Shoot-out there is NO FISHING until 5:45am Good Luck!!

Coronado Islands
Spotty at best. Once in a while somebody hits it big but most don’t. No one area stands out as being the go to spot.
Right now slow trolling a Sardine on 25 to 30lb test around through the Gap, Middle ground and down past Ribbon Kelp.
The weather side of North Island and South Islands is worth a shot as well.
The southern end of North Island on the weather side is famous for big Yellowtail. Might be a decent spot to work over if your fishing in the Shoot-out.
32.26.85 x 117.18.23  Pukey Point
32.25.80 x 117.16.80  Middle Grounds

32.17.50 x 117.10.50  Rockpile
32.17.00 x 117.09.50  Rockpile #2

Ensenada
Lots of Yellowtail and Barracuda around but the bite is slow. The fish that are being caught are stuff full of finbait.
Fish are being seen between the Island and Punta Banda, At the Island and the other gap near San Miguel reef.
Most of the action right now is on trolled Rapalas and Xraps but a few are coming on slow trolled Sardines brought down from San Diego.
Yellowtail are on Kelps along with some Bluefin are being caught just a dozen or so miles out to the west. This is the better option right now
31.48.000 x 116.46.000  The Gap
31.51.476 x 116.40.071  Barracuda Area
31.46.800 x 116.41.000  Punta Banda

OFFSHORE
Just like yesterday there isn’t very good conditions offshore today. Steep short period swell with 15mph wind.
This is keeping most guys from venturing out to have a look around. This being the case, new fresh dope is going to be very hard to come by today.
The following is a collection of dope gather over the past week that is still relevant.

The 425 to the 371 zone has some scattered kelps with a good number of 15 to 20lb yellows. A few larger models have been found in recent days too.

The Upper Hidden bank, just west of Ensenada has some great looking water with Bonito. Bluefin were also seen in this area on Saturday.
32.21 x 117.19 Yellowtail Kelp
32.06 x 117.29 Yellowtail Kelp
32.04 x 117.29 Yellowtail kelp

475 Knuckle has a few kelps but but there are schools of open water yellows breezing and being found by color spots and jig stops.
Some of the Yellowtail in this area have been big fish in the 25 to 30lb class.
31.59 and up to 32.01 x 117.00  Multiple schools of Big Bonito

Inside of the 238
31.23 and up to 31.25 x 116.56 to 117.01 Large area of clean water and lot’s of BIG Bonito in it. Water temp 66.1
From Mondays report
Schools of Bonito along with Kelp paddy yellowtail are in this area.
31.10 x 117.24  Large Kelp with a good grade of Yellow on it.
31.32 x 117.10  Purple Water Kelps holding

115 to 130 miles
From 31.00 down to 30.00 and from the 117 line inside to 116.40 is where the majority of the Bluefin are being seen.
Wide open yellowtail kelp in the zone with most every boat coming here scoring limits of Yellows by 10am.
Lot’s of Bluefin are being seen, they just don’t want to bite very good. These are almost all 40 to 60lb fish with a few pushing 100lbs. Fish with 40lb test at least.
30.00 and 31.00 x 116.40 to 116.50 was the best Bluefin area

220 to 250 miles
Tonnage of Bluefin! Lots of 50lb class fish with several over the 100lb class. Some boats made scores of up to about 90 tuna in a single day. Yellowtail are thick on the Kelps and there is also a few Dorado. Not much signal from Yellowfin down in the area anymore. No idea where they went off to.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·

2013 Yellowtail Shootout Presented by Costa
June 21st – 23rd
The 2013 Yellowtail Shootout is this weekend! ONLY 1 DAY from now!!

Yellowtail are being found all along the front side of the Island. They are not in big schools now but rather they are living on the spots.
Live Squid is the ticket to getting bit. These fish are ranging from 10lbs to the 20lb class.
Still some Seabass showing on the back from Church to China Point. Every morning a local skiff or 2 manages to score one back there. A few Big Yellowtail being caught too.
The numbers of Squid are building up in this same area as the seabass are in. With this coming moon phase it will likely get hard to get a float but you should still be able to get enough to use for bait with Squid Jigs.
The Mary Claire is heading for Catalina later this afternoon. With any luck they will have Squid by morning.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

Newport Beach
Sand Bass! The bass are now going into spawning mode and they are out on the mud and chewing. Some fish are still on the Newport reef and at the western edge of Newport Canyon along with the Pipe but more and more are heading out onto the Huntington Flats.
Look for a pile up from near the bottom to roughly half way up your meter. Sand Bass give a good return signal to your fish finder so seeing them with it is pretty easy.
Setup and anchor just above them so your baits will drift down to them. Chumming with bits of Squid or using a chum bucket works pretty good.

