2013 Yellowtail Shootout Presented by Costa
June 21st – 23rd
The 2013 Yellowtail Shootout is this weekend!
Don’t miss out on your chance for great fishing, competition, prizes, food and family fun. June 21st, 22nd and 23rd, it is going to be the best tournament yet.
The yellowtails are still biting and within the reach of everyone. New this year, awards for 1st through 5th place will be given to the heaviest aggregate of three fish. The biggest fish gets a grand prize and can also count towards the 3-fish aggregate.
The 2013 Yellowtail Shootout kicks off with the mandatory Captain’s Meeting on Friday, June 21st from 6 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at San Diego Boats, located next to the Dana Landing Market on Mission Bay. Mission Bay has a relaxed atmosphere and plenty of free parking. Fishing begins on Saturday, June 22nd and culminates with the “After Party” Awards Banquet on Sunday, June 23rd at 11 a.m.
We’ve also waived the late fee this year. You can still get in on all the action for $300 per team. The entry fee will cover three anglers as well as Tournament Entry, Official Tournament Shirt, Official Tournament Visor, Angler Goody Bag and Full Access to the Awards Party.
Every team gets a tourney bag, and the contents of each bag are valued at more than $100 of great giveaways from our sponsors. If you like door prizes and raffles, there will be plenty, with some amazing things to win. But if you really want to cash in, take advantage of the optional Winner Take All Jackpots of $100, $200, and $300 per team.
The “After Party” Awards Banquet will be held at San Diego Boats and Phil’s BBQ will be catering. The After Party will also have a raffle and Vendor Village showcasing all of the gear available from sponsors. The public is welcome to the Vendor Village.

Catalina Island
Re-posting from yesterday as all this info is still correct and unchanged…..
The frontside east continues to see Yellowtail, Barracuda and lot’s of Calico Bass. K-20, Frog Rock, Seal Rock and the under the light spots are all holding fish. Current or a lack of it is the main issue of why the counts are down.
White Seabass continue to show in VERY small numbers along the Back side. The Vee’s to China point is the zone to look at. Some larger grade Yellowtail are also getting hooked.
The numbers of Squid are increasing along this part of the Island too. The coming full moon should aid in getting more Seabass biting.
Up at the west end the action is slower but yellows are being seen and a few caught almost daily. Eagle Reef has some and a bunch of Barracuda. West Cove has some Yellow and lot’s of Calico Bass. Some of these are quite large.
EVERYTHING around the Island is keyed up on LIVE SQUID! Anchovy is working good as chum but Sardines are a waste of time.
Currently the Long Beach carnage and the Mary Claire are not at the Island.

San Clemente Island
The Islands Cove, Caves and China Point spots have been close for weeks now but it appears those spots will be open on Saturday from 4am to 4pm. Just in time for the Yellowtail shoot out.
It is highly likely these spots are holding a good grade of yellowtail and there was Squid in the cove at last word.
Yellowtail and Seabass have also been showing up the Back at Lost Point and at Eel Point. There is also a squid bed at Cherry reef close to the Runway.
There is also some great Calico Bass fishing at most any kelp bed right now. There are more legals than shorts biting at the moment.

Newport Beach
Sand Bass fishing in the evenings has turned stupid. Easy limits for most who get on a pile of Bass.
The fish are on the Newport reef, the Pipe is 70 to 90 feet AND they are moving out onto the Mud on Huntington Flats to start spawning.
Lots of quality bass too. They are a solid 2-3lb average with some big fat toads upwards of 8-9lb being caught too.
Live or Fresh dead is the hot bait but 6 inch Berkley, “new penny” colored grubs are doing some damage as well.
Sheephead are biting in the am hours along with a good sample of Sculpin.

Fantastic Calico Bass fishing this morning. Quite a few guys have caught thier 5 fish limits of legal sized bass. LOT’s more are shorts. 75% percent are shorts which means 1 in 4 is a legal fish. A number of guys called in saying they have caught and released 50+ plus bass today.
Anchovy chum is the ticket to turning these bass on and then Plastics are doing the trick.
No recent sign of Yellowtail or barracuda.

Large squid beds along this part of the coast, although the Squid boats are scattering this stuff up pretty good. No game fish on it yet. Just Squid.
Leucadia Kelp has a Bass bite going on. The squid is working great as bait for some nicer grade, legal sized fish. Your likely to see some just short barracuda as well.

TJ Flats
The Squid bed at 32.28.40 x 117.09.10 IS holding both Seabass and Yellowtail. A number of boats got on it and some of those guys did very good on 20 to 45lb Seabass and 25 to 30lb Yellowtail.
Last night the word was the Squid was easy enough to make what you need to fish with and the Seabass were right there on the spot and biting.
The San Diego 3/4 day boats are also coming here to make bait to use here an at the Coronados.

