Channel Islands
Bechers Bay and Christy’s have a little squid left and no fish with it. FD members checked the area out over the weekend and it has dried up. The hot spots remain on Santa Cruz at Smugglers Cove. The crowds were down this morning and the white sea bass bit again. By far the most consistent white sea bass bite anyone has ever seen at the Channel Islands.
LA Bait
San Pedro Bait has squid in the recievers.
Long Beach Bait has squid in the recievers.
Nachos has squid in the recievers.
Catalina Island
Mary Claire is out of squid, he will be making more tonight in the Palisades area.
Squid can be made between Sentinel Rock and Ben Weston area as well.
33.22.080 x 118.29.300 Sentinel Rock
33.21.420 x 118.29.410 Ben Weston
Yesterday from 9AM-1:30PM. Stayed between Hen Rock and K-20.
Got a yellowtail at Hen Rock on squid.
Limits of calico bass on squid and lots of cuda on the iron at K-20. We got the yellowtail with no one around.
Then fished the 267 on the way home from 3:30PM-10:30PM for 8 small makos and 2 blue sharks. All released but one. – Wes
The sport boats fished the K-20 area as well yesterday and had flurries of barracuda and a few yellowtail. The boats fishing fin bait did not catch yellowtail. Use the live squid!
There is barracuda from Frog Rock to Hen Rock this morning. Yellowtail are around with them.

Santa Barbara Island
The backside of the island has had white sea bass and yellowtail at times. Over the weekend there were some fish taken and a big bite could have happend but sea lions killed the bite.
Take a look in the kelp pockets on the backside of the island between Arch Reef and Sutil Island. Careful lots of rocks back there!
Marina Del Rey
Stephen aboard the Cash Money – After breaking in my new Blackfin the last couple of weeks with Jonathan he finally wasn’t available to fish with me this weekend.
Having already planning to be at the boat this weekend I decided to fish solo this morning.
I had intended to sign up for the Halibut Derby on Friday night but decided that if I did sign up I definitely would not catch a fish. That was the case the last couple of years.
Left the slip at 6:30 and stopped to see Mike at InSeine Bait to get some dines and I was off.
I decided to fish just to the north of Marina Del Rey and when I got to the zone there was only 1 other boat there. Started my drift and about an hour later one of my lines goes off and I jump on it only to have the line break. Probably a shark. Lots of sharks in the area. Jonathan and I fished there a couple of week ago and caught a bunch of them. Re-rig and back at it. One more raked bait and re-set. By now there are about 10 boats drifting a very small area. On the next drift I see one of my rigs getting bit and I put it in free-spool. Let it eat it for a about what seemed like forever and set the hook. Keep in mind that I have been chasing a nice Halibut for years. I have caught a few just legal but that’s it. When I set the hook I could tell it was a nice fish. I just kept the hoping for the right kind of head shakes and there they were. Just a real heavy fish with some big head shakes. When the fish came up it looked huge to me. It wasn’t hooked real great so I just grabbed the gaff and stuck it in the head and into the boat she went. Then all hell broke loose. That might have been the first time it knew something was up. Got it subdued and on my deck lay the biggest Halibut I have ever caught. I have a spring scale and it bottomed out at 25 so I knew it was close to 30. Very fat fish.
I headed in and stopped to have Mike weigh it for me and it came in at 29 pounds. It looks like the fish would have been a 3rd place fish in the derby and 1st place if I would have kept it alive. Since I love to eat Halibut, keeping this fish alive would not be the case.
Just an awesome half day of solo fishing. It makes all of the work and effort to get the new boat ready to fish worth it. Looking forward to next week.

