2013 Yellowtail Shootout
Presented by Costa
June 21st – 23rd

ONLY 1 WEEK AWAY!!

Hard to believe June is here and that means the countdown has started to the 7th annual Bloodydecks Yellowtail Shootout on June 21st, 22nd and 23rd.

The stage is set for the biggest, best Yellowtail Shootout yet. “The Yellowtail bite is already the best it’s been in years, so we are looking forward to a great tournament with lots of nice fish” says Ali Hussainy of BD Outdoors. We will have great prizes, food and fun for all.

Jason Hayashi of Fish Dope and BD said ” The yellowtail bite is awesome from Ensenada to Ventura. Many areas within the tournament boundaries have been hot as long as there is current and bait. Fish have been caught as close as three miles so smaller boats have as much chance to win as anyone. Fish are eating surface irons, mackerel and sardines. The fish have ranged from 6 to 30lbs. I believe it will take a 35lb plus yellowtail to win the biggest fish category”.

We will introduce a slightly new format to the tournament to enhance the effect of skill over luck. The rule change dictates that first through fifth places are to be determined by a bag limit of 3 fish. The biggest fish gets a grand prize and can also count towards the 3-fish aggregate.

The 2013 Yellowtail Shootout kicks off with the mandatory Captain’s Meeting on Friday, June 21st from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at San Diego Boats, located next to the Dana Landing Market on Mission Bay. Mission Bay has a relaxed atmosphere and plenty of free parking. Fishing begins on Saturday, June 22nd and culminates with the “After Party” Awards Banquet on Sunday, June 23rd at 11 a.m.

A $300 entry fee will cover three anglers as well as Tournament Entry, Official Tournament Shirt, Official Tournament Visor, Angler Goody Bag and Full Access to the Awards Party. Additional anglers may be added to the team for $100 USD each when paid in full by June 14, 2013. After June 14, 2013, the team registration fee will be $375 and $125 per additional angler and includes anglers registered at the captains meeting.

Every team member gets a tourney bag, and the contents of each bag are valued at more than $100 of great giveaways from our sponsors. If you like door prizes and raffles, there will be plenty, with some amazing things to win. But if you really want to cash in, take advantage of the optional Winner Take All Jackpots of $100, $300, and $500 per team.
The “After Party” Awards Banquet will be held at San Diego Boats. The “people have spoken”, and we are listening so Phil’s BBQ will be catering the awards meal. The After Party will also have a raffle and Vendor Village showcasing all of the gear available from sponsors.

Members of the public are welcome at the Vendor Village. The tournament is open to all anglers fishing from private boats

Channel Islands
Best shot at White Seabass is at Santa Rosa Island in Beechers Bay. Bite time is gray light to 7am. There is also Squid in the same area.
The coastal bite on Seabass showing a little sign of coming back to life, but is still a slow pick to nothing at all. Need lady luck riding with you on this.
Some very nice Halibut are also being caught by accident for the guys fishing for Seabass.
The Yellowtail bite at santa Cruz and Anacapa has all but dried up now. They are probably still around but waiting for the water temps to come back up to where they were last week.
Of course if all else fails you have outstanding Rockfish and Lingcod action to fall back on.

Santa Monica Bay
For some reason the entire bay has not shown any real spark of life yet this season. The primary biter is still wintertime Rockfish and Sculpin. The only exception is the good Bonito bite inside of King Harbor, Redondo Beach.
Plenty of them are roaming around the Harbor and when the receivers have live Anchovy the bite is very good.
Guys in skiffs are catching them using 6 to 8lb test and fly lining an Anchovy on a #2 or #4 hook.
You don’t have to have a skiff though. Guys walking out on the long breakwall are also scoring using a splasher rig or a 3/4oz Kastmaster. Small mega baits are also working great.