Coronado Islands
One would think that getting some Live squid for bait would have turned the Yellowtail bite wide open. It didn’t have much of an effect on the Island fish however. The bite is still just a pick.
The barracuda bite is off as well.

OFFSHORE
Nothing really new as of 12 noon today. Not many boats out today for what ever reason. Probably because of it being mid-week.
Some nice kelps on the Hidden bank, some great looking water just west of Ensenada with Bonito. Bluefin were also seen in this area on saturday.
475 Knuckle has a few kelps but but there are schools of open water yellows breezing and being found by color spots and jig stops.
115 to 130 miles
From 31.00 down to 30.00 and from the 117 line inside to 116.40 is where the majority of the Bluefin are being seen.
Wide open yellowtail kelp in the zone with most every boat coming here scoring limits of Yellows by 10am.
Lot’s of Bluefin are being seen, they just don’t want to bite very good. These are almost all 40 to 60lb fish with a few pushing 100lbs. Fish with 40lb test at least.
220 to 250 miles
Tonnage of Bluefin! Lots of 50lb class fish with several over the 100lb class. Some boats made scores of up to about 90 tuna in a single day. Yellowtail are thick on the Kelps and there is also a few Dorado. Not much signal from Yellowfin down in the area anymore. No idea where they went off to.
All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
If you go fishing please give us a call or shoot us an email.

GALE WARNING IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT
Want a White Seabass? Santa Rosa Island is the place to be right now. Try looking at Beecher Bay. The eagles nest is worth looking at as well.
Yellowtail are scattered about, mainly at Santa Cruz Island. Try looking for them on the yellow Banks and maybe the Blue Banks as well.
The coast is kind of on the quiet side but some fish pop once in a while

SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 3 PM PDT THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH LATE TONIGHT
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!
2pm Update: The Yellowtail are once again on the chew. The Pursuit called in with 35 on the boat.

The entire Backside is closed until Friday but the front from White Rock to the point is open.

Calico Bass fishing is good in tight to the kelp for the guys wanting those.

OFFSHORE
Capt. Mike Hatfield from JosieLynnSportfishing.com just returned from a 2 day. They found good conditions almost everywhere. The following is a collection of notes from the trip….
32.21 x 117.24 Big Kelp. Caught 12 Yellowtail in the 15 to 18lb class.
over at the Hidden bank around 31.59 x 117.28 to 32.01 x 117.23, they found Kelps with 15 to 20lb grade Yellowtail. No Tuna seen here.
31.23 and up to 31.25 x 116.56 to 117.01 Large area of clean water and lot’s of BIG Bonito Water temp 66.1
way down from this spot between 30.00 and 31.00 x 116.40 to 116.50 was the best Bluefin area
Captain Eric Saurewein http://www.sauerfishcharters.com/ aboard the Sauerfish reported in after starting at the 238 and working North.
He reported limits of yellowtail from 10-15lbs on a single paddy at 31.43 x 117.03. They left the paddy biting.
The fish didn’t care what kind of bait was thrown at them as anchovies, sardines, squid and surface iron worked.
The fish however would not hit a trolled jig.
At 31.53 x 117.06 Eric was called in to 2 huge island sized kelps 300 yards long by Mike on the Josie Lynn. All the yellowtail one would want.
There was bluefin deep down under the kelp but they would not take a bait. They did confirm the bluefin as there was spots of it jumping out of the water, the big 80lb models.
Water temp 66F-66.7F and super clean.
All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·
If you go fishing please give us a call or shoot us an email.

Channel Islands
GALE WARNING IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT
Still good White Seabass action both on the coast and out at the Islands. Some good snaps on the Yellowtail too at times
The Yellow Banks at Santa Cruz Island has been a good hotspot for the past couple of Days and the Janelle Wreck has been the Coastal spot to hit
34.01.480 x 119.29.310 Yellow Banks
34.00.300 x 119.32.250 Yellow Banks (2nd high spot)