My friend Chip Cone and I caught these Mako’s about 5 miles off of San Mateo Kelp Beds yesterday. We hooked 4 of them and landed 3. We chummed and had a nice chum line going, using live Mackerel we caught earlier in the day. We released all the Makos back into the water.
Earlier in the day we caught tons of Barracuda and a few calicos (no keepers though) and a bat ray at the San Mateo kelp bed.
Great day out on the water. – Scott Bain
Coronado Islands
Barracuda have invaded the islands and with it the white sea bass have also showed. The sea bass could be keyed in on squid which is around the North End of South Island and in the Middle Grounds.
Toss a big 2oz Crocodile and hope a sea bass grabs it before the barracuda do.
Offshore
Upper 500 / 295
Ran out towards the Hidden this morning, didn’t see squat so motored down toward the upper 500 and about midway between there and the 295, there is a line of multiple kelps.
Got an easy five yellowtail, all on sardines and straight mono. YT’s went 12-15-ish and they were hungry.
Then decided to troll for a bit for nada.
This was a shake down cruise for the boat since this was the first trip since last season and all went well except for my EPIRB getting activated – trying to figure this one out still. My sat phone was off all day since I usually don’t leave it on but after receiving quite a few concerned texts and voice mails from the folks who are contacts on the EPIRB, I think my sat phone will be on all day long in the future! I think I owe some special people lots of fish this year for putting them through some bad thoughts. The Mex Navy was in hot pursuit and once I crossed the border, the USCG called me on the radio and said I was transmitting and to turn it off. Wonder why the Mex Navy didn’t use the radio….very interesting afternoon!! – Rob
Take a look around 31.43-45 x 117.25-30
Lower 500 / 1140 Finger
First thing in the AM on Saturday Captain Mark Oronoz slid in to a kelp around 31.09 x 117.00. The crew hooked in to over 30 big bluefin and landed 10. 40-50lb test is recommended offshore in this zone.
Here is Juan Lopez from Oceanside , with deckhand Matt Lorenzo holding the biggest Bluefin caught. This was his first tuna ever and he caught it on a small Daiwa on 25lb test and no 2 speed!!
Matt Bowland of Bowland Plumbing in North County San Diego was on the Pacific Voyager and got the second biggest bluefin.
Spotter planes have looked between Guadalupe Island and San Quintin for albacore, tuna, etc and found nothing. No kelps holding below the 29.50 line. Hopefully the tuna are just down.
San Quintin
Our buddy Rick reported in after taking a trip to San Quintin over the weekend.
He did not find any yellowtail or tuna offshore. The calico bass fishing was really good at San Martin Island.

White Seabass are being seen and caught all over the place! Perhaps the best is Smugglers cove at Santa Cruz??
There are Seabass at Santa Rosa Island, Santa Cruz Island, Anacapa Island and along the coast from near the Ormond Power Plant, the county Line and Deep Hole.
These fish are moving around a litte bit from day to day, so what was slow today might be wide open tomorrow.
Squid has been the go to bait. It’s being made at Anacapa, Smugglers Cove, County Line, Power Plant, Christy’s and Bechers.
The squid boats are not selling squid at this time so it’s going to take a little work to get bait. CISCO’s only has anchovies but is sending out the bait boat for squid tonight with no ETA on return.
Take fresh dead with you!

Report from Michael on the Outdoor Play:
wish it was the 15th, went over Santa Cruise Island and the 3 of us had our White sea-bass in hour, The yellows where there as well, but the bite was not as hot as the white seabass. spent the rest of the day looking for halibut, and the end of our day the score ended up for the 3 of us, 3-white seabass, 7 sand bass, 4 rock fish and 1 halibut. it was a great day on the water
Marina Del Rey
The 38th annual Halibut Derby is June 8th and 9th (Yesterday and Today) http://www.halibutderby.com/
Over the past several weeks some very large Halibut have been caught at Twin Roads, Twin Towers, and the corner of the Bay just above the Santa Monica Pier. The general depth has been roughly 45 to 55 feet but don’t afraid to look in water as shallow as 15ft if the surf conditions will allow for it.
No live squid is available at either Redondo or at MDR. You will have to travel to LA Harbor to get live squid.
The Bonito bite in King harbor continues going strong as long as they have Anchovy for sale. A few Yellowtail were caught as well.
The Bonito are near the bait barge. Fishermen on the breakwall and in skiffs are catching them using live Anchovy’s, fly lining is the ticket for the skiff guys while splasher rigs and 3/4 to 1 oz Kastmasters are doing it for the guys on the breakwall.
The Yellowtail are at the Bubble hole and want a live Squid. Some have even been hooked by guys on the pier. Use at least 40lb and pull HARD or they will rock you or wrap you in the pier.