Report from Lia at Newport Landing:
Patriot is running open party ¾ day daily and continues to have excellent sand bass fishing with limits to near limits on quality sand bass to over 7 pounds along with limits on sculpin daily.  The sand bass are biting throughout the water column and are in pre spawn mode.
The Nautilus has been running daytime and twilight trips with some good bass fishing to over 6 pounds along with couple halibut and misc other species.  Water temps are up to 67 degrees and fish are becoming very aggressive biting live anchovies and plastics.

Like to C&R calico Bass?? The bite is very good right now for 13 inch Bass. 1 in 10 is larger though and 1 in 10 of those is a big boy in the 5 to 7lb class.
Yellowtail have been spotted again at Barn Kelp although no biters yet. A few Sheephead, Halibut
Seabass are still being found once in a while, by guys hunting for them. Right now the best bait for them locally is a Live Mackerel on a dropper loop or an egg sinker rig while working spots of bait.
Salt Creek and the Clemente Reef are 2 of the better prime spots to look at right now.

Report from Edward on the Fo Reel:
Hey guys! Headed out today from oside with a few friends, left about 6:30 and got a mixed half scoop of chovies and dines and headed to the barn kelp. Stopped off the golf balls on the way up just to see whats happenin, metered a few clouds of bait (I assume) hangin low and saw a few decent marks which I assume were bass. Just wanted to check so we kept headin to the barn. The dogs were on their morning walk so we had to move a few times before we could ditch them but finally ended up getting into a nice bass bite, fish ranged in the 6 to 22 inch category. The bigger fish were caught on dines mostly but you had to wait a while to get picked up, like a minute.. the chovie bite was instant. Eventually ran out of bait and could only jig up larger Macs and smelt, but the bass still hit cut mackerel, swim baits, irons, wax wing, pretty much everything we threw. . Got bored and threw a strip of Mac on a bassin worm hook a la bass assassin style, chucked it into the kelp and they were all over it, and no snags either. Also caught some smaller barracuda but mostly calicos with a few sand bass mixed in. Great day overall, only saw one other boat and the Clemente, they ended up headin out west, I’m guessing for rockfish. Stopped attune golf balls again to look around. Metered some more possible fish and bait so something might be going on there tonight. Also stopped off the artificials north of the harbor in about 60 ft on the way in and metered a lot of action there. Threw out a strip of mackerel and picked up a decent but not legal calico right away then headed in. Awesome day on the water and it seems like the action is all over so get out there this weekend!

South of Oceanside
Torrey Pine is still a location of Squid and Squid Light boats and seiners. The squid have been scatter somewhat by this activity but continue to rebuild up every night.
So far nothing seems to be on it. No Yellows or Seabass that we know of.
Plenty of Squid to make bait with though.
Try taking some of this to Leucadia Kelp to throw at the Calico Bass. This will likely get some of those big Bass living there into a biting mood.

Another good are to drag that Squid to. Some Yellowtail seen at the upper edge of the MPA and at the point of the kelp at Northwest Corner spot.
Calico Bass fishing is good all along the kelp from the Cove to point loma. Find a kelp bed spot away from everybody and catch and release tons of 13 inch bass along with a few legal fish up to about 5-6lbs.
Some guys are seeing Barracuda along the kelp line whiles don’t see any. Same story for Green Mackerel. Big hit or total miss.

TJ Flats
The Squid is still here and the 20 to 35lb Yellowtail and 20 to 55lb Seabass are on it.
One of our good contacts scored a pair of Seabass during the night and several big Yellowtail this morning.
Sea Conditions are no good. It’s on the sloppy / choppy side

Late development at 11am this morning. Some Mexican Pangas have moved onto the Squid beds and are spreading out nets between the boats
Check out the Jumbo Yellowtail Ali caught this morning!

Coronado Islands
Not a lot of attention on the Islands right now with the bite inshore at the TJ Flats
Same old story as the past several weeks. Scattered small schools of Yellowtail are roaming around the Middle Grounds, the Gap, the Gun Site, the Ribbon kelp, South Kelp and the 5 Minute Kelp.
A yellowtail or 2 is also being found on the Weather side of North island and South Island at times
The Barracuda bite is also some what spotty now too

OFFSHORE
Not very good conditions offshore today. Steep short period swell with 15mph wind.
This is keeping most guys from venturing out to have a look around. This being the case, new fresh dope is going to be very hard to come by today.

The 425 to the 371 zone has some scattered kelps with a good number of 15 to 20lb yellows. A few larger models have been found in recent days too.

The Hidden bank, just west of Ensenada has some great looking water with Bonito.