Catalina Island
Yellowtail is what most guys are chasing at the Island. Good bites have happened on the back side at the Vee’s, Silver Canyon, and between Ben Weston and Sentinel Rock.
On the front side the K-20, Hen Rock, Empire landing spots have all had or have yellows on them right now. This bite is entirely on Live Squid! The Yellows are completely ignoring Sardines.
You can also find some decent barracuda fishing along the front on all the spots the Yellowtail are on plus Eagle Reef and there is a dab of them at Lion Head.
White Seabass continue to be found along the back. Look for the right condition from Church rock to China Point.
95% of the bite is in the grey light of morning right now, and everything is on Squid. Live or Dead, Both are working fine.
The Pacific Carnage is at the Island selling Squid. You can find them in Lovers cove next to Avalon.
Darrell Wilson is also at Avalon with a limited amount of squid.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

San Clemente Island
yesterday the entire Island was closed. Today only the Backside spots like Lost Point and Eel point are open.
The Cove, Caves and China point are all closed.
Some Yellowtail and a few White Seabass are being found at these 2 spots and Squid can be made at the Runway area in roughly 90 feet. Light for the sieners and light boats. this is the area they are currently working.
32.51.06 x 118.30.21  Lost Point
32.55.17 x 118.33.41  Eel Point
Always make sure the Island is open before making the run.

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
Sand Bass:
Spawning sand Bass are the story now. In addition to that the daytime fishing for the bass has improved a great deal.
The Bass are building up into size able schools now and are beginning to move out over the Mud to spawn. Right now and for a day or 2 more they will be close to structure spots but as time wears on they will move farther and farther out over the structure less mud bottom.
Several area show promise right now. Just outside of Queens gate about 2-3 miles SSW of the gate in 75 feet, Around Izors Reefare 2 good areas in the Long Beach area.
Closer to Newport they are showing at The Newport Reef and the Airplane (sorry no numbers for this spot yet). The plane is on a mud / Hard bottom on the north edge of the Newport Canyon in 75 feet.
Watch for more Bass to begin showing on the Huntington Flats and on the 108 area in the next couple of weeks.
very nice quality to most of these bass this year. Very few short fish, with the average running 3 to 5lbs.
Barracuda:
The Cudas are still around but tough to find and tougher to catch. They are in small schools and for the most part are staying deep. Most are being found on meter marks and then only a few are being caught. If you find them, they have lately been wanting live bait over the iron, but the iron is working.
The fish are very scattered right now. No one spot is better than another except for maybe the buoy #1 spot.
Yellowtail:
Almost none left around. Buoy #1 rockpile is the only spot we are hearing has any Yellows and they are not being seen daily anymore.

Water conditions are just not right. The water is still an off color green and the fish are just not as interested.

Report from Mark Austin on the Heritage:
Fished Box canyon this morning. Got one decent one out of endless dabs and tiny ones. Came home with three. Water was super green and dirty at 64-65 degrees.
rockfish 6-13

La Jolla / Point Loma
Dirty green water. Some Calico bass biting but most are finding it a tough go.
Not many Barracuda seen lately either. Right now the main catch is small to medium size Rockfish and the deeper you fish the better. Try the 32 or the 270 at about 250 feet.

Coronado Islands
Still kind of bleak here. Some yellows are around and if your lucky you’ll stumble on a spot that wants to bite, However most are not seeing any of this. What bite there is, is almost entirely made up of Barracuda.
Middle ground, the gap between the Island and the lee of South Island is where most are looking.

Report from Sean on the Aimee’s Outrage:
Left shelter island at 6 am and picked up some horse deans. Headed for the 425.
Little wind with small long period swell was sweet. Able to run at 22 Knts in my skiff.
Buzzed through the middle grounds, lee of South Island and SKR. Didn’t see anything interesting.
Headed towards the 425 working with “zen time”.
Didn’t see any kelps or the nice 2 degree break I was looking for. Water was 65 degrees.
3 miles SW of the high spot got a call from zen time about the kelp they found loaded with small yellows.
Ran up and caught 7 on bait with 20 lb fluoro. Slow pick. Released 3 firecracker and kept 4 around 10 lbs.
Kelp was at 32 17.672 north by 117 24.584 west.
Bite shut off at midday but was pretty good early with limits for zen time.
Hit the islands on the way in for nada.