Bait Report
The San Pedro and Newport barges both received fresh loads of live squid yesterday morning.
There will be plenty around all weekend. There’s plenty of anchovies and sardines as well.
Both barges are open 24/7 for the season and can be reached at the following numbers…..or just come on by.
Newport 310-461-5370 or Ch 79 on the VHF
San Pedro 310-365-2516 or Ch 11 on the VHF
Catalina Island
Little Gibraltar and Red Bluff and areas in between are once again this morning a prime spot to look for a Yellowtail.
The word we have is those fish that were chewing at Starlight have moved a little bit down the Island to this red bluff area.
Live Squid is key! You have to have it to score one of these Yellowtail. You also have to have some current running. The bite is very slow with out it.
Salta Verde to Church Rock and the Sentinel Rock area continues to pump a few Seabass. This is very much hit and miss but if your in the right spot at the right time you can score big.
The Pacific Carnage and the Mary Claire are out of squid this morning. Darrell plans to try and make some tonight though if possible.
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!

The Cove and China are still closed. The middle of the back is open however and some Yellowtail and White Seabass are biting.
Squid can be caught in 90 at the runway.
Middle of the front side is open too. Some Yellow seen in this area and there is decent calico Bass action as well.
A few Large Halibut are being caught in tight along gravel bottom beaches on Live Squid.
Always make sure the Island is open before making the run.

Daytime action for what ever reason is kind of “off” right now. The water is really clean and full of bait, the fish just don’t want to bite all that good.
The Buoy #1 Spot still has Yellowtail and Barracuda roaming around it and once in a while the guys there hook a few.
The best fishing by far is for Sand Bass at night. 9:30pm to 2am is the bite window right now.

Report from me, Fishdope Danny on the Native Sun:
Had the chance to jump on the Native Sun Friday night for a little twilight action.
First about the boat and Crew, Capt was Gabriel Ceballos. A young guy who really know his stuff. On deck was Trevor, Ray and Nick. These guys were everywhere they were needed! No body was ever left waiting for help. The guys were right on top of things all night.
We already had Live Squid on the boat when we left the dock, so we headed straight out of the Harbor through Queens Gate.
The run was very short. only about 2-3 miles to where all the big freighter’s anchor up to wait to be unloaded.
We made several stops early but we had bad contions. wind agains’t a weak up hill current. Very tough to stay on the spot when it’s like this.
The Bass were not active at this time either. We didn’t even get our 1st Bass until about 9:30. It was at this time the current turned around and the wind stopped blowing. The Bass really didn’t go off though until about 11PM. At that time is was pretty darn good for most on 3 to 5lb Sand Bass.
We were due back in at midnight but Gabriel kept us out fishing until 1:30am because they were biting good.
REALLY COOL to see Capt. Gabriel go the extra mile for his passengers! We ended up with 143 Sand Bass for 51 passengers.
I recommend this trip and boat to everyone who would like a great evening out on the water!

Dana Point to South of Oceanside
Calico Bass fishing has turned down somewhat. It’s not wide open anymore but it still decent. Streaky of color water along with a drop in temp is the primary cause.
Barracuda and Yellowtail are still being seen daily with a legit short at Yellowtail coming from San Mateo down to Barn Kelp.

Still trying to rebound from the wind of a few days ago.
The water temps took a big hit and it turned green in most of the area.
A scant few Yellowtail seen or caught. Same for Barracuda, although there has been more of them than Yellowtail.
The Bass fishing also took a dump. If you really need to take some fish home and your in this area hit the 32 or the 270 for Rockfish.

No big story here but took my daughter and her friend fishing this afternoon in LJ. Water temp was 66 in the afternoon. Worked the kelp edge off the cove area and it was WO calicos on the anchovies. All released. Didn’t see anything on the outside and we tried a couple of drifts. No birds working. Water in PL was 63-64. Wind has laid down really nice this evening.
Coronado Islands
Very hit and miss action for Yellowtail. Some guys get them and other never even see a fish.
Best bitter is Barracuda right now.
The guys who did the best were the slow trollers working from the gap to down the lee side of South Island.

