White Sea Bass back to 3 fish limits

Channel Islands
Report from John on the Butt Chaser:
Fished County line from the kayak this morning from 5am – 1030 am , plenty of squid to jig up . No Current = no fish …Scratch that 1 fish (WSB) 25-30lbs for a lucky Pber @ 9am … 20 Yakers , and 8 PBERS fishing… Commercial boat anchored up , looks like they will be working tonight ….

San Clemente Island
The backside of the island has been productive at times from Eel Point to the Dunes. The Navy has kept everyone out of Pyramid Cove and it’s scheduled to be closed for a long time.
Squid can be made near Cherry Reef if you can’t slip in to Pyramid and make it.

Catalina Island
The most productive spot for white sea bass this weekend has been the backside of the island from the Vee’s to Salta Verde. Silver Canyon has squid and in 120′ while drifting has produced yellowtail and white sea bass.
The frontside of the island is seeing smaller yellowtail 6-20lbs from the Quarry below Avalon up to White Cove/Hen Rock.

Report from Matthew on the Kingfish:
Fished Catalina today. Found small spots of squid at Silver Canyon in 120 ft where we anchored up for the night, but much more volume in 80 ft of water. Didn’t try to make any so not sure about getting a float. Conditions were off this morning, wind vs. current…had some cuda but no exotics. Moved to Sentinel Rock to try for yellows and anchored on a ridge. Great bass fishing back there until our current died. Ran across breezing yellows in West Cove but they sunk out and disappeared before we could get in front of them. More cudas in that area. Ran to front side to look for yellows and after finding too much boat traffic at Hen Rock, found the right conditions at K-20. Had one nice 15 lb yellow and many cuda before the uphill current died. Faced wind vs. the current and decided to head for home. Water temps were 63-65 backside and 67-70 fr ont side. Matt

Dana Point

Dennis on the Earley Light reported in:
Left the dock at 4pm yesterday. Got a half scoop of anchovies from Dana Point bait dock and headed to the San Mateo Kelp with my 6 year old daughter and a friend.
Wide open on the calico bass, some cuda’s and a couple short white sea bass.
Good current and water was 67 and green. Fished until dark and it never stopped.

Jeff on the Chubasco reported in: Fished the kelp just south of the domes, water was blue and 66°.
Anchored off some kelp strands and started with 2 short white sea bass and 2 short halibut, was slow for a while then let some line out to get closer to the kelp and it was almost wide open on the calico and sand bass with barracuda as well for an hour or two. Most everything was short with the occasional legal sandy and odd calico. Another short white sea bass was caught in the mix for a total of 3.
Within the 2 hours from 12-2 caught and released approximately 60 fish, tide upswing may have been a factor.
Also caught and released a 6 ft leopard shark.
All fish caught on the anchovy from Dana Point, with the exception of the shark on a sardine.
Great day on the water.

Offshore
Jason aboard the Fintoxication reported in from going far and finding the motherload of Bluefin a lot closer to home!
Short version as it is 12:30am and I’m dead.
Fished that area (112 to 120 Miles) for not much but some yellowtail. Never saw a tuna, got as far down as 30.40 but water never got above 62F, could not find the break. Only found 3 paddys in that whole area (1 loaded with fish from 10 to 28 lbs) basically got limits for 6 guys there.
Now for the reason i am writing. on th way back up the line we found BFT mania. about 2 sq miles of nothing but foamers after foamers, very hard to get them to go without bait but they were very easy to find as they were popping up constantly for about 2 hours. They were feeding on an endless supply of 4″ mini macs which were everywhere.
In the end we only got 1 ( 30 lbs and that seeed to be a small one.) on a small mega bait (would not touch the bigger iron.)
The center of the square was at 31.31x 116.57, about 15 or 20 Miles out of Ensenada. Left em foaming as we were still 60 miles down at 4pm. would have literally KILLED it with some small baits.
I need another bait tank…………..going to sleep hope this helps someone save the long run.

The Pacific Queen is in the area this morning and has bluefin on board.