475 Knuckle
Warm pocket of clean water is holding nice sized schools of Yellowtail. These are open water fish found by seeing color spots and jig stops

112 to 120 miles
The area has back down south a bit with a cold dirty band of water running straight out from Colonett, Below that, Outstanding kelp paddy yellowtail action is happening with limits of 10 to 12lb average fish. All these kelps are loaded.
Bluefin Tuna are also here in the same area. Some have been found on kelps with the Yellows and some by seeing Jumpers or by sonar marks or even Jig stops.
The size is impressive! a 35 to 40lb fish is a small one, the average tuna is around 50 and quite a few 60 to 80lb models are being seen with a few caught.
Some really big units of 100 to 150lbs are being seen daily and a couple of them are getting hooked. Most of these are escaping though as the guys who hook them are under gunned.
Fish the 40 to 60lb test!! The Tuna are biting it just fine. If you hook one of these on 25 or 30lb your just wasting your time. You’ll get chewed off before you can get it boat side.
Take a look around these numbers 30.55 to 30.29 x 116.55 to 116.49. Work south by east from there

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·

2013 Yellowtail Shootout
Presented by Costa
June 21st – 23rd

The tournament is open to all anglers fishing from private boats.

Excellent fishing for the month of June!!
Some excellent White Seabass fishing at Santa Rosa Island. The Pacific Dawn, Mirage, and the Apollo all scored limits by 8am the morning.
Try looking around in Beecher’s Bay. It is reported that the Squid and The Seabass are both here.
The coastal fish have, for the most part disappeared now but a few strays keep being caught daily.
We even got word that a few Yellowtail are being found on kelps between the Islands and the Mainland. Never seen that before

Redondo Beach
No change…….King Harbor Bonito continues to be the star attraction.
Some small Yellowtail are also in the Harbor. They are hanging out mainly at the Bubble hole spot but you could run into the most anywhere including out by the Bait Receiver.

Very little action outside of the harbor. A few Sand Bass and Halibut up north off Santa Monica, and a few down around Hermosa beach. Other than that it still all about Rockfish and Sculpin on the Short banks.

Catalina Island
Some good schools of Yellowtail are at the Island right now. They can be found on BOTH the front and back sides.
The Hot bite came from the backside near Ben Weston and Sentinel Rock spots. A few large Yellows with a few Seabass are showing at Salta Verde and Silver canyon.
Squid are also being found on these spot along with China Point out in 75 to 90 feet.

On the frontside you can find them roaming around at K-20, Hen Rock, Empire Landing, and at times at Eagle reef.
Some Barracuda are mixed in with these Yellowtail on the Front.
Some White Seabass action is still being found few a few guys between Church Rock and China Point. Look for the right conditions more that looking for the actual spot.
90% of the Seabass are biting in the grey light of early morning or the evening, with only a few caught during the night and even less during the daytime.
Calico Bass are being very active now. Just like the Yellowtail and the Seabass they also want the live squid.

The Pacific Carnage is at Avalon with Squid for sale.
Darrell Wilson on the Mary Claire is also at Avalon with a limited amount of Squid left for sale this morning
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

San Clemente Island
The Navy still has the Cove and the caves to China Point areas closed. The website says they will remain close until at least July 1st.
The middle of the Back side is open however and the Yellowtail White Seabass and a few big halibut are biting. Take a look at the Lost point and Eel point spots.
Squid is being found at the Runway area, which is also on the back side up towards the west end. Light boats have been on this stuff for about a week and half now.