Captain Ali Hussainy fished the Coronado islands today. He reported in with 6 yellowtail landed out of 10 hooked from 8 to 28lbs while slow trolling and flylining sardines at the north end of South Island in 75′ of water. He reported flat calm seas and biting fish. There was no crowd at all.
Report from Chad on the Madrugador:
Fished the islands with the rest of the fleet. Ended up with 3 yellowtail. All of the fish came from the middle grounds. 1 was one the larger models. All were caught on slow trolled dines.
Report from Rick on the Rickdiculous:
Left for coronados Friday at 8pm from Oceanside.
Bait not great so got one scoop and set off for everingham San Diego Bay for more bait.
Pretty much more of the same, big horse deans and micro anchovies. Took a scoop and half of horse deans and a half of anchovies for chum.
Ran to the Ribbon at south Island and anchored up at 2:30am for 3 hours sleep before the start of 10lb line tourney for OAC. As soon as I was going to lay down squid showed up and worked them for one hour for 40 pieces before getting two hours of shut eye. Woke up at 5:30am to get ready for lines in at 6am. 6:02 am put on a 5 lb calico and from 6am to 8 am had maybe 5 barracuda to 6 lbs, and 5 calicos to 6lbs, and another 5 sandbass to 5 lbs. Ended up for the 10 lb line class OAC tourney, my wife with a 7 lb yellowtail, we lost 3 bigger ones due to 10 lb test. 8 calicos from 3.5 lb to 6 lb, 10 sand bass from 3.5 lb to 5.8 lb, and 10 barracuda to 6 lb. We took 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, and the ladies side. Nice day on the water. Oh ya, temp 66 to 66.4 good current all day.

Report from Kurtis on his 2520 Parker:
Great day on the water…used Fishdope for great SST charts and headed out S/SW
Just outside of the 425, we found 2 empty paddies then, the THIRD ONE WAS THE CHARM! put 13 Yellowtail on the boat in about 45 mins!
Doubles and triples consistently! 2.8mi south of the 425.
Water at 425 was 63+, warmed all the way up to 65.2
Hit the pile for some lings later… GO Get UM!!!!
Hidden Bank
Spotter plane saw Bluefin as far north as just below the Hidden Bank at roughly 60 miles at 31.48 x 117.20.
Today the Sea Adventure II is looking at this area and has also seen some jumper Bluefin. They also have about 1/2 limits of Yellowtail for a handful of kelps at 9am.
80 to 110 miles
Bluefin Tuna are spread all along the 117.00 line. Lot’s of jumpers seen in small schools. The size is impressive. Some are 35lbs but Most are 50lb class, with some well over 100lbs.
If you heading down come armed to do battle with BIG FISH! 40 to 60lb test is what you need for this grade of Tuna
ZILLIONS of Yellowtail on kelps. These are NOT all peanuts either. Plenty of 12 to 15lb fish and a few kelps are holding the 20 to 35lb models.
This morning the Prowler called in limits of Yellowtail by 8am.
The Chief scored 290 Yellows on a 2.5 trip.
The top Tuna catch came on the Pacific Voyager with 10.
The guys were way out gunned and not ready for this size of Tuna or the count would have been much higher.
No sign of any Albacore yet.
Report from Matt on the Tribute:
I caught this 50lb. Blue on the Tribute yesterday. One other was caught and limits of 8-12lb yellows.
The location was 31 miles off of San Jose exactly. That just above collenet.
Lots of spots of bluefin breezing around just mostly giving us the fin. We lost 4 others to guys who were under gearged. The other bluefin we caught was on a cedar plug trolling
That’s Matt out!!!
All reports, good, bad, or otherwise are very helpful.·

Channel Islands
Still kicking out white seabass in the night/morning/daytime hours! A few yellowtail mixed in. Smugglers has been on fire with every boat there catching limits but most of the stock spots at the islands are working. Pick and island and fish it. There are also some nice size halibut mixed in.