Upper Hidden Bank
Report from Dustin on the Reel Creative:
Fished Saturday targeting yellows. Ran from Mission Bay past the 425 and onto the upper hidden. Found a large paddy 1 mile before the upper hidden but just sharks. Water never warmed up until about 10 miles from the upper hidden. Ran to the 475 but didn’t see a paddy. Ran straight up north 10 miles but water started to cool and turn green. Talked to Doug on Can’t Parker and got some intel to head north west of upper hidden. Found two large paddies around 32.5 x 117.19 first paddy was huge but empty, second paddy had a school of 20 or so under it. Landed 4 solid 10 lbers with one pushing 15 lbs. Lost 4-5 trying to have some fun on 12 lb test. Caught a 4′ thresher on the paddy and released it, this shut down the bite for an hour and then they came back and we landed one more and called it a day at 4:00 PM. Ran 23 knts all the way home. Beautiful weather.

Report Updated: September 20, 2013 at 10:50 pm

Ventura/Channel Islands
Besides the same report from yesterday with good white sea bass and halibut fishing there was some white sea bass closer to home.
The La Janelle wreck has a squid bed on it and it kicked out white sea bass last night and this morning before the seiner got a whack at it. Find the bait and you’ll find the fish.
The seiners are done for the weekend. Get some while you can!
Tonnage of white sea bass still around on the main land and littered around Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Island.
La Janelle 34.08.09 x 119.17.74

San Clemente Island
There is plenty of squid in Pryamid Cove. The only problem is the Navy has the cove closed 24/7 for the rest of the year???
The Navy kicked all boats out around 5:30am this morning. Half of the boats went to the backside of the island to the only open part near Eel Point and the other half returned to Catalina.

Catalina Island
The frontside of the island from Frog Rock to Hen Rock produced more 9 to 20lb yellowtail today for the 3/4 day sport boats. Water temp 65F and the current picked up in the afternoon. The current helped the bite.
Lots of calico bass and barracuda in the area as well. Nice day at Catalina.
No word from the backside today.

With squirt bags in tote from Newport bait (Zack you are awesome) headed to The kelp line by China Point Catalina. Anchored up at gray light and within twenty minutes had the right kind of Twenty lb ghost. Within gaff range he shakes his head and spits the hook. One for the fish gods.
Reconed up to little harbor for no signs of anything fishy.
Headed back down to the silver canyon area around 11am and started drifting in 60′. First drift didn’t produce, so I decided to start on the fish highway at 120′. Four drifts later we had one ghost (27lbs) and four flattys! Three legals topping out at 8lbs… No signs of yellows today!
Caught plenty of calicos as well with all being released!
Water was 61.5 blue, wind was variable between 6-10knts until noon and the current was moving pretty good up hill today!
Overall great day on the water. Saw only four boats today!
Tight lines Sea Konig…

Dana Point
Lots of dirty water to the South of the harbor. All the way past Oceanside. See picture below.
Slow calico and sand bass fishing reported.
greensumfun

Oceanside
Lots of mackerel near the Academy Kelp.
Slow fishing reported with no current this morning around the Tamarack reefs.
Team Hammered yapping on the vhf not making sense again.
San Onofre is still dirty.
sanonofre

A few kelps in the area of 33.05 x 117.26 5 miles off the Carlsbad Power Plant. A couple boats got some yellowtail off them before the plane flew over. Not full speed but some life.
Eddie found the kelp and called everyone in…
eddieyt

La Jolla
Squid is starting to invade the area. Spots of squid in 300+ feet of water in the canyon were reported this morning. Lack of current and off color water this morning made for slow calico fishing. The afternoons have been cleaning up and the current starts ripping. The North West Corner of the kelp line has been holding the most life.

Point Loma
Orca reported feeding on dolphin yesterday afternoon.
orcapointloma615

Tijuana Kelp
The squid beds got a look last night and this morning. 32.28.400 x 117.09.100
No fish on the squid yet but plenty for making bait.

Coronado Islands
Captain Ali Hussainy aboard the SeaHunt fished the Ribbon Kelp in the afternoon hours. The current was ripping up hill. He slow trolled sardines around trying to get a buddy a yellowtail. After two professional long range releases on yellowtail he packed it up and headed home. 2 farmed yellowtail and a couple jumbo barracuda. The water temp was 64F and not very clean.

Offshore
The 14 mile bank, 289, etc are holding dry kelps. See Oceanside Report for some kelps holding yellowtail.

9 Mile Bank
JD on the Breakaway did a shake down trip and tried fishing cod on the lower 9 mile bank. He reported that the cod were not biting. He talked to some guys that fished the Coronado Islands for nothing.