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
Best fishing by far is for Sand Bass at night. The best bite time is after 9pm and lasts until about 3am
During the day the bite is a scratch at best, although it is showing good sign of turning on. Live or Fesh dead is the bait of choice! Sardines are being ignored.
Try using a 2oz leadhead and pin a Live Squid or a whole Fresh Dead one on it. Plastics are scoring a few as well. these are working best if you add a strip of squid to the lure.
The location is spread from just outside of the Queens gate in 75 feet to Izors.
A few Barracuda are showing up daily but no big scores or big schools on them around right now. Most of these are coming off Meter marks.
They are also very widely scattered about. The Queens Gate Sand bass area, the 150, and random areas over the Horseshoe are all seeing cuda from time to time.
The Buoy #1 Spot still has a very small amount of 8lb Yellowtail and Barracuda roaming around it and once in a while the guys there hook a few.

Down to the south and just to the north of Newport beach the sculpin along with a handful of Sand and Calico bass are showing on the Newport reef and the Santa Ana River Pipe.
No word of any White Seabass from this location for a while now.

Dana Point to Oceanside
Green off colored water is covering the entire zone from Salt Creek to below Yellowtail Kelp. Water temp is around 64/65. That is down from the 68/69 it was last week.
Calico Bass fishing is not all that good at the momment. A new fresh load of Anchovy this morning should help out though.
The Yellowtail and Barracuda have left the kelp line spots. None seen now for a number of days.
The water does clean up and warms up around 10 miles off the beach and it out here where you might find a kelp with some Yellowtail on it. Defiantly not a sure thing though.

La Jolla / Point Loma
Same off color water along this section of the coast as is happening off Dana Point. There was a single White Seabass that we know of taken from the point of the kelp at Northwest Corner in recent days but no reports of any Yellowtail.
Bass fishing is best described as being “off”. They are biting a little bit, if you have some Anchovy chum. Pretty slow if you don’t.
Not many Barracuda seen lately either. Right now the main catch is small to medium size Rockfish and the deeper you fish the better. Try the 32 or the 270 at about 250 feet.

Coronado Islands
Serious hit and miss Yellowtail fishing. The Mission Belle scored 28 of them yesterday while everybody else scored 3 or less.
The Middle grounds and the lee side spot of South island continue to be prime areas to find a school of Yellowtail.
You are likely to run across plenty of Barracuda though.
A good tactic right now is to slow troll a live Sardine OR a Mini Mackerel. Drop a couple of them back about 50 to 75 yards. One on the surface and the other with about 4 to 6oz of lead (torpedo sinker).
Pay close attention to birds! the small tern birds will hover over Yellowtail. Sea Gulls will also so where the fish are but they will also flutter arond and over anything, so they are not a sure fire sign.
Also steer well clear of boats fishing on the Anchor and NEVER troll through another boats chum line!

OFFSHORE
There is a break forming now at 90 miles down the 117.00 line. This rougly in the area of the Lower 500.
Kelps below this point are LOADED with 10lb and a few larger Yellowtail. Spots of 40 to 60lb Bluefin are also in this same area and down to at least 115 miles.
The Yellowtail bite down in this zone is SCREAMING RED HOT this morning!! A number of boats called in with Limits of yellowtail by 10am. Bluefin are the target for them now and they are seeing them. 90% of these Bluefin are 40 to 60lb fish with a few in the 80 to 110lb class.
Above this point the kelps are now dry for the most part. Could still be some Yellowtail and Bonito on the Hidden Bank and over to the 390. This zone has not been looked at in days now.

All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·

Bait Report
San Pedro Bait has squid in the receivers.
Long Beach Bait has squid in the recievers.
Nachos has squid in the receivers.
Dana Point Harbor Bait Barge 5 -7″ Sardine
Mission Bay Bait Barge 5-8″ Sardine & 2-4″ Anchovy
San Diego Bait Barge 5-8″ Sardine & 2-4″ Anchovy

Channel Islands
The GOOD White Seabass fishing continues to roll right along. This morning a number of boats already called in with full limits
Becher Bay is the hot spot right now.
The coast has turned quiet but a few seabass are still being found at spots like the county line and Deep Hole.
There are reports now of Yellowtail on kelp paddy’s in the channel between the Islands and the Mainland. That is bizarre!!
34 00.20 x 120 00.00 Becher’s Bay Squid Grounds(big area)

Marina Del Rey
King harbor Bonito continues to be the star attraction.
Some small Yellowtail are also in the Harbor. They are hanging out mainly at the Bubble hole spot but you could run into the most anywhere including out by the Bait Receiver.