Bait Report
The San Pedro and Newport barges both received fresh loads of live squid this morning.
Captain Dave Hansen called in this morning with 5 out of 7 yellowtail hooked on the boat.
Dave is fishing by himself away from any crowds between Little Gibraltar and Red Bluff.
Red Bluff 33.25.651 x 118.25.283
Little Gibraltar 33.25.333 x 118.24.539
Live squid is the ticket and the fish bit up to 8am when the current slacked.
Little Jeremy and his dad having a blast.
Others fishing up around Starlight did not fare so well last night/this morning. No biters up there for them. Same with Eagle Reef. No sign of fish.
Salta Verde to Silver Canyon had an in the dark/early morning snap on white seabass along with a few yellowtail. Look in 10 to 14 fathoms and fish live squid on dropper loops.
33.19.100 x 118.23.490 Silver Canyon
33.19.050 x 118.26.710 Freddies Beach
33.18.830 x 118.25.280 Salta Verde
Jacob emailed in a report from yesterday.
We started out on the backside east end with the fleet this morning waiting for the white sea bass bite to start but after a couple of hours we decided to go back to the front side of Catalina to work the calico’s. Drifting with a 1/4 ounce slider and live squid, we were able to put some quality calico’s and a couple of nice yellowtail on the boat. If my buddy didn’t have to make it home for a wedding we could have stayed longer and put a few more on. Work every point on the front side for the bass and you should find a few yellows in the mix.
Darrell Wilson on the Mary Clair made 40 scoops of squid last night between Ben Weston and Sentinel Rock
Contact Darrell on the “Mary Claire” at 949-677-0607 or CH 11. If you mention “Fishdope” you’ll get $10 dollars off on each scoop of Squid!
The Long beach Carnage is also at catalina with full tanks of squid. They can be reached at (562) 714-8103 or on channel 11.
Both boats are parked at Avalon.
Mission Beach/La Jolla/Del Mar
Captain Mike Meredith of the Blue Horizon charter boat reported in after fishing for white sea bass and yellowtail last night in to this morning. Mike reported a tiny bit of squid off Mission Beach. Very hard to make squid. His crew did hook a big mystery fish that they never saw.
Mike then moved up to La Jolla for nothing then on to Del Mar where the water temperature came up to 65-66F. Lots of fin bait in the areas but no predators.
For the AM this morning he moved back in to the La Jolla Cove to see if there was anything going on but found nothing doing. He left the cove and is now offshore as of this report. If he finds anything holding offshore he will report in later.
Coronado Islands
Spots of yellowtail and barracuda are moving back in to the islands. As the water warms the fish are once again becoming active. There is quite a bit of fish being seen this morning from the North End of South Island down to the South Kelp Ridge.
Let the birds show you the way. The areas with fish are very birdy. Flyline sardines or mackerel and throw the surface iron in to the boils or under the birds.
Ensenada
Louie Prieto of the It’s 4 Reels reported in late last night. The bite that was going off earlier in the week has turned off despite a few fish we heard of getting caught on Thursday.
I can tell you the water has turned cold and green with lots of wind and mixed swell. That is today’s report and hopefully things will change. Heard of 1 small yellow caught by all the boats out today. I did meter fish at the north end of Todos Santos and we also had a sort bite but no takers. Got a pass of sardines from Tunaholic (muchas gracias) but that didn’t help either. Water temp was 59-61 to degrees at the island and 62 inshore.
Offshore
Great news as tuna are being spotted by the plane, being caught by the sport boats and the ocean is flat grease.
The plane saw a random spot of big bluefin feeding inside the Hidden Bank at 31.48 x 117.20.
The Old Glory has a single 75lb bluefin on the boat, he’s straight South at 80 Miles. The Pacific Voyager, Prowler, Pacific Queen and Tribute also have bluefin on the boat this morning. The fleet is fishing below the Lower 500 and have fish on board they are also seeing lots of bait in the area.
They are working in the area of the Lower 500 between 31.12 x 117.07 and 31.07 x 116.59.
Large kelp 31.13 x 117.08
Large kelp 31.12 x 117.09
Large kelp 31.05 x 117.02
Large kelp 31.13 x 117.08
Large kelp all by it’s self 31.09 x 117.17
4 Large kelps 31.02 x 117.31 way away from the fleet
Plane looked 30 miles below the fleet at 30.50 and ran straight East, empty kelps, no tuna.