101 Bank
Randy on the Clouserhead reported in this evening:
Went solo south through the 101 on a course due south following that warm water finger along the canyon. Plenty of life more birds than I have seen for a long time. About 8 miles south of the 101 came across that paddy that you dream about. Just sticking out there with nothing around. As I get closer I can see there are boils along the current edge. I fly fish so I know there is a good chance I can get bit. First cast immediate hit, head shakes right into the paddy. Did this two more times same scenario. The fish are just too big I can’t turn them. I put on straight 30lb fluorocarbon and this time make the cast get hit head shake and I out the boat in gear and gun it away from the paddy and turn the fish’s head and i’m good to land it. Twenty plus nice yellow. Try some more casts but they are wise. Throw bait and catch two more tight up against the kelp. One being a toad weighing just under 35 lbs after it bled and weighed at home.
I called the numbers but I guess many out there thought they were radio fish. Reel Addiction came in later and they stuck a couple while I watched.
One was so fat it looked like a jack crevalle when it came over the side.
Good day I think this might be the season we have been waiting for.
Thanks Fish Dope for the SST’s and suggestion to take the inside route. You guy’s rock. Randy

Captain Ali Hussainy aboard the SeaHunt found a kelp in the same area as these guys today. Also had jumbo yellowtail on board. His buddy farmed a few of them while Ali landed his. Low 30lb grade yellowtail on sardines.

Upper Finger
Doug on the Can’t Parker reported in:
Tried 425, water cool 63.5, kinda green no kelps.
Went to 427 knuckle based on FD. Water warmer found a couple of patties, only sharks, water 65.3 though. Went to the upper finger right on the numbers and found great blue water and 66.5 degree water.. and some nice patties. They were holding.
Ended up 2 for 4 on two nice JUMBO Yellowtail 30 to 35 pounds.
No wind all day, best water by far and some yt’s!!! Can’t Parker

The Triangle
Robert aboard the Kavorka took the triangle route today staring at the 425. The water at the 425 was 65.7F. He headed South West 2 miles and found a kelp for 2 yellowtail to 25lbs. Pointed it for the 371 for nothing then back up to the 226/302. Saw 1 kelp with a boat on it and didn’t check. Water temp at the 226 was 68F. He didn’t find anything else doing.
Lots of clean water just no life.
Thanks for the call Robert.

Below Ensenada
Word from way down the line is very few kelps holding yellowtail and only a few bluefin seen this morning. Plane is up and trying to help the sport boats out for not so far. Boats are spread all over the ocean at 100-130 miles from San Diego. Ocean is flat calm and greasy. The boat we talked to was blanked so far for his day by mid day but said others have found a lucky kelp with small yellowtail on them. The furthest zone at 130+ miles is holding the most bluefin. All bluefin are being caught inside the 117.00 line and between the 30 and 31 latitude.

1 big kelp with only a little bit of yellowtail and nothing else 31.21 x 116.52
Few kelps with small yellowtail near 1010 Trench/Double 220 31.39 x 117.48
2 big kelps with yellowtail and bluefin in the area 30.28 x 116.34 (The better fishing is in this zone)
Nice kelp 30.33 x 117.00
Way to the West a kelp zone with a few yellowtail seen by plane 30.33 x 117.05
Nice kelps full of yellowtail 30.33 x 116.58
Condor kelp with bluefin and limits YT 30.30 x 116.56

Channel Islands
Still good action on White Seabass. Santa Rosa Island in Beechers Bay continues to be a primary target location, although a few fish at Santa Cruz Island and the east end of Anacapa are still possible. There are Squid beds in the Bay and the seabass are roaming around over them.
The coastal bite is weak but some seabass are being caught daily. The Ormond Power plant, County Line and Deep Hole have all had quick shots of seabass in recent days. On all these spots the bite is quick and over in minutes. Have to be in the right place at the right time.
Lots of good rockfish action available in case the Seabass don’t want to play.

Santa Monica Bay
Not much to talk about on this part of the coast except for the good and steady Bonito bite in King Harbor.
Plenty of them are roaming around the Harbor and when the receivers have live Anchovy the bite is very good.
Guys in skiffs are catching them using 6 to 8lb test and fly lining an Anchovy on a #2 or #4 hook.
You don’t have to have a skiff though. Guys walking out on the long breakwall are also scoring using a splasher rig or a 3/4oz Kastmaster. Small mega baits are also working great.