Santa Monica Bay
Report from Jonathan on theAnother Day:
Fished Saturday MDR 6 am to 8am (I would have preferred to fish longer but the kiddos had Soccer)…just north of the Santa Monica pier.
Broke off and pulled the hooks on 2 of what I will call the right kind. 35-55 ft of water 66.3F.
Back out Sunday same area put the right kind on the boat at 5.45 am 66.3F 35-55 ft deep.
Back at the dock by 6.15 and headed up to Leo Carrillo for some waves and family beach day.
A lot of racked baits and short bites.
Catalina Island
Pretty good fishing out at the Island right now. Plenty of legal sized Calico Bass, Barracuda and some Yellowtail are showing on all the front side spots east of Long point through the east end of the Island.
White Seabass and some Yellowtail are also being seen and caught on the Back side from Church Rock to China Point.
Some Yellowtail has also been seen in recent days at the West end cove, although.
Everything at the island is keyed up on Live squid. Anchovy is working great as chum to draw interest, but it’s the Squid draws the bite.
33.19.700 x 118.28.130 China Point
33.19.100 x 118.23.490 Silver Canyon
33.19.050 x 118.26.710 Freddies Beach

33.22.23 x 118.20.72 Gallaghers – 12 fathoms
33.21.75 x 118.20.03 Frog Rock
33.19.32 x 118.22.28 Palisades
33.19.32 x 118.18.23 Slide
San Clemente Island
The Cove, China Point and the Caves are closed until further notice.
Lost Point and Eel Point on the backside are hold both Yellowtail and White Seabass. These fish are also on the squid only.
Squid can be made near Cherry Reef which is near the Runway in 100 to 120 feet.
Calico Bass fishing is good in tight to the kelp for the guys wanting those.
32.51.06 x 118.30.21 Lost Point
32.55.17 x 118.33.41 Eel Point
Always make sure the Island is open before making the run.

Newport Beach
Really good Sand bass fishing the past few evenings
This action is coming from north of the Harbor around the Newport Reef and on the mud above Newport Canyon.
South of Oceanside
Torrey Pines area had roughly 10 light boats working the area for Squid last night. A number of Private boats were on it too looking for Seabass. At last word nobody caught one. No Yellowtail either.
This may change over time however. The Seabass might find this stuff in the coming days and stick with it.
If anything happens we’ll get the info out to you.
La Jolla / Point Loma
Some guys are finding really good Calico Bass fishing in the kelp if you can score some Anchovy. The Bass want these and 5 inch or smaller swimbaits.
The Live Squid would likely get them good too and the Squish can be made just up the coast at Torrey Pines
TJ Kelp
There is a large Squid bed just across the Border. So far we have no reports of any Seabass on it.
Squid bed off TJ 32.28.400 x 117.09.100
Coronado Islands
Some of the boats got some Squid and brought it to the islands in hopes of waking up the Yellowtail bite. It didn’t have the effect they had hoped for.
If still very much hit or miss with more miss than hit.
The San Diego came down with full tanks of Squid and scored just 6 Yellowtail and a White Seabass
Ensenada
Lots of Yellowtail and Barracuda around but the bite is slow. The fish that are being caught are stuff full of finbait.
Fish are being seen between the Island and Punta Banda, At the Island and the other gap near San Miguel reef.
Most of the action right now is on trolled Rapalas and Xraps but a few are coming on slow trolled Sardines brought down from San Diego.
Yellowtail are on Kelps along with some Bluefin are being caught just a dozen or so miles out to the west. This is the better option right now
OFFSHORE
Bottom of the Finger Bank
Some spots of Bluefin seen here along with Kelp Paddy Yellowtail, just a tad west of the bottom of the bank
Good number of these Yellowtail are big 25 to 30lb class fish.
238
Schools of Bonito along with Kelp paddy yellowtail are in this area today.
31.59 and up to 32.01 x 117.00 Mutiple schools of Big Bonito
31.10 x 117.24 Large Kelp with a good grade of Yellow on it.
31.32 x 117.10 Purple Water Kelps holding
112 to 130 miles
This zone is by far the best fishing for both Kelp Paddy Yellowtail and for the Bluefin Tuna.
The yellows down this way are almost all over 10lbs with a 12 to 15lb avaerage. Fairly good number Yellows in the 20lb class too.
The Bluefin are ranging mainly in the 40 to 60lb class with a shot at a 100lb fish.
All of the bluefin are being caught inside the 117.00 line and between the 30 and 31 latitude.
This stuff is moving very little between yesterday and today.
1 big kelp with only a little bit of yellowtail and nothing else 31.21 x 116.52
Few kelps with small yellowtail near 1010 Trench/Double 220 31.39 x 117.48
2 big kelps with yellowtail and bluefin in the area 30.28 x 116.34 (The better fishing is in this zone)
Nice kelp 30.33 x 117.00
Way to the West a kelp zone with a few yellowtail seen by plane 30.33 x 117.05
Nice kelps full of yellowtail 30.33 x 116.58
Bluefin and limits YT 30.30 x 116.56