Catalina Island
The Yellowtail are snapping this morning for guys fishing the front side of the Island.
The bite is all on live Squid
Take a look at a couple of areas. K-20 to Hen Rock has Yellowtail and Barracuda, and the zone from Little Gibraltar and Red Bluff on up to the west has more Yellows. Last word was the hot bite at Start light had fizzled out but it could happen there again in the near future as these Yellows are on the move, roaming up and down the front side of the Island.
Yellowtail are also showing very good on the backside at Ben Weston. One boat is reporting about 30 fish on board at 11am.
White Seabass are still showing up. There was at least 1 40lb class fish caught this morning at the Vee’s.
Look at the entire area from Church Rock through the Vee’s and Salta Verde and on to China Point.
Darrell Wilson was able to make a small amount of Squid last night on the back side near China Point. There is also a pretty good sign of White Seabass being there with ideal condition seen on the spot this morning.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

The Navy still has the Cove and China closed. The middle of the back is open however and some Yellowtail and White Seabass are biting.
Squid can be caught in 90ft at the runway.
Middle of the front side is open too. Some Yellow seen in this area and there is decent calico Bass action as well.
A few Large Halibut are being caught in tight along gravel bottom beaches on Live Squid and on large plastic Swim baits.

LA Harbor to Newport Beach
Barracuda and Sand Bass are the main catch right now.
By far the best bite time is after dark in the evenings for the Sand bass.  9:30pm to 2am is the bite window right now. Most days they show very little. These Bass are running mostly in the 3 to 5lb class with very few short fish.
The queens gate Anchorage, Izors reef, and recently Newport reef as well as some spot now starting to build up over the mud on the Huntington Flats
Barracuda are around, although not in huge massive schools. Once in a while they pop up under birds but mostly this is meter mark fishing as the Cudas are hanging out near the bottom.
The cudas are being found at spots all around the Horseshoe, the 150 and the Queens gate Anchorage.
The Buoy #1 Spot still has Yellowtail and Barracuda roaming around it and once in a while the guys there hook a few.
Some very good fishing for Sculpin is still happening too. get on the right rock and its limits for all.

Dana Point to  South of Oceanside
Still a good area to go out to look for some Calico Bass action although the bite isn’t as torrid as it was a couple weeks ago.
Yellowtail and Barracuda are still living in the kelp from San Mateo to Barn kelp. Most guys are getting at least 1 quick shot at them just about daily.

La Jolla / Point Loma
This area still has not fully recovered from the wind storm last week. Short Calico Bass and barracuda are the primary catch. The bass are biting best on Live Anchovys.
Not much signal from Yellowtail or White Seabass in recent days.
If your looking for fish to take home to eat you might want to consider hitting the 270 or the 32 for some rockfish at 250 feet or so.

Coronado Islands
New schools of Barracuda have moved in along the lee of South island and South Kelp. Some White Seabass are being seen swimming with the Cuda too.
Yellowtail action is spotty at best. If you find the right bunch you might catch a bunch but most guys are not finding or seeing them presently.
Slow Trolling a Sardine might be the best option right now to find a hook a Yellowtail.

OFFSHORE
Steady limit style fishing for 10lb class Yellowtail. Good Signal of Bluefin too.
The Prowler is out today and working the area down the 117 line at roughly 90 miles for limits of Yellowtail and 2 Bluefin Tuna. 1 troll fish and 1 bait fish.