Catalina Island
From Matt in the FD Forums this evening:
Okay, so the wind sucked today. We went to the front side of Cat and hit the spots working our way back. Great squid from the guys at Newport Bait Barge! Didn’t want to stick around long over there because I was worried about being able to get back. We ended up with some nice Bass and my personal best leopard!
Matt

Yellowtail is the primary target right now.
Good bites have happened on the back side at the Vee’s, Silver Canyon, and between Ben Weston and Sentinel Rock.
On the front side the K-20, Hen Rock, Empire landing spots have all had or have yellows on them right now. This bite is entirely on Live Squid! The Yellows are completely ignoring Sardines.
You can also find some decent barracuda fishing along the front on all the spots the Yellowtail are on plus Eagle Reef and there is a dab of them at Lion Head.
White Seabass continue to be found along the back. Look for the right condition from Church rock to China Point.
95% of the bite is in the grey light of morning right now, and everything is on Squid. Live or Dead, Both are working fine.
The Pacific Carnage is at the Island selling Squid. You can find them in Lovers cove next to Avalon.
Darrell Wilson is also at Avalon with a limited amount of squid.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
Status quo. No change
Reposting from yesterday……..

Sand Bass:
Spawning sand Bass are the story now. In addition to that the daytime fishing for the bass has improved a great deal.
The Bass are building up into size able schools now and are beginning to move out over the Mud to spawn. Right now and for a day or 2 more they will be close to structure spots but as time wears on they will move farther and farther out over the structure less mud bottom.
Several area show promise right now. Just outside of Queens gate about 2-3 miles SSW of the gate in 75 feet, Around Izors Reef are 2 good areas in the Long Beach area.
Closer to Newport they are showing at The Newport Reef and the Airplane (sorry no numbers for this spot yet). The plane is on a mud / Hard bottom on the north edge of the Newport Canyon in 75 feet.
Watch for more Bass to begin showing on the Huntington Flats and on the 108 area in the next couple of weeks.
very nice quality to most of these bass this year. Very few short fish, with the average running 3 to 5lbs.

Barracuda:
The Cudas are still around but tough to find and tougher to catch. They are in small schools and for the most part are staying deep. Most are being found on meter marks and then only a few are being caught. If you find them, they have lately been wanting live bait over the iron, but the iron is working.
The fish are very scattered right now. No one spot is better than another except for maybe the buoy #1 spot.

Yellowtail:
Almost none left around. Buoy #1 rockpile is the only spot we are hearing has any Yellows and they are not being seen daily anymore.

Dana Point to  South of Oceanside
Water condition remain poor at best with dirty green spread out the entire stretch from Aliso Pier to Del Mar.
Salt creek is very slow. Dana Point things improve a little with some short calico bass and Short Barracuda. San Mateo kelp has a decent bite on short calico Bass but Legals are hard to come by. Same story for Barm Kelp.
Scoring a tank ful of Anchovy will greatly improve your chances of getting a Bass bite going.
No local Yellowtail seen or caught in over 10 days now.

Report from Mike Webster:
REALLY FUN fishing off San Mateo Point today (6/13/2013)!  Between 4 of us we probably caught at least 40 fish (barracuda & bass) but only 1 keeper bass.

Report from Mark Rubins:
4 of fished on my boat the Champ from 4-7:30 PM last night. Bait at Oceanside was anchovy and sardines, good quality bait.   We got a scoop of those Chovies.  Fished the plastics and the chovy.
Caught a Barracuda and 20 Calicos,  all in the 12-14 inch range.  Tide movement was slow, water color dirty green.  Temp was 67 degrees.  Lots of military boats moving around out there.

La Jolla / Point Loma
By mid morning and afternoon the water cleaned up and the bass were on the chew. Really good bass fishing around the North West corner. A few yellowtail were hooked as well.
Chum anchovies while flylining a #2 hook and anchovy collar hooked or nose hooked back in to the kelp.
Find current and set up in the kelp accordingly.

My buddy Lyall from the Coastal Angler Tagging Cooperative http://www.cooperativefishtagging.org/ was out on the Outer Limits tagging bass yesterday and today in La Jolla with 18 volunteer anglers each day. Fishing was so good they ran out of tags! They tagged over 900 calicos for the two days, with 526 caught today by 3:30 at the Northwest corner! They also hooked several quality yellows this afternoon at NW but lost them due to fishing with bass gear. Most of the bass were caught on swimbaits – all sizes, all colors. They also scored some nice fish on surface iron this afternoon when the current laid the kelp down. The captain and crew worked their butts off and really went above and beyond, and having fished with them personally I can’t recommend them highly enough for offshore trips this summer.

If you catch a tagged bass, please write down the tag number and report it! You can call it in to the phone number on the tag or use their website, and you’ll be entered into a monthly raffle for a $200 prize. The data is going towards a great, scientifically-sound study that will ultimately help us – here’s a cool article on BD about it: http://www.bdoutdoors.com/article/so-cal-scene-california-saltwater-bass-tagging-program/

Bull Ring

The TJ kelp just below the border about 2-3 miles, has a large Squid bed on it. Chances are very good that some Tanker Seabass are on it as well.
This is new fresh dope. Jump on it quick if your serious about a shot at a local Seabass.
Heads up! Be sure you have all your Mexican permits and you have photo ID on you and everybody else on board. The Navy has been patrolling around and they might sneak up on you in the dark of night

Coronado Islands
Steady but slow fishing for yellowtail. Every once in a while some boat stumbles on a group of Yellows that want to chew the paint off the boat but right now that isn’t the norm.
catch 1 or 2 is a good day. Catching some Barracuda is far more likely right now.
Try slow Trolling a Sardine or Mini Mackerel. Put 1 line out on the surface and a 2nd one with 4 to 6oz of lead and troll at about 1.5 to 2mph. Set your drags fairly light with the clicker on. This will pull the hook to the corner of the fishes mouth.

Phillip on the Peerless slowed trolled anchovies around the islands today and ended up with 3 nice yellowtail.

Rough choppy short wave conditions today on the local offshore areas put a damper on the action. Some private boats have turned around gone home or slipped in the coast right along the beach.
The Forecast for tomorrow is better but it turns windy again beginning on Sunday

Hidden Bank
Report from Aaron Vernallis on the Hemi’s Whiskey:
Picked up some sardines on the way out of point loma and headed south with a full tank of gas so options were available. My gulf of Mexico buddy was along for the ride, and this would be his first trip off California. Ride south was not bad and we made it to 425 pretty quick. We saw an sportfisher sitting on the east side of the bank and decided to head west and look for kelp. None was found and the conditions were good so we decided to run for hidden banks. Found a good kelp bank with yellows flashing around it as well as a huge mola mola. First sardine resulted in a nice 13lber, but the rest looked to be small guys. Dropped in for a spear check, didn’t see any of size, but took a Jack mackerel about 40 ft down. conditions were still nice so we ran the line of banks from 390, 421, 371 then back to the Coronados. Found kelp along the way and chummed them up for no fish. Coronados was dead with only the Mexican navy around. Cracked a few beers in the cove and returned for home in time to watch a SEAL team do a low drop out of a c130 with 2 zodiacs off point loma. Fun day with many dinosaurs burned.

475 Knuckle
Schools of open water Yellowtail are trapped around the high spot in a warm pocket of clean water. Very few if any kelps are in the area though.
The Yellows are are being found by seeing color spots and on the troll jigs. These fish are the same size as the fish below at 112 miles
31.59.00 x 117.09.00  475 Knuckle

112 to 120 miles
The kelp paddy and bluefin area has backed down south a bit with a cold dirty band of water now running straight out from Colonett.
Below that, Outstanding kelp paddy yellowtail action is happening with limits of 10 to 12lb average fish. All these kelps are loaded.
Bluefin Tuna are also here in the same area. Some have been found on kelps with the Yellows and some by seeing Jumpers or by sonar marks or even Jig stops.
The size is impressive! a 35 to 40lb fish is a small one, the average tuna is around 50 and quite a few 60 to 80lb models are being seen with a few caught.
Some really big units of 100 to 150lbs are being seen daily and a couple of them are getting hooked. Most of these are escaping though as the guys who hook them are under gunned.
Fish the 40 to 60lb test!! The Tuna are biting it just fine. If you hook one of these on 25 or 30lb your just wasting your time. You’ll get chewed off before you can get it boat side.
Take a look around these numbers 30.55 to 30.29 x 116.55 to 116.49. Work south by east from there
